According to Rick Stroud of the St. Pete's Time the Redskins have hired former Tampa Bay Buccaneers' head coach Raheem Morris to coach the team's secondary. Morris is coming off his third season as the Bucs head coach and was in the running to be the defensive coordinator for the Vikings. Morris' contract can be voided if he is offered a coordinator job elsewhere in the future.
Also, Jason Reid of the Washington Post is reporting Redskins head coach, Mike Shanahan has sent two coaches packing tonight in Ashburn. Wide Receiver coach Keenan McCardell and safeties coach Steve Jackson have been let go. Defensive Coordinator, Jim Haslett has been vocal about change in the defensive secondary and it seems as if Jackson is a casualty of that change. Jackson has been with the Redskins since 2004, while McCardell was a more recent addition when he retired from playing in 2010.

CptChaosSidekick - January 11, 2012
He'll be coaching our secondary
CptChaosSidekick - January 11, 2012
?
Bullet Nation in Exile - January 13, 2012
Glad that we finally got rid of Steve Jackson but I'm surprised we fired McCardell
I thought our receivers played really well this season considering our QB’s and the young wr’s seemingly were developing
Draco - January 11, 2012
agreed
Steve Shoup - January 11, 2012
Perhaps Shannahan and McCardell just didn't get along
Draco - January 11, 2012
i guess, i'm hoping Shanny brings in someone new and not another one of his retreads for the spot
Steve Shoup - January 11, 2012
what about Henry Ellard?
He just left NY Jets…
jgibbsfan1 - January 11, 2012
a former redskins too ha
atark001 - January 11, 2012
I would love to bring him in
Steve Shoup - January 11, 2012
I like that idea!
HTTR4LIFE - January 11, 2012
Perhaps McCardell just simply failed miserably in his 1st ever coaching job.
WRs regreesed and the youngsters didn’t develop. Simply as that,,
Diesel44 - January 12, 2012
Parks beat me to it.
Was just typing up this story along with the Morris announcement.
UkRedskin - January 11, 2012
Why don't you type up your story anyway?
horatius - January 12, 2012
It will be superior reading thats for sure.
willismagillacutty - January 13, 2012
Aaaaand the sportsmanship award goes to...
Bullet Nation in Exile - January 13, 2012
jackson i get
Mccardell I don’ty
Redskin44 - January 11, 2012 via mobile
Very disappointed about the McCardell firing
I thought he had a lot of potential as a position coach, and considering what he’s had to work with the last two year’s I think he deserves an A+.
Steve Shoup - January 11, 2012
Yea but at the same time the receivers that have looked good are the savy veterans.
Parks Smith - January 11, 2012
like Anthony Armstrong in 2010?
seriously though, when in two years all you have to work with are Moss, Armstrong, Galloway, Roydell Williams, Austin, Banks, Gaffney, Stallworth, Anderson, Hankerson and Paul i’d say it is a pretty decent job.
Our receivers might not have been great, but it was what we were working with. I could understand if we had made a big WR push via FA or draft and they didn’t perform.
Maybe they are blaming Hanks slow development on him, but overall I liked what I saw out of Hank (and that was with the Beckster throwing him most of those passes) and think he would have been nice down the stretch.
I’ll be real interested to hear the reasons why, and the replacement.
Steve Shoup - January 11, 2012
I agree, its hard for me to comment on it really. I don't know to properly judge a WR coach.
He did have a short offseason with the rooks this year. But I really thought Brandon Banks had Megatron potential and he was never able to tap into it
Parks Smith - January 11, 2012
haha exactly
to me this WR corps exceeded expectations. Only way McCardell deserved to be fired is if he was campaigning for his former teammate Vincent Jackson to be the Redskins top priority in free agency.
Steve Shoup - January 11, 2012
Somehow the QB coach survives, haha
Parks Smith - January 11, 2012
that dude is young as hell too
but seems like kyle’s best friend from the texans ha
atark001 - January 11, 2012
Yea I noticed that also
Parks Smith - January 11, 2012
But do they have matching tattoos?
iH8dallas - January 11, 2012 via mobile
the other reason is if McCardell was Davis' source
Steve Shoup - January 11, 2012
ouch thats cold haha
alwaysremember21 - January 11, 2012
haha i just can't figured out why they'd let him go
Steve Shoup - January 11, 2012
LaFlauer has been terrible Imo
Case In point: mcnabb… And John beck… And Rex grossman
mbedner - January 11, 2012
Is he terrible, or are they terrible?
Copious 1 - January 11, 2012
Had LaFleur not been the QB coach, John beck would be in the pro bowl right now
FACT
mbedner - January 11, 2012
well, to be fairy
look what HE had to work with. Then again, who knows, a different QB coach and John Beck coulda been ……
CJHutch - January 12, 2012 via mobile
You're a fairy?
Parks Smith - January 12, 2012
Haha
I think my phone is mad at me, because I left it at work yesterday. And of course YOU are the one to pick up on it.
CJHutch - January 12, 2012
the coaches seemed to indicate
that more than a few of the interceptions were due to some WRs doing the wrong thing…perhaps that’s an implication of his coaching ability?
atark001 - January 11, 2012
+1
Our receivers have made strides he knows what he’s doing. Kind of shocked to be honest.
TerpsAllTheWay - January 11, 2012 via mobile
Is anybody else excited that we have some news?
I think Raheem will make a difference in the secondary.
Raheem the Dream, get rid of Reed the Cream.
iH8dallas - January 11, 2012 via mobile
I'm glad he's here, I like his energy and relationship with his players...
I’m hoping this strengthens my Dre Kirkpatrick prediction! Haslett requested secondary changes, and they seem to be taking shape.
Parks Smith - January 11, 2012
agree
his relationship/teaching abilities will help us a lot…the young guys will love him, I remember ronde barber commenting about how good of a coach he was back when he was their secondary coach..i wonder when they say he’s been hired to coach secondary if that has any implication on slowick too, or just an ambiguous term used for his position as safety coach?
atark001 - January 11, 2012
That's not happening.
If we sign Matt Flynn then I could buy it, but the offense needs so much it just doesn’t make sense.
iH8dallas - January 11, 2012 via mobile
More like Aqib Talib if cut by the Bucs.
LA11 - January 12, 2012
Absolutely not...
Parks Smith - January 12, 2012
brandon banks vouched for his character
alwaysremember21 - January 12, 2012
only because Talib threatened to stab him again...
Bullet Nation in Exile - January 13, 2012
I'm hoping
He can teach our secondary how to tackle.
CJHutch - January 12, 2012 via mobile
Ladies and gentlemen, we have Shanny's sucessor.
In 3 years of course.
horatius - January 12, 2012
Our young WRs are not developing and cant get on the field. Sure Hank got action but he was a a top.college talent and it took mid year for Hank.to.play.
Kevin Ewoldt - January 11, 2012
i agree, i think our young WRs were too slow to develop for shanahan's liking
atark001 - January 11, 2012
That's what I'm thinking, like I said its the vets that have excelled
Parks Smith - January 11, 2012
and armstrong and austin seemed to regress
atark001 - January 11, 2012
Austin was awesome preseason then it was like he didn't exist any more, it as strange
Parks Smith - January 11, 2012
yea i had high hopes for him, thought he could be a great slot option for us
atark001 - January 11, 2012
Feel like he wasn't targeted as much?
Or I’m just making excuses?
travisjh86 - January 13, 2012
Did McCardell have any say in player evaluation?
Draft and Preseason. We did keep a ton of WRs, and they could be holding him accountable
DavidDunn - January 11, 2012
typically they can argue for a player
but the HC and OC and DC are going to figure out roster construction. Given the fact that Shanny was either related or worked with the majority of the other offensive coaches I’d guess that McCardell wouldn’t have the pull to keep a Stallworth over another lineman or something like that.
Steve Shoup - January 11, 2012
yeah but that happens all around the league each year
so what it took him 6 weeks in a year without a camp. If he played the rest of the way and maintained his yards per game average (which was arguably down due to Beck) he would have ranked 4th among rookie WR’s.
Steve Shoup - January 11, 2012
Doughty, Barnes, Gomes
last year Macho Harris…
Not much to work with…but as I asked about McCardell, maybe Jackson was one of the people pushing for Otagwe and Wilson, and this is part of leadership holding them accountable…
DavidDunn - January 11, 2012
OJ was haslett's guy from the rams
and I think Wilson was playing good ball by the end of the year…i think jackson’s problem was the lack of development of the younger players, and it also seemed that our safeties would continually make the same mistakes, which reflects on his coaching I believe…but this is pure speculation on my part
atark001 - January 11, 2012
Jackson was just the safeties coach, remember
Parks Smith - January 11, 2012
yea, sorry this was in response to daviddunn's post
i just forgot to reply correctly, ha
atark001 - January 11, 2012
agreed i thought Wilson was by far our best Defensive back
and agree also that Atogwe was Haslett’s guy.
Steve Shoup - January 11, 2012
Bob SLowik is still the DBs coach…whats going on with him?
Kevin Ewoldt - January 11, 2012
He lives in my neighborhood
His wife is still around and I don’t see them packing up to leave yet, so I would assume he’s not going anywhere. Plus, he’s one of Shanahan’s boys, so I doubt he will be fired. I think he was the d coordinator in denver with shanahan for a couple of those years.
tmarine17 - January 12, 2012
Hey Parks....
Does this quench you argument against RGIII being a fit? (Serious question, not a “gotcha” moment)
http://www.hogshaven.com/2012/1/11/2700311/lets-dispell-this-now
Copious 1 - January 11, 2012
Please give it up... it's just my opinion and this isn't relevant to the post.
No, Shanahan saying media savvy things and referencing ancient HOF QBs does not quench my argument. I read that last week, it’s just Shanny being Shanny. I could be completely wrong about Shanny’s view on RG3, we’ll find out in April. Until then let it rest.
Parks Smith - January 11, 2012
Just asked a question dude.
I know you have been at it with some folks on the blog as recently as today, but it was merely out of curiosity. Don’t get sensitive on my now….it’s a long off season. Cheers
Copious 1 - January 11, 2012
*me
Copious 1 - January 11, 2012
This would be an excellent time to pull a Yo' Mamma insult on Parks.
horatius - January 12, 2012
Sorry didn't mean to convey in that context, I know you weren't trying to bust my chops.
You’re one of the few that can have a logical/fair conversation
Parks Smith - January 11, 2012
You don’t think the play calling at least is different from QB to QB?
travisjh86 - January 13, 2012
I think he will help the secondary very much
Nice pick up
The Red End - January 11, 2012
Would have been nice to get the Saints WR coach before he took the Tulane job.
Copious 1 - January 11, 2012
Could be
a number of reasons why they fired McCardell. Maybe they think he’s part of the reason for Hankerson’s slow develpoment, maybe he doesn’t evaluate game tape well, maybe his breath stinks. Who knows? He’s a receivers coach, who cares. Name another receiver’s coach without googling it.
As for his body of work the only WR that stepped up was Gaffney, all the other’s regressed, Moss and Armstrong ecspecially. Hankerson just impressed because Mikyle Shanahan actually put him in the game and made it a point in the gameplan to get him the ball.
Skinner99 - January 11, 2012
Name another receivers coach without googling it: Henry Ellard
Nailed it!
mbedner - January 11, 2012
Disappointed in McCardell being let go
However, it WOULD be nice to have Henry Ellard come in as his replacement.
The Agent C 83 - January 11, 2012
Finally a secondary coach who will stop holding Reed Doughty from reaching his potential.
Jeff Bernard - January 11, 2012
Hahahaha
mbedner - January 11, 2012
Hahaha +1
StephanHart - January 12, 2012
Still doesn't change the fact D.Hall needs to go.
But i do hope they stop the notion of making each corner stay on one side of the field and give the WR an island to work with before being covered by one of the leprechaun CB the skins have.
LA11 - January 12, 2012
good points, but I think that's on Haslett.
MagicHat - January 12, 2012
Darell Green has stated he wanted to be a defensive coach in some capacity
That would be pretty cool to be honest. not only was he the skins first real shut down corner he is in good enough shape to strap on the pads and show em how its done. haha
Venthril - January 12, 2012
wow...
didn’t see this comment, i posted similar…..great minds
ptowny - January 12, 2012
change is always good
now with a new defensive coach i would keep LANDRY
Little 1 - January 12, 2012
How does hiring a new secondary coach affect our decision to keep or not keep LaRon?
StephanHart - January 12, 2012
I was moving for a couple of days
Did I miss the anouncement that Danny Smith got fired or did he survive another round of firings? If so I have to hand it to the guy. He’s like a cockroach in a nuclear storm.
64ShagginWagon - January 12, 2012
Danny ain't going anywhere
unless he decides he wants to leave. Shanahan loves him.
tmarine17 - January 12, 2012
Like this Move
We get a young coach who has been to the top and who should be hungry to fight his way back to a head coaching job in the NFL
StephanHart - January 12, 2012
If Darrell Green wants to coach...
let’s bring him in as a WR coach…he can show them how to get over on a CB haha
ptowny - January 12, 2012
That's who I wanted to coach the secondary
But I’m pretty happy with Morris. I thought he had a good relationship with players but they did straight give up on him this past season
This just makes me believe even more that Kyle is going to be our new head coach in a few years
travisjh86 - January 13, 2012
Coaching Staff
The Shanahans need to fire themselves!!!!!
