Redskins O-line needs improvement but is no longer a disaster - Rich Tandler's Real Redskins
By Rich Tandler A lot of folks out there are concerned about the Redskins drafting a quarterback—or getting a new QB by any other means, for that matter—because they say the Redskins offensive line is in shambles. Some people need to take a look at the numbers. No, the line this year is a far cry from the ’91 Hogs but they also are considerably better than the 2009 group that provided defenses with only token resistance. Let’s look at...
Washington Redskins: Shanahan Should Be Around For Awhile |
We are entering the 2011-2012 NFL post season and a slew of coaching changes are inevitable. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ Raheem Morris is no longer head coach of that team nor is Steve Spagnuolo head coach of the St. Louis Rams. Mike Martz is no longer the offensive coordinator of the Chicago Bears ...
Shanahan Expects 'Pretty Active' Offseason
The Redskins were among the more active teams in last year’s NFL Draft, acquiring 12 picks. And when free agency finally opened in late July, they were equally aggressive in signing several players who emerged as starters.

I don't understand why the NFL wouldn't let scouts go if the underclassmen had already declared?
This game won’t draw hardly any big names though.
Parks Smith - January 10, 2012
maybe from a policy standpoint
the NFL is trying to not encourage underclassman from leaving school early, sorta like a nod to the NCAA? (although if that was really the case they could just not allow juniors to enter the draft)…but yea, doesn’t really make sense if they’ve already declared and are now ineligible to return to school
atark001 - January 10, 2012
I might be wrong but
I thought they could go back to school as long as they haven’t hired an agent. I didn’t think just declaring voided their eligibility.
Jeff Bernard - January 10, 2012
oh you might be right
I believe that’s the way they do it in the NBA, i’m not sure about the NFL though
atark001 - January 10, 2012
I think that is just the NBA
Parks Smith - January 10, 2012
Then maybe we can do better than Selvish Capers in the late rounds
les boulez bomber - January 10, 2012
I agree, makes no sense if they already declared.
HTTR4LIFE - January 10, 2012
I expect an active offseason as well.
Trade up for Griffin. Sign free agents galore. Give us what we want!!!!
iH8dallas - January 10, 2012
We are not taking RG3 with either a trade up or a pick at #6
Get over this so when we don’t get him you don’t have to come on here and be sad when he goes to another team.
Jeff Bernard - January 10, 2012
OH REALLY?
Did your psychic tell you that? Are you best friends with Bruce Allen? How do you know?
You don’t. So there.
iH8dallas - January 10, 2012
I actually am best friends with Bruce Allen
We play Words with Friends all the time.
Jeff Bernard - January 10, 2012
Well then, my mistake.
iH8dallas - January 10, 2012
So, who did Bruce say the QB would be in 2012?
iH8dallas - January 10, 2012
He spelled TannehillFoles on a triple word tile
StephanHart - January 10, 2012
Tim Tebow
Jeff Bernard - January 10, 2012
You should challenge him in Family Feud with Friends too
StephanHart - January 10, 2012
O good the early Snyder years model. YAY!
Parks Smith - January 10, 2012
I'm looking forward to Steve spazzing out about Rich Tandler's article.
iH8dallas - January 10, 2012
What Tandler is suggesting is that we shouldn't let the play of our OL dictate whether or not we draft a QB.
In my opinion our OL has more questions then answers..
1. LT- TW – dude failed 11 drug tests since August
2. LG- Kory- Will he be healthy, will they resign him?
3. C- Monty- Average at best, no depth behind him
4. RG- Chester- Average at best
5. RT- Brown- he’s gotta go , 2 injury plaqued yrs and below average play. Willie is good for depth but we need a starting RT
I
Diesel44 - January 10, 2012
That would be a pretty decent line if we added a starting LG, C, RG and RT
Jeff Bernard - January 10, 2012
Replace Brown with Smith, sign Grubbs, draft another guard that can play center and light a cigar.
iH8dallas - January 10, 2012
Haha I love how everyone assumes we are signing Grubbs, like it's a done deal that he's playing Guard for us next year
StephanHart - January 10, 2012
And that Dwayne Bowe is our starting receiver.
iH8dallas - January 10, 2012
Exactly
Which is why im not in favor of trading up. Say we trade up and then expect to fill our myriad of holes with FAs….and then few to none of the FAs we target become available or sign with us….then what?
StephanHart - January 10, 2012
Then we (gasp), play the guys we drafted.
I know this is a crazy idea but maybe we start Hankerson, Austin, Robinson, Smith, Helu…I know, I know it’s insane. But just imagine a world where we don’t sign ridiculous free agents.
iH8dallas - January 10, 2012
But if you trade away your top draft picks for RG3, you have to get players from FA to fill those holes....
StephanHart - January 10, 2012
If we trade up we are simply switching draft spots.
We lose (at most) a first next year, a second this year and a fifth rounder or something.
No big deal. People make it out to be a biblical judgement day to trade up.
That’s 3 PLAYERS.
iH8dallas - January 10, 2012
As I have stated, if it is that cheap to trade up, then its viable. I just that's an underestimation of what it will cost
StephanHart - January 10, 2012
No it's not. That's probably exactly what it will cost.
iH8dallas - January 10, 2012
If not cheaper.
iH8dallas - January 10, 2012
Well if you're right you're right, but I don't see how you come to that conclusion
Luck is locked up with the #1 pick, essentially making RG3 the only available top prospect QB.
And you think he is going to come cheaply? Especially when you’re main argument is that Franchise QB’s are such a premium in the league and that, when you have the chance to get one, you do all you can to trade up?
With 1 top prospect QB available, wouldn’t the cost for him be high? And wouldn’t the market drive his price up even higher?
StephanHart - January 10, 2012
It depends on the perceived difference between him and the next tier
les boulez bomber - January 10, 2012
I think there is a BIG perceived difference
StephanHart - January 10, 2012
i think that's a good estimation based on the fact that we have the 6th overall pick, which is relatively high
but on the other hand, if a team with a later pick wants to move up they’ll be offering more in return, which could, in turn, force us to offer more…really all depends on how many teams are vying for that pick
atark001 - January 10, 2012
Ok, let's play NFL GMs real quick.
Teams that need a QB: WAS, CLE, MIA, SEA.
Two of these teams are taking a FA QB before the draft, be it Flynn, Campbell or Orton in any combination.
There are two left now.
One of these remaining teams is licking their chops thinking about Tannehill or Foles falling in their lap.
There will not be many calls going to St. Louis.
Griffin will come fairly cheap.
iH8dallas - January 10, 2012
good point about the free agent QBs
which teams pick up which free agent QBs will directly affect the draft
I was also thinking that our 6th pick might play to our advantage in the sense that say the Rams have their eye on one of the top tier players in the draft…having the 6th pick as compared to the 16th or the 26th pick would enable them to trade back while still getting the player they were targeting to begin with
atark001 - January 10, 2012
Exactly. They get the same player at a lower price.
We’re essentially giving them a 10% coupon.
iH8dallas - January 10, 2012
I hope you are right about the free agents filling 2 teams qb needs…
davesomethin - January 10, 2012 via mobile
I don't think any trade up in draft position would occur prior to free agency
deals like that seem to get done closer to draft day, and I think teams would be hesitant to make a trade before free agency for that very reason that they might not be able to fill other positions of need via free agency
atark001 - January 10, 2012
those pieces on the offensive line were interesting
didn’t know kory was a restricted free agent, that should work out well for us, tender him the one year deal and see if he’s capable after his injury (i still think we should go after a guard in free agency, ben grubbs seems to have the size for the zone scheme)…i think if we can solidify the RT position and keep everyone healthy (also need better depth), our offensive line should be decent e nough
atark001 - January 10, 2012
I thought the o-line was good last year.
Especially considering they had a three-toed sloth at QB.
iH8dallas - January 10, 2012
hahah
yea, and if we didn’t have that erik cook at center fiasco the stat line could have been marginally better for the o-line…i thought they really jelled later in the year, we just need consistency on that line, especially with a zone blocking scheme, everybody has to be in tune with one another…you can replace one guy without missing much, but when you’re reshuffling the whole line it messes up the chemistry
atark001 - January 10, 2012
I don't know about everyone else, but I thought the O-line was great blocking for our field goal unit.
No need to upgrade there.
ThuGodfather - January 10, 2012
those were 100% on the kicker
He should have kicked the ball directly from the snap before it even reached the holders hands.
Al_CaPWNED - January 10, 2012
hahaha
i just had a mental picture of that playing out (hilarity ensued)
