The Redskins will draft in the sixth spot in April's NFL Draft. The Skins came into the day with their best possible selection being fourth overall and eighth overall at the very worst. After losing 34-10 against the Eagles today, the worst spot the Skins could then finish was sixth. The Skins finished at sixth as a result of the Buccaneers getting trounced by the Falcons and Browns losing a tight contest to the Pittsburgh Steelers.
The Redskins will likely be in the market for a QB in the first round, but will need to avoid trades and, perhaps, the Cleveland Browns to obtain a top flight quarterback.
1. Indianapolis Colts (1-15)
2. St. Louis Rams (2-14)
3. Minnesota Vikings (3-13)
4. Cleveland Browns (4-12)
5. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (4-12)
6. Washington Redskins (5-11)
On Tuesday I will release my full 2012 First Round Mock Draft. Let the discussion begin!

glad this season is over
can not wait for FA and the draft!!! really hope we get lucky and get a qb that will lead us to the playoffs
munson21502 - January 1, 2012
gotta say this free agency period is real intriguing to me
a lot will unfold i think…we’ve got cap space and holes to fill
atark001 - January 1, 2012
How many picks do the skins have?
How many total picks do we have and what rounds?
williamhudsonlink - January 1, 2012
we have them all plus some ones 4th i think
munson21502 - January 1, 2012
thanks
williamhudsonlink - January 1, 2012
Not sure yet, depends on comp picks and what not. I believe right now we have 9 picks... maybe?
Two fourths (Campbell trade)
Two sixths (McNabb Trade)
Parks Smith - January 1, 2012
didn't we give up a sixth or seventh in the hightower trade?
atark001 - January 1, 2012
Steve was saying due to his injury we may not have to give up anything. Don't quote me though.
Parks Smith - January 1, 2012
i've yet to see what those conditions are so it is possible we lose either the 6th or 7th
but unless the condition was just making the team, I’m guessing they weren’t met. Usually it will be based on yards or % of snaps, so i’m doubting we give anything up.
Steve Shoup - January 1, 2012
we give up a 6th because of the jamall brown trade
davetrembling - January 2, 2012
no he had to play in 90% of snaps in 2010, which he did not
Steve Shoup - January 2, 2012
thank you for clearing that up
davetrembling - January 2, 2012
that makes more sense
les boulez bomber - January 2, 2012
we are still giving up picks from that trade? are you sure?
les boulez bomber - January 2, 2012
Parks I thought that we have an extra 5th for Fat Albert. Was that a contingent of pick?
WestCoastHokie - January 1, 2012
It was for 2013 though
Parks Smith - January 1, 2012
something to look forward to.
Regardless it is still the most positive contribution that he ever made.
Another question, do you know if the second 6th that we got for McNabb was contingent?
WestCoastHokie - January 1, 2012
Yea it was, I don't know what it was for though
Parks Smith - January 1, 2012
Probably a safe bet that whatever the conditions were they not met.
Any chance that wepickup any compensatory picks? I am the only big FA that I remember that we lost was Rogers but I am not sure how comp picks are awarded.
WestCoastHokie - January 1, 2012
It would be based on this year, I wouldn't expect much
Parks Smith - January 1, 2012
really? he made the pro bowl. how much worse can it get than to lose a free agent who goes on to make the pro bowl for another team?
les boulez bomber - January 2, 2012
Its based on amount lost to gained. One player making the pro bowl means nothing
Parks Smith - January 2, 2012
If we get a comp pick (and i'd say it is about 99.9% chance that we don't)
it will be a 7th rounder
Steve Shoup - January 1, 2012
well at least we got something for him
aFan4Life - January 1, 2012
so it begins
when the brown’s hail mary went limp, i half expected the “quickening” (highlander style) to occur somewhere at redskins part
but for real though, do you think the browns having a higher draft pick will make a trade up (if desired) cheaper for us, because they may be more apt to stand put, or not?
atark001 - January 1, 2012
I don't think the Browns will go QB, but they could be a prime trade candidate
Parks Smith - January 1, 2012
wonder if they would take our number 1 next year to trade up?
munson21502 - January 1, 2012
why would you give up our 1st next year just to move up 2 spots
Steve Shoup - January 1, 2012
to stay in-line with Redskins tradition
Parks Smith - January 1, 2012
well there was talks of us waiting till next year to get a qb
so it would be better to act now instead of going6-10 to 8-8 then have to give up even more in the next draft. maybe browns would take 2 2nds and a 3 for him ?
munson21502 - January 1, 2012
Talks? Where?
Parks Smith - January 1, 2012
on here lol
munson21502 - January 1, 2012
to grab a better franchise QB prospect than would be available to us because you dont expect him to last the next two picks
les boulez bomber - January 2, 2012
yes but again i ask
why would you entertain that trade idea?? It is awful
Steve Shoup - January 2, 2012
i def. wouldn't count them out
Steve Shoup - January 1, 2012
I'm not counting them out but I just don't think they'll go QB. I def think it's a possibility though
Parks Smith - January 1, 2012
why?
les boulez bomber - January 2, 2012
You ask me this every, single day. I'm tired of answering it. If you consistently start using capitalization then I'll consider answering again
Parks Smith - January 2, 2012
i get the feeling from shanahan's pressers
that he is not inclined to trade up…he keeps talking about “how we need a good draft” this year…which makes me think we’ll stand pat…so if no QB falls to us at 6th i think we’re tacking WR or O line
atark001 - January 1, 2012
I feel the same way, he's being using the word "depthy" A LOT lately.
Parks Smith - January 1, 2012
exactly
which i honestly think is the right thing for the team, although probably unpopular in the short term
atark001 - January 1, 2012
yep
I could see him trading down again
Redskin44 - January 1, 2012
I think you are hearing us posture. It is too early to know if we would the cost to move up will be. But IND threw out three first rounders is what it will take- which is not surprising since it is their job to get as much as possible. But most people outside IND commenting on the matter are dismissing it as the too high- which is also not surprising.
Peyton is due $28 million before the draft which makes it very expensive to keep him and pry a top 2 QB prospect away from IND.
les boulez bomber - January 2, 2012
why do you feel so?
i think it is LIKELY they go QB if the top two are available. He did not win one division game in two season- that’s a big deal and looks even worse when every division team had a QB that led them to the playoffs this year. After two years as a starter, they still won only 5 games. And perhaps worse of all, he nearly got his coaches fired following the concussion incident and has not even seen the practice field since.
If they dont trade up, and they are perfectly positioned to do so with three top 36 picks in this draft (#4, mid twenties, and 36), I would expect them to nab Tannehill with their second 1st rounder.
les boulez bomber - January 2, 2012
are we picking 7TH
where is jacksonville, shouldnt they be ahead of us?
the fantasy king - January 1, 2012
Why would they picking ahead of us? We have the easier SOS.
Parks Smith - January 1, 2012
ooops
i thought jacksonville only had 4 wins,i satand corrected!
the fantasy king - January 1, 2012
Pretty good story about how kyle fires up the team
http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2012/01/01/kyle-shanahan-calls-his-shot-for-2012/
Sorry posting from phone so I can’t make it clicky…
mbedner - January 1, 2012 via mobile
I think
that Matt Flynn just made himself millions in a game that didn’t matter today. I could see a QB-hungry team signing him, taking them out of the race in the draft for Robert Griffin III. I could see Cleveland or Seattle signing him for way more than he’s worth, ignoring that he played a poor Lions secondary, and has more weapons than anyone else in the NFL. Mark my words, Matt Flynn will be overpaid, and it better not be by the Washington Redskins.
ripST - January 1, 2012
By the way
my second post on HH ever is this one.
ripST - January 1, 2012
PASSIVE VOICE!!!!
8vechkin - January 1, 2012
QB Flynn looked awesome... It would free our 1st rd pick.... WR Blackmon? OT Reiff? Tradeback for more picks?
1x1an - January 1, 2012
pack sat 5 started on offense and 2 on D
lions was fighting for the 5th seed.. now they have to play the saints with the lose…. ouch!
munson21502 - January 1, 2012
Pro Bowler!
Parks Smith - January 1, 2012
Lions pass defense is pretty good since they have one of the best pass rushes in the league
Steve Shoup - January 1, 2012
Flynn sure did have a hell of a day today. And perhaps the value of three years of work under Aaron Rodgers outweighs the risk of signing a guy with two career starts. Give him some cash, free up that pick, we could all have a happy 2012.
Danny Burrito - January 1, 2012
my only worry about flynn is the sample size
is he a matt schaub type or a rob johnson…i’ll leave that to the evaluators to figure out though
atark001 - January 1, 2012
there is no guarantee
but next years QB draft class could be deeper than this year’s pending on who comes out. If Flynn flops we can make a move for a QB next year
Redskin44 - January 1, 2012
With Barkley staying, if Landry Jones stays... then next year's class will be deeper
1x1an - January 1, 2012
Jones will just dumb down that class
Parks Smith - January 1, 2012
ha ha... can't wait to see those wonderlic scores....
1x1an - January 1, 2012
i was thinking that as well
next year’s draft sound deep at QB if they all come out…i think we might be best served to sure up our o-line and WR positions (along with depth at other positions)
atark001 - January 1, 2012
Every year is supposed to be the deepest QB class.
iH8dallas - January 1, 2012 via mobile
no, not true
Redskin44 - January 1, 2012
short memory
Mr. E - January 2, 2012
Flynn has started two games... No thanks
elfenwish - January 1, 2012
Were the PAckers supposed to sit Aaron Rogers so Flynn could get more gametime?
Any QB… any… sitting behind Rogers… would have ONLY 2 games under their belt
1x1an - January 1, 2012
or Matt Cassel...
parlaying playing on a great team into a huge contract, and then doing Just O.K. for the new team.
jgibbsfan1 - January 1, 2012
he did go to the Pro Bowl
Parks Smith - January 1, 2012
kevin kolb?
les boulez bomber - January 2, 2012
+ 1
I said the same thing about Kevin kolb
mr.snyderhireme - January 1, 2012 via mobile
or us
les boulez bomber - January 2, 2012
Luck, RGIII will be gone by 6
So I think Flynn in FA or Foles in the second will be the rout the Skins take. Hope it works out, but if history has anything to say about it, the dark days will continue.
brettpedigo - January 1, 2012
i agree but don't rec it....
the “dark days” portion scares the shit out of me
TheUberest - January 1, 2012
huh? why would history be against bringing in a former backup QB?
Yes there are failures, but quite a few successes as well.
Steve Shoup - January 1, 2012
I think we'll trade up if necessary to get Luck or RG3
It was really too bad Cleveland didn’t beat Pitt. Is Cleveland likely to stick with McCoy?
Donnio1234 - January 1, 2012
no he is a backup for them going forward minus any transitional starts he gets
les boulez bomber - January 2, 2012
Skins have too many holes
Too many holes to be trading up for one man. I don’t care if it is a QB.
It better be one sweet deal in order for me to agree with that one. I don’t want to sacrifice two good players in order to get one. Maybe it’s just me.. but that’s how I feel.
williamhudsonlink - January 2, 2012
Who is RGIII definitely going too before the Redskins pick at 6?
Copious 1 - January 1, 2012
Because all the talking heads say he will ??
I think that’s a great question & IMHO the odds would be less than 50/50 that he is gone by the time that we draft
ENsDad27 - January 1, 2012
Many said Gabbert wouldn't fall to us... and he did... perhaps RG3 will be there too
1x1an - January 1, 2012
There were reports that started on draft day saying rival executives would be shocked if the Skins didn't trade up to draft Gabbart.
We saw how wrong that rumor was, as well as many other rumors concerning the draft.
Believe nothing, especially so far away from the draft. When it comes to Shanny, don’t believe anything, ever.
Horcasitas4 - January 1, 2012
Here is just an example
Horcasitas4 - January 1, 2012
If that's true......
Then they sure had the right 2 qbs in mind
mr.snyderhireme - January 1, 2012 via mobile
Which would bode well for us this year.
Shanny seems to have a real knack for RBs… and he hasn’t been bad with his drafting of QBs, either (Cutler, for example, is an decent enough QB, even if he’s dumb as
Terry Bradshawa rock). If Shanny identified the right guys last year, and he does it again, we can easily enough go with one of the other options.BillWard - January 1, 2012
Cutler is a great QB.
Just look at the Bears with him and without him. I’d love for him to be our QB; and he did go to Vanderbilt, so he’s not dumb.
Horcasitas4 - January 2, 2012
I think they make those calls and have those discussions as part of the due dilligence process. expect the same this year. at least i hope they do.
les boulez bomber - January 2, 2012
Baseball reporter from the Houston paper, awesome source
Parks Smith - January 2, 2012
huh? John McClain is the Texans beat writer and a great NFL insider
my guess is it is due to his dedication around the holidays
Steve Shoup - January 2, 2012
It was just one example.
Shefter and Mort are also unreliable, as are most if not all sources. Heck, even if it comes from the GM’s mouth, it shouldn’t be trusted.
Horcasitas4 - January 2, 2012
If RGIII is not there, I hope this is what they do.
DirkQc - January 1, 2012
Well the good news is, QB is far from the Brown's biggest need.
Question is though, if RG3 is on the board when they pick, do they pass up? I think they’d go like last year and trade down. If that is the case, then its a question of who is willing to jump above the skins for RG3.
With the play of Matt Moore in Miami, do they really need to trade away picks to jump up for RG3?
The Jags wont give up on Gabbert after 1 year, and won’t trade up for a QB 2 years in a row.
Bills gave Fitzpatrick an extension, hard to see them trading up.
Chiefs? They have Orton and Cassel. Possible that they trade up, but they may just go with one of those guys.
Cards can’t afford to give up on Koln after one year (or they’ll stick with Skelton)
Seahawks maybe. Would take them a lot to move up though, And you have to admire what Jackson was able to do through injury there.
Am I missing anyone?
UkRedskin - January 1, 2012
interesting
i’ve been thinking lately that all this talk of trading up might just be for not…something tells me that teams may sit pat…unlike last year, where the draft came before free agency and the outlook of the league was shadowed by the CBA dilemma, i’m not so sure last years reaching for QBs is an indicator of the future or just an aberration?
atark001 - January 1, 2012
yes
after the lose tonite i think jerry jones makes a big move and trades up for rg3. tony has had a good team and alot pick them to make deep playoff runs each year.and their star players aint getting any younger well their rookie wr and rb look scarey.
munson21502 - January 1, 2012
Omg
I was thinking the cowboys too….. Or the eagles…. They have the picks to offer if they wanted to move up
mr.snyderhireme - January 1, 2012 via mobile
There is an out clause in the contract before next season
Parks Smith - January 1, 2012
Oh, I didn't know about that.
That might make things interesting. They were high on Newton last year according to reports.
On a separate note, Tony Dungy just said that don’t presume Colts will take Luck, but RG3. Interesting thing is that would make more sense if they kept Manning. You could argue RG3 would benefit from a year or two under Manning and learning a pro-style offense/taking snaps from under center etc.
UkRedskin - January 1, 2012
If that is thats case
then the colts FO is terrible.
Redskin44 - January 1, 2012
Luck is #1. Dont believe any reports contrary
les boulez bomber - January 2, 2012
do you think he played poor enough to be dropped?
i dont. their biggest problems are all on defense
les boulez bomber - January 2, 2012
rg3 will be a big jersey seller next year
i cant see the browns passing on him. im even thinking he wont even make it to the browns. not sure how he could… since he seems to be a better qb verision of vick. for us im leaning towards get flynn and draft a later round qb try to trade back or just get the best player of postion of need with the 6th pick.
munson21502 - January 1, 2012
Yea people will be running to get doo doo brown colored RG3 jerseys
Do you really think Mike Holmgren is going to make a decision based on jersey sales? I’ve yet to see anyone walking around in a Cam Newton jersey
Parks Smith - January 1, 2012
You aren't looking hard enough...
Richmond and Farmville are not exactly NFL hotbeds…
But no, I don’t think Holmgren is planning on drafting by sales potential…
DavidDunn - January 1, 2012
The concentration of those sales must be insane.
Of those, I’ve only ever seen Vick, Austin and Brady. I guess it doesn’t matter where it sells, as long as it sells.
Horcasitas4 - January 2, 2012
Really?
I see Polamalu jerseys everywhere.
williamhudsonlink - January 2, 2012
Nope.
I assume if I lived in D.C. or northern Maryland I would see many of those jerseys, though.
Horcasitas4 - January 2, 2012
he had barely played by sep 30. he will be higher than 16 next year
les boulez bomber - January 2, 2012
I think they give Colt McCoy another year... if it doesn't work... they'll go for Barkley next year.
Browns have too many needs… and McCoy is not terrible
1x1an - January 1, 2012
Would make sense, especially with the projected crop next year
Parks Smith - January 1, 2012
time for you to make a choice, Parks.
Is next year a very deep draft class, or isn’t it? I’ve seen you suggest both, depending on what you were arguing at the time. Pick one.
TheDeepBall - January 1, 2012
No it's not time for me to make a choice.
I don’t know who the hell is going to be in next year’s class. This year’s class was deep a couple weeks ago, now…not so much. There is not telling who will and won’t commit next year. So I’m not going to sit here and spew about how awesome Aaron Murray is.
Parks Smith - January 2, 2012
the concussion killed his career in CLE
les boulez bomber - January 2, 2012
no team can assume they'll have a certain pick the following season
or that whenever they do decide to address qb, they’ll have several quality choices available. If they like Griffin and he’s there they’d take him imo
DCrez - January 1, 2012
Browns have 2 1st rd picks they can address their needs with other picks
would you keep McCoy and pass on an opportunity for Griffin?
Redskin44 - January 1, 2012
Sure, if you're Mike Holmgren
Parks Smith - January 1, 2012
nope
Redskin44 - January 1, 2012
good discussion
Parks Smith - January 1, 2012
always is with you
Redskin44 - January 1, 2012
see to me having that extra 2nd makes it more likely that Cleveland goes QB
b/c they have that other pick to grab another big need at G/RB/WR/OLB
Steve Shoup - January 1, 2012
agreed
Redskin44 - January 1, 2012
what does that mean?
les boulez bomber - January 2, 2012
McCoy is pretty bad, doubt they would pass on Griffin
DCrez - January 1, 2012
Miami will certainly try to move up....
Moore is not the answer in their opinion…the question is how much are they willing to pay
DavidDunn - January 1, 2012
they finished strong.
les boulez bomber - January 2, 2012
won't matter
they already decided to move away from Moore….at least that is what they were leaking..
DavidDunn - January 2, 2012
I can't even talk about this anymore.
Happy New Year everyone. Let’s hope that 2012 is better than 2011 for the Skins.
Whomever the QB is, I hope they win us a title. Griffin, Flynn, (insert name)…
Let’s wait until FA, then the draft, then preseason then games. HTTR!
iH8dallas - January 1, 2012 via mobile
happy new years to you as well
this loss blew too…was oh to similar to the jets game for my liking
i agree with you that we have to wait for free agency to unfold (and then each successive phase), but speculating is fun, just ask the 49ers (the gold miners not the football team)
atark001 - January 1, 2012
quik some one press Fast forward button!!
munson21502 - January 1, 2012
We are the team in best position for RG3
However, we gotta watch for the trade ups. I’m happy with our position though. Gives us a real shot.
BigOLinemen - January 1, 2012
Forget getting RG3, he won't be there. Someone will make a trade to get in top 5.
Rams, Vikings, Tampa all will put the pick up for bid.
pfhokie - January 1, 2012
+1
Redskin44 - January 1, 2012
Yea...
The Rams will not let the USC OT get away… Just like, the Vikings will not let the best cover corner get away. All eyes will be on Browns & hope they pick a RB, the Bucs pick a CB or WR(even if they need help everywhere), Also, hope M.F go to Miami or Seattle considering they have a better supporting cast than another QB needing teams, unless he goes for the money.
LA11 - January 1, 2012
Matt Moore may have earned another year
and seattle seems to keep trying with crappy FA qbs so im not sure they are draft competitors, the Browns will move down if possible
alwaysremember21 - January 1, 2012
Tavaris Jackson actually has looked pretty solid the last couple of weeks.
Never thought I’d say that.
Parks Smith - January 1, 2012
Neither did Jackson, I dont think he is a starting caliber qb but they may stick with him
alwaysremember21 - January 1, 2012
i thought the same thing the other day; not that i would trade for him or anything.....
TheUberest - January 1, 2012
Im hoping rg3 falls to us
not so we can draft him but so we can leverage him for a trade down. An offer of picks for our pick. Work the magic mike.
davetrembling - January 1, 2012
That's dumb
If RG 3 is as good as promoted…. Then you draft him, all the picks we could get for him won’t even come close to the same value of a star qb…. You gotta know when too buy and when to sell kiddo
mr.snyderhireme - January 1, 2012 via mobile
Dumb?
thats the thing kiddo. you can’t fall for the hype. And we have MULTIPLE needs. Shall we be a colts clone if this said star happens to get injured. Id rather solidify my entire team.
davetrembling - January 2, 2012
rg3 entered the draft to be a redskin..
if he is still there when we pick. im 101% sure we draft him
munson21502 - January 1, 2012
Um what?
DCO'sfan - January 1, 2012
???
What?
donniethelion - January 1, 2012
yea i wish that too
TheUberest - January 1, 2012
So what kind of haul would trading down from the #6 pick with RG3 still on the board bring?
And how pissed would the majority of Redskins fans be if it happened?
HogHunter - January 1, 2012
If we bring in Matt Flynn... and get the kind of trade that Julio Jones brought to the Browns (5 picks: 1st 2nd 4th last year, 1st 4th this)... we'll be OK
1x1an - January 1, 2012
I think we might even get a little more than that
Redskin44 - January 2, 2012
we aint that lucky....
first of all there isnt too many guys that will be left by the time we pick that will be worth that type of deal. and the falcons only did it because they thought it would push them over the top. they figured that their first this year would be a late 1st round pick. so if we do get a trade offer that is the kinda team that will offer us. maybe blackmon falls to us and the ravens want that WR to help them get over the hump? all i know is i hate this waiting game us fans are stuck in lol
munson21502 - January 2, 2012
and he has been a home run super star the past four or so games- worth every penny. matt bryant needs to improve more now
les boulez bomber - January 2, 2012
I don't foresee any situation in which Robert Griffin falls into our laps.
Maybe, MAYBE bring in Flynn… still undecided on that front, and draft a second round QB. Worst case scenario, Flynn sucks. Yeah, that’s the worst case scenario.
DCO'sfan - January 1, 2012
Agree
If the Browns don’t take him, I think we will see miami, hawks, or chiefs make a move to trade up
Redskin44 - January 1, 2012
Also
Reports just came that Griffin has not actually made his decision about the draft. Things are still up in the air.
DCO'sfan - January 1, 2012
Baylor assistant AD said that this morning
Parks Smith - January 1, 2012
Yeah, and so did Griffin himself
Decision should come by January 10th.
DCO'sfan - January 1, 2012
he is very likely to come out
he won the heisman
had a great game that locks top ten, probably top 5
baylor is not playing for anything next year
les boulez bomber - January 2, 2012
if he stays its because of the olympics and not football related
les boulez bomber - January 2, 2012
His dad already said it's not a hard decision for him to come out
They are just waiting to make it official until they meet with the 5 agents they are talking to. He said sometime next week they will make that decision and then sit down with the Baylor coaches and administration to make it official. He’s going to the NFL. It’s a lock.
tmarine17 - January 2, 2012
I cannot believe
Anyone is even thinking about signing a QB like Flynn as the answer? Two starts in a 4 year NFL career? Have we learned nothing?
elfenwish - January 1, 2012
seriously
but teams make that same mistake time and time again
DCrez - January 1, 2012
I can't believe we went in with Rex.
I also can’t believe I was dumb enough to think Beck could play.
At least Flynn looked good in his action.
iH8dallas - January 1, 2012 via mobile
So did Beck in limited preseason action too, according to you. He was AWESOME!
Parks Smith - January 1, 2012
And in the same post I said it was dumb of me.
Are you just drinking watermelon flavored vodka and trolling my comments tonight?
iH8dallas - January 1, 2012 via mobile
yep
Parks Smith - January 1, 2012
enjoy the offseason
EagleEyes - January 2, 2012
Flynn looks better than Beck in every way but hes going to bring in a Kolb type deal
Hes fools gold
alwaysremember21 - January 1, 2012
Limited starts doesn’t always parlay to failure. See Matt Schaub. Two career starts before signing with Houston as a starter, and for the most part has been solid there.
Danny Burrito - January 1, 2012
Schaub was 10,000 times better prospect coming out of college than Flynn
Parks Smith - January 1, 2012
That means nothing...
Considering Beck was a better prospect also.
LA11 - January 1, 2012
and Schuab was a better prospect than Brady
Redskin44 - January 2, 2012
what's up with the Darrell Green stuff on twitter?
Sounds like he wants to coach in some capacity for the Skins.
iH8dallas - January 1, 2012 via mobile
Can we get him on the field he still runs 4.47
alwaysremember21 - January 1, 2012
in his 50's? impressive...
We DO need help in the secondary… and he IS a Hall of Fame CB…
1x1an - January 1, 2012
i beat darrel green in a race after i smoked like 100 other kids at a fan day
it was the first year norv turner was our coach i think. i think he let me beat him but the other race was funny. out of 100 young kids 14 to 17 90 of them just stopped as i took off. the others were 20 yards back when i crossed the line.and my shoe fell off when i took off lol.
munson21502 - January 1, 2012
I bet he didn't let you win
I guess i’ll be the first to tell you you run in the 4.3 forty range. You should do something with that.
64ShagginWagon - January 1, 2012
well its a little late for that. that was when i was 16
more then 15 years ago lol.i wasted a god given gift thats for sure.all i ever did was win a few bets from racing dogs, scooters and people on bikes… and ran down some boys kite on a windy night on the beach after it blew out of his hands.
munson21502 - January 2, 2012
ouch! yeah that was fast
les boulez bomber - January 2, 2012
here we go...
TheUberest - January 1, 2012
Question of the day: What makes Flynn better than Tannehill, Cousins, Weeden, Foles, Moore, etc.?
Parks Smith - January 1, 2012
Nothing
Absolutely nothing. But he doesn’t cost draft picks. That’s the only reason I would consider signing him over those guys.
DCO'sfan - January 1, 2012
But he does cost considerably more money than a draft pick
Parks Smith - January 1, 2012
That's true
And that’s my issue. I don’t think there is a win-win here. But I don’t want to give up the farm for RGIII when I could have a capable—which in my opinion, is all we can say about Matt Flynn at this point—QB and have a less developed prospect learn from him.
DCO'sfan - January 1, 2012
why would we give up the farm?
if we draft him, we draft him….no need to trade up for em’ tho IMO
TheUberest - January 1, 2012
actually i just addressed this in the Flynn blog
but there isn’t as big of a difference. A QB like Griffin (assuming the 5th year gets picked up) will make over $32 million guaranteed. Flynn won’t get more than $22-25 million guaranteed (and that would be over 6 or 7 years). Yes there is other money involved, but if he doesn’t work out it won’t be too hard to get out of.
Steve Shoup - January 1, 2012
Man this is fun, 4 months of this bickering haha
Can’t wait until we get to people’s post on how we need DJax and VJax
Parks Smith - January 1, 2012
cosign
and unfortunately that’s bound to happen….
TheUberest - January 1, 2012
Suprised it hasn't yet.
You’ll see waves
1) QB talk
2) Blame for this season
1) Shanny
2) little Shanny
3) Snyder
4) Danny Smith
3) Crazy FA talk
4) Reasonable draft talk
Parks Smith - January 1, 2012
We need to fire the owner!
I mean, COME ON! He can’t cover, he can’t get us a Superbowl, he’s charging outrageous prices for a subpar experience.
FIRE DANNY BOY!
(Did that just blow forward through the offseason so we can get to the reasonable draft talk?)
BillWard - January 1, 2012
winning cures all
les boulez bomber - January 2, 2012
Yeah, months and months of guessing, bickering
rating QBs, mock drafts, etc. And nobody will know what Shanahan is thinking, and Shanahan will totally ignore anything written on HH. But a really fun offseason – more fun than these last two seasons have been.
Donnio1234 - January 1, 2012
I dont think Flynn vs RG3 is the right comparison. RG3 wins that one hands down. I think you consider signing Flynn vs one of the second or lower tier prospects
les boulez bomber - January 2, 2012
the pick is an asset as well
money is money but you can use the pick for a player of another position rather than investing the money and losing the pick.
davetrembling - January 2, 2012
he also is more proven and a lot has more experience that a draft prospect
les boulez bomber - January 2, 2012
he just threw for 500 yards and 6 tds in an NFL game against a playoff team playing to win
probably the wrong day to knock him
les boulez bomber - January 2, 2012
I think my dream situation would be to sign Flynn and draft Tannehill or someone like that
I think I’d even prefer that to RG3
Parks Smith - January 1, 2012
That would be my ideal scenario as well.
I think in the end Flynn will be nothing more than a stopgap. But also, who’s saying that won’t happen? It very well might.
DCO'sfan - January 1, 2012
the best part of this scenario is
the ability to trade back and acquire more picks cause we all know we need as many picks as possible
J.D.45 - January 1, 2012
Actually, I think we need a top QB more than we need a bunch of picks
There have been so many pleasant surprises that we are in pretty good shape in previous areas of need, like O-line, RB, WR, D-line, LB, etc. We desperately need a top QB, but beyond that they may just want to improve at safety (because of Landry’s health), O-line, WR, maybe ILB. It seems to me that Shanahan should do whatever it takes to get Luck or RG3 (unless he actually likes one of the others, like Jones, Tannehill, Foles, or Weeden just as much).
Donnio1234 - January 1, 2012
really?
Flynn and Tannehill over RG3? why? (just curious honestly)
TheUberest - January 1, 2012
I think RG3 is a fine player, and can be a great pro. However, I think his value is over-inflated and isn't a great fit here.
Parks Smith - January 1, 2012
i don't know about the over-inflated value part but...
i do think that his chances of succeeding in DC are slim if he were to be drafted here, but i don’t think it’s because of a lack of skill, i think shannahan wont tailor the system to fit the kid.
it’s kind of sad because wherever he goes that’s exactly what he’ll need to be successful in the NFL…a system suited for his skill-set.
TheUberest - January 1, 2012
I completely agree with you and that's what I've been arguing all along.
If RG3 is put in a situation similar to Newton, where they cater the whole offense to him then he’ll succeed. If not, then I think he’ll flounder.
Parks Smith - January 1, 2012
What does Rex do that Griffin or any other qb can't?
Seems to me there is disconnect between fans notion that we run some kind of highly complex system that is too much for a rookie and the fact that every week rex is out there throwing 2 picks and just generally chucking the ball wherever he wants and that seems to be our system. Most of this offense is throw to a spot on your first read, it’s not like Rex is getting to his 4th progression to make plays.
DCrez - January 1, 2012
he's just too sexy :-)
1x1an - January 1, 2012
This drives me crazy.
The Shanny system is not brain surgery. You throw a football to an open player on your team (not Rex’s strength), it’s not hard.
He’s the worst starting QB in the NFL, except for maybe Gabbert. Flynn or Griffin would make an immediate positive impact.
iH8dallas - January 1, 2012 via mobile
Exactly
That system stuff is starting to get on my nerves. When I hear that stuff, I envision Rex Grossman pulling Shanny’s play book outta the desk drawer like King Arthur pulling Excalibur outta the rock.
CJHutch - January 1, 2012
And didn't Kyle himself say they would tailor to the talent of the players?
Just because they have been fairly rigid SO FAR doesn’t mean that they won’t tailor to talent as they can. The issue is getting guys that can work in a close variant of the system they want to run, and getting folks to understand what they need to do.
Then, with the guys that are even close, you adapt to their strengths, and offset for their weaknesses. It’s called COACHING.
We just didn’t have the QB that was worth adapting the offense to.
BillWard - January 1, 2012
+10
DavidDunn - January 1, 2012
that's b/c he doesn't have the time to make anything more than the 1st read
Steve Shoup - January 1, 2012
that wont change no matter who the qb is
i just see a huge disconnect between the notion Shanny is running a complex system vs what we actually see on Sunday. I’d swear half the plays are zone reads, and like Dunn said the offense is predicated on the Shanny run game- it’s not some hyper-complex passing attack that only Matt Barkley or Andrew Luck could possibly understand as rookies
DCrez - January 2, 2012
I agree it isn't too complex but there is a huge jump in general from college to the NFL, which is why so few rookie QB's can succeed
a lot of the issues are just reading defenses, knowing when to get rid of the ball etc.
Steve Shoup - January 2, 2012
thats because when they justified the mcnabb trade they said we need an experienced proven vet to handle the system and now that we are clearly in the grab a qb mode they are saying you dont have to be experienced in the system to succeed in the first year
les boulez bomber - January 2, 2012
That's what I was trying to do compare RG3 to Rex, thanks for that
Parks Smith - January 2, 2012
Why isn't he a good fit here?
Isn’t this offense predicated on play action and movement out of the pocket, and a good deep ball?
I haven’t seen him a ton, but I thought that is what people liked about him?
That being said, I saw him in the bowl game and he looked mega antsy in the pocket…
DavidDunn - January 1, 2012
Where did I say he isn't a good fit here?
Parks Smith - January 2, 2012
Short memory.
“I think RG3 is a fine player, and can be a great pro. However, I think his value is over-inflated and isn’t a great fit here. " -Parks Smith
Reedskin - January 2, 2012
thank you
DavidDunn - January 2, 2012
I like that as well, I'm not sure why you got on my case for wanting Flynn.
iH8dallas - January 1, 2012 via mobile
Re-read, I got on your case b/c of WHY you wanted Flynn
Parks Smith - January 1, 2012
OHHHHH.
Well, that’s a perfectly sane and reasonable thing to do.
iH8dallas - January 1, 2012 via mobile
Where do you think Tannehill will go? Late 1st? Early 2nd?
davesomethin - January 1, 2012 via mobile
I think late 1st
Steve Shoup - January 1, 2012
If he has a good combine... late 1st
1x1an - January 1, 2012
So we would have to trade back from our 1st… This will be an Interesting draft to say the least.
davesomethin - January 2, 2012 via mobile
yep
I think trading back is a smart play
Steve Shoup - January 2, 2012
I completely agree
I had mentioned it before to you Parks that I think Flynn has talent and would be our best bet for the next few years.
Rex would be a fine backup and we could draft a QB in waiting next year.
It would give us the option to follow last year’s pattern and restock the roster with depth.
dlucero7 - January 2, 2012 via mobile
He did throw for 480 yards and 6TDs in an NFL game, breaking records for one of the oldest NFL teams.
So he’s got that going for him.
iH8dallas - January 1, 2012 via mobile
Flynn plays for the Cardinals?
Parks Smith - January 1, 2012
haha thought you said oldest, my bad
Parks Smith - January 1, 2012
Besides the fact he plays the same system and have seen he can handle being an NFL QB.
NOTHING.
LA11 - January 1, 2012
football outsider
doug farrar really likes rg3. says has the highest potential of all the qbs. also said tannehill reminds him of a more athletic charlie whitehurst. huge drop off from luck/rg3 and jones/tannehill…
Meraj Chowdhury - January 1, 2012
sacrilege for anyone to question Luck as the best qb
but that’s what we’re going to see leading up to the draft. Griffin has such a live, accurate arm there’s just not much to criticize unlike most mobile qb’s.
DCrez - January 1, 2012
if we
don’t trade up to get the top 2 qbs, i’d rather trade down and fortify depth…i hope cleveland is intrigued by the potential of getting flynn
Meraj Chowdhury - January 1, 2012
Last week I said I'd rather have RG3 than Luck... they almost ran me out of here!
I meant that for the asking price for Luck (couple of 1sts and 2nds), I’d rather have RG3 (perhaps move up 2 positions and give up a 2nd)
1x1an - January 1, 2012
i really respect
the opinions of those who currently or past worked at football outsiders and saying that rg3 has the greatest potential of all qbs (not to mention more ready to play from day 1 then most people think)…is huge. Also, the other thing the worried me was that they said there is a tremendous drop off in the next set of qbs. Being the third year of the shannhan rebuilding process, they need a high ceiling qb to develop as the franchise signal caller.
Meraj Chowdhury - January 2, 2012
RG3 is too good for us to get, most likely
that completely meaningless Giants win come back to bite us in the ass, as they head into the postseason. Damn shame Browns didnt pull it out today!
DCrez - January 2, 2012
too bad he'll go to the browns and get crushed by physical nfc north defenses
davetrembling - January 2, 2012
Just tonight, on the Giant game broadcast, Tony Dungy said that as of now
he would take RG3 over Luck. He didn’t really say why, but I got the impression that he thought that he was better suited to the current NFL – which I took to mean that RG3 might be a better runner. Tony is one sharp dude, so when he talks, I listen.
Donnio1234 - January 2, 2012
my problem with the wait til next year plan
although i am not keen on the idea of trading any hi picks like weve been notorious for doing , im less keen on the idea of not moving up to snag rgIII while hes there for the taking. reason being that theres too many variables between this april and next april. if we pass on a qb this year (and if its not luck or rgIII we SHOULD pass on a qb) then we are basically saying we are going all in for barkley next year. unless somebody sees another qb in college right now who is ready to step in from day one and be our franchise qb in 13. while i certainly wouldnt mind barkley being our qb, he’s a top 5 pick next year barring a disastrous senior season and although with rex at the controlls we always have a shot at being the worst in the league, i see us being exactly where we are this year at the end of 12, 5-11/6-10 and somewhere in the lower end of the top 10 draft picks. at that point we would probably have to trade even MORE to get him. basically we would just be setting ourselves an additional year back for a qb whos only advantage over rgIII is he runs a pro style offense at usc (which cam newton showed can be easily adjusted too with enough talent and hard work) im just saying. id rather see it happen now.
_QB1_ - January 1, 2012
My problem with waiting until next year is that...
I don’t want to suck next year.
iH8dallas - January 1, 2012 via mobile
Not to mention he rookie year of a QB is not the year in which you can win a Super Bowl
Horcasitas4 - January 1, 2012
I got news for you
We have JUST as much chance at winning a Superbowl next year with a rookie QB as we do with Rex Grossman.
CJHutch - January 2, 2012
We are talking about in two years.
Next year, I want to have a rookie(RGIII) so we can be ready to compete by 2013-14. Next year would also be much better with him than Grossman, both in excitement and the win column.
Horcasitas4 - January 2, 2012
Guess I misread
Your statement. I thought you were implying that we shouldn’t draft a QB because we won’t win a Superbowl next year with one.
CJHutch - January 2, 2012
No big deal.
Honestly, unless Rodgers or Brees and their receivers magically change teams to the Skins, we aren’t going to win the Superbowl next year.
Horcasitas4 - January 2, 2012
Flynn made all the throws today
And he won’t cost us a draft pick. Flynn + keeping our first round draft pick to use on another position > using the first round draft pick to roll the dice on RGIII, or worse trading away multiple 1st round picks to go after luck. I like the fact that we’d be bringing in a guy who threw for the all-time Green Bay single game passing record. There aren’t many QBs in the league with the ability to put together a game like Flynn did today, and I’m fine with going with him as the starter for at least a couple years while we surround him with young talent through the draft.
Kurtstack - January 1, 2012
Now starts 4 months of what ifs...
Keep the picks. We can go after a FA QB AND draft Tannehill/Weeden/Foles- maybe a move back in the 2nd round to get more picks.
A FA QB just costs money. We have plenty of that, our salary cap is in good shape, and we don’t have Vinny the Moron handling the deal. If we go that route, I doubt we overpay like we have in the past.
I’m not sure who I like best of the Tannehill/Weeden/Foles group, but I do think the best one will be every bit as good as Andy Dalton.

Our QB coach seems utterly ineffective.

1x1an - January 1, 2012
Yep
Donnio1234 - January 2, 2012
Revised Plan
FA – Flynn and Nicks (just to satisfy my inner-Cerrato),plus some quality unheralded guys, like Bowen this year, hopefully including a CB and an ILB.
Draft – trade back in the 1st. Pick Tannehill late in the 1st (don’t think he lasts to the 2nd), then retool the lines.
Stephen Beagrie - January 2, 2012
I could live with that
we would probably have at least 5 (maybe 6) picks in rounds 2-4 which would be huge in helping rebuild OL, WR, and CB. mybe grab a S or ILB along the way
Redskin44 - January 2, 2012
Agreed
Maybe it’s Flynn or Tannehill/Weeden/Foles or both. We don’t need the best QB in the league; we need a smart, efficient QB that can run the offense and isn’t a turnover machine.
So keep the picks and improve the roster. More depth and competition makes the team better. The cure for preventing bonehead plays (like Moss and Stallworth yesterday) or bonehead behavior (Davis and Williams) is having players on your roster that can step in and play who won’t commit bonehead plays/smoke weed/etc etc.
tjkinva - January 2, 2012

Too bad beating us twice couldn’t stop you Foreskins from being anything relevant in the league aside from ppl saying “how the hell did they beat the GIANTS twice???” you guys will be the bottom dwellers of this division for the next decade as well as this last one.
