Would Brett Favre or simply an average NFL starting QB benefited the Redskins in 2011?
Many believe the Redskins "Achilles' heal" in 2011 was poor quarterback play. It's obviously sparked many discussion on the 2012 starting quarterback will be. Will he come from free agency? college? arena league? These questions can't be answered right now, but what if we reflect on what would have happened if the Redskins would have found another option beyond Rex Gross and John Beck in 2011. Earlier this week SB Nation contributor John Bois did a piece on Brett Favre, Warren Moon, Dan Marino, and John Elway in the twilight of their careers. Bois focused on Brett Favre and came up with a projected 2011 QB Rating of 82.8 for the "Mississippi Wrangler", and used his statistics to see how quarterback needy teams could have potentially benefited from Favre's services in 2011.
Points scored: 288
Passer rating, across all quarterbacks used: 73.3
Points-to-passer-rating ratio: 3.92
Projected points scored with Favre as quarterback, using above ratio: 325I should probably note that neither John Beck nor Rex Grossman were complete disasters at quarterback. They were just "kind of bad," and statistically, neither was more or less "kind of bad" than the other.
Our projected 2011 Brett Favre gives the Redskins 37 more points to spread out over the course of the season.

Bois goes on to predict that a quarterback of Favre's caliber wouldn't have been enough to win the division, but it would have certainly been enough to compete in the NFC East. His predicted finish with Favre was 7-9 for the Skins. With Favre's projected stats, he would have finished the season in the dead middle of pack, in terms of quarterbacks, with a QB rating number comparable to Matt Hasslebeck, Cam Newton, Kevin Kolb, and Joe Flacco. So what can we take from this going into 2012? It seems as if in a year with a weak schedule and weak division that the Skins would have still finished with a losing record. Next year the opponents will certainly be tougher, so does this type of data point to the Redskins needing a truly elite quarterback to even dream of reaching the playoffs?

iH8dallas - January 12, 2012
Thanks for reading and your contribution, haha
Parks Smith - January 12, 2012
I read the entire thing. Thus my reaction.
But it beats RG3 trade up talk.
iH8dallas - January 12, 2012
No, because we’d be drafting in the middle of the 1st round, and we would be hindered in our attempt to draft a guy like Blackmon. I’m kind of glad our QBs sucked haha…if anything, they didn’t suck enough!
OvechkinGR8 - January 12, 2012
Would the Redskins *Have Succeeded
And while I don’t necessarily accept the validity of Bois’ argument (he’s paid to be a Nutty Professor), there’s no getting around the fact that the Redskins needed to play mistake-free football and hope the QB didn’t give the game away. With a good QB we would still need mistake free ball to make the playoffs (which doesn’t happen). With a truly elite quarterback…well, look at the Colts.
But that said, Helu and especially Royster didn’t start to emerge until the latter half of the season. Factor in the instability of the O-line, and barring a good, to very good QB, we don’t make the playoffs this past season. Going forward, with solid drafting, we won’t need an elite QB to make the playoffs…to win a SB, though? Another story…
Bullet Nation in Exile - January 12, 2012
That's the problem
2011 Favre would not have been an “elite” quarterback. Frankly ,I’m not sure if he would’ve been much better than Grossman. Not even sure if he would’ve thrown less picks.

KenPat - January 12, 2012
Agreed.
And P.S. I hate Brett Favre…conscience-less gunslinger…too bad he wasn’t a combo guard in the NBA…that would have been fun to watch…
Bullet Nation in Exile - January 12, 2012
He is....he goes by the name of Jordan Crawford!
Copious 1 - January 12, 2012
Or Andray Blatche at the elbow
Who know what goes through his mind. Always says he wants to go in the post more, but every time he gets the ball at the elbow its like his thought is “F’ It I’m Here…BAAALLLLLIN” followed by a loud “CLANK” coming from the bakcboard
Parks Smith - January 12, 2012
He's bad, but Crawford is MUCH WORSE!
I yell at the TV every time he jacks up a shot. He’s like the John Beck of the Wizards, you just want him to be better than he is, but he isn’t, so then you just pray that he can at least be competent and he can’t do that well either. And then to top it all off….Blatche has never indicated that he is better than Michael Jordan, at least his medication is stronger than Crawfords. #SMH

I'm almost willing to give Vinny Cerrato a shot at running the Wiz instead of Grunfield

His method of management might actually work in the NBA. Give up draft picks for guys who are thought yo be past their prime? Kinda like the Celtics did for Ray Allen and KG.

Bullet Nation in Exile - January 12, 2012
Vinny would have traded away our 2010 1st rounder

Bullet Nation in Exile - January 12, 2012
haha, I play a lot of 2K12 and seeing Foye come off the Clippers bench alwasy burns me
Parks Smith - January 12, 2012
This is interesting I love how players on the other washington teams even team captain starters can be crapped on
but say one negative thing about a redskin like Gaffney, Hightower, or Cooley who are all very much flawed and you are a huge troll and recieve massive amounts of criticism
alwaysremember21 - January 12, 2012
There's a lot less forgiveness for guys who play both ways
and are constantly exposed and exploited by opposing teams…
Bullet Nation in Exile - January 13, 2012
Watching 3/5 of our "championship" core

Bullet Nation in Exile - January 13, 2012
So you're a fan
Of Jordan Crawford?
CJHutch - January 12, 2012
I think more of Gilbert Arenas than Jordan Crawford
And re: Jordan…he has “moxie” right? All-Star.
Bullet Nation in Exile - January 12, 2012
he does have moxie
Unfortunately, he doesn’t have much else at the moment. Apparently his shot (and Wall’s, AND Young’s) didn’t get the memo that the lockout was over.
CJHutch - January 13, 2012 via mobile
I diagree
I said this before and I will say it again. Based on the way this year ended up, if all else was the same, we would have at least contended, if not taken, the division with a slightly above average QB which I don’t consider 2011 Rex or 2010 Favre to be.
Bryan Black - January 12, 2012 via Android app
So...
You’re arguing the semantic difference between good and slightly above average?
Bullet Nation in Exile - January 13, 2012
Let me make it clearer then
Rex is a bad QB, 2010 Favre wasn’t much better. Tavaris Jackson is probably my definition of average. If we had an Alex Smith type QB we are probably on the playoffs right now. Less turnovers, I think he finished with 10 total where Rex had over 25. I think you are smart enough to discern the difference between good and average
Bryan Black - January 13, 2012 via Android app
No in fact i think it proves more to the fact that you need to build up an entire team
Steve Shoup - January 12, 2012
Would have won 2 more games
with Favre and finished 7-9, and he would retire…again, and we would be having discussions about who the next redskin QB should be…again
Redskin44 - January 12, 2012

Worse draft position and still no long term solution at QB.
SCSkin21 - January 12, 2012
Yes, but we could have had....
Favres backups backup to be our franchise QB as someone else suggested and then we could fire Shanahan because Favre retired,McDonald’s changed their dollar menu and Obama lost his car keys
Bryan Black - January 12, 2012 via Android app
Well they certainly don’t have much of a chance next year with the “kind of bad” (mediocre is a better term) QB play. Just another reason to not even bring back Grossman at all.
Skins must take their best option to get to GOOD QB play as soon as possible. Maybe it won’t be next year if they get a guy like Griffin, but at least he has a legit chance to reach the GOOD level and beyond.
HogtieJim - January 12, 2012

I don't think thats a bad thing
Now if Favre was his #1 Best QB of all time…there would be some serious dispute

you would gladly accept that crap
if he put up a season in washington like he did his first year in minny. And if he threw in a superbowl ring like he did previously in green bay you would be there on the 50 yd line eating your 6 dollar hotdog and drinking your 8 dollar beer while wearing your favre jersey.
davetrembling - January 12, 2012
he just my favorite qb
he’s not the greatest of all time. I lost my dad around the same time he did and the way he played that game made him my fav
taylor21 - January 13, 2012
Hmmm. Where are the Packers and Patriots now with the worst defenses in the NFL?
The 1 seed in both conferences. A franchise Quarterback has you playing this weekend and a sucky QB has you discussing your QB options for next year.
jmpalomo - January 12, 2012 via Android app
I didn’t realize the Packers finished with the 32nd ranked D. Man….they need DHall.
Kevin Ewoldt - January 12, 2012
Only the worst in yards allowed.
In the stats that matter (points allowed and turnovers forced) they are much better.
The Packers are 19th in points allowed and 1st in turnovers forced. The Patriots are 15th in points allowed and 3rd in turnovers forced.
Only highly ignorant people use yards allowed as a gauge for defensive strength.
TheDeepBall - January 12, 2012
Its the metric that makes the redskins look best generally
alwaysremember21 - January 12, 2012
You also have to factor in the fact NE and GB score like 35 points a game so teams will be playing from behind which equals more yards. Wish we had that problem....
dwninit71 - January 12, 2012
Oh I forgot, you want us to have a sucky quarterback
Stats dont lie. A great Quarterback hides many sins (See 2011 colts without Peyton)
jmpalomo - January 12, 2012 via Android app
Protection is key too though...
I definitely watched a couple Patriots and Packers games, and especially so with the Patriots, I was surprised how much time Brady had to throw. The dude is almost immobile. Certainly his quick release still can help deal with pressure, but there were a lot of times he didn’t have to worry about it.
Rodgers’ pass protection was certainly shakier at times, and more could be said for his general mobility to get out of danger, but with all the long balls he threw you knew it had to take time to develop.
I hadn’t done any film study or anything, but between Grossman’s long-ball being a good 5 yards shallow and the lack of time for the play to develop, I’m pretty sure that’s a major factor that Armstrong had such a drop-off from last year.

im 95% sure
if we had a good qb last year we woulda went 6-0 with the way the other nfc east teams were playing early in the year. then the injury bug hit us. and i think the other qb woulda helped us win at least 4 more after that. which woulda been good to win the nfc east this year…
munson21502 - January 12, 2012
thanks for the laugh
TheDeepBall - January 12, 2012
your welcome
sad thing is its true. we were the worst in the nfl in the give away take way stat. which almost any coach will tell if you lose that your not gonna win. we were lucky to get 5 wins. thats why i think we are better then our record this year. now next year our schedule will be a little harder and the rest of the nfc east should be better. so if we get a good qb we should be right at 8-8 to 10-6 the year after we should be able to start mking some deep playoff runs if we can stay healthy
munson21502 - January 12, 2012
Just hang on a second
I know, I know… almost everyone here is going to have a complete meltdown if we don’t get a top 10 quarterback.
But look at this article and notice how many times the Redskins scored 35 points or more consistently without a top 10 quarterback… at some point, you have to emit it has a lot to do with the team as a whole. Brady would not be Tom terrific without the patriots.
A new quarterback is not going to fix the offense by himself

Wow 1998, that seems relevant
Parks Smith - January 12, 2012
I know that many here think that the NFL only began in the year 2000
But truthfully, 20 years is not that long ago, the game has not changed that much.
Besides, I was signing with you… a quarterback is not going to fix the offense this year or last without some help.
You look at it from his point of view–we sent the last decade or so looking for a quarterback to no avail; why not take the "build it, and they will come" approach?
I know it was a long time ago, but it worked well enough for us to win three super Bowls with three forgettable quarterbacks.
I think you would be hard-pressed to prove that this isn’t the case for some of today’s elite quarterbacks-they may not turn out as well if they had stepped into the pile of crap that is our offense.
Try to keep an open mind…

Re:quaterback
Please try to get someone who you can train and prepare to take over, we need a quaterback bad. Cut the three we have in camp, and try to trade for the #1 pick or get RG111 coming out of Baylor. Sign Green bay backup quaterback or go after Brett Favre, he’s better at his age than what we got in camp now. We need a quaterback and wide receivers, and just add a pass rusher on defense. Please get an offensive coordinator and get rid of son or either father, but one has to go.
joejr1971 - January 13, 2012
This is the stupidest thing I have ever heard...
