For the second year in a row the New Orleans Saints season ended on the west coast. Last year they were eliminated in the playoffs by the Seahawks and this year they fell victim to the 49ers? But where does the team go from here and could the Redskins potentially benefit from the Saints failing to get to the top of the mountain for the second year in a row?
Drew Brees: Brees is a free agent and the chances of him leaving New Orleans is .000000000001%, but we've seen crazier things happen. Maybe Brees is a big believer in the Mayans and wants to finish his life playing in the most powerful city in the world? Like I said, not happening, but why not stir the pot a little and take a stab at it? Keep an eye on Redskin-1.
Gregg Williams: Rumor is that Williams will follow his old pal Jeff Fisher to the Rams. So where does this leave the Saints and more importantly could this sway some of their impending free agents? Shaun Rogers and Aubrayo Franklin are both, once again, free agents. Could the Skins feel a need to beef up the nose tackle rotation and add some depth? Also if the Skins are looking to add some depth in the defensive backfield perhaps 25 year old Tracy Porter could be a good fit in DC?

Marques Colston: The Saints are going to have to break the bank for Brees, so could that open up the Redskins to grab his top target? Six year NFL veteran and Hofstra product Marques Colston will hit the open market this year. When healthy Colston is a matchup nightmare for defensive backs. He would be a tremendous asset to the Skins and the redzone target we have been looking for for years.
Robert Meachem: Meachem is a 6'2 target that could also help out the Skins. The former first rounder is 27 years old and has averaged 660 yards and nearly seven touchdowns per year over the past three seasons.
Carl Nicks: It's pretty rare that a 26 year old, all-pro guard would hit the open market, but it could happen this year with four year veteran Carl Nicks. Nicks would be a huge upgrade and would likely have to accept a hometown discount to stay in New Orleans, due to the money they doled out to keep Jahri Evans. Nicks would be a HUGE pickup for the Skins.

Colston...as it takes a year for a receiver to usually get
a rhythm in a new system, and would a nice core for the rebuild with differing skill sets…exactly what you need….Colston, Gaffney, Hankerson, Moss…all slight different…
it also removes the need to spend a high draft pick on WR which is a bit trickier than other positions…

would be a nice core..
DavidDunn - January 15, 2012
Look at the Colts: Is Colston a great Wide Receiver because of Brees or despite of Brees
Too many examples in the past where supposedly great Wide Receivers left a great Quarterback and pretty much was average or sucked.
jmpalomo - January 15, 2012
We need a number one...there aren't many other potential big 1s out
there (Bowe if he isn’t franchised). But there is no reason to assume his skill set won’t translate. Could he digress from he career years…sure. But there is not really a reason to believe he won’t be a legit one. Also, I am assuming the Redskins won’t be playing a bum at QB.
We need to stop assuming the worst at every corner. A high draft pick can also not pan out. Plenty of examples right here in DC (Westbrook, Howard, Thomas, Kelly).
We can’t make perfect the enemy of the good.
DavidDunn - January 15, 2012
That being said...the price would need to be right due to injury history...
DavidDunn - January 15, 2012
Yea look at the Colts (worst example ever)
Garcon: Career year in yardage and touchdowns, (950, 6)
Wayne: Still almost 1,000 yards
Parks Smith - January 15, 2012
1000 yards= 65 yards a game
The most over rated stat.
My bad. Wayne didnt even reach a 1000 yards.
jmpalomo - January 15, 2012 via Android app
65 ypg would put you in the Top 20 WRs in the league, that's not impressive with Curtis Painter?
Maybe that’s why I said:
Parks Smith - January 15, 2012
Carl Nicks
Would be my top free agent aquisiton. He’s just too dominant to not throw a bunch of money at him. Especially with the dregs we have on our interior line.

^^^what he said^^^

^^^what they said^^^
Reedskin - January 15, 2012
We could use 3 starters on the offensive line so i will go with Nicks
Jeff Bernard - January 15, 2012
All of the NO WR's are a product
of Brees and their offense IMO…plus Colston has a history of injury. Without lookup, I want to say that he hasn’t finished 3 of his seasons. Nicks would be the only one I would go for. Brees isn’t leaving so “Nicks” that idea!
Bryan Black - January 15, 2012 via Android app
He's missed two games the past three years
Parks Smith - January 15, 2012
Talking total career
Possibly he’s dedicated himself to training more the last 3 than early on or he’s just not as unlucky as he was early on. If we bring him in it means we probably ignore that area in the draft so we are back to square one again only with an older Moss and Gaffney, if he were to go down. I would prefer to draft a WR than sign Colston

and Hankerson, Paul, Austin

Dree Brees is an Unrestricted Free Agent. He has little kids and will most likely want to play for his last contract at a place he does not have to move again.
Drew Brees is from Texas. Where is his wife from? He played college in the State of Indiana.
Where would they like to raise their kids who are about ready to start school?
What team is willing to offer him the biggest contract? (Do not discount the almighty dollar).
And if you say New Orleans is a great place to raise your kids you will be making me laugh.
DREW BREES IS ON THE MOVE.
jmpalomo - January 15, 2012
And there is ZERO chance that in that case the Saints wouldn't Franchise Brees.
Brees is staying in NO.
I’d love to have him here…. but it’s not happening.
BillWard - January 15, 2012
But he has little kids! The only player in the whole Saints organization with little kids!
Parks Smith - January 15, 2012
The only significant player with kids
jmpalomo - January 15, 2012 via Android app
You know every Saints' players situation with kids? Kind of creepy...
Parks Smith - January 15, 2012
Bangs head on wall.
iH8dallas - January 15, 2012 via mobile
Stay away from Meachum. Never reached his potential with Brees
How much worse would he be with an average quarterback?
jmpalomo - January 15, 2012
Meachem is good because Brees is throwing to him.
Notice how mediocre forwards put up nice points when they have Steve Nash or Jason Kidd as point guard? Same thing here.
iH8dallas - January 15, 2012 via mobile
Free Agents
If they want to win they’ll go elsewhere, if they want a big paycheck they’ll come here. Sad but true. Until we start winning football games, we are only going to attract the “show me the money” free agents.
Kurtstack - January 15, 2012
Name me a few players in their prime that went somewhere for less money

Holmes did this year, it happens all the time

Free Agents
Can we get Carl Nicks, Marcus Colston and Matt Flynn? That plus another decent draft would be great!!!
Clyde Niblack - January 15, 2012
Yes. And I hear that Jesus’ contract with Tim Tebow just expired so maybe we could add him too.
8vechkin - January 15, 2012
Actually that can happen since we are 30 million under the salary cap. So bring on Tebow too..
xxrdotxx - January 15, 2012
Carl Nicks
then get a new QB and draft a RT and C in the 2nd and 3rd rounds.
TheDeepBall - January 15, 2012
^^^What he said times a million.
AinAkron - January 15, 2012
how any answer besides Nicks is astounding to me...
as much complaints out there about our OL, you’ve got THE BEST OG available, it is a no brainer…..
Our only concern will be the franchise tag, if they sign Brees soon, they can lock him in, keeping him from signing with someone else. (I’m not sure their salary cap can withstand a franchise tag, we shall see.)
jgibbsfan1 - January 15, 2012
Price would have to be right on Colston and I doubt it would be. Pursuit of Nicks might tell us the level of confidence in Kory’s return. Tackle or center seems to be a more pressing need to me than guard if Kory can come back and there is only so much cap with the huge QB upgrade also required.
Neither Colston or Nicks would do a damn thing to making the Redskins consistently successful with Grossman behind the wheel.
HogtieJim - January 15, 2012
you must not be watching NFL football...
Nicks could single-handedly redesign our OL, providing Kory as experienced backup / depth.
If we draft our QB, the salary cap hit is much more minimized, now with the CBA agreements for rookies salaries.
Finally, Nicks would have a profound effect on our pursuit of consistent success.
jgibbsfan1 - January 15, 2012
I'm just sick of losing
Nicks would be a huge upgrade at right guard and we could o after Grubbs from the Ravens to play left guard. If we do this, we could use Chester as a backup. Now all we need is a center and a versatile tackle.
