And how many PS players from last year will still be Redskins after our final cut?? This has gotten really interesting, a lot of surprise moves but, to me at least, they seem like very good moves. I like all of our FA signings so far
I think my biggest complaint at this point is that I wish the Skins had waited until Thursday (when teams can officially cut players) to make some of these moves. Of course, this feeling might change come the weekend.
This last move makes it pretty obvious Shanny was gonna cut JJ? I don’t like the move at all, but I do at least realize that this isn’t Shanny’s first rodeo. He decided to get something for a guy he was gonna cut. As back asswards as I think the move was, I will say that Cerrato wouldve NEVER figured out how to get value for someone headed for the waiver wire.
My problem is that even if they were planning on cutting JJ, they didn’t have to cut him before the new year officially starts. For example, ASFAIK Denver was going to be over the salary cap… so they could have just waited to see if Gaffney was going to be cut.
If he’s not, then trade JJ for him. If they cut Gaffney, pick him up (for what should be a better contract than his current $2.5K/year) and then trade Jarmon for another player or picks.
We’ve signed quality players that have proven that they can play…at low prices. Bruce and Mike are making sure they weather the storm and don’t overpay players. If Vinny were here we’d already have T.O lined up across from Ocho with Santonio in the slot. Do we really need that show?
I heard that we are still going after Cullen Jenkins. Front three should be Coefield, J. Jenkins and C. Jenkins. With RAK, Kerrigan, Fletch and ? in the middle. Sounds good to me.
would you be happy if we gave 50 mill to holmes then another 70 to asmuga or whatever. Then maybe we can trade for Kolb while we are at it. You don’t build a team just by signing the biggest names, i think we should all know that after suffering the past decade.
Jarmon wasn’t going to make the cut this year. He is a 4-3 end that was playing out of position last year. He lost weight to play LB and then gained to play DE. Stop focusing on the 3rd round pick, that was Vinny. So we need a WR, doesn’t matter if I’m throwing the ball of Tom Brady, someone has to be out there to catch something. So you get a guy, who in short order, due to knowing the offense which is a mix of Kyle (Houston) and Mike
(Denver), can come in and play right away. Training camp will be short. So guys that know the system are a plus. Name the WR’s on the roster currently that know the system? (Moss, Armstrong, Austin, Banks (meh), and now…Gaffney). At the very least he can help teach and push the young guys and then be cut. You need some old professionals to teach the young guys. It’s not like Jerry Rice is the receivers coach, or like McCardell knows the system better than any of the WR’s that are on the roster. Look at the D-Line additions and the rumored additions. Every one of them is a better fit for the 3-4 than Jarmon was. RELAX….let it play out. Who on this board had the draft going like it did before it happened? No one. Willie Parker and Larry Johnson were both cut, but they pushed Torrain who was a monster. Competition is competition and I love it. You have to bring 90 guys into camp, but remember….37 of them will be cut!!!
I feel it is better to have too many horses in barn to choose from, rather than only having a mule, the goat or the pig to choose from. One of the main arguments that we had here last year was that we didnt have any WRs that were taller than 6’ tall that were worth a damn. We arent paying him anything really. Jarmon didn’t fit the system and would have been cut had we had the people to spare. Guess what… If he doesn’t work out we have until week 4 to trade him out for something else.
but, it’s what they haven’t done that gets me. Particularly, no O-line, no real NT, no QB. Cofield is pretty good and the defense may be fine if Haslett uses a lot of hybrids, including the 4-3. But Barry is not a classic NT and has not played NT in the NFL, so I’d still want Franklin or some other good NT (if they intend to stick with the 3-4).
So far they have not gone for quality, and only one starter (Cofield). All the others are second tier or worse. They have not raised the talent level of the offense at all.
Jarmon has been moved around so much showing they clearly don’t have a set position for him.
Better to get something for him now rather than just cut him for nothing later.
1. Right Tackle- at this point, I think re-upping Brown is our best bet. Ryan Harris is still available as a fall-back.
2. Guard- I’d rather have one of the Falcons’ guards, because I think Davin Joseph might be a bit overrated, but I still like his potential and would be happen if we signed him.
3. Corner- I don’t know if we’re interested in re-signing Carlos, but I guess Jonathan Joseph would be my guy here.
4. If there’s money left, I would like us to bring in Stephen Tulloch to play ILB next to London. Perry Riley can slowly work his way in to more snaps, with the idea that he could be Fletcher’s heir-apparent/protege.
I guess I wouldn’t kill myself if we signed Cullen Jenkins, provided its not for Haynesworth-money (that could be a synonym for ‘wasted money’ at this point.)
Notice there has not been a single article about another team’s interest? He wants to get paid. I think the ’Skins are letting this play out a little so that he finally realizes that he is not going to get the $$ that he wants, then we will re-sign him. Still a long way to go….
His hands are so bad, I just can’t trust that he’ll be there when it counts. That playoff game where the QB hit him right in the chest with a ball that would have been a pick six and he dropped it still hangs with me. Cost them the game, and he loses other games because QB’s have no fear of throwing his direction.
If we could somehow transplant D-hall’s hands onto him, you’d have a top 5 corner.
just makes me nervous. I’d hate to see them re-sign him and watch him cost them a playoff game again. Off course, they are going to have to get a lot better for that to happen.
That they are just playing this out. When a team makes a bid, the ‘Skins can outbid and resign. Carlos is looking for #1 CB money and is not the #1 CB. We’ll get there in resigning him or get a better player for our system.
I’d like to see them get two players there. Maybe Brown and Harris. Don’t forget about Gaither in Baltimore either. He can also play LT. Harris could be cheap to use as depth…
chill we need some better depth at WR, we had santana and one year of good play from Armstrong outside of that what did we have at WR??? stallworth, gafney and stokely give us some viable options while the younger guys develop. i feel better with this than relying on armstrong, hankerson, austin, etc.
not an answer man what would have you done, whats a better option?? you bring in 14 guys a mix of veterans and young guys and get the best 5-6 WR you can where is the error??
trying to make jokes is all you can do, thats sad man you dont like what they do but cant answer what they should have done, then what do you really want?? we want competition and hungry guys in camp plus think of this stokely knows shannahans system so in a shortened year with less time, how is it not smart to sign a guy who knows the system?
About the shortened year? John-friction-Beck is our quarterback. We were gonna lose this year no matter how long it was. Better to lose with young guys than old.
I agree, these are good veteran players that are good signings. I am glad that we aren’t making the big splash, multi year, multi-million dollar signings that we are known for
Wasn't there a 'front page' post about this a while back?
Choose one scenario:
1-2 top notch FA signings.
10-12 mid to low level FA signings, nothing flashy but guys to fill in a bunch of holes.
30 UDFAs. Fill the team with bodies and see if anyone makes the cut for 2012.
Which do you choose? I thought the consensus was nearer the middle range, which is what is sounds like we are doing. I don’t have problems here. Stokley and Stallworth have been good, very good, in the past, and if we get them on the cheap, what is the issue? That, plus it is harder to make UDFAs fit the mold in such a short time frame. We don’t need a bunch of bodies that don’t know the game yet (at NFL speed) and there is no time to filter them out.
I would’ve relied on Armstrong, Hankerson, Austin, etc. We’re rebuilding, which means we need to find out if our young talent can actually play. This is just a mirror image of last year when Joey Galloway and the old Tennessee receiver we signed (name escapes me) stole time from Armstrong and Austin in the preseason while LJ and Slow Willie stole carries from Torrain and Williams.
Look, I don’t mind signing guys to one year deals as training camp fodder. I just don’t want to see them stay atop the depth chart when JUST because they’re vets. (a la Galloway)
you would rather find out during the season what a guy has rather than bring in guys who have done something and make the young guys work for a spot? so if hankerson and austin dont pan out we just ride it out till the end of the year with them, dont follow that logic to well.
You think Stallworth and Stokely get us to 10-6? Sorry, I don’t see it. We’ll be lucky to hit 7-9 this year. (there, I said it) Why waste time on guys who are gonna be getting discount meals at Denny’s when we’re ready to compete?
Ok, you wanna go with the “training camp bodies” argument? Again, i cant say it enough, we kept Joey Galloway, Roydell Williams, and Larry Johnson over Torrain, Austin, and Banks last year. Was it because those guys performed better? No. It was because Shanahan has always shown he’s more comfortable with veterans. Joey Galloway was our STARTER!! Are you happy with the prospect of Donte Stallworth, or Brandon Stokely starting the season for us? Im not. And don’t say it’s not possible.
guess your right. Monkeys are funny though………………..especially the ones at the zoo that sit next to one another and pick off the bugs and eat them…………………then you always have those two or three recluse monkeys that have their backs facing you, and are rapidly punching the clown.
You wanna see hostile? Wait ‘til September. If these creaky knees are running routes instead of Hanky and Armstrong, I’m gonna track down Mr. Wells and chew is throat out.
but you can’t just have a squad full of rookies and young players. You need to mix of veterans sprinkled in to help with the process and show the young guns. No doubt we are rebuilding but these WRs can provide stop gaps along the way .Also all of the receivers on our squad aside from AA and moss are unknowns to some degree ( i tihnk hank will be a beast). With these low level signings you have some idea of what you are getting. What has shown you that Austin can step in and be a solid WR? These are guys who are older but have produced in the NFL. These moves also bring compettiion to the WR position whcih we desperately need. We do not lose anything by giving these guys look and if they pay off we look like a genius.
I am thinking the same thing with some of these signings, but this is great for our team. Bring in the competition, let the roster fall on the best players we have as opposed to sticking with the status quo and hoping that what we have will develop. This is how a team rebuilds. We should all embrace it!
Shanallen have a plan for all of this and our young guys are in the mix. If they show their talents, the older vets will either be traded or cut, that is the genius behind the one-year deal. Patience my friend.
Well yeah, but what young guy would not sign a contract for a roster spot
over a practice squad slot? A lot more money. I’ve wondered what the deal is with the PS – certainly the team cannot have a right of first refusal, because that would make the PS meaningless. They probably can’t even tamper or lean on the guy – would seem to be unethical. I would think that if somebody claimed somebody, they’re gone.
But then again, WRs do take time to develop and how do we develop them between now and 9/11? I am happy with the signings and still think that some of these 1-yr vets will be gone before the first game.
Don’t get too attached to anyone over the next year or two as this (I think) is the new status quo for our team until Shanallen have THEIR guys.
that you need to have a ton of these skill guys in training camp, so that your starters can have a break between routes in the 100+ degree August heat.
you fool the coaches into thinking these guys should make the roster while someone like Hankerson, Paul, Helu, Royster etc fails to gain their needed reps / experience and ends up on the practice squad.
“The simple fact is
that you need to have a ton of these skill guys in training camp, so that your starters can have a break between routes in the 100+ degree August heat.”
everyone getting all worked up over these signings needs to chill out
In my mind we have made 3 moves that are of any significance…. Traded McNabb, Resigned Moss, and Signed Cofield. I am happy with all 3 of those moves. People who are crying about signing Stallworth and Stokley need to relax. These are guys we signed to 1 year deals who are going to compete in camp and the best 6 will survive, no harm no foul. I can see why people would get worked up about the Jarmon trade but its fairly obvious we felt he wasn’t going to fit so we might as well get something for him.
Judge free agency so far on Trading Donny, Resigning ’Tana, and Signing Cofield. If these are the only moves we made then, Yeah im pissed. But I doubt we stick with what we have after those 3 guys.
"I pushed hard to get that guy [Cofield] back because I know how important he is to the entire scheme of our defense," Tuck said. "He’s one of those guys that you really can’t put a price on how much he meant to this football team. If I had it my way — and I’m sure the Giants did — but I would try my best to get him back."
Yes, but after getting his reps on the practice squad, Torrain played his way onto the field.
The PS isn’t a death sentence. Sometimes the PS is the right place for young, inexperienced players. This is going to be even more true this year, since the rooks aren’t getting as much time to get used to the pro game/playbooks, etc. before the season starts.
The only reason I’m not upset about the Stallworth and Stokely signings. One year deals. But I would still rather see our young guys compete with each other, rather than creaky old vets.
If this avalanche of mediocre players is so helpful...
Why are 31 other teams not signing these castoffs at such an alarming rate? I understand the party line on “mentoring” and “experience” but at some point, you have enough of those guys. Last year, we brought in several “random” vets for training camp… and embarrassingly they even played in some games. We are redundant now with mediocre (and aged) depth, not some mystical training camp competition elixir. I guess this is what happens when you don’t draft for a decade?
but I feel like all they’re paying attention to is stockpiling every WR available and there’s been little to zero attention to other problem areas such as o-line. Of course waiting could help drive prices down but still.
I think those deals are being discussed in the background
but there will be a lot more interest from other teams for the better players so they will inevitably take a lot more time to be worked out.
In the meantime we are bringing the extra bodies needed for camp.
not to publicly broadcast who they want to sign. It’s harder on us as fans, but a major improvement from the snyderatto days when everyone knew who they wanted a month in advance.
My junior year of high school, we had this goofy exchange student from Chile.
A couple days before the prom and he doesn’t have a date. I’m standing in the hall with some guys and the Chilean is just asking any girl he sees to go with him. They’re all saying no and after a while he starts telling them what number they are.
“Will you go to the prom with me?”
“Uh, no. I’ve got a thing.”
“Oh. Okay. You’re number 26.”
And I’m pretty sure he made it into the 30s before we had to go back to whatever class we weren’t in.
Why the hell can’t NFL network get some new commercials… If I have to see the one with Dan Synder and his wife dropping the jersey on the table or those damn kids singing in the bus about getting excercise one more time Im going to punch my computer….
Commercials as old as these WR’s we keep icking up… (Rant over)
Hey AbnDave…. good to know there is another Skins fan over here! Every now and then I’ll wear my Darrell Green or Sean Taylor jersey through town and get a few strange looks… :-)
If you are round Nurnberg anytime during gameday… or better… gmae night…. would be awesome to watch a game with someone rather than alone with a beer and depression – or loud shouts at 3am
…. starting whistling/singing that damn song after hearing it so many times… To avoid being violent with a woman I felt like pulling a random stranger out of a car and attacking him Fat Albert style..
Rex Grossman WILL be our starter. His wet noodle arm is better for these old codger’s we’re signing. At least they can’t outrun the ball, and he can’t overthrow them. Where is Brunell these days?
They’re getting all these moldy WR’s outta the way first. Seriously, who else is looking at Grossman? I’m betting he’s sitting in his car outside Redskins Park right now waiting for Shanny’s call. Probably pissing in his Wendy’s cup cuz he doesn’t wanna go in the bathroom and miss the phone ringing.
The Redskins now have 15 wide receivers on their roster—Moss, Stallworth, Gaffney, Anthony Armstrong, Leonard Hankerson, Terrence Austin, Taurus Johnson, Brandon Banks, Malcolm Kelly, Niles Paul, Maurice Price, Roydell Williams Brandon Stokely and Aldrick Robinson. Two will go to the PS, five will be left. We might even sign one more or keep Banks but less than half of these guys will be around for Day one & Moss, Stallworth,Armstrong,Hankerson & Gaffney is a helluva lot better than our WR corps from last year.
9ers just told Nate Clements he's going to be released
He’s not going to command the contract he did years ago. If Rogers is gone like we all believe, I say we go hard after Clements. He’s a serviceable starter given what else is on the market.
Cofield(eventhough I’m still a little unsure) – but all the Giants guys I talked to on twitter and blogs say he’ll be good
Wilson(nice replacement for Rogers)
Not trying to dis your opinion ( do people still say dis?) but I don’t see how anyone but Grossmans mom would want to actually see him play. And that’s just during the Bacheloret commercials.
I’m not going to spout all the crap about him leading the Bears to a Superbowl because that was behind a great D.
But given decent protection he can play to a decent level and he knows the offense and showed how with time he can run it pretty well. If we get some help on the OL we could do a lot worse than him this season (and admittedly a lot better) but i’m ok with it for a year.
He showed me his greatest talent is giving the ball to the other team in a variety of fashions. And I’m not just talking last year. He has done this his entire career. This “he knows the offense” crap is wearing thin on me. Sounds just like the Todd Collins debate all over again. “He knows the offense” reminds me of the old " She’s REALLY nice" line.
Still not sure if we will predominately run a 4-3 or a 3-4?
But our offense is going to revolutionize the sport. I predict a super speed-spread offense with 6 and 7 receiver sets, 2 backs, a qb, and only 2 or 3 linemen depending on the call.
Quarterback gets the snap, and fires it up as soon possible. Someone in Burgundy is bound to catch it.
This would be a spread formation. A WR at the TE position. QB the only backfield player more than 5 yards behind the
line of scrimage. The rules would not allow for 6 or 7 eligible receivers and the official would need to be informed on each play which ones were eligible. The clock would be a problem.
But what may be happening is a slight shift in philosophy. It seems apparent to me that they will run a lot of shotgun with 4, sometimes 5 wideouts. I would not be surprised if they carried 7 receivers.
This is why, I think, Kyle wants an extremely intelligent quarterback. Formations and receivers all over the field running timing patterns, each with his own variant adjustments. One guy has to memorize all that, read the defense for each specific call, know his target keys and the adjustment, and then make the throw. All within about 4 seconds. Have to be intelligent to get thru that. Also need good wideouts who will be where they are supposed to be.
All-in-all, I'm feeling pretty good about the team.
The defense is built for a long dominating run. Have to find a replacement for Fletch, and re-sign Landry, but yea…Dominating Defense for a decade is on the way!
but being second worst in yards is a bit misleading and by the looks of things it’s not going to be a true 3-4 and more of a heavy rotation along the front with lots of different looks.
There are still big question at LB and CB depth but I like the progress being made.
How it’s misleading. We were awful, lost a ton of games, and couldn’t stop a baby from getting into the ice cream. And the “hybrid 3-4” is a pipe dream. If that was the case, Jarmon would still be here, and a fat Albert woulda been a starter.
They were only 18th in scoring which is the key stat
and looking at all the DL players brought in there’s no way it’s going to be a standard 3-4. Jarmon is out because he doesn’t fit the mould like the others.
I see it being similar to the Ravens which is pretty much a 4-3 now.
Where you’re getting this. Jarmon was jettisoned cuz he didn’t fit the 3-4. Fat Al ain’t far behind cuz he didn’t wanna play in it. They converted one of the best DE’s in the game to OLB for the switch, and they’re doing it again with Kerrigan. The 3-4 is our defense, whether we like it or not.
I disagree. We played a lot of 4 man front last year.
Albert didn’t want to play anything. Kerrigan has way more upside than Jarmon in my opinion. And the versatility of front 7 will give Haslett multiple options.
A name to consider is Clifton Ryan as a nose. Didn’t play last year to injury, but Haslett drafted him as a nose in 07. He would be cheap, he fits as a run stopper, and could be good insurance.
Somebody mentinoed that Jeremy Jarmon was asked to fluctuate his weight
What was his playing weight? Was he originally taken to play DE in the old 4-3 system, or was he asked to fatten up to play inside? Or was it more recent that he was asked to eat more doughnuts so that he could play DE in the 3-4?
He was about 275 when he came in I believe. He then was asked to drop weight to play 3-4 OLB, then asked to gain to play 3-4 DE. I think he measured out to about 6’3" 290 as of recently but someone else correct me if I’m wrong. He tore his ACL at the end of his rookie year, but it is unclear if it has made any impact because he has seen very little time here.
When can trades officially go through?
Today?
adamvolo - July 27, 2011

Can we still declare a mulligan on this trade?

you will probably shit your pants anyway! You are right though…..we need some OL signings…and somewhat significant ones at that!

I think we'll still see one more WR signed
Braylon Edwards?

Nah, we'll sign two or three
including Plaxico

If he’s not, then trade JJ for him. If they cut Gaffney, pick him up (for what should be a better contract than his current $2.5K/year) and then trade Jarmon for another player or picks.

CarverM - July 27, 2011
And if it is going to happen,
I guess I wouldn’t kill myself if we signed Cullen Jenkins, provided its not for Haynesworth-money (that could be a synonym for ‘wasted money’ at this point.)
CarverM - July 27, 2011
and "happen if we" should read 'happy if we"
engrish fail.
CarverM - July 27, 2011
Carlos
Notice there has not been a single article about another team’s interest? He wants to get paid. I think the ’Skins are letting this play out a little so that he finally realizes that he is not going to get the $$ that he wants, then we will re-sign him. Still a long way to go….
AbnDave - July 27, 2011
My thoughts exactly.
CarverM - July 27, 2011
Hard for me to get behind that
His hands are so bad, I just can’t trust that he’ll be there when it counts.
ThrowItDownBigManThrowItDown - July 27, 2011
I wouldn't be surprised if we resign him
especially if he winds up being cheaper than Joseph and Wilson.
CarverM - July 27, 2011
I agree with you
just makes me nervous. I’d hate to see them re-sign him and watch him cost them a playoff game again. Off course, they are going to have to get a lot better for that to happen.
ThrowItDownBigManThrowItDown - July 27, 2011
I still think
That they are just playing this out. When a team makes a bid, the ‘Skins can outbid and resign. Carlos is looking for #1 CB money and is not the #1 CB. We’ll get there in resigning him or get a better player for our system.
AbnDave - July 27, 2011
Freakin Seahawks.
I just remember thinking that we played so badly in that game (the offense, anyway), but if ’Los catches that can of corn, we win the game.
Reedskin - July 28, 2011
RT
I’d like to see them get two players there. Maybe Brown and Harris. Don’t forget about Gaither in Baltimore either. He can also play LT. Harris could be cheap to use as depth…
ThrowItDownBigManThrowItDown - July 27, 2011
I like Gaither,
but his price tag scares me away. Especially with Al Davis reportedly interested in him.
CarverM - July 27, 2011
and he has been injured
but could be an option if Brown goes elsewhere. If they sign gaither or harris, definitely need a good backup.
ThrowItDownBigManThrowItDown - July 27, 2011
Throw - yes again
Unfortunately, the FO seems to be going with cheaper, second and third tier guys.
Donnio1234 - July 27, 2011
Carver wish list - right with you, man
Donnio1234 - July 27, 2011
Sounds ideal to me.
Wilson would be another good option at corner though for a much better price.

This team is getting worse on offense
not better
Tiller56 - July 27, 2011
Yup.
adamvolo - July 27, 2011
dude
chill we need some better depth at WR, we had santana and one year of good play from Armstrong outside of that what did we have at WR??? stallworth, gafney and stokely give us some viable options while the younger guys develop. i feel better with this than relying on armstrong, hankerson, austin, etc.
rwells87 - July 27, 2011
haha
This is actually very funny
Tiller56 - July 27, 2011
I actually LOL'ed
adamvolo - July 27, 2011
what would you have done at WR?
rwells87 - July 27, 2011
Certainly not this shit!
Tiller56 - July 27, 2011
Hahaha
adamvolo - July 27, 2011
not an answer man what would have you done, whats a better option?? you bring in 14 guys a mix of veterans and young guys and get the best 5-6 WR you can where is the error??
rwells87 - July 27, 2011
Sorry, MAN!
Here DUDE, let me lay it out to you…………………..weed is not your friend
Tiller56 - July 27, 2011
trying to make jokes is all you can do, thats sad man you dont like what they do but cant answer what they should have done, then what do you really want?? we want competition and hungry guys in camp plus think of this stokely knows shannahans system so in a shortened year with less time, how is it not smart to sign a guy who knows the system?
rwells87 - July 27, 2011
Who cares
About the shortened year? John-friction-Beck is our quarterback. We were gonna lose this year no matter how long it was. Better to lose with young guys than old.
CJHutch - July 27, 2011
aww, give the fell a chance.
hsoup - July 27, 2011

hsoup - July 27, 2011
I can't answer what they should have done?? Really?????
Have you been under a freakin rock for the last 6 months??
Tiller56 - July 27, 2011
There's no error
I agree, these are good veteran players that are good signings. I am glad that we aren’t making the big splash, multi year, multi-million dollar signings that we are known for
ENsDad27 - July 27, 2011
We don’t need a bunch of bodies that don’t know the game yet (at NFL speed) and there is no time to filter them out.
matthiasstephan - July 27, 2011
Exactly
AbnDave - July 27, 2011
+1
prc805 - July 27, 2011
Personally?
CJHutch - July 27, 2011
Bingo.
JLynnDC - July 27, 2011
Exactly
I think this pinpoints how the majority of those of us unhappy with today’s deals feel.
terp121 - July 27, 2011
you would rather find out during the season what a guy has rather than bring in guys who have done something and make the young guys work for a spot? so if hankerson and austin dont pan out we just ride it out till the end of the year with them, dont follow that logic to well.
rwells87 - July 27, 2011
What are we riding out?

Tiller56 - July 27, 2011
we are reabuilding
but you can’t just have a squad full of rookies and young players.

Tiller56 - July 27, 2011

4.5 for “great routes”
6.5 for “great hands”
8 for “mentors / teaches young guys”
27.5 for “competion”
terp121 - July 27, 2011
29.5 for "Good Locker Room Guy"
Tiller56 - July 27, 2011

terp121 - July 27, 2011

9.5 for “training camp body”
12 for “not going to make the roster”

ThuGodfather - July 27, 2011

adamvolo - July 27, 2011
Stokley is a training camp body.
We learned our lesson on 35 year old receivers with Joey Galloway, right? Right?
CarverM - July 27, 2011
Yea I wouldn't worry about it too much.
Parks Smith - July 27, 2011
TC Bodies
I am thinking the same thing with some of these signings, but this is great for our team. Bring in the competition, let the roster fall on the best players we have as opposed to sticking with the status quo and hoping that what we have will develop. This is how a team rebuilds. We should all embrace it!
AbnDave - July 27, 2011
Bullshit
How is it fair to bring in veterans to compete with draft picks when there’s no OTA’s or training camps at all for the entire season.
It’s a recipe for disaster. The half-decent veteran will replace the good youngsters every time.
horatius - July 27, 2011
Don't you think the coaches take this into account when making selections?
Come on man.
CarverM - July 27, 2011
I disagree
Shanallen have a plan for all of this and our young guys are in the mix. If they show their talents, the older vets will either be traded or cut, that is the genius behind the one-year deal. Patience my friend.
AbnDave - July 27, 2011
All these WRs sort of suggest that the coaches aren't really revved up about
Paul and Robinson (the other drafted WR – forget his name right now).
Donnio1234 - July 27, 2011
Then the youngsters will end up on the PS
We don’t have any talent there now anyway
ENsDad27 - July 27, 2011
If any of those WR's end up on the PS
They be signed the next day by a competent team
Tiller56 - July 27, 2011
Cannot sign a PS player unless that player agrees to the contract
We stole a few last year but did not lose a single talented player. Something has to be said there…
AbnDave - July 27, 2011
We did loose one guy
but it was a cut. Dixon, who went on to play well for the Eagles
Tiller56 - July 27, 2011

CJHutch - July 27, 2011

Tiller56 - July 27, 2011
LOL
Nice
AbnDave - July 27, 2011
Wynn and Holliday
Yep. Worry. They should have been gone a long time ago, but we did add to the defense as well, so both of them should be gone this year.
AbnDave - July 27, 2011
Well yeah, but what young guy would not sign a contract for a roster spot
over a practice squad slot? A lot more money. I’ve wondered what the deal is with the PS – certainly the team cannot have a right of first refusal, because that would make the PS meaningless. They probably can’t even tamper or lean on the guy – would seem to be unethical. I would think that if somebody claimed somebody, they’re gone.
Donnio1234 - July 27, 2011
Hankerson will be on our roster
both Niles Paul & Aldrick Robinson are far from being NFL ready. The PS is the best place for them to learn our system & become legitimate NFL players
ENsDad27 - July 27, 2011
Could be PS players
But then again, WRs do take time to develop and how do we develop them between now and 9/11? I am happy with the signings and still think that some of these 1-yr vets will be gone before the first game.
Don’t get too attached to anyone over the next year or two as this (I think) is the new status quo for our team until Shanallen have THEIR guys.
AbnDave - July 27, 2011
Thats pretty sad id Stokley is "their guy"
Tiller56 - July 27, 2011
THE LESSON IS DONT SIGN THEM IN THE FIRST PLACE!!!!
terp121 - July 27, 2011
The simple fact is
that you need to have a ton of these skill guys in training camp, so that your starters can have a break between routes in the 100+ degree August heat.
CarverM - July 27, 2011
um I don't see one good reason not to?
Worst case scenario is they suck and get cut quickly.
PJ_21 - July 27, 2011
The problem is
you fool the coaches into thinking these guys should make the roster while someone like Hankerson, Paul, Helu, Royster etc fails to gain their needed reps / experience and ends up on the practice squad.
terp121 - July 27, 2011
They should hire you
You obviously know how to run an NFL roster and training camp.
CarverM - July 27, 2011
As do you
“The simple fact is

rainmanc345 - July 27, 2011
No they won't
there are new restrictions on the number of padded practices. There won’t be many reps to go around.
ThrowItDownBigManThrowItDown - July 27, 2011
Uh, No
Worse case scenario is that they suck, we still keep them, and theyre starting on day one. Just like last year.
CJHutch - July 27, 2011
everyone getting all worked up over these signings needs to chill out
In my mind we have made 3 moves that are of any significance….
But I doubt we stick with what we have after those 3 guys.
jeffco01 - July 27, 2011
That's about right
though I didn’t really like the Jarmon trade.
Jim America - July 27, 2011
Justin Tuck on Cofield
"I pushed hard to get that guy [Cofield] back because I know how important he is to the entire scheme of our defense," Tuck said. "He’s one of those guys that you really can’t put a price on how much he meant to this football team. If I had it my way — and I’m sure the Giants did — but I would try my best to get him back."
hsoup - July 27, 2011

The PS isn’t a death sentence. Sometimes the PS is the right place for young, inexperienced players. This is going to be even more true this year, since the rooks aren’t getting as much time to get used to the pro game/playbooks, etc. before the season starts.

some of you guys are so used to bad moves nothing seems ok to you... think it through one year deals for veterans to come in and compete.
rwells87 - July 27, 2011
THATS
The only reason I’m not upset about the Stallworth and Stokely signings. One year deals. But I would still rather see our young guys compete with each other, rather than creaky old vets.
CJHutch - July 27, 2011
If this avalanche of mediocre players is so helpful...
Why are 31 other teams not signing these castoffs at such an alarming rate? I understand the party line on “mentoring” and “experience” but at some point, you have enough of those guys. Last year, we brought in several “random” vets for training camp… and embarrassingly they even played in some games. We are redundant now with mediocre (and aged) depth, not some mystical training camp competition elixir. I guess this is what happens when you don’t draft for a decade?
CapitalDominion - July 27, 2011
Not freaking out
but I feel like all they’re paying attention to is stockpiling every WR available and there’s been little to zero attention to other problem areas such as o-line. Of course waiting could help drive prices down but still.
JLynnDC - July 27, 2011
I think those deals are being discussed in the background
but there will be a lot more interest from other teams for the better players so they will inevitably take a lot more time to be worked out.
In the meantime we are bringing the extra bodies needed for camp.
PJ_21 - July 27, 2011
Probably but where are the extra bodies for RB or CB or any other position?
Except QB of course.

Why the hell can’t NFL network get some new commercials… If I have to see the one with Dan Synder and his wife dropping the jersey on the table or those damn kids singing in the bus about getting excercise one more time Im going to punch my computer….

Rex Grossman WILL be our starter. His wet noodle arm is better for these old codger’s we’re signing. At least they can’t outrun the ball, and he can’t overthrow them. Where is Brunell these days?
CJHutch - July 27, 2011
He needs to be signed first
Parks Smith - July 27, 2011
Just a formailty
They’re getting all these moldy WR’s outta the way first. Seriously, who else is looking at Grossman? I’m betting he’s sitting in his car outside Redskins Park right now waiting for Shanny’s call. Relax
The Redskins now have 15 wide receivers on their roster—Moss, Stallworth, Gaffney, Anthony Armstrong, Leonard Hankerson,
Terrence Austin, Taurus Johnson, Brandon Banks, Malcolm Kelly,Niles Paul,Maurice Price, Roydell Williams Brandon Stokelyand Aldrick Robinson. Two will go to the PS, five will be left. We might even sign one more or keep Banks but less than half of these guys will be around for Day one & Moss, Stallworth,Armstrong,Hankerson & Gaffney is a helluva lot better than our WR corps from last year.ENsDad27 - July 27, 2011

Draft Picks and UDFA's

I see other teams have started….

most notable seems to be Willie Smith OL from ECU
only a few draft picks have signed in the entire NFL as far as i know
Derek F - July 27, 2011
I did

Smart signing…………………….cudos to the staff on this one
Tiller56 - July 27, 2011

Cuz I know the Ravens were happy to trade for him last year after sucking wind at corner.
CJHutch - July 27, 2011
Last tweet from @profootballfocus
QBs throwing at Carlos Rogers last season had a 95.2 rating. Throwing at Josh Wilson they were just 67.8 – DC upgraded
PJ_21 - July 27, 2011
Plus there is the age factor
with him being a lot younger.
PJ_21 - July 27, 2011
Dunno if that's a fair stat
Given the defenses each played on. Personally, I’m hoping he’s not the last corner we sign.
CJHutch - July 27, 2011
He's definitly starter quality
Tiller56 - July 27, 2011
Not denying it
I like the move. But now we have 2 sub 6’ corners in a division th Dez Bryant, Maclin, and Nicks.
CJHutch - July 27, 2011
Yeah, I know. It could be an issue
Green was even shorter, and he was great, and was always shorter than every WR he went up against
Tiller56 - July 27, 2011
Yep I was thinking that
I think they are probably pretty even but the age and money is a huge plus.
Also Rogers might now see the money isn’t there for him and could come back for a reasonable deal.
PJ_21 - July 27, 2011
I don't see Rogers coming back
Tiller56 - July 27, 2011

Josh Wilson allowed 46.9% of passes into his coverage to be complete in 2010, Rogers 69.4% – Repeat. UPgrade
PJ_21 - July 27, 2011
The age is an upgrade alone
His skill is very close. His hands are definitly better.
Tiller56 - July 27, 2011
ha
I’m not sure they could have been any worse! I’m pretty sure ’Los hands are on backwards.
PJ_21 - July 27, 2011

part of it is the pass rush, though. Washington should be better in that category this year.
ThrowItDownBigManThrowItDown - July 27, 2011

CJHutch - July 27, 2011

Tiller56 - July 27, 2011

I don’t think it means a thing. Just another arm for training camp. I have a feeling they’re gonna sign another QB.
CJHutch - July 27, 2011
IDK
He just doesn’t do it for me
Tiller56 - July 27, 2011
Me neither
But his name doesn’t start with Rex and end with Grossman, so it’s a step in the right direction.
CJHutch - July 27, 2011
And for running the opponents' plays during the season.

Not trying to dis your opinion ( do people still say dis?) but I don’t see how anyone but Grossmans mom would want to actually see him play. And that’s just during the Bacheloret commercials.
CJHutch - July 27, 2011
I want to see Grossman play
For the eagles. (insert sob)
brettpedigo - July 27, 2011
Here here
I’ll drink to that
CJHutch - July 27, 2011
He's not THAT bad
I’m not going to spout all the crap about him leading the Bears to a Superbowl because that was behind a great D.
But given decent protection he can play to a decent level and he knows the offense and showed how with time he can run it pretty well. If we get some help on the OL we could do a lot worse than him this season (and admittedly a lot better) but i’m ok with it for a year.
PJ_21 - July 27, 2011
Sorry
He showed me his greatest talent is giving the ball to the other team in a variety of fashions. And I’m not just talking last year. He has done this his entire career. This “he knows the offense” crap is wearing thin on me. Sounds just like the Todd Collins debate all over again. “He knows the offense” reminds me of the old " She’s REALLY nice" line.
CJHutch - July 27, 2011
I don't mind the Cofield signing because he's a hard worker apprently
Was never a big ’Los fan so I LOVE the Josh Wilson signing, I wanted J. Joseph at first but he has serious injury concerns. The recievers…meh…
adamvolo - July 27, 2011

RibDawg - July 27, 2011
Still not sure if we will predominately run a 4-3 or a 3-4?
But our offense is going to revolutionize the sport. I predict a super speed-spread offense with 6 and 7 receiver sets, 2 backs, a qb, and only 2 or 3 linemen depending on the call.
Quarterback gets the snap, and fires it up as soon possible. Someone in Burgundy is bound to catch it.
JDC15 - July 27, 2011
Flag Football Rules
RibDawg - July 27, 2011
Wasn't this Spurrior's offense?
Tiller56 - July 27, 2011
Mr. Spurrier comes to Washington
Haven’t we been here before? ’Cept now half our 6 and 7 wide receiver sets need walkers to get downfield
CJHutch - July 27, 2011
This would be a spread formation. A WR at the TE position. QB the only backfield player more than 5 yards behind the
line of scrimage. The rules would not allow for 6 or 7 eligible receivers and the official would need to be informed on each play which ones were eligible. The clock would be a problem.
Jefferson1935 - July 27, 2011
I Know. I was only joking.
JDC15 - July 27, 2011
I knew you were joking and only followed up on it. June Jones would not be joking.
Jefferson1935 - July 28, 2011
So aside from McNabb officially gone, Wilson, Gaffney, and Stokley
I miss any news/rumors since Kellen Clemens signed?
BigOLinemen - July 27, 2011
Nope that covers it.
PJ_21 - July 27, 2011
Thanks
BigOLinemen - July 27, 2011
I challenged you to a Haynesworth conditioning test
Tiller56 - July 27, 2011
Luckily
We don’t hafta go through that this year. The lockout wiped out all OTA’s. Plus, I’m pretty sure the new CBA bans all personal grudge matches
CJHutch - July 27, 2011
I can do it
6’4" 315lbs is a little big, but I got cardiovascular endurance unlike McNabb. I’ll get it done.
BigOLinemen - July 27, 2011
No additional UDFA from what I can tell.
Jefferson1935 - July 27, 2011
All-in-all, I'm feeling pretty good about the team.
The defense is built for a long dominating run. Have to find a replacement for Fletch, and re-sign Landry, but yea…Dominating Defense for a decade is on the way!
JDC15 - July 27, 2011
Hate to piss in yer Fruity Pebbles
But we’re talking about the 2nd worse defense in the league. Not to mention a 3-4 still lacking a true nose tackle. I’ll settle for improved.
CJHutch - July 27, 2011
Umm CJHutch you must not be following Free Agency
We traded JJ for a true NT and his name is Gaffney . . . because there is no way we thought we needed another receiver hahahaha
RibDawg - July 27, 2011
Not that I think they will dominate
but being second worst in yards is a bit misleading and by the looks of things it’s not going to be a true 3-4 and more of a heavy rotation along the front with lots of different looks.
There are still big question at LB and CB depth but I like the progress being made.
PJ_21 - July 27, 2011
I don't see
How it’s misleading. We were awful, lost a ton of games, and couldn’t stop a baby from getting into the ice cream. And the “hybrid 3-4” is a pipe dream. If that was the case, Jarmon would still be here, and a fat Albert woulda been a starter.
CJHutch - July 27, 2011
They were only 18th in scoring which is the key stat
and looking at all the DL players brought in there’s no way it’s going to be a standard 3-4. Jarmon is out because he doesn’t fit the mould like the others.
I see it being similar to the Ravens which is pretty much a 4-3 now.
PJ_21 - July 27, 2011
I don't think we will be a set 3-4 team with a true nose.
I think we might even be more 4-3 or 4-2. Constant formation changes without changing personnel. I’m loving where I think this defense is going.
JDC15 - July 27, 2011
I don't see
Where you’re getting this.
CJHutch - July 27, 2011
I disagree. We played a lot of 4 man front last year.
Albert didn’t want to play anything. Kerrigan has way more upside than Jarmon in my opinion. And the versatility of front 7 will give Haslett multiple options.
JDC15 - July 27, 2011
They may line up in a 4-3 with Kerrakpo on 3's.
And then pull one or both off into a 3-4, or vice versa.
Landry is basically a linebacker when they go 4-2.
JDC15 - July 27, 2011
Cofield and Jenkins can shuffle on the line,
giving different looks. Still have Bryant, and Kemo to play situational nose.
JDC15 - July 27, 2011
I think Kemo is going to be cut
Who we do still have is Haynesworth
Tiller56 - July 27, 2011
I just can't picture Albert here for much longer.
A name to consider is Clifton Ryan as a nose. Didn’t play last year to injury, but Haslett drafted him as a nose in 07. He would be cheap, he fits as a run stopper, and could be good insurance.
JDC15 - July 27, 2011
Any word on Jenkins yet?
brettpedigo - July 27, 2011
pass
I bet we pass due to durability concerns.
hsoup - July 27, 2011
Id rather an Alan Branch
Tiller56 - July 27, 2011
+1
PJ_21 - July 27, 2011
That'd be nice
I’d even be content with Kelly Gregg while we find out about Nield.
CJHutch - July 27, 2011
WELCOME JOSH WILSON!!
ADIOS #22
Elaw6 - July 27, 2011

I’d be for VY
Tiller56 - July 27, 2011
Dunno
If I’d wanna see it, but I wouldn’t be surprised. The Junkies made a compelling case for it this morning.
CJHutch - July 27, 2011
There could be worse QB's than VY
I can think of 2 and they are both on our roster (REX and Clemmens)
RibDawg - July 27, 2011
You forgot Beck
Tiller56 - July 27, 2011
He would have to be able to get pass security first
RibDawg - July 27, 2011
Is the unassuming ones you have to watch out for
Maybe Beck has a pro-bowl year
Tiller56 - July 27, 2011
and maybe we win the SUPER BOWL this year
(maybe this isn’t Kool-Aid i’m thinking it’s Jungle Juice)
RibDawg - July 27, 2011
Ah................the good ole' Jungle Juice
How I miss those college days
Tiller56 - July 27, 2011
Just because you graduate college doesn't mean you need to stop drinking the Jungle Juice
RibDawg - July 27, 2011

$(ers Re-signed DE McDonald
Which means Franklin likely is gone due to money(or lack there of)
Tiller56 - July 27, 2011
sorry, meant 49ers
Tiller56 - July 27, 2011
Interesting
Are we in the Franklin sweepstakes for real, or is that just another “big name FA probably gonna go to the Skins”?
BigOLinemen - July 27, 2011
Well, the McDonald signing prob means he's not going back to San Fran
Tiller56 - July 27, 2011
Yeah i've heard very little on the Franklin front
RibDawg - July 27, 2011
I'm declaring tomorow O-Linemen Day!
Gaither
Blalock
Chester
Cole
Colon
Henderson
Brown
Dahl
First come, first serve!
Tiller56 - July 27, 2011
I'm hoping for a triple scoop
BigOLinemen - July 27, 2011
I'll take Brown, Brisiel as G, and Henderson as swing T.
I’d be happy to start the season with that. Fix what needs fixin next draft.
JDC15 - July 27, 2011
Yeah man! go! go! go!
Donnio1234 - July 27, 2011
Rice signs with seattle?
@AdamSchefter Adam Schefter
Here are WR Sidney Rice’s numbers with Seattle: fivr years up to $44 million including $18.5 million guaranteed.
Derek F - July 27, 2011
Makes sense
He can reunite with Jackson
Tiller56 - July 27, 2011
Why would you want to reunite with Jackson...?
BigOLinemen - July 27, 2011
They're Boys
Tiller56 - July 27, 2011
Seattle really going crazy. May be tougher than I thought
Donnio1234 - July 27, 2011
They did the same thing last year
Parks Smith - July 27, 2011
Time to sign out for the night
Hoping to see some OL movement by morning!
PJ_21 - July 27, 2011
As long as #22 is off the Redskins this offseason will have been gold in my eyes
Elaw6 - July 27, 2011
This defense is going to look completely different.
Kerrigan, Jenkins, Cofield, Wilson, Atogwe, Riley/Henson/?
And we’re not done yet.
JDC15 - July 27, 2011
Wait
Did Cullen Jenkins happen? Or are you talking Jarvis?
BigOLinemen - July 27, 2011
Jarvis
Mr PotatoHead - July 27, 2011
Just checking man
I don’t have sources like you other kids.
BigOLinemen - July 27, 2011
Most of the top O-linemen...
who did not re-sign with their own team are still on the market.
I still have plenty of hope that the "skins will get a couple of good guys for the line.
Definately happy with the Moss, Cofield, and Wilson signings. I’m ok with all the budget WR’s too. So far, things are looking pretty good.
Mr PotatoHead - July 27, 2011
Been at a client dinner, miss anything big besides Wilson?
Parks Smith - July 27, 2011
Everything's quiet on the Eastern front
BigOLinemen - July 27, 2011
Somebody mentinoed that Jeremy Jarmon was asked to fluctuate his weight
What was his playing weight? Was he originally taken to play DE in the old 4-3 system, or was he asked to fatten up to play inside? Or was it more recent that he was asked to eat more doughnuts so that he could play DE in the 3-4?
And what was his injury?
Thanks!
Rodney A - July 27, 2011
He was asked to play DE in the old 4-3
He was about 275 when he came in I believe.
BigOLinemen - July 27, 2011
Thank you much!
