I trust the Eagles scouting dept when it comes to evaluating O-line talent. They have had a pretty solid O-line for the last decade. they seem to have the talent, that when 1 guy moves on, they just fill the spot from within. Now I know they have added some FA's on the O-line(Peters last year being the most noticable), but they do a very nice job of drafting and developing talent.
I know Shawn Andrews has had back problems, and I know he's a complete headcase, but when he's healthy, and not singing Show Tunes in the locker room, he is a hell of a player. Now, I don't know how he will check out medically, but he has already said he plans on playing again, so i'm believing the back has got to be getting better.
If he checks out medically, I'd take him any day of the week. He can play either G position and also RT. What a huge upgrade he would be to our line.............if he is healthy.
So, how would you feel about the Big Kid as a Redskin?

Definite sign
A good player, 27 years old, this guy is an immediate upgrade whether at RG or RT. As long as he isn’t asking for huge money, this would be a great pick up for us so that we could not have to draft 3, 4 O-linemen…
This would be a great pickup by all regards in my opinion. I didn’t even hear about him getting released. As long as he medically checks out, he is a great pick up in my eyes.
BigOLinemen - March 18, 2010
He was expected to be released
in the offseason, and the Eagles finally did it this week. I don’t know what price tag he would come with, especially with the back problem, but I would love the Redskins to look into it more.
Tiller56 - March 18, 2010
He is injury prone
having missed 30 out of 32 games the past two years I’m not sure that he is even healthy enough to play football anymore. And with that type of track record I don’t believe you could be optimistic that he would be healthy moving forward. I don’t believe he would be an immediate upgrade if he cant get out of the training room.
JeanBaptiste - March 19, 2010
It certainly doesn't hurt to look at him, but
I trust the Eagles on this one. They know and value linemen; with his history and injuries, if they released him; they have to feel he is done. Back surgery is serious, and a major injury concern; plus he has multiple issues to boot. Again, the price to look is free, but the price probably isn’t worth the product. Better to look for some stability and reliability somewhere else.
johnnydee83 - March 18, 2010
Yeah, but
their situation is a lot different than ours. I believe they were without him last year, yet still made the playoffs. So they know they can get by without him. Plus, he was being paid starters money, and they probably looked at this as the best time to purge his hefty salary since there are no cap implications. Just like we did with out 10 guys. Now, on the other hand, there’s no doubt we need help on the O-line, both starters and backups. So if we could sign him as a backup, he would be well worth it. Then, who knows, maybe he recaptures his old form, and turns into a viable starter again, or even a pro bowler. This is a no brainer to me.
CJHutch - March 19, 2010
The problem with Andrews is he doesn't want to play football.
He plays because it pays. He wants to be a singer, he moved to southern California to try to get in the biz. He built a music studio in his house, and is more interested in music than football. He is afraid of permanent damage that football may cause him, and the word from Philly is the guy is flat-out milking it. He has not been re-habbing up to their standards, and speaks to the team through his agent.
Now that the guy is out of a contract, he may make a half-hearted effort to secure another pay day. But when he does you can bet he will sustain some kind of injury that will put him back on the shelf. You either want to play football or you don’t, and Andrews doesn’t. It’s just better to stay away from that.
He has had 2 surgeries repairing discs in his back, and is rightfully concerned about his future. The fire just isn’t there. I wish the best for him, but I don’t want the soap opera on my team.
johnnydee83 - March 19, 2010
He claims he definitly wants to play again
He may have reached a settlement with the Eagles. If not, I believe he was still under contract, so he should be getting paid reguardless. If he wants to persue music, what better time to do it than when he’s getting paid not to play football. Him saying he wants to still play makes me believe he is getting healthy, and has the desire again.
Tiller56 - March 19, 2010
Again, it doesn't hurt to talk to him.
But the Eagles bent over backwards 3 ways to sunday to accomodate him. He has told most everyone that he is very concerned about his injuries and the long-term complications that would affect his life. He has emotional/mental health issues that are still being addressed. Even now his lack of contact with the club and percieved lack of serious re-habbing with team supervision raises red flags. He left the Eagles with no choice but to reluctantly cut ties and move forward.
If he comes here, I will root for him and hope everything goes well for him. He is a likeable guy and very colorful. He ultimately has to decide what he wants to do with his life going forward, but he is a huge risk. The Redskins need to do their due diligence before signing him, and if they don’t contact him, I would understand completely.
johnnydee83 - March 19, 2010
I guess
an optimistic viewpoint would be that, since he came into the league as a 1st round draft pick, he probably thought he had it made. But now that reality has hit him in the
facecheckbook, perhaps he will wise/grow up. Also, I would question the Eagles’ decision to move him to tackle. Just because a guy has the athleticism to play tackle doesn’t mean he is one. You have a Pro Bowl guard, you move him to tackle, and then say his play fell off? Well, Duh!Anyway, I say if we can get him for a small, incentive laden deal, it would be low risk high reward. He’s only 27, and even if he doesn’t revert back to his Pro Bowl form, you have a starting caliber guard as depth. I like that option much better than Will Montgomery, Ed Williams, or (insert name of any other undrafted free agent O-lineman here)
CJHutch - March 19, 2010
We can agree to disagree.
Ultimately Shanahan will make that call. I just wouldn’t want to see a valuable roster spot taken by a guy that we can’t count on.
johnnydee83 - March 19, 2010
o yea...
depth on our O-line will be key for success sign him he’s a steal i think for the right price…
Tony J. - March 18, 2010
Damn sure wouldnt hurt....
Especially since weve been bringing in waaaaay less talented individuals over the last couple of weeks……
JONAH 31 - March 18, 2010
I know the eagles are making room for a 4th QB cant ever have too many
westly - March 18, 2010
Good pick up...
Like it was mentioned if he checks out medically I am ok with this signing. Since the back is just as bad as having bad knees I would have to have my second quesses.
mybluebone - March 18, 2010
Not yet ...
He hasn’t signed yet; this is a “should they sign” post. :-)
d_c_guy - March 19, 2010
The guy is emotionally unavailable
I don’t think it would be a good signing because his heart isn’t into football. His back problems are mostly mental at this point and the Eagles gave him all of last season to get his shit together, but he didn’t.
I don’t think he would be a good fit, but then again, I didn’t think Larry Johnson was either but we still signed him…
travisjh86 - March 18, 2010
I don't know about his personal life but if he is medically ok then hey sign him.
Back problems are very serious though so of course we need to keep looking as well.
BrandonO - March 19, 2010
No problem signing him, but......
Sign him like you were doing a Pre-Nuptial, with bonus’s along the way for production. One for making the team, another for starting, another for games started/games played etc etc. Then it’s all a freebie. We can win but can’t lose.
Dipper - March 19, 2010
If he was signed and was both mentally and physically healthy
our O-line could look something like this:
LT – Okung, T Williams, C Brown, V Ducasse(1 of 4 rookies)/Robinson
LG – Dock/Hicks
C – Rabach/Lich
RG – Andrews/Reinhardt
RT – Williams/Heyer
OR
RG – Williams/Reinhardt
RT – Andrews/Heyer
This looks a hell of a lot better on paper than what we had last year.
Tiller56 - March 19, 2010
On Paper
But the guy hasn’t really played in over two seasons, is a head case and doesn’t seem to want to play football. Anything more than the league minimum, nothing guaranteed, with incentives is crazy. Let someone else make that mistake.
d_c_guy - March 19, 2010
only because of the mess we're in
We’ve neglected drafting OL for a decade and there’s no easy way out of this mess. Even if all Andrews does is play a year for us it will be a big help and maybe a real disciplinarian like Shanahan can get him to focus properly.
I think he’d be an immediate and significant upgrade at RT so I see him there and not at RG. I’m hoping Reinhardt can recover and play RG.
aFan4Life - March 19, 2010
He could bunk with Portis
and do karaoke with him on road trips. What’s not to like?
Scott E - March 19, 2010
Just not the kind of player we shoud be signing right now
smutsboy1 - March 19, 2010
We need to get tough, high aspiration players on board.
No more slackers!
Scott E - March 19, 2010
Agreed
This guy checked out of the NFL long before the eagles cut him.
I don’t understand why everyone is all up on his nuts. Not only does he not mentally want to play football, but it’s questionable if he’s physically able to play now. I would be all for taking a look at him to make sure his back is alright but the fact remains that he doesn’t want to play football.
PASS!
travisjh86 - March 19, 2010
Wow!
Do any of you realize if we had Vinny, we’d be fielding a team with Antonio Cromartie, Dansby, Peppers, Porter, Foote, and now Andrews? Man I miss the glory days of March.
RPMontana - March 19, 2010
I’m not sure I understand your response. Or what you’re trying to get at.
travisjh86 - March 19, 2010
Sorry more of a new topic and a fun thought
Inspired by the comment of not the type we need. Everyone on that list is of interesting character except maybe Dansby.
RPMontana - March 19, 2010
Larry Foote is a solid citizen and rugged LB, I would’ve been happy if the ’Skins had signed him. Cromartie, Peppers and Porter not so much.
d_c_guy - March 19, 2010
True true Foote should be excluded.
We’ll add LJ instead. Whoops we did that anyway.
RPMontana - March 19, 2010
Ha alright, for a second there I thought you were serious.
travisjh86 - March 19, 2010
If the Skins keep it up with someone like Shawn Andrews
they will need a full time psychiatrist on staff. There are other players around without his hang ups. LJP should like this thread.
Jefferson1935 - March 19, 2010
sure why not= we got every other troubled or injured reject as a backup- lol
les boulez bomber - March 19, 2010
Wow...
So battling depression labels you a “headcase”? Just because he’s willing to deal with it and publicly acknowledge his issues (thereby perhaps giving support to depressed people around the country who think they’re alone and unable to achieve anything), you suggest that he is someone who can’t be worked with, who doesn’t deserve a job in the sport he’s spent his life working on? And how is it that dressing in drag is symptomatic of depression? Not only are you generalizing about what depression actually is, but you’re suggesting that unusual gender identifications are indicators of mental instability. Wow.
kseandoyle - March 19, 2010
I consider him a headcase because he dyes his hair orange and sings showtunes in the locker room
not because he has depression.
Tiller56 - March 19, 2010
I Couldn't Care Less What He Sings or What Color His Hair Is
But he’s really got to prove that he wants to play football, not just lip-service the commitment long enough to get the $$ to pay for his recording studio.
d_c_guy - March 22, 2010
Multitude of head cases?
I’m a little surprised at all the apparently immature people, “head cases” and semi-criminals becoming available this year. That means they were playing last year. Does the NFL have a resident psychiatrist to keep an eye on all the nuts? Or at least a counselor? Most of these guys are rich, with many making more in one year than most people make in a lifetime – they shouldn’t have any money problems. I’m being a little facetious – some of the incidents could be simple self interest or gamesmanship or just overblown, and some could be due to a sort of mid-life crisis (since mid-life to somebody with a 10 year career could be pretty young). Even so, it seems like quite a few of the FA, RFAs and even a few of the draft prospects are downgraded for various personal problems.
Donnio1234 - March 19, 2010
I mean he definetly sound like an upgrade
but do we really want another injury prone O lineman? I mean haven’t we had enough of those already? But if he is healthy then sign his ass in a second.
Area 51 Forever - March 21, 2010
He may be “healthy” but just not want to play football. That’s a problem. Hell yes he wants to get paid, but that doesn’t mean he loves, or even likes, the game enough to do what he needs to do.
