he hasn’t been the same since (with the exception of his high penalty rate). There really isn’t a track record of guys being better LT’s than RT’s, esp. not when they are noticeably slower.
the top LT’s in the league make between $8-10 million, while the top RT’s between $5-6.5 million a year. He wanted to play LT because that gives him the prestige. I didn’t see any teams trying him out at LT this offseason, in fact there really weren’t any other teams that seemed to be actively in the market for his services on the right side as well.
Brown was an All-American RT in college and spent his first year in the NFL on the right side. I think pre-injury he was a good LT for the Saints, but I don’t see him being able to protect the blind side with as much ground as he gives up.
My thoughts exactly. I hope the team gets some consistency soon. I’ve had enough of being the NFC laughingstock. I’m a teacher and the Redskins’ fan is hard to come by because the young ones just chase a winner. Doesn’t bode well for the fanbase for the future.
I’ve been looking for you. You know what I’m looking for. Don’t take this wrong, I’m not trying to be a dick (not right now, at least), I’m just curious what your take is on the QB situation. Do you still think Rex has what it takes, or did yesterday’s game sway your opinion at all?
Again, don’t think I’m looking to “call you out”. I just want YOUR opinion. There are a few other Rex supporters whose opinion I’m not the least bit interested in, if that counts for anything.
But yeah, I’ve long thought that Rex has gotten a raw deal in the NFL. But I also think that ever since his last year at UF, he hasn’t looked the same. Due to the switch from Spurrier to Zook as head coach.
Rex can be alright. He is never going to be Tom Brady good, but with our lack of a running yesterday it made matters worse. The Eagles, knowing we had to throw it were able to pounce on that aspect. We couldn’t run the ball to save our lives. We became one dimensional and the Eagles feasted.
I think that Rex has it in him to guide the ‘Skins to an 8-8 season. Give or take a game either way. I don’t think he is downright horrible either. But he’ll have a game like he did yesterday every now and then. Guys like Brett Favre, John Elway, Dan Marino, Steve Young…etc., they all had bad days.
A few of Rex’s INT’s this season haven’t been his fault at all. ‘Tana Moss had one bounce of his chest and get intercepted. Two of them in yesterday’s game could have been prevented if the receiver had some situational awareness.
I’d give Rex another game or two to see if he can still get the job done and then switch to Beck. But just remember, there is a reason why, until yesterday, that Beck hasn’t really played since 2007. The ‘Skins weren’t the only team that thought he was back-up or 3rd string material. Also note that his touchdown drive came in borderline garbage time.
Your candor, and your fortitude. I disagree with everything you say about Rex, but I respect your opinion. Trust me, I know how you feel. I used to campaign for us to give Shuler the job back in the day. Not because I was a huge Shuler fan, just because I didn’t like Frerotte.
Now, I TOTALLY agree with you on Beck. I was hoping he’d get the starting job during preseason, but I was never under the illusion that he was gonna be anything more than a stop-gap.
Being a “Rex guy”, you may not like this, but I stick by what I said in the preseason. I couldn’t get too worked up over the QB competition because, as I said months ago, it’s like choosing between a Yugo and a Pinto. They both stink.
Oh I said on here in the pre-season that I thought Beck should have won the job. That would have solved all of this “issue” but the fact remains…
Grossman is more experienced.
Grossman was with Kyle in Houston learning the offense.
Beck hadn’t played in years.
So while I figured that Grossman would win the job, I thought that Beck probably earned it more. But in the end it doesn’t matter, because they are both a one or two year guy at the most anyway. Shanny will find his QB soon.
Re: Heath Shuler, it’s funny. My father used to scream at the TV for Heath Shuler to come in the game because he thought Frerotte was a moron. As it turns out, it never really mattered.
My kinda guy. I was always on an island with Shuler. I really thought he had what it took. Coming in late and getting on the fans’ “bad side”, coupled with Frerotte being mildly capable as a 7th rounder ( not to mention being Sonny’s guy), all were contributing factors in Shuler fighting an uphill battle here. Now, I admit, he obviously wasn’t strong-willed enough to overcome an of that, but I still think the actual talent was there.
As for Frerotte, he hit his ceiling in very fast, and never got better. It’s not as if he was ever particularly horrible, I just knew we would never go anywhere with him. I was right.
Yeah, that about sums it up. I think that Shuler did have a lot of talent, but like you said, he just couldn’t get passed the other stuff it takes to be a QB. Grossman is kind of a like a poor man’s Frerotte in that sense.
You aren’t going to be 4-12 with him at the helm, but you aren’t going to be 12-4 either. Always in the middle. Which is why I said 8-8, give or take a game each way.
Spend a bunch of time defending Shuler. He was a consensus top 5 pick at that time. Honestly, I wanted Dilfer, only because I had seen his 500+ yard bowl game performance. But everyone knew Shuler was the more athletic of the two, so I wasn’t disappointed with the pick. Shuler was Peyton Manning in Tennessee before Peyton Manning. I really thought he would be out first “Franchise” quarterback. Well, first since Sammy Baugh.
When Spurrier left UF to come to the ‘Skins, Zook became the head coach. Grossman, as a redshirt-sophomore was runner up to Eric Crouch for the Heisman Trophy. Grossman should have won it, but back then, they didn’t award the Heisman to sophomores. Even though Grossman was a junior in the classroom.
Zook, took an All-American, Heisman runner up, All-SEC First Team, AP National Player of Year….
And totally ruined him. It was like what Spurrier put Patrick Ramsey through, only much, much … much worse.
def. he's a great story who unfortunately suffered a bad injury that killed his draft chances or ability to make the team (he missed nearly all of camp)
I’d love to give him a shot. I think anyone who has overcome what he has, has the work ethic we want on the Redskins.
has gotten progressively worse this entire season. I admit some of his picks weren’t his fault but most of them were. I just don’t understand what he’s seeing out there. Piss poor decisions and the offense just isn’t capable of compensating for them.
In this instance, I think the Eagles gameplanned against the run and wanted Rex to beat them in the air which clearly NO ONE believes he’s capable of doing. Add on to the fact that he runs like molasses and again, makes poor decisions then too.
That’s, IMO, the secret to success against the Skins. Make Rex beat you. I don’t think he can and the Eagles proved it.
The question is can Beck play better than Grossman? At this point, I don’t think it matters cause teams will continue play the run until Beck can prove otherwise.
we tried to open it up a little on Sunday, Rex just doesn’t have the arm strength. I can’t remember the last time I saw the boot right and throw back across the field to Davis play….and you know Shanny loves that play.
until the injuries the left side was the side Grossman always rolled too, despite it forcing him to take longer to get his body set since he is right handed
That's as bleak as a presser can be

I don't know, having a guy named Mo Hurt on your team is pretty good sign.
Or as Keim calls him: Pile Mover Mo
Parks Smith - October 17, 2011
No word on QB means....
Beckalicious.
iH8dallas - October 17, 2011
Jammal at left tackle and Locklear at right tackle will be fine.
I think Locklear was the highest rated pass blocking right tackle in football last year.
iH8dallas - October 17, 2011
yes and Brown one of the worst, so him moving to LT is a disaster
Steve Shoup - October 17, 2011
Ever thought maybe
Just MAYBE Brown is better on the left side? I’m not saying its so, but that is actually what he said last year.
CJHutch - October 17, 2011
He said it this year too. Worth a shot.
Kevin Ewoldt - October 17, 2011 via mobile
Yep
At least worth holding out hope. Who knows, maybe he even outplays Trent.
(Hey, if you’re gonna hope, may as well go all out)
CJHutch - October 17, 2011
Yes, he's a natural LT, hated the move to RT
Donnio1234 - October 17, 2011
he hated the move due to money
he’s not a natural LT at all, and was converted into one with the Saints.
Steve Shoup - October 17, 2011
But made the Pro Bowl
I know that doesn’t mean much, but it shold count for something. I mean, Stephon Heyer ain’t in danger of ever making a Pro Bowl.
CJHutch - October 17, 2011
but that was pre-injury
he hasn’t been the same since (with the exception of his high penalty rate). There really isn’t a track record of guys being better LT’s than RT’s, esp. not when they are noticeably slower.
Steve Shoup - October 17, 2011
I think a lot of that had to do with money also
the top LT’s in the league make between $8-10 million, while the top RT’s between $5-6.5 million a year. He wanted to play LT because that gives him the prestige. I didn’t see any teams trying him out at LT this offseason, in fact there really weren’t any other teams that seemed to be actively in the market for his services on the right side as well.

Beck did get a couple first team snaps during the BYE week.

Shanahan on Moss’s plea for Rex to remain the starter:
Parks Smith - October 17, 2011
As usual, Shanahan is just stringing words together, that ultimately mean nothing.
iH8dallas - October 17, 2011
Refresh my memorey when Quarterback A was benched last year and QB B came in, which one started the next game?
Parks Smith - October 17, 2011
Two totally different situations.
Quarterback A was a six-time Probowler who the Redskins were paying a ton of money.
This is a vert different circumstance.
iH8dallas - October 17, 2011
So who started the next game?
Parks Smith - October 17, 2011
McNabb did, but I don't know what you're trying to prove.
Are you trying to get a A-HA!!! EXACTLY kind of thing?
Like I said, totally different.
iH8dallas - October 17, 2011
All I'm saying is that it's not a given that Beck will be starting.
Parks Smith - October 17, 2011
I agree
I could totally see Shanny sticking with Rex. It would be the wrong call, but I could totally see it.
CJHutch - October 17, 2011
I can't see it at all.
McNabb never had a game that was that bad. Not even the Detroit game.
iH8dallas - October 17, 2011
We'll see
I’m not predicting anything. I won’t be surprised either way.
CJHutch - October 17, 2011

I think Shanahan has not decided yet - just like he says
i’m a little surprised at Santana’s comment. I had assumed Beck would be the starting QB, but now I’m not so sure.
Donnio1234 - October 17, 2011
Couple of thoughts on Maurice Hurt from someone who watched him for years in college…
He’s great at pulling to the edges – but struggles once out in space against a LB or S.
He is strong going forward – not so much going backwards.
He can play multiple positions on the line if needed.
Horrible balance.
FlaGators - October 17, 2011

Shuler had a horrible arm
I remember a bomb he threw for about 50 yards and the ball was thrown so high I swear it nearly scraped the bottom of a 747. I knew then he was toast.

Since Mo Hurt is coming off the PS most likely a permanant fixture on the 52 man
who should the Skins bring onto PS?
PAinfUL - October 17, 2011
Might bring Nate Ness back, or probably a OL we've never heard of.
Parks Smith - October 17, 2011
I thought about Ness being a possibilty
but was curious who the posters thought would be an intriguing addition, that is if a ps player can be considered intriguing.

there are a few vets out their on the FA market but most coming off injuries so they might not even be ready
