Could B.J. Cunningham be a good fit for the Skins in the mid-rounds of the draft?

The East-West Shrine game does not boast a hot bed of talent this year at the wide receiver position, but there are some prospects worth noting. It's very clear that the Redskins need some talent at the position, but where they get that talent remains a mystery. Last year, the Redskins drafted some size (Leonard Hankerson and Niles Paul), and some speed (Aldrick Robinson). Hankerson and Paul both saw time, while Robinson remained a developmental prospect. If the Redskins look to the later rounds of the 2012 NFL draft, they could find a potential diamond in the rough to compete with our current wide receivers.

B.J. Cunningham: 6' 1" 209 Michigan St. - Cunningham is a big, physical receiver in the mold of former MSU star Devin Thomas. He is at his best when asked to beat the jam at the line of scrimmage, and go over the middle for the tough catch. He will not burn you with his straight line speed, but he does possess quickness in and out of his breaks, and the ability to gain yards after the catch. Early reports from St. Petersburg have been mixed, with Cunningham making a spectacular catch on a play, then getting beaten out for a ball by a smaller corner on another. He is one prospect who could have a lot to gain or lose in practices this week.

Projected Draft Round - 4-6

Star-divide

Jarius Wright: 5' 10" 176 Arkansas - Wright is arguably the most noticeable name amongst all the receiver prospects in St. Petersburg this week. He was the favorite target of Tyler Wilson, catching 66 passes, for 1117 yards and 12 touchdowns as a senior. wright has put his speed on display in Florida, with reports of him easily being the fastest player on the field. He is said to have good ability getting in and out of breaks, and gaining separation. The one knock on him is his slender frame, especially in his lower body. It will be interesting to see how he does working from the slot this week in practice against bigger, more physical corners.

It was reported the Redskins staff had one-on-one interviews with Wright already this week.

Projected Draft Round - 3-4

Devon Wylie: 5' 9" 182 Fresno State - Wylie led all Fresno State receivers with 56 receptions, for 716 yards and one TD. He caught the attention of Scouts Monday with a solid practice against a weak west secondary. He showed no fear going up against bigger corners and safeties, and won some key one-on-one battles, This weeks practice is huge for a prospect like Wylie, as it could mean the difference between going in the 5th round, to going undrafted.

Projected Draft Round - 5-undrafted

Dale Moss: 6' 3" 220 South Dakota State - Moss is a two sport star at South Dakota State, contributing on both the gridiron and the hardcourt, as a shooting guard. He led the Jack Rabbits in receiving in 2011, totaling 61 receptions, 941 yards and 6 touchdowns. His jumping ability makes him a threat in one-on-one matchups. A good week in Florida could cause him to get a look this coming April.

Projected Draft Round - 6-undrafted

Small School Stud:

Thomas Mayo: 6' 1" 207 Cal University of PA - Mayo has put together a tremendous career at division II powerhouse Cal University of PA. He went over the 4000 yard mark in receiving yardage for his career in 2011. He had an outstanding senior season that saw him grab 79 balls, for 1359 yards, and 16 touchdowns. This will be an important week for him in St. Petersburg, as he could get his first real taste of top college talent. He has a big frame, good speed, and naturally soft hands. Reports from Monday's practice raves about his RAC ability, and a brutal stiff arm he used more than once on the east defensive backs.

Projected Draft Round - 6-undrafted

Others of interest:

Junior Hemmingway: 6' 1" 228 Michigan - 6-undrafted

LaRon Byrd: 6' 3" 224 Miami - 6-undrafted

Lance Lewis: 6' 0" 209 East Carolina - 6-Undrafted

A.J. Jenkins: 6' 0" 192 Illinois - 6-undrafted

Greg Childs: 6' 3" 215 Arkansas - 6-undrafted

Tyler Shoemaker: 6' 1" 214 Boise St. - 6-undrafted

Hopefully the Devin Thomas reference doesn't have everyone running away. haha
what happened to him after that injury did he ever come back'?
Thomas was never injured, you're thinking of Kelly
no in one of the last games of the regular season for the giants i thought thomas got seriously injured
He was active both playoff games
Shanny got it right with him

at least in terms of a starting WR

Yeah you are right

He got carted off the field.

I was

Halfway out the door when I saw your comment.

Personally, I’m not interested in anymore receivers under 6’3". Although I wouldn’t mind Joe Adams as a returner.

so you don't want blackman?
No thanks.
I'm not in the market for a Top 10 receiver unless they are comparable to Megatron or AJ Green

Blackmon is a very good receiver, but he’s not even close to the prospect that Megatron was. Too much a gamble to take a Top 10 WR. I’d much rather get a QB, OL, or DB and take a flyer on a big possession receiver later. AKA Brian Quick

I concur
hes a beast though. better than the "monster" Dez Bryant (no 100yd games this season). Still it would be nice to have an elite WR.
Kind of funny how that system produces "elite' prospects...
its the # of TDs he scores after contact that is crazy.

But NFL is bigger and badder so prob cant rely on just beating up some DB

sports science said he had a vertical that made his highest point 2" higher than plax burress

even while being 3" shorter. therefore he’s our redzone threat.

I caught that too.

he really came out of nowhere (sorta). wasnt highly recruited just worked his way up and exploded. 2-time best WR in college, this guy is def worth #6.

Was Charles Rogers worth the #2?
If you're asking if he was worth shit, then yes. The second overall pick, no.
So promising them damn "broken collarbones" and "MaryJane"
hey, how bout that...
Sports science also

Touted Selvish Capers’ athleticism. I used that info to buy a cup of coffee. They still made me throw in $1.50.

i farted once.
The gas build up from years of not doing so must be extraordinary

I feel bad for the pain you must experience on a daily basis.

Maybe we can get that 6'8" QB from Arizona to convert to WR for you

Brock Osweiler (sp?)

The Matt Jones route?

Nah, I’ll pass.

Matt Jones might've been good if he didnt get into hard drugs...
I was down to pick up Pryor last year to do that...

for a supplemental pick

Arizona State
Yeah, that's the one
nobody under 6' anymore please

i’m tired of watching the Washington midgets run around and try and out jump 5’11" defenders and lose.

I wonder if Caldwell being fired will shake up the draft any.
I think it makes it all the more likely that the Colts are moving on from Peyton and drafting Luck
Yea... it'll be interesting, to say the least, to see who they'll hire.

Jeff Fisher might be slamming his head into a wall right now. You have to wonder if the prospect of coaching Luck lures one of the big names out (Cowher, Gruden, Zorn)

liked how you slipped that last one in
ya I know

" that’s what she said"

young GM from Philly...

speaks of WCO (Marty Morning), perhaps Jon Gruden (WOW, coach and new QB).

Parks, I wonder if I am the only one to see you slip Jim Zorn in that list, very funny.

Nope, you're not

Just that most of us tend to block that name from existence.

Yeah I agree

I think Peyton will be released in March before he get that 28 million dollar bonus, it will be interesting to see where he lands

maybe they go RG3 #1 instead of luck
Only if they hire Art Briles or his mom
That notion is just impossible
Speaking of WRs

Has anyone heard how Hanks rehab is coming along?

Heard he was coming along well and should be ready by OTAs

Full recovery expected!

Yea I think it was a great sign that his injury was classified as not severe, and that surgery was not recommended
hopefully it isn't a landry type thing

where it lingers into next year

What do you guys think about Nick Toon?
i'd take him in the 2nd
big fan of his

unfortunately a foot injury might keep him out of the Senior bowl

Nice fit for the Jets

not to mention the sentimental ties

totally, i've mocked him there a couple of times

but then again their need for a QB could keep them from taking a WR in the first two rounds.

side note I loved Al Toon, i really only got to watch the end of his playing career, but he was a really nice WR from what I remember and if his son is anything like him, some team is going to be very lucky.

BTW Steve

now that the draft class is set what do you think the value of that pick is if we try to trade down to a team in who would slelct in the mid late firs round. Is a 1,2, nd 4 too much, to little?

I'd say slightly too little for the mid part of the round, and well short if it is more late round (say 25+)

now to maximize the trade value the Redskins could consider trading back twice. A trade to the mid teens could land you an extra 2nd and 3rd rounder (or maybe a 4th this year and 4th next year), and moving back to the late 20’s could land another 2nd rounder and a 4th or 5th rounder (it could possibly for a 1st next year as well). And if the right team gets desperate it could even be for more.

I like this

idea more and more if RGIII is not there at 6.

Please don't suggest trading back twice....the idea gets me way too excited
haha i apologize

I like BJ Cunningham, Marvin McNutt, and AJ Jenkins as 3rd or 4th rd picks

dre Kirk just got busted

Saw some mocks having the skins grab him. Too skinny?

I can see Jenkins being a late round steal. Far from polished though, like Devier Posey, kinda loose in his route running.

Became weary after the MSU part

Stopped reading after devin thomas

Of the names listed

Jarius Wright, Junior Hemingway, and Greg Childs have stood out on my viewings. Neither enough to be worth drafting though, imo.
