Every week between now and the draft, I have committed to putting together an argument for why the Redskins should trade down. You get a break from that this week.
Why, you ask? Quick story...
I am sitting at the bar in an Italian restaurant in Phoenix, Arizona (Tomaso's--I recommend the gnocchi). I get into the inevitable sports conversation with the bartender and my blind D.C. homerism shines through. As it turns out the maitre d' is also a diehard Redskins fan. As we are talking draft strategy, offseason moves and the glory days, the bartender points out that Mike Holmgren is having dinner a few tables away.
I felt a little stupid to be honest with you. It was late and the restaurant was maybe 20% full. Mike Holmgren is not a small man. As I look over, sure enough, there is the larger than life GM of the Cleveland Browns, having dinner with his wife.

He got up from the table a very short time later to leave and the bartender and maitre d' were kind of enough to direct him over to me (Kevin, I swear I did not leave the bar area and stalk him).
I had one chance to ask him a question, and I had to think quick. After introducing myself as a Redskins fan, I asked Holmgren, "Do the Redskins have any business trading up for a quarterback given all the holes they have on their roster right now?"
Without ANY hesitation, Mike Holmgren answered, "Absolutely...oh yeah. For that quarterback? Definitely." It just seemed to be implied that we were talking about Robert Griffin III.
DAMN!!! As many of you know, I have employed a rather firm rule when it comes to Mike Holmgren. He was the reason I was so blindly convinced Jim Zorn would be a good coach. He is the reason I have always been such a strong Matt Hasselbeck supporter. He is the reason why I firmly believe I could look good with a moustache and about 100 more pounds.
Dare I go against Mike Holmgren on this issue? I am so torn. He was so sure of his answer.
The good news for me: I DON'T THINK WE HAVE TO WORRY ANYMORE ABOUT US TRADING UP. I am convinced that there is no way the Cleveland Browns aren't moving up for Robert Griffin. There was something in Holmgren's voice and demeanor when he answered. He very clearly loves RG3. (This is not breaking news, as many are suggesting the Browns are going to make a move for Griffin. I just had the luxury of looking into Holmgren's eyes as he spoke about RG3. And Kevin--I can't stress this enough--there was nothing creepy about the way I looked into Holmgren's eyes.)
And before you say it--I don't think that Holmgren was trying to head fake me. He has no idea who I am--like most (all) of the general managers in the league. He loves Griffin. Colt McCoy...maybe not so much.
Congratulations St. Louis...you are going to get paid well to move down two freaking spots.

F-ck Mike Holmgren for knocking us out of the playoffs. TWICE.
I hope he chokes.
iH8dallas - January 19, 2012
That seems a bit harsh
mbedner - January 19, 2012
depends on what he means by chokes
jbh1190 - January 19, 2012
Funny timing
Shutdown Corner – Browns want RGIII?
Bullet Nation in Exile - January 19, 2012
Carlos Rogers dropping a pick-6
And Todd Collins throwing picks is what knowcked us out of the playoffs.
Elaw6 - January 19, 2012
Todd Collins was the only reason we were in the palyoffs that year
He played incredibly….much better than Jason Campbell did. I see to remember Santana Moss not running after a defender after he made a pick that ended up being pick 6.
JeffMalone#24 - January 19, 2012
I think that's a little revisionist.
Collins play ok, the whole team played well, and we played mediocre opponents.
JC was fine that year, IMO
smutsboy1 - January 20, 2012
I don't think the way JC way playing that year ..
he could have gotten us into the playoffs IMO. We were 5-7 and had just lost to a garbage buffalo team…we couldn’t even win the game after Sean Taylor died!~Todd Collins, who had not started a game in 10 years and hadn’t thrown a pass in three years, led four scoring drives against the Bears(after not starting and mostly in the second half). He then helped beat the New York Giants(finished 10-6 and made the playoffs) in a Sunday night game played in miserable conditions at the Meadowlands, and completed 22 of 29 passes for 254 yards with two touchdowns, no interceptions and an impressive 124.8 quarterback rating against the Vikings(who if they had won would have clinched a playoff birth) and then beat the Cowboys(who won the division and finished13-3) 27-6!! That is an incredible run for any QB especially in this twon the last 2 decades IMO. revisionist..whatever!
JeffMalone#24 - February 1, 2012
Of course the Browns are taking RG3
This whole issue is hilarious. RG3 lovers claim the guy is the greatest thing since slice bread and yet try to convince themselves that the Browns are content with Colt McCoy. You can’t have it both ways. Either RG3 is really, really good and everyone wants him who needs a QB or RG3 is just okay and the Browns would pass on him because they have McCoy.
Jeff Bernard - January 19, 2012
Exactly
My jaw just drops every time I read the 100 or so posts on trading up for either Andrew lock or a Robert Griffin; it is like it they continue to write about the improbable, that it will somehow become reality.
It is not going to happen for us, so let’s not throw a tantrum when it doesn’t.
Skins Fan '77 - January 19, 2012
Well there is a difference.
The Browns have a young QB who has shown flashes of solid potential in Colt McCoy. Sure, he’s been inconsistent and even played bad at times, but he has shown he has enough talent that he could potentially be a starter in this league. That topped with Seneca Wallace not being horrible when he stepped in this season and you have a potential back-up plan should McCoy completely fail next season.
The Redskins on the other hand, have bugger all at QB in terms of young potential (or just potential). Making the Redskins more in need of a QB than the Browns. So it comes down to a case of does Holmgren think that McCoy’s potential is worth developing for another season and trying to build around him, or if he wants to start over at QB? I have a gut feeling that Holmgren would love someone to jump up to 2 for RG3, so that Blackmon fell to 4 for them to give McCoy a weapon. But that’s just my gut feeling.
UkRedskin - January 19, 2012
Yes he's younger, but McCoy's numbers were errily similar to Grossman's this year
and he does have a far better O-line
Steve Shoup - January 19, 2012
You can't really
Compare McCoy to Grossman. Younger, that’s the key. I’m not saying the Browns are gonna stick with him, or even that he’ll turn out to be anything special. I’m just saying comparing him to Grossman after only 20-some games is a little goofy. Grossman is a finished product. I don’t think you can say that about McCoy, especially after being in two systems in two years.
CJHutch - January 19, 2012
I agree Colt is still developing
he had 21 starts with no weapons, no running game cause Hillis was hurt a lot this year
Highspeed30 - January 19, 2012
The more and more i research tannehill
the more i think we take him in the 10-15 range
i know its crazy but i think he’s our guy now
jbh1190 - January 19, 2012
I'd rather have Foles.
iH8dallas - January 19, 2012
Whoever it may be
I think he’s going in the first now
jbh1190 - January 19, 2012
Why, he hasn't even thrown a ball yet
Parks Smith - January 19, 2012
I don't think we have the ability to move up yet
were just have way to much needs
if colts go luck somebody trades up for rg3 that leaves us and Miami or Cleveland (depending on who trades my guess is its Cleveland) to pick between Tannehill and Foles, I heard yesterday that T-hill is the 3rd best qb he just needs some polishing and he’ll be a real diamond, along with what i read about Miami really liking T-hill. If Shanny likes T-hill enough he’ll have to take him at 6, because the dolphins wont wait for us to pick in the 2nd round and take him. they’ll snatch him up.
jbh1190 - January 19, 2012
woops i didn't mean clevland would trade up
jbh1190 - January 19, 2012
That is a pretty cool story.
I saw Chris Berman once in Hawaii. I was walking down the beach and he was sitting out at one of the beachside restaurants. When I asked him what he thought about Joe Gibbs’ ability to succeed in the modern NFL, he tried to eat me, so I shouted “WWWWWOOOOOOOP,” and ran away.
I really want to dismiss your judgement on this one, and assume that Holmgren is being cagy and really wants to trade down, potentially with the Skins. I’m pretty sure he followed you to the restaurant, knowing your connections with Harry and Clint (who are pretty hooked up with the front office). He’s definitely trying to stir up trade talks with the Skins.
Dammit, I want Luck or Griffin.
Reedskin - January 19, 2012
1st post ever
but I agree with iH8. And id take Weeden in the late rounds.
ipitydafu - January 19, 2012
Welcome.
Do you agree with “F-ck Mike Homgren” or me liking Foles?
iH8dallas - January 19, 2012
Both
I’m happy there’s someone else who agrees with me on foles
believe_the_curse - January 19, 2012 via mobile
i'm completely undecided
between the two. I don’t know much about foles
from what i hear though T-hill is the ultimate team player and you’ll never hear him complain, also hes a pre-med major and very smart.
jbh1190 - January 19, 2012
I just dont want to trust a wr turned qb.
From what I’ve seen he looks decent but not sure if it’s gonna translate over
believe_the_curse - January 19, 2012 via mobile
he isn't a wr turned qb
hes a qb turned wr turned back qb
He didn’t want to sit on the bench so he told the coach he could play wr till his time to play, which he did and did very well. And then he came and played qb very well.
jbh1190 - January 19, 2012
Oh I never knew that
I still would rather foles though
believe_the_curse - January 19, 2012 via mobile
Isn't foles of the Jason Campbell mold?
jbh1190 - January 19, 2012
You mean because he's surrounded by garbage talent?
Foles can make every throw. Campbell can’t
believe_the_curse - January 19, 2012 via mobile
no i was talking about super tall
long delivery and not mobile
jbh1190 - January 19, 2012
also white
jbh1190 - January 19, 2012
Haha!
Why not make the flacco comparison then?
believe_the_curse - January 19, 2012 via mobile
I'm not sure on flaccos race I'm pretty sure its mostly neanderthal though
jbh1190 - January 19, 2012
looking side by side at them stat wise
Nick Foles: 6’5" 240
Completion Percentage: 69.1%…(increased every year)
YPA: 7.74
TD: 28
INT: 14
Sack: 23
Ryan Tannehill: 6’4" 222lbs
Completion Percentage: 61.6%…(decreased from last year not a full season though)
YPA: 7.05
TD: 29
INT: 15
Sack: 9
I had no idea Tannehills completion % was that low they’re both monster but Tannehill has speed and elusiveness. I am really impressed by how few sacks he took. However he doesn’t look nearly as good as Foles on the side by side. I’m no scout though
jbh1190 - January 19, 2012
I really don't look at stats that much because
In college it’s alot of yac and I know it’s important but I just like to see how they handle pressure and the type of throws and ball placement
believe_the_curse - January 19, 2012 via mobile
i like his mobility
but i’m concerned about accuracy i dont know how many were drops throw aways etc. And he had a huge bowl game you cant deny that.
jbh1190 - January 19, 2012
I'm not gonna be disappointed with either I just really like foles more.
But hey I’m the one who has a mancrush on colt mccoy
believe_the_curse - January 19, 2012 via mobile
I had one on Jake Locker
jbh1190 - January 19, 2012
That's not low for how many times he has to throw a game
Parks Smith - January 19, 2012
so where do you sit on the RG3 Foles Tannehill debate
who would the mighty parks wish to play for our beloved redskins
jbh1190 - January 19, 2012
Parks never makes a choice. Just an argument for everyone haha
believe_the_curse - January 19, 2012 via mobile
Parks will chose you just have to ask him kindly with his full name
Your Roylaness Parks Sir who do you think we should draft at QB
jbh1190 - January 19, 2012
Beyond false, stand by my opinions every time
RG3 vs. Tannehill, isn’t a debate. They aren’t even close, its not even logical to think a team would consider that a choice at all.
Parks Smith - January 19, 2012
It is a debate when
we’d have to move up for RG3
jbh1190 - January 19, 2012
a facilitator
Donnio1234 - January 19, 2012
It's Foles hyperaccurate, improving stats that caught my eye a year ago.
I really see him as “Jason Campbell but better”… he’s a traditional QB who can be extremely accurate behind a very bad OL and with limited WR support, who has the arm strength to put the ball down the field.
I thought a year ago that if Shanny was looking at 2nd tier guys, Foles was the one…. and I still think that’s accurate. He’s been a four year starter, who never had a bad year and has IMPROVED every year in every phase of his game. He may not have the upside of, say RG3 or Luck… but the “bust risk” factor seems to be very low, where this guy will be a dependable starting QB in the league who can win games for you.
BillWard - January 19, 2012
After watching some video break downs of all this plays
I see a lot of potential in him. I like most of what I see mechanically. I don’t know anything about his “intangies” but i’m sure that will come into focus as the combine approaches
Al_CaPWNED - January 19, 2012
Foles does not have a winning record as a starting QB
winning games as a QB is important
Highspeed30 - January 19, 2012
Because he can control what the defense does.
And make the decisions for the coaching staff. Oh, and control how much talent he has around him.
soup du jour - January 20, 2012
Always thought that Holgren looked like a grand wizard...
mkjo - January 19, 2012
I like Weeden in the later rounds too. The value of getting the guy where we can and he, in my opinion, could start for 5 or 6 seasons is great.

Brutus89 - January 19, 2012
Tomaso's?
God, I hate that place…what were you doing in Phoenix??
Bullet Nation in Exile - January 19, 2012
I saw Ryan Leaf at Shoney's Big Boy...
…and we traded questions. I asked him if it’s a good idea to get the 2nd-highest rated QB in the draft, he said, “ALWAYS.” (And he really, really meant it.) Then he asked, “Are you gonna finish those fries?” So, scoop right there.
44ever - January 19, 2012
It's funny
Whenever i see the name Ryan Leaf I don’t think of a person I picture an actual tree leaf :/
TheDeepBall - January 19, 2012
Who's privates is that tree leaf covering?
Skins Fan '77 - January 19, 2012
That seems kind of odd that a Shoney's cashier would eat your fries like that
mbedner - January 19, 2012
I thought he was talking about th e bus boy.
It was Ryan Leaf he mentioned, wasn’t it?
BillWard - January 19, 2012
Homer says ...
Let me go on record one more time – I do not believe the Cleveland Browns will trade up from the 4th pick in the draft. If Robert Griffin III fell to them at 4, then they’d gladly take him. But I still feel like they use their two first rounders to get playmakers (like maybe RB Trent Richardson and WR Kendall Wright) so they can properly evaluate Colt McCoy when he has something resembling weapons to work with.
BrianMurphy - January 19, 2012
Exactly my thoughts
As I kind of eluded to in my comment higher up.
+1
UkRedskin - January 19, 2012
I feel the same way
Parks Smith - January 19, 2012
I just checked Mike's draft history back to 2005
The man does not take playmakers on offense in the first round… ever
so now I have no idea what Cleveland will do–history dictates that they will take offensive lineman or a defense of player
Skins Fan '77 - January 19, 2012
which mike
shanny or holmgren?
jbh1190 - January 19, 2012
holmgren
I just finished looking at his entire history regarding the NFL draft…
he has had only two selections in the top 10 ever–both times he took a wide receiver.
If he is in the top 15, he tends to like defense of backs.
So there may be a good chance that they use both selections on defense and bring in free agents for offense… that really is his tendencies
Skins Fan '77 - January 19, 2012
God help them if they need another year to know that McCoy is a mediocre NFL QB at best.
smutsboy1 - January 19, 2012
This post only proves that we NEED to trade up
If Mike Holmgren, an actual NFL GM, is saying that we need to trade up, then you know that our need for a franchise QB trumps all other need.
The Redskins have made some horrible choices at QB. Now is the time to change that.
I personally thought that we should have traded up for Sam Bradford when we had the chance but that’s another topic entirely.
JeanBaptiste - January 19, 2012
You're right-St. Louis really didn't want to draft Sam Bradford
Come on man
Skins Fan '77 - January 19, 2012
We made offers for Bradford...STL didn't bite
StephanHart - January 19, 2012
We didnt have anything to give them
After we threw away picks in The McNabb trade
JeanBaptiste - January 19, 2012
Holmgren's comments can be interpreted differently
Ken says MH’s eyes glowed when talking about RG3, but apparently Mike did not mention RG3 (except by implication). Also, the comments themselves sounded like plain advice – stating the obvious. From that, I’d guess that Holmgren was not planning to draft RG3. He was saying, “if I was the Skins’ GM, I would trade up”. You wouldn’t be saying that publicly if you were planning to take the target – why suggest a rival try to outbid you? But just generally, unless Holmgren is known to like playing games, I’d just look at it as a good football man giving obvious advice.
Donnio1234 - January 19, 2012
Put money on this I guarantee the redskins will do this
1. Tannehill
2. Nick Toon
3. Best OL Available
4. Best CB Available

And they would be happy to trade back to #6 for a 2nd rounder, giving them 4 picks in the top 40. That would be pretty fucking cheap. But that would also mean, that RG3 would have to fall to number 4, which i dont think is impossible.

Shanny’s future is looking very bleak. Only two realistic Qb options that could possibly help the Redskins win in the next two years are RG3 or Matt Flynn. The other options are way too raw or lack NFL talent. Anyone who thinks Rex offers any hope for next year with a better supporting cast just doesn’t understand how bad he was. The Shanny endgame is here and the options are drying up.
HogtieJim - January 19, 2012
It's all smoke and mirrors
So, you actually believe any of them especially this time of year? They say what they would like for you to think. Cool story still but I wouldn’t read too much into it
Bryan Black - January 19, 2012 via Android app
i told ya all the browns want us to trade with them to get rg3
munson21502 - January 19, 2012
they know something about him we don'tt
they’re trying to swozzle us. DONT BE SWOOZLED
jbh1190 - January 19, 2012
Just to be clear
Whats worse, being swozzled, or swoozled?

Ken, as an award-winning college journalist, this is how I would have questioned Holmgren:
“Hello Mike, I’m Ken from Hogs Haven, you may have heard of me. Can I ask you a couple questions?”
“Sure,” says Holmgren, as a meatball particle flies out of his mouth.
“First, mustaches are only for sex offenders and cops. Which one are you?”
He gives you a confused look, now you have him where you want him. He’s vulnerable….
“Who are you drafting fat ass?”

LOL
ipitydafu - January 19, 2012
Holmgren said this because HE IS GOING TO SIGN MATT FLYNN for the Browns
jmpalomo - January 19, 2012
I have serious doubts that Holmgren was thinking about throwing out a smokescreen about RG3 while having a casual, friendly discussion with Ken in a restaurant
StephanHart - January 19, 2012
That, and he's probably asked that question about a million times a day.
iH8dallas - January 19, 2012
Yes, your right he would tell his draft plans to a random stranger in a restaurant....really?
Bryan Black - January 19, 2012 via Android app
I hope... that Andy Dalton is begging for Trent Richardson...
1st Round: Nick Foles
1st Round: Michael Floyd
2nd Round: Zebrie Sanders
and sign Flynn. If anything, he’ll commit less than 2 turnovers a game. Hopefully…
NRKgoSKINS - January 19, 2012
+1
iH8dallas - January 19, 2012
youd take floyd over jeffery?
Could you imagine all the smoking a jeffery puns we could make with him
jbh1190 - January 19, 2012
Ken, why do most of your posts seem to start “So, I was sitting at the bar”? Just kidding. Yes, he wants us to trade our 6th pick, 2nd rounder, and next years 4th pick to him so he can get more picks to the draft
Redskin44 - January 19, 2012
Well, it's a good thing
He talked to Ken about it. He knows Ken is a mover and shaker.
CJHutch - January 19, 2012
No, but have you seen Clint's mom???
Now that’s a mover and a shaker!
BillWard - January 19, 2012
Doesn't it bother anyone that Jeffrey went all Michael Westbrook in the bowl game?
Bonk 55 - January 19, 2012
He beat the turtle-piss out of his runningback?
CJHutch - January 19, 2012
No, it was one of the other guys. Got himself tossed. And it wasn't turtle piss, either.
Bonk 55 - January 19, 2012
great story
and I’m not surprised – RG III will very likely be a huge upgrade for the Browns.
aFan4Life - January 19, 2012
Browns aint gonna trad up for RG3
there is no need for them to, they will get a impact playmaker at the 4 spot, whether it is RG3, Blackmon, or Trent Richardson, and then they can get another guy @ #22 so why would they move up?? they still got Colt and can give him another year a full offseason and some weapons and see what they got and if they dont like what they see then can draft a guy.
Highspeed30 - January 19, 2012
When you see Holmgren out to dinner
Please tell him just like that!
Bryan Black - January 19, 2012 via Android app
keep telling yourself that.
TheDeepBall - January 19, 2012
Why? Because Colt is mediocre and everyone knows it.
smutsboy1 - January 20, 2012
I think it’s funny HH is getting a lot of traffic from http://clevelandfrowns.com/
Great site name. They posted a blurb about this.
Kevin Ewoldt - January 19, 2012
Just to clarify
Something I’ve seen in this post and some comments…
Mike Holmgren is not the Browns’ GM. He is the President. Tom Heckert, formerly of the Eagles, is the GM. Heckert runs the draft (and has done a fine job in his first two years) but obviously Holmgren approves his decisions.
