Redskins Round Table - Keys to Victory Against the Panthers

What are the keys to a Redskins victory against the Panthers and did the Redskins make the right move by benching Rex Grossman?

Kevin Ewolt

I'm going to keep this short and sweet. Philly's offensive blueprint vs the Skins last week should be exactly how the John Beck era begins. How often did we see Vick do 7-step drops? Almost never. It was all quick throws, screens, slants, and draws. The Skins D never really had a chance to get to him. Why not do the same with Beck? Throwing jump balls down field with 5'10 WRs should never be in our game plan (yet somehow it was). Keep it simple and let the Panthers make the mistakes. After all, the Cats are 5th worst in turnover ratio at -5 (Skins are -3).

Parks Smith

I think there are a couple keys to this game, and I said earlier this week that most do not surround the quarterback position. But one thing we absolutely have to do this week, that we didn't do last week, is get into a rhythm and set the tempo.  I've never felt a coin toss was important as it was last week. I could just picture the Eagles getting the ball to start and ramming it down our throat, again. Luckily we got the Eagles off the field quickly, but then we couldn't set any sort of offensive rhythm. I think we really need to pound the rock against a Carolina front seven that really only features one good player, Charles Johnson. Offensive tempo also begins on special teams. Brandon Banks can be a lightning rod but he can also nearly kill a drive before it starts. I think continually starting drives at around the 15 yard line starts to wear on an offense and starts to form a mental hurdle. It's important for John Beck to be as comfortable as possible, and starting with 85 or 90 yards in front of you is not my idea of comfort.

I'm fully expecting the Skins front seven to have a big day versus Cam Newton and his offensive line. I think Juice Atogwe may be a key to this game, we need Landry rushing and then we need help against Smith, Olsen, Shockey, and LaFell. I don't think Newton will have much time to throw, but big plays need to be eliminated. One safety blanket the Redskins need to keep their eyes open for is Johnathan Stewart catching the ball out of the backfield, he has been very beneficial in the passing game for the Panthers this year.

While much will be made between the quarterback battle of John Beck vs Cam Newton, the biggest keys to the game involve the Redskins ability to run the football and stop the run.

There is little doubt that the Redskins defense is the heart and soul of this team, but their one weakness so far this season is their ability to stop the run. While the Redskins rank in the top half of teams in total yards allowed or yards per game, they are in a four way tie for 21st in the league for yards per carry. Their inability to stop the run with any consistency allowed both the Cowboys and Eagles beat the Redskins, and nearly allowed the Cardinals to come back. That is even more troubling this week as the Panther's three-headed monster of Newton, DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart ranks 5th in the league in yards per carry. If the Redskins are to win this game they need to stop the run and force Newton to pass.

On the flip side the Redskins also need to be able to run the ball themselves. Last week against Philly the Eagles ran all over the Redskins and held the ball for nearly two-thirds of the game. That is exactly what Washington needs to do to win. The Redskins have to keep the ball out of the Panthers hands, and the best way to do that is to run the ball and control the clock. So far this season the Redskins have far too often asked their quarterback to win them games, and as we've seen that is a recipe for disaster. With a new signal caller, and two new offensive linemen the Redskins would be wise to put the ball in their running backs' hands. I think to do so they will need to get more creative in their play calling. Run more with wide receivers split out wide, hopefully opening up the middle, use end arounds, direct snaps to the back, pitch outs and delayed draws. These might not be typical Redskin plays, but it is quite clear that the regular Redskins rushing attack isn't working, and the loss of two linemen only make things worse. Keep Carolina guessing by showing them some different looks, and it should open up both the running game and the play action pass.

The key to beating Carolina to me comes down to the opening drives for both our offense and our defense. On offense, we have to kind of forget who the quarterback is and just move the ball down the field. We have to establish something right away on offense to get the other 10 guys on the field past the inevitable psychological block of having the new guy under center. A few first downs and some points on the board will go a long way towards getting our offense settled down. On defense, that first drive has to be about forcing the Panthers off the field immediately. Whether it be by turnover or by forcing a three-and-out, our defense has to have arguably its best drive out of the gate. Cam Newton will likely be playing behind an undrafted rookie right tackle. Kerrigan and Orakpo have to make him uncomfortable right away.

Though I advocated for keeping Rex Grossman at quarterback for another week, I can honestly say it doesn’t matter who is under center. I was most concerned about the "move" itself, thinking it was still too soon to make this kind of significant change. The truth is that either of these guys is capable of playing at a high enough level for us to win games. I like watching Shanahan go with the guy he has the most trust in at the moment, and I do believe we will be seeing Rex again this season.

HTTR4LIFE

The keys to a Redskins victory will not change much this weekend versus last.  The Redskins MUST get the running game going early and often against the Panthers who have the league’s 31st ranked defense against the run, giving up 140.3 yards rushing a game on average.  Two of the most overwhelming areas of concern should be winning the turnover battle and putting pressure on young rookie phenom, Cam Newton, who has averaged over 300 yards passing a game this year but has also thrown nine interceptions .  Putting pressure on Newton shouldn’t be that much of a challenge as they have replaced the right side of their offensive line this season already due to injury and will more than likely have a undrafted rookie starting at RT this weekend for the first time. Look for Kerrakpo to be in full effect this weekend!

As far as the move to Beck, I don’t really think the Redskins had much choice in the matter, Rex has progressively gotten worse this season and after Beck came out and showed he could lead the offense last week it was time for a change. I look at it this way, John Beck cannot possibly do any worse than Rex did last weekend and the Redskins already know what Grossman brings to the table in crunch time, while Beck is still very much a mystery but also a player who is out to prove he is a NFL caliber quarterback.

Kerrigan needs to have a huge day.

…again.

I want him to have a HUUUUUUGE Day
I really think that he will...
SteveO I have to really disagree with your point about the creative play calling.....

I think we should run that stretch play…..a bunch. Keep it simple for the reshuffled OL, I doubt they have spent too much time on running those plays in practice and some just take too long to develop. A failed end around play can be a drive killer right off the bat. I would hope to keep Beck out of 2nd-17 type plays as much as possible.
Also I am not too sure that asking Cook to start thinking about snapping the ball to alternate players in his first game out is a good idea. Let him get settled in first. Apparently the middle is a weak spot for Carolina, so hopefully he can have a decent game and gain some confidence. Hell, lets just hope he can remember the snap count this week.

I see you point, but the problem with the stretch play is it's success is reliant on all the linemen and TE's moving as one essentially

that worries me with two new starters and Monty at a new position. Some different looks can allow for some easier assignments for our o-line, and where if one guy isn’t great it might not ruin the whole play (depending on who it is).

I agree with that completely....

it’s a tough situation all the way around. That is the one thing I don’t like about the ZBS, sometimes I think you need to be able to just line up and beat the man in front of you. Simple straight forward power running, this also allows you to run directly yo the strength (or away from the weaknesses) of the offensive line.

yeah that is kinda what I'm thinking

I mean i know they won’t abandon it completely but some pitchout’s, delayed draws, things like that should be easier for our o-line and have the added advantage of being a new wrinkle that the Panthers probably aren’t gaming for.

unfortunately right now what isn’t our weakness along the offensive line?

"unfortunately right now what isn’t our weakness along the offensive line?" ....exactly my thoughts as I was typing that.

and changing it up a bit, I think, is a good idea….I just don’t want to see Kyle get too cute with it. I hope to see more Helu this week, I think he can be effective, especially with the screen, which would acually allow the line men to get out in space and deal with the LB’s one on one. From what I have been able to gather their LB’s (at the moment) are their weakest link, and the CB’s while decent in coverage have been relatively poor tacklers, Helu might be able make some nice plays.

and some of it is as simple as not telegraphing plays

-use Niles Paul as a receiver more
-spread the WR’s and TE’s out wide and run from that formation
-pass from a formation with two TE’s on the line etc.

I really think if they mix it up, they could get some broken plays. And yes I agree Helu is the guy to do it. I’d love to see him with 20 carries on Sunday (plus 4-6 receptions). I think that is how we win.

I wish you were Mike Shanahan saying that

I would pick Helu off waivers right now and start him in fantasy…

Considering Beck played in a spread-style offense at BYU...

…maybe we should use more spread sets and quick passes from those sets.

Simple

RUN THE BALL!!! sheesh…

and stop the run....

and don’t forget to force more turnovers than we make.

old school football...

Have to admit since the Bears were running successfully against the Panthers we should do the same and see if we can get some sort of running game on. Might be wise to eat up the clock and keep Newton from getting big gains and since it is a pass happy league these days this may be the way to get a win this week by going old school on a young Panther team.

I know everyone says this is a pass first league right but we have talent at the RB position.

Kyle just passes too much. I understand that more than the half the time you have to pass nowadays, but he completely abandons the run game soon after the game begins.

Score more points than Carolina.
Haha thanks John Madden
That wasn't very John Madden-esque

I saw no reference to how awesome Brett Farve is in his statement.

Just a small correction for you
and will more than likely have a undrafted rookie starting at RT this weekend for the first time. Look for Kerrakpo to be in full effect this weekend

Bell has started two games already and played in all of them, so its nothing we haven’t grown accustomed to. What you should really watch out for is making sure both outside pass rushers apply strong pressure at the same time as to limit our additional blocking and defenders remaining disciplined on gaps during a pass rush. If you give no outlet for Newton to run and collapse the pocket, that’s when he’s more likely to throw an errant pass off his back foot.

Errant Pass off the back foot = Grossmanesque
He throws some strikes even with bad balance, and can throw 50 yards off his back foot

Its just when he gets lineman up in his grill that he seems to have problems. Just something that will go away with time and experience since you don’t feel it as often in the shotgun option college game.

Again with the defense, getting to Newton is only half the battle. I can’t count how many times there was a sure sack only for Newton to pop out of nowhere for a massive gain or a bomb downfield, and even breaking tackles from guys like Peppers and Abraham. Getting contain and a good pass rush with only 5 defenders has been the best way to stall our drives, if you can do that, you might be able to force some mistakes.

Oh Of Course

I didn’t mean to compare Rex to Cam. The comparison ends with the fact that they both have 3 letters in their first name…

Actually

Cameron has one fewer letter than Rexinald.

I'm calling it....

First offensive play, Beck on a bootleg, goes deep to Anthony. TD

I think the bootleg call is right, but the throw will go to Davis on the

smoke route. It is a higher % throw, so they will use that to get Beck going early.

Does it bug anyone else that Kerrigan and Rak don't switch sides ever

I kinda like what they are doing with D. Ware in Dallas this year.

Maybe Next Year

I think they wanna keep Kerrigan in familiar surroundings…changing sides could throw off his game, he is just a rook after all

I lose sleep over it.
Phew!

glad I’m not the only one

It's kinda funny because you comment kinda relates well to your "that's what she said" sig line
Ha, ive noticed that on several comments in the past
Beck:

328 passing yards, 3TDs 0INT 117 passer rating.

Ha - every Redskins fan's wet dream right there, we can only hope for something so Beck-tacular
If he does do that....

I expect Hogs Haven and Twitter to spontaneously combust.

I predict that John Beck has

617 Passing Yards, 6 TDS, Throws One interception but chases the guy down and strips the ball from him and rushes in for the TD himself.

Also, he runs out on defense and intercepts Newton and returns that for a TD too…

I saw him in preseason, he is just that good….

Then at halftime he runs to Ric Flair's house, smacks him in the chest and puts him in the figure four.
These are all realistic scenarios, but do you think he can do all of them in one game?
Of course.

And after the game he signs the ball and throws a deep one all the way to Durham and I catch it in my front yard.

Absolutely

Didn’t you see him in the preseason? I have never seen a more talented and commanding presence at QB.

Then shouts, "Whooooo!"
John Beck - 2 TDs in debut

Redskins 34
Panthers 17

iH8dallas might’ve hacked my account

Still calling 27-17.

With one TD coming from D/ST.

I'm hoping not....cause I'm betting the Under

20-3 Skins would be just fiiiiiiine

21-17 is my prediction

and one TD will either come from the defense or be set up by a huge defensive return or recovery.

Fine with me, just under 43 points total please
i don't see that being a problem

I don’t see our offense putting up big points, not behind that o-line. And our defense should limit them as well.

I think special teams is going to be huge.....

Banks and Gano could very well decide this game.

Well it sure would be nice to see Banks do something
I predict

Redskins 23, Panthers 13

Beck throws for 1 TD, Hightower rushes for another, Gano hits 4 field goals.

Past...that's 26 points.
maybe he expects the D to score a TD.
That would be 33
maybe he expects Kerrigan to kick a field goal?
3 of 4 Yahoo writers pick Carolina

And Carolina is a one to three point favorite. The home field advantage explains the spread. Another tough game. I’ll go Skins, 27-17.

Carolinas secondary is horrible. We will run the ball and play action. Fred Davis will have a big day. If Armstrong is not rusty he will score at least one TD.

Carolina is extremely slow in the secondary.

my thoughts
After all, the Cats are 5th worst in turnover ratio at -5 (Skins are -3).

definitely a concern of mine. our D is supposed to be aggressive, but we’re missing out on easy turnovers and lost yardage!

I think we really need to pound the rock against a Carolina front seven that really only features one good player, Charles Johnson.

this is both true and false. we have one good player, whose name is Greg Hardy. but we have an exceptional player in Charles Johnson. he’d be getting multiple sacks per game if he had better LBs (MLB and OLB both tore achilles). 2 out of the front 7 are a threat. probably doesn’t make you guys feel any worse : P

The key to beating Carolina to me comes down to the opening drives for both our offense and our defense.

mmmm i really don’t know about this. the key is being able to stop Carolina’s offense in the late 4th quarter, and your offense must put up as many points as Carolina so that in the end, you guys can claim victory…

both Carolina and Arizona scored in the first quarter of the first game, but Carolina held a 14-7 lead at half. Arizona would come back to win.

against green bay, Carolina ended the first quarter with a 10 point lead. Green Bay would come back to win.

chicago is an exception, though not quite in the favor of “score first drive”. Chicago did outscore the panthers 3-10 in the first, but by halftime, the score would be 20-24. we would lose this game in the 4th.

similar to CHI, new orleans would lead through first and second quarters, but the Panthers would take the lead in the early 4th quarter, 23- to 27. of course, Brees leads his team back and Panthers are unable on offense to sustain any winning drive.

this game, in my opinion, will be thrilling and won’t have a victor until the fourth quarter. stock up the fridge, guys. you’ll need plenty to drink : )

yes, i am a panthers fan… but i don’t give out ridiculous, immature hate… just love the game of football. panthers could very well lose this game, but i’ll still be happy. let’s hope for no injuries, that’s what makes Sundays a bummer.

very good point about Hardy

He’s a really nice complement to Johnson and gives the Skins two guys to worry about. Hardy going up against Jamaal Brown scares me for Beck’s sake.
