#6: Morris Claiborne, CB, LSU
While the "Honey Badger," Tyrann Mathieu, piled up the headlines at LSU, the best cornerback on the team was quietly dominant all season. Currently a top-five player on my Big Board, Claiborne is the top cornerback in the draft. He has good length at 6-foot-1 and is a physical player at more than 180 pounds. The Redskins will need help at corner headed into 2012, particularly in a division in which the Giants, Cowboys and Eagles have elite talent at wide receiver. While not quite the athlete, Claiborne is actually a better pure cover corner than Patrick Peterson, the No. 5 overall pick from last year.
Off the board in order was: Luck (IND), Blackmon (STL), Kalil (MIN), RG3 (CLE), T. Richardson (TB).
Kiper had Alshon Jeffery going to the 49ers with the 31st pick.

Yea and I'm standing up applauding
Parks Smith - January 18, 2012
Can't tell if serious....
But I am when I say this is a great first pick.
Ronnie Adkins - January 18, 2012
I built the cornerback at #6 bandwagon, don't ever forget it. There is still plenty of room.
Parks Smith - January 18, 2012
I'll make sure everyone gives you credit
Ronnie Adkins - January 18, 2012
I would consider hopping in that wagon
if you pull me around the block in it a few times. Whatcha say Parks ?
skinaholic - January 18, 2012
Not so fast parks
Ive been vouching for Claiborne a long time now
mr.snyderhireme - January 18, 2012 via mobile
Get in line. He's going #5 to Tampa Bay.
Diesel44 - January 18, 2012
ha
I wanted Ras I Dowling last year…maybe i just built the frame for the wagon
ptowny - January 19, 2012
This would be a great pick.
HogHunter - January 18, 2012
51% of ppl in poll said "NO"...I wonder who they want?
Dre Kirkpatrick? He can be roommates with Trent and Fred.
Kevin Ewoldt - January 18, 2012
I can sell them my old bong
made out of a soda bottle
Ronnie Adkins - January 18, 2012
I'm willing to bet 95% of that 51% didn't read 100% of the question and think they can still draft RG3
Parks Smith - January 18, 2012
I'm willing to bet 98% of that 51% still think
trading up for RGIII is a valid option.
Ronnie Adkins - January 18, 2012
good point, let me adjust my numbers...
Parks Smith - January 18, 2012
i'm in the minority then

To be fair, Kiper is an idiot.

That last point may not be wrong necessarily. For all we know John Elway could also be very good at eating cheeseburgers.

Rodskins - January 19, 2012 via Android app
Think our first pick is going to be offense
but if the draft plays out this way, AND we can’t trade down. I guess this works. We do need help in the beat box.
Al_CaPWNED - January 18, 2012
So you want to draft
Doug E. Fresh?
CJHutch - January 18, 2012
Would be fine with Claiborne
I haven’t seen much of him personally, but he’s a pretty good cover corner by most accounts. If we can’t get RG3, or a trade down, I’d be happy with a corner at 6.
UkRedskin - January 18, 2012
I've been hearing people I respect on this blog talk about CB in the first
but I’d like to hear a bit more about the rationale behind it. Is it a ‘best player available’ type of thing or do you believe an upgrade at the CB position will materially impact our bottom line for seasons to come?
This isn’t a leading questions, I’m actually interested in your thoughts, because I feel like there are great CBs around the league on teams going nowhere.
SCSkin21 - January 18, 2012
It's a little of both.
I’ve always been a fan of taking the best player available that fills any position of need. If there’s no QB worth the 6th pick (RG3 taken by someone else, for example), then Claiborne certainly appears to be one of the better players in this draft class. CB isn’t necessarily a pressing need, it certainly needs to be addressed at some point this off-season. If Claiborne is a true shut-down corner (and I can’t say either way at this point, haven’t seen much of him), then he would absolutely benefit this defense.
With the pass-rush we now have, to add a shut-down corner to cover the number 1 receiver or even just the hot read, then we’ll benefit. With Kerrigan, Orakpo, Cofield, Bowen and the rest up front giving the opposing QB little time to make a throw, if we can then take away his go-to receiver or his hot read, he’s gonna get sacked, force a throw that could result in an INT, or at worst have to throw the ball away.
Hopefully that answers your question.
UkRedskin - January 18, 2012
It does, and I think I want a shutdown CB now. Ha thanks for that
But seriously, if an affordable QB option attainable out of the #6 position and trading back doesn’t make sense, I can see how Claiborne could be big for us.
Our front 7 is shaping up to be pretty diesel.
SCSkin21 - January 18, 2012
Yup, it’s nice to have a front 7 that can generate pressure. It makes getting off the field on 3rd downs so much easier.
UkRedskin - January 18, 2012
Absolutely agree
Shut-down CBs are almost harder to come by than franchise QBs these days. Plus with the league developing rules that favor pass happy spread offenses, it makes perfect sense to go with CB. I mean look what Carlos Rodgers has done for that San Francisco defense! Plus, I think DeAngelo’s ball hawking skills could benefit tremendously if he had an elite corner on the #1 WR.
Kurtstack - January 18, 2012
I think we can only go defense in the first if we address QB in free agency...
If we enter the draft with the expectation of drafting Foles, Weeden or Tannehill, I think we have to give him a chance by going with Reiff. Our defense was not top 5 this year, and adding Claiborne might give us that edge to push us up the rankings and allow less points (which can get wins just as much as scoring more points).
ptowny - January 19, 2012
I skimmed the comments on the app and didn't see this
This is basically my question, sorry about the repeat.
DavidDunn - January 18, 2012 via iPhone app
Check a few comments up David.
Response is titled “It’s a little of both.”
UkRedskin - January 18, 2012
BPA
Every passing team goes 4 and 5 wide, so having 3 or 4 good CBs can’t hurt either.
Mr. E - January 18, 2012
I Disagreed.
If RGIII is unavailable i think Shanahan trades back for more picks like last year.
darevSkins - January 18, 2012
You didn't read the rules!
Parks Smith - January 18, 2012
ok since you explained it that way...
change my vote from No to Yes.
If we have to pick someone at #6, he is BPA and a team need.
jgibbsfan1 - January 18, 2012
Whoops!
Yes if we have to pick at 6 then id go for the best player. With Kalil and Blackmon gone, this is a good pick.
darevSkins - January 18, 2012
Does this make him
Part of the 98% of the 51%, or is there another equation for his question?
CJHutch - January 18, 2012
damn did the same thing
voted no because I wanted to trade back, stupid skimming technique
Draco - January 18, 2012
Claiborne is a fine pick and better than say Trent Richardson but I would put this pick on the offensive line
if the board is what it is, Reiff, Martin and even DeCastro would all be picks I’d make over a CB.
Cornerback is a position that could be addressed in free agency, offensive tackle is not. I am also really high on a number of 2nd-4th round corners, who i think will really surprise some people. While I like some 2nd to 4th round tackles, i think the drop off is further.
Steve Shoup - January 18, 2012
I have to agree
If it accordance with the “rules” then I would go OL without hesitation. CB is a need, just not an immediate need right now, but not that high.
Bryan Black - January 18, 2012 via Android app
yeah
I also don’t think CB is as important as OL, and whether it is a LT, RT, C or G, we need some star talent there.
Steve Shoup - January 18, 2012
would be a good pick, i just dont think Claiborne make it to #6. The Bucs need CB help so they would most likely grab him
Highspeed30 - January 18, 2012
FA & the Draft
To become the dynasty that we so deserve we will do so mostly by the draft and with help from free-agency. We have to get bigger, faster, & larger at all of the following positions: quarter-back, running back, wide receiver(s), tight-ends, tackles, guards & center(s), on the defensive side of the ball it would be: defensive linemen, nose-guard(s), linebackers, corner-backs and safeties. Keep in mind we had six draft choices last draft, this year we have eight. By being smart and trading back we picked up six extra choices. This year I expect us to do so and get at least fourteen draft picks and pick up four to five starterss
Redskin-Ron - January 18, 2012
So, basically we are small and slow everywhere but punter then?

Brutus89 - January 18, 2012
Morris Claiborne at 6?
This can only mean he goes to the Panthers in the second round.
Kiper is the biggest gas bag on the planet.
iH8dallas - January 18, 2012 via mobile
I see a lot of approval in the thread
Is it because we think he is the BPA at 6, because we think corner is our biggest or close to a top need (I would include the idea that a strong nickel corner is req in today’s NFL for this choice, or because of distaste for D’angelo hall,Wilson, or an assumption that Hall won’t be here in a fee years. Or some combination of those.
I am pretty sure Kiper doesn’t predict trades so I know this the opinion of a forced 6 pick and everyone from 1-5 off the board.
DavidDunn - January 18, 2012 via iPhone app
Kiper only bases his picks on team needs versus talent
He doesn’t factor in a lot of the intangibles such as work ethic, football IQ and leadership skills. That’s why he always so far off, because teams get a better idea during the combine and actually sitting down with them during interviews. As far as Jamarcus Russell….Kipers and the Raiders failed miserably in their research because I recall there being quite a few concerns about him leading up to the draft
Bryan Black - January 18, 2012 via Android app
Here is Kiper's mock from last year at this time..
1. Carolina Panthers: Nick Fairley, DT, Auburn Tigers
2. Denver Broncos: Patrick Peterson, CB, LSU
3. Buffalo Bills: Marcell Dareus, DE, Alabama
4. Cincinnati Bengals: DaQuan Bowers, DE, Clemons
5. Arizona Cardinals: Blaine Gabbert, QB, Missouri
6. Cleveland Browns: A.J. Green, WR, Georgia
7. San Francisco 49ers: Robert Quinn, DE, North Carolina
8. Tennessee Titans: Von Miller, OLB, Texas A&M
9. Dallas Cowboys: Prince Amukamara, CB, Nebraska
10. Washington Redskins: Cam Newton, QB, Auburn

Good find.
Interestingly, for what its worth, last year a few friends of mine got together on draft day and made top 10 predictions. I got 7/10. Missed on Aldon Smith, Locker and Gabbert.
UkRedskin - January 18, 2012
What's you thought on what's going to happen this year with the Skins pick?
Not what you want to happen, but what you think will happen?
Copious 1 - January 18, 2012
Right now, I don't know.
I’d rather wait until at least after the combine to start doing mock drafts/off-seasons etc.
My gut feeling as what they will do if the draft was tomorrow, I don’t think they stay at 6.
UkRedskin - January 18, 2012
BOOOOOOO weiny!
Parks Smith - January 18, 2012

But fun to speculate
Bryan Black - January 18, 2012 via Android app
haha
so you had Gabbert going to us at 10?
ptowny - January 19, 2012
No, I had Locker to us at 10.
Gabbert to the 49ers, and nick Fairly to the Titans.
UkRedskin - January 19, 2012
and he was probably higher on Miller and Cam at that point than nearly everyone else. Bowers had a serious injury revealed but all the rest were top 15 picks I believe.
What’s funny is go back 6 months earlier and everyone had Jake Locker #1.
Mr. E - January 18, 2012
Claiborne may be great, but
it just doesn’t make sense to me to use our first round pick on a position we don’t need. Hall and Wilson are fine – how much of an upgrade could Claiborne be? We need QB, safety and WR far more. It appears that Kiper assumes we will get a QB elsewhere, so will take the best player available. Kiper’s mock poses a dilemma though. If the draft goes something like he says, and we don’t want to reach for Tannehill, what do we do? That problem suggests to me that it would be better to use that pick, along with other picks or players, to move up, or, alternatively, trade down to get more picks. In any case, don’t waste a #6 pick on a cornerback.
Donnio1234 - January 18, 2012
+1
CB is just not gonna cut it unless we’ve already signed Flynn. Go Oline or Blackmon if he slides. OR sign DeSean, trade up and pick RG3 then use a 3rd on LMJ and become an offensive powerhouse moving the ball between the 20s
PlaymakerInDC - January 18, 2012 via iPhone app
Facepalm
Parks Smith - January 18, 2012
Wilson yes, Hall no.
Diesel44 - January 18, 2012
I like the idea of PACKAGING Hall in a trade up with the Rams.
I know, I know, some don’t feel he has value but let’s remember…..they were playing street FA’s during the season, so he would be elite compared to what they have. Sign Finnegan and/or Grimes in Free Agency.
Copious 1 - January 18, 2012
And then Barnes become a starter
I swear if you look up the meaning of “up shit creek without a paddle” Barnes starting is somewhere in there
Bryan Black - January 18, 2012 via Android app
You missed the part about signing Finnegan and/or Grimes to replace Hall.
Copious 1 - January 18, 2012
I think i selectively overlooked it
and didn’t mention the rest of your idea because of the shock of Barnes actually starting shocked the system
Bryan Black - January 18, 2012 via Android app
Packaging Hall with anything make the "anything" less valuable.
I.E.
1st RD pick + Hall = 2nd rd pick
2nd RD pick + Hall =3rd pick
etc, etc.
He’s a terrible cover CB and a 1st down machine for other teams on 3rd down. I loathe him.
Diesel44 - January 18, 2012
I think the Rams and Vikings can think of better ways to spend the $6 million it would take to bring Hall in.
why wouldn’t they just sign Finnegan or Grimes?
Steve Shoup - January 18, 2012
double facepalm
we need a guy to shut down the 3rd and long plays. none of the dbs seem to be able to cover. i find it really shocking to see a redskin fan not wanting to draft the best cb in the draft if we are stuck at 6 and he falls to us. but im pretty sure he will be gone before we pick
munson21502 - January 19, 2012
I don't see an argument that CB is a bigger need for us than WR, QB or OL.
There’s no way our WRs are better than Hall/Wilson.
Same with the OL
Same with the QB
smutsboy1 - January 19, 2012
thats because there isnt 1
we do need a good cb. if the best cb in this years draft fall to us we have to take him if we get no offers. instead of useing our 6th pick on a mid teens player of a more needed position. its just the better move.. but again there is little chance he falls to the 6th spot.
munson21502 - January 19, 2012
Reaching 10 spots for a player simply isn’t the worst thing in the world.
Logic like yours is precisely how we’ve ended up drafting so much defense, specifically the secondary, and neglecting the offense.
And our offense has been terrible b/c of it.
Obviously I’m not saying “reach at all costs,” but when are we going to start simply addressing our biggest needs? (OL-QB-offense)
If we say, “not this year” every year, then it never happens.
smutsboy1 - January 20, 2012
DREAM SCENARIO
There’s no way this guy falls to 6th. But of he does, I’m all for it. Our secondary was terrible last year and after QB, corner’s our next top need.
bneven - January 18, 2012
CB more of a need than safety?
Or even a big, fast WR? Or O-line? I was talking of relative need. The Skins might want to upgrade almost every position except OLB and, of course, Fletcher’s slot, but that is not practical.
Donnio1234 - January 18, 2012
Wait
You really think our WRs are better than our corners?
Our OL is better than our corners?
We apparently watched different teams in 2011.
smutsboy1 - January 19, 2012
If RG3, Blackmon & Claiborne are gone...
Trade back. Take Luke Kuechly (MLB) in the 1st, Kellen Moore in the 2nd & Casey Hayward (CB) in the 3rd. CHAMPIONSHIP!
bneven - January 18, 2012
Kellen Moore in the 2nd? WOOOOOOOOOOOWWWWWWWWWW
Parks Smith - January 18, 2012
That's what they said about Brees...He's pretty good.
bneven - January 18, 2012
No that's not what they said Brees was graded as a 1st or 2nd rounder, Moore is graded as a 7th/UDFA
Parks Smith - January 18, 2012
Projections don't mean squat to me. How often are these "experts actually right" Blaine Gabbert went very early in 1st last year if don't remember...
bneven - January 18, 2012
He was projected as a 1st rounder.
Guys typically go in their projected round. Every year their are reaches, but most guys go in their projected round.
Copious 1 - January 18, 2012
Yeah Parks, if you don't remember.
We HAVE to take the 5’10 180 Kellen Moore with his weak arm and below average athleticism in the 2nd OR we’ll be forced to watch some team take him much later in the draft.
Diesel44 - January 18, 2012
But didn't you watch him put up a bunch of points in college playing against inferior teams?
That’s exactly what we need.

munson21502 - January 19, 2012
orrrrrrrr
we’ll be forced to watch him go undrafted and then signed away to someone elses practice squad…that means no championship :(
ptowny - January 19, 2012
Gabbert put together more wins than we did this year...
His line was pretty shaky, I think if they add a piece or two, he’ll be fine. If the expectation is for a rookie to do what Newton did this year, we’re going to be disappointed this year
ptowny - January 19, 2012
Floyd better pick than Claiborne
I think a better pick than Claiborne would be to get Michael Floyd he is worth a top 10 pick. He is big, physical, speedy, great route runner, and has great hands. If we are going to find our QB of the future then we need a big WR threat that can stretch the field and win the jump ball. If we get Floyd i see a rookie QB like Foles or Tannehill having a easier adjustment period. like AJ Green was for Dalton. Man Moss, Floyd, Hankerson, and Gaffney our receiver core would be great.
squigums - January 18, 2012
I dig it.
Floyd is a monster.
Copious 1 - January 18, 2012
Both, the caps & wizards are winning... Am I dreaming?...
bneven - January 18, 2012
I'd rather trade back and try to get a Dre Kirkpatrick a little further down.
That way we can try and get Tannehill or Foles if RGIII is gone.
I’d still do absolutely whatever it takes to trade up and get Robert Griffin.
Andrew DeFrank - January 18, 2012
Who will Tannehill or Foles throw too
We need a new #1 WR. we have needed one since moss turned 30. yea he is still producing but not forever. Hank hopefully will improve some more but someone like Floyd will greatly improve our offense.
squigums - January 18, 2012
who will protect them
Steve Shoup - January 19, 2012
And if we draft a WR, who will throw to him.
See how that logic doesn’t work?
smutsboy1 - January 19, 2012
actually the logic is sound
we just have too many holes for 1 draft sadly…
Al_CaPWNED - January 19, 2012
No, it’s not.
It’s an endless loop of no logic.
If we draft a WR, who throw to him?
If we draft a QB, who will he throw to?
smutsboy1 - January 19, 2012
its easy
it is not a matter of we have too many needs for one draft its we need to fill thous holes with quality players in the first 3 rounds.
1st round
Floyd
2nd round
Foles
3rd round
Tanner Hawkinson, Don Barclay, Zebrie Sanders
are all good quick athletic OT that could fill the zone blocking scheme
or
David Molk, Michael Brewster
both are good quick athletic C that are better fit for zone blocking schemes
squigums - January 19, 2012
I was disagreeing with your statement, “Who will Tannehill or Foles throw too”
smutsboy1 - January 20, 2012
QB
Tannehill is a real possibility, injured foot and all.Dont know anything about Hank,so I caint really say.Still think though,we go after Flynn.A #1 receiver is a good possiblity too.Wouldnt hurt,If we went after Hannah, for tight end.he has skills like widden does.Because we dont knowwaht the news is on Davis.would be a good fit, opposite of cooley.SIGN OUR LEADER ON DEFENSE,FLETCHER,the ravens have lewis,we need our fletcher too.
Roy m Tillman - January 19, 2012
stanfords coby fleener would be good option at TE
lohaus#54 - January 20, 2012
Nightmare
No,just been living a nightmare for the last 10yrs,and it still going and goig and going.ENOUGH allready.Time to put up or shutup!
Roy m Tillman - January 19, 2012
I'll be amazed
if Claiborne was still there at #6 and there’s no way the Skins can’t take him. He’s the best cover corner I’ve seen in a long time. Having said that, I think there’s no way the Bucs pass on him with Ronde Barber and Aqib Talib as their starters.
2up2down - January 18, 2012
How does anyone not like this pick?
No QB that’ll be around is truly worth 6th overall. Griffin is looking less and less like an option, landing Claiborne would be great for this team.
Brutus89 - January 18, 2012
more important needs
there are more important needs than CB. Like WR, C, OT, then maybe CB, ILB
squigums - January 18, 2012
It’s a lot easier to get a playmaking WR or decent lineman than a shut down corner. You can find those other positions in the 2nd rd and beyond.
Brutus89 - January 19, 2012
many of the top CB's in the league were non first round picks
Finnigan, Grimes, Jason McCourty, Verner, Sherman, Flowers, Webb, Samuel, Carr etc.
Steve Shoup - January 19, 2012
I wouldn’t call any of those elite, shutdown corners.
Brutus89 - January 19, 2012
Um, at least half of them are.
smutsboy1 - January 19, 2012
I’m talking Revis, Bailey territory
Brutus89 - January 19, 2012
Thoses corners are elite
They may not be big names like Revis, Bailey, or Asomugha but they get the job done
our defense is pretty solid it has been getting most of the attention these past drafts our offense needs to be fixed now
squigums - January 20, 2012
Sure, it would help at CB - but it wouldn't do anything for other positions
in worse shape than CB. Like QB, safety, WR, O-line. It could be true that Claiborne is BPA when 6 rolls around, but in that case we should trade back with the idea of getting a good QB at a more reasonable price. I think it would be better to use the value of the #6 pick to trade up to get RG3 or Blackmon (if we already got our QB -in like Flynn, as they say).
Donnio1234 - January 18, 2012
QB is the obvious #1 need, but I also don’t want them to settle for a guy just to get one. If we can’t trade out of 6 for whatever reason (especially not likely with people looking at Claiborne sitting there) and they have to pick, they can make the best of it by taking Claiborne.
I really don’t think we’ll be able to move up if our competition truly is Cleveland.
Brutus89 - January 19, 2012
STOP DRAFTING DEFENSE IN THE FIRST ROUND
Then we can also stop wondering why our offense has generally sucked for the last decade.
This would be, what, our fourth first round pick on the SECONDARY alone, let alone the Kerrapo picks? And our fourth TOP TEN first rounder on the secondary.
Jesus.
This is THE argument showing how ‘best player available’ isn’t a universal rule.
We need to devote early-draft (1st & 2nd round) resources to the OFFENSE or it will never be good.
One tackle and one late-1st-QB isn’t going to get it done.
Arg.

I couldnt agree with you more
Our offense is a constant joke because we kept drafting the BPA for once we need to get what we need

Exactly.

REDSKIN IN NEEDS
Clayborn maybe a good fit for our defense, but and theres that BUT again!I say,go after Flynn, and yes,I agree we need a wide receiver, havent had a one since a player that came out of Syracuse by the name of Art MONk,If we could pick up one like he was, then we would have a receiver that could stretch the feild.Theres a tightend, from OU,has good hands like a Widden, can run the pass routes, his name is hannah, big, tought, have to be in order to play against someone like OU STATE.Bottom line,go after FLYNN.We ALL know what he can do.HTTR

correction
the problem with flynn is that nobody knows what he can do. It believed that he is a product of the system and that he will only do good in the packers system because IT IS THE PACKERS. Yes he had two good games but that is all we have to go on. You can not judge a NFL QB by two games. Especially if he is gonna be the franchise QB. I am not saying Flynn could not be the answer to our prayers but for the price that he will cost it might not be worth it.

Remind me
Why we didn’t try to sign Jonathon Joseph this year??
HogNasty - January 19, 2012
i hope we do get him
but i got a bad feeling that richardson will be the 1 left at 6
munson21502 - January 19, 2012
if draft a RB in the top 10 I will start a riot.
smutsboy1 - January 19, 2012
i hoping he isnt there at 6 when we pick.
but out of the top 6 players i think richardson will be the most likely to be there. if thats true i really hope a team wants to do a trade with us
munson21502 - January 19, 2012
man that would be great
smutsboy1 - January 20, 2012
kiper is a screw ball in the 04 draft he had us taking kellen winslow at 6 but gibbs grabbed taylor and then got cooley in the later rounds we all know who turned out to be the better TE.
