Hogs Haven

Redskins Round Table - Rookie Discussion

There was a poll question that was posted on Hogs Haven during the summer asking how many of the players selected in the draft this year would actually make the final roster, the majority of people who answered thought that number would be 7 or more. How many of the drafted rookies do you believe will make the team after hearing/seeing how they have done in camp so far?

Kevin

These type of questions are really tough given no games have been played, having said that, Kerrigan, Jenkins, Hankerson, and Helu are all locks. I don't see Neild making the team. WR competition has 4 guys locked in and that leaves little room for Banks, Austin, Niles Paul, and Aldrick Robinson. Figuring Banks is already a year in this system, I put him in the others and add Niles Paul too.

Markus White I think cracks the team and the rest get cut.

In terms of how the team handles it's rookies, I can envision them doing a lot of what they did in 2010. They could practice squad a number of players, with the hope of eventually bringing them up somewhere down the road.

As far as how many will make the roster for Week 1? I'd say there's a good chance Kerrigan, Jenkins, Hankerson, Helu, Paul make it on there. Brandyn Thompson, Chris Nield, DJ Gomes and Markus White look to be on the outside looking in at this point. As for Aldrick Robinson, Evan Royster, and Maurice Hurt, I'd say it's a 50/50 chance based on how their preseason goes and if there are any injury situations at those positions.

So right now? I'd say 7 is a good bet.

I'm going to go out on a limb a bit and say that 10 of our drafted rookies make it, and an 11th in UDFA offensive tackle Willie Smith. I think the top four picks are obvious locks, but they will have plenty of rookie company. I feel defensive back DeJon Gomes is near a lock to make this team, as both Kareem Moore and Chris Horton have had plenty of time to impress the coaches and since they are impending free agents they don't have a lot of upside. Wide receiver Niles Paul has been impressive at camp so far, and he has big time upside making him a lock. Aldrick Robinson could face a numbers game at the receiver position, but if the Skins keep six, I think he has a real shot given his special teams potential. Evan Royster could face a numbers game as well, but given the questionable health of Torain and the fumbling issues with Hightower, I think it is quite possible.

As for the 7th rounders’ I feel that all four could have a legitimate shot, but likely only two will be kept. CB Brandyn Thompson appears to be on the outside looking in for the 5th corner role, but he is definitely still in the mix. Guard Maurice Hurt is already moving ahead of some of last year's rookies and looks to have a strong shot at making the team. Outside linebacker Markus White could make it if they keep four outside linebackers, but he isn't a lock. And nose tackle Chris Neild is definitely in the mix.

In the end a lot is going to come down to how many players the Redskins keep at certain positions. Ten could end up being high, but I have a feeling Shanahan and Allen will try to keep as many as possible.

Ken

Now, I generally don't know jack about this but I'll give it a go. I am going with Kerrigan, Jenkins, Hank the Tank, Helu, and Niles. I think Nield and Aldrick are practice squad bound. The surprise could end up being that Evan Royster makes the team.

HTTR4LIFE

It’s real early to be fully sure, but I believe that 7-8 of the drafted rookies could make the team. A quick glance at the depth chart as it stands now Chris Hurt appears in position to possibly make the team with Ryan Kerrigan, Jarvis Jenkins, Leonard Hankerson and Roy Helu all seeming to be locks at this point. From what I have heard Jenkins has impressed in camp thus far and looks to be a steal, I have said since we drafted him I thought he was the guy who made Da’Quan Bowers look so good in college. Niles Paul is in some tough competition to make the team but I believe he will, Aldrick Robinson, Chris Neild and Thompson seem destined for the practice squad. DJ Gomes is a question mark at this point as Coach Shanahan has said it is going to take time for him, could go either way but I think he will see the practice squad as well.

I believe that Markus White and Evan Royster are on the bubble and need some playing time to prove if they can make the team or not, so I am going to call these two guys maybe’s at this point, injuries in the preseason could lead to them both making the team.

i think we get 7.

Kerrigan, Jenkins, Hank, Helu, Hurt, White, and Paul. To take that a step further I think that by week 6 Kerrigan, Jenkins, Hank and Paul will be starters while Hurt, White, and Helu are rotational / #2 players. If we are counting UDFAs i think Willie Smith also makes the team. I also predict Hurt and Smith develop into solid starters by 2013.

One more draft like this one will do wonders for the skins.

I think Austin makes it over Banks
Yeah i think Banks is pretty low on the totem pole right now
On the depth chart they had Banks at both KR and PR

Pretty useful, and makes any WR work he does pure “gravy”.

yeah but having a capable 5th WR is more important than him being a slightly better return man than say

Paul, Armstrong, Robinson etc.

If he were to light it up in preseason, I could see Banks still making the team, otherwise Austin/Paul could beat him out.

Banks took a hit

when they changed the rules on kickoffs. Much less likely to get a return now, so the returner isn’t as important.

His punt return skills are very solid

He looked decent at WR too.

I still want Banks as a returner...God knows we could use the field position.
I can't wait

until we get to see these guys actually on the field and see how they are doing. If Banks gets a couple of big returns in preseason, he will get his spot.

— Wide receiver-kick returner Brandon Banks was practicing the Deion Sanders dance during a break in punt return drills. Later, Brandon Banks flashed his speed and elusiveness, trying to escape tacklers by running left, then right, then left again.
Dance Baby Dance...

I predict he dances 3-4 times in the end zone this season on special teams, and may get one on an end around or reverse. Keep the explosiveness!

I think we should go with austin

Is it not a concern

that hank is listed so low on the depth chart?

I don't think it is a real concern

i mean even guys like Paul who are lighting it up are listed low

Fourth WR is low?

He’s on the list as one of the top four WRs.

I’d at least like to see him at 3 and get gaffney off the team

Sorry

Gaffney will be on the roster. He’ll be a productive safety-net, possession receiver for our undependable qbs

gay

throw the young guys to the wolves

stupid adjective to use.

be smarter.

why do you want gaffney off the team?

younger than moss and had 800 something yards recieving last year. The young guys will get their touches

Not if some young guy gets forced off the team

Gaffney costs a roster spot and he isn’t part of the teams future I hope they cut him

thank you

Line up should be by mid season. Moss LH and AA in the slot, athough I hope paul could take the slot position away. OR even better LH MK Moss in the slot. I know thats wishful thinking

umm then we did force a young guy off the team in Jarmon for no return
+1
I wouldn't have traded for gaffney in the first place

Let’s not compound our mistakes

i probably wouldn't have traded for him either

but now that we did, i’ll take the upgrade

Kevin and "Soup" win

For spelling Neild correctly.

Clarification…when you ask how many will make the roster, you just mean week one, right? Not how many will make the roster at some point during the year?

i read it as week 1, and that is how I'm guessing most people read it
correct....week 1
Been hearing good things about White

Surprised only Kevin mentioned him as a possible to make it

Kerrigan, Jenkins, Hankerson, and Helu

Are the obvious locks.

I think that Paul is making a very strong case for himself too.

With the lack of depth on the O-line, Hurt may also find a spot. It seems that he has jumped ahead of Capers and Cook.

Neild, White, Gomes, and Royster will depend on how many players they keep at their position. Torain’s health will be a big factor for Royster. Moore’s health for Gomes.

Robinson, Thompson, and Smith will end up on the Practice Squad.

I thought it was standard policy

to keep all the draft picks on the team so the GM could prove how good he is at drafting.

That rule of thumb would make sense with 7 draft picks but not as likely with 12 picks. Not knowing how the Team

would do with in filling needs in free agency very likely effected the the Skins draft strategy since the draft occurred before FA “Best player available” in the draft may have taken priority over “team needs” had free agency occurred first.

I was trying to make a cerrato joke

Like when the “playoff caliber team” had all of it’s draft picks in 2008 make the team.

THE TOP 5 PICKS IN THE DRAFT ARE LOCKS

but I would like to see as many as possible make the team or be on the practice squad. On another note has anyone heard anything about Helu? I was hoping that he would be in contention get some serious playing time this year but so far I have not heard anything about him

it sounds like he is running really well

but struggling in blitz pickup. Most rookies do struggle in blocking, but it will keep him on the sideline for a bunch of plays if he can’t improve a little bit

lol.
THE TOP 5 PICKS IN THE DRAFT ARE LOCKS

Does that really warrant caps lock? In any case, I think he will get a lot of playing time because Torain has so much trouble staying healthy. Even though I think Hightower will be the week one starter, Helu should get in some carries as the season progresses. And if Hightower doesn’t fix his fumbling problems soon Helu could take over. After all, if there’s anything that Shanahan does well, it’s picking running backs and making them succeed in his system. Certainly he saw a lot of talent in Helu if he was willing to draft him.

on Helu...

not only draft him, but trade up to get him.

fwiw...

still on the helu train, but i really hope royster gets a fair shake.

I do as well....

but I think that means we carry 4. Hightower, Torain, Helu and Royster. I really like Torain, but we will have to see how this injury plays out.

+1

thats a nice backfield with a lot of upside

Royster is junk if someone has to go it should be him

I didn’t think he looked that great in highschool

I know right.

And did you see film from him in middle school? That guy was garbage.

And he was small
He's a local product

And Penn state alum so the homer fans love him, but he isn’t good and I’m sticking to that.

do you mean like banks fumble/muff problems in the last preseason?

hightower is the starter if torain is out. i think its a safe bet.

Aside from the obvious

I don’t see how Neild doesn’t make this team. A young, talented NT, who has actually played the position before……my guess is he stays. Robinson, on potential and talent alone, should make the team over Austin, Banks and Stallworth. The “Hurt Locker” is a lock IMO, and is my boy Free Willie Smith. Royster is my wildcard right now. I’ll still say he is PS bound, but time will tell.

Definitely at least practice squad

and will need to suit up for at least 4-5 games this season. NT is a tough spot to play and we don’t have a ton of depth.

Aside from the obvious I don’t see how Neild doesn’t make this team.

You should have seen him at practice yesterday. Late of the snap…didn’t get good penetration. Coaches were yelling at him. Granted it was a goaline drill and 1 day….but at least it’s something to base a decision off. Practice squad is a good spot for him. Maybe he’ll impress in games….but Antony Bryant and Worthington looked much better.

late off* the snap

was Worthington playing NT?
The Team will probably keep 4 DE and Worthington is not likely to be in one of the 53 roster spots. Unless the

defense is placing more infuses on penetration rather than on gap control, Neild is likely to stay.

Edit "emphasis" in and "infuses" out.
Is Cofield getting any reps at NT?

I haven’t heard much about it.

Hurt has been a nice surprise overall. Originally I thought he didn't have much chance with guys like Cook, Capers, Fulton etc.

but he seems to be pretty solid. At this point he might make the team over Hicks.

I cant see us letting Royster walk

i think he would be claimed by someone before he cleared waivers and made it to our PS

There are too many guys to protect.
He doesn't do any one thing well

Not speedy, not a great pass blocker. Thats a big key to watch tonight…which running backs save Lichtensteiger’s ass on 3rd and long.

Welp pt.3

Kevin – White is not making the team…Jenkins, Carriker, Bowen, and some random DE not named White emerging during the preseason is why…

D Fish – You listed 5 names then said 7 is a good bet which means you are banking on one of our defensive backs making it and Hurt…i’ll take the under at 6.5

Stevie Wonder – smh I think you wrote all that just to get on my nerves…look at what you wrote…you basically said this about everybody “I think (insert name) will make it…I just do even though i’m not following anything we did this offseason and I think we have about 70+ roster spots”

TO BE CONTINUED…

wow...

you do realize that Markus White isn’t a defensive end, so I don’t think that Jenkins and company make much of an impact on his roster battle.

I do think that just about everyone has at least a shot to make the team, and that it will be tough for team to cut these rookies as opposed to the guys who couldn’t make the team last year.

continuing...

Ken – you know they only posted your entry, because you are a manager…to bad you can’t manage the Hogs Haven fantasy football situation. I agree with sentence #2 though

HTTR4Lyfe – going to the practice squad does not mean making the team. Royster has to light it up and Torain has to start the season on the PUP list to make the team. Neither is happening so forget about it…

Its sad none of you guys can nail a perfect answer for such a easy question. SteveO once again finish last and no one is first…disappointed in HTTR

when did I say going to the practice squad = making the team? i clearly wrote 7-8…..meaning 7 to 8 COULD make the team.

Once you've started practicing in training camp

You are no longer eligable for the PUP list. Since torain got injured while practicing in training camp, he is not eligable. If he remains injured, their only choices are to put him on IR, Keep him on the roster until he heals and can play, or cut him (with an injury settlement if he has not been medically cleared to play).

You mean they got Landry and Moore on the PUP list by never letting them practice the first time?

And once they come off, they’re off for good?

That is correct

And it was a smart move. They can be activated whenever they are healthy enough to play, and they don’t take up a roster spot in the mean time.

I think you should be the commissioner of HH FF #3

situation managed.

How’s Gomes doing so far?

Saw him on CSN

and he was pretty humble about the whole experience so far. He said he was learning from the vets while they were out with some injuries. Mentioned Horton and Moore as tow players who were really helping his development.

up and down

He definitely has a shot.

I hope he makes it.

The guy has a lot of talent. He just needs to figure things out. Find a real position. Focus on special teams first. Then see if he can work his way into a nickelback situation. His jr. year at Nebraska he was the nickelback and was really a game-changer. He came in and made so many big plays. I just hope the rest of his game develops so he can show off his ball-hawking ability.

I am really excited for Hulu. I believe he will be the starter by years end and will have 900+ yards. He would seem to really fit into the zone blocking scheme well.

The fantasy boys on ESPN

really liked Hightower as a sleeper. He could take a huge chunk of yards from Helu.

Shanny likes RB by committee

And Hightower, regarding his fumbles, basically said I’m not going to change the way I run…otherwise Im not focusing on my instincts in hitting holes.

I think Helu will get reps.
