Rex Grossman finished his ninth NFL campaign with more interceptions than touchdowns, a completion percentage below 60, and a quarterback rating of about 72. If you'll remember back to late July, Grossman was offered a multi-year deal from the Redskins, but turned the deal down in favor of a one year contract. Many would find the perplexing, so why would Rex make such a deal.
I believe if Rex Grossman wants to be back in Washington next year then he'll be welcomed back with open arms. But does Rex want to come back. Does he want to mentor a young quarterback or does he want to chase a ring as a backup for a contender? This year has shown has truly shown the value of a solid backup quarterback all around the league. As much as we continually use Rex as a punchline (it's pretty easy), he would still be a very solid and highly sought after backup, in my opinion. Also remember in the Redskins situation that John Beck is still under contract for one more season.

he will be back as a backup. noone knows the system like him.
mrhinton - January 2, 2012
Knowing the system
and being able to execute the system are two different things
Tiller56 - January 2, 2012

I hate hearing the excuse for rex coming back is that he knows this system.

Matt Flynn should sign with them if Danny throws enough
money to him. Otherwise he will go to the Dolphins.
Jcrew1179 - January 2, 2012
Here we go....
CJHutch - January 2, 2012
I want Rex to be either our backup, or the starter for Dallas, Philly, or the Giants.
He is a high quality backup… but he is a BACKUP.
I’m all for signing him to be our backup QB next year; he’s shown flashes of what he can do. He’s also shown flashes of frustrating Interceptionitis.
BillWard - January 2, 2012
I think he'll be back
I’ve got no real reason or inclination as to why he will, just a gut feeling that he’ll be back.
Beck, on the other hand, should be cut in the next few days.
mbedner - January 2, 2012
sure...he us fine in a crunch
DavidDunn - January 2, 2012
Nope!
We will sign Flynn, draft a position of need in round one like WR, QB in round two or three to be the backup.
Rex and Beck will not be back.
iH8dallas - January 2, 2012 via mobile
Did you know who Matt Flynn was at 11 AM yesterday?
Parks Smith - January 2, 2012
I always thought he had good potential
coming out of LSU. I know football outsiders loved him in the draft. I thought we were actually looking at him too as a late round draft pick.
Meraj Chowdhury - January 2, 2012
He almost didn't go in the draft to become a dentist
Parks Smith - January 2, 2012
LOL
still a lot of scouting services liked him. He had a lot of the raw tools needed to succeed at the QB position.
Meraj Chowdhury - January 2, 2012
-1
I got your back Parks.
MagicHat - January 2, 2012
expressions such as...
“loved him in the draft” and “late round draft pick” do not correlate. IF they loved him, there would be a reason, which would promote his selection higher than 7th round.
jgibbsfan1 - January 2, 2012
scouting services
are not the same as teams. Football outsiders do a lot of statistical analysis to see low round draft picks that may have a chance to be better then their draft grade indicates. Flynn was one of those players and obviously, they got it correct.
Meraj Chowdhury - January 2, 2012
"Obviously" ????????
let’s just give Flynn the MVP for next years performance, since he is the next coming of Jim Plunkett.
Please, keep the scouting of late round, backup QBs to the reasonable, thanks.
jgibbsfan1 - January 2, 2012
obviously
yeah, i am sure he outplayed his draft position…thats what obviously means…dont take everything to the extreme
Meraj Chowdhury - January 2, 2012
I've still got a Red White and Blue football with Jim Plunkett's signature on it.
Got it when he became a pro (not in the NFL, IIRC) after his Heisman season.
But your point is correct. Flynn has shown me diddly as to why we should so desperately go out and chase him instead of drafting a top college QB.
BillWard - January 2, 2012
Why are they mutually exclusive?
Why can’t we sign Flynn and a 2nd round QB?
horatius - January 2, 2012
Yes. I knew who Matt Flynn was.
Yes I watched him play against the Pats last year.
Yes I watched him at LSU.
No, I didn’t expect him to play like a madman yesterday.
What’s your point?
iH8dallas - January 2, 2012 via mobile

Redskin44 - January 2, 2012
Why get a QB in the second or third if you sign Flynn?
How does that make any sense? Flynn in 26 years old. Why waste a pick that high on a QB that is going to presumably be a very long term backup?
mbedner - January 2, 2012
well
if he pans out at worst he can be quality depth in the most important position in football. at best, you could flip him for a high draft pick. Quality QBs are few and far between.
Meraj Chowdhury - January 2, 2012
That still seems like a wasted pick. We don't have enough depth at any position yet
to become a team like NE that farms and flips players for higher draft picks. It’s just far too risky and wastful to sign Flynn and a 2nd or 3rd round QB.
mbedner - January 2, 2012
quit talking about depth...we need starters
les boulez bomber - January 2, 2012
because this coaching staff and this franchise need to generate hope. and if flynn sucks it up, then they will trot out our QB in “development” as the hope…just give them time ;)
les boulez bomber - January 2, 2012
You should be perm banned!
Tiller56 - January 2, 2012

I keep it short now.

TRADE EVERY PICK FOR PEYTON MANNING
Elaw6 - January 2, 2012
You for "the second coming of"
aka Luck
horatius - January 2, 2012
Why would you take a 2nd round QB if you're investing your future into a young FA?
we don’t need to waste picks….a 2nd round draft pick WILL be a 2012 starter. Why not draft a linemen to protect the precious, holy of all holy’s Matt Flynn? If he doesn’t work out, use your 2013 1st rounder on the likes of Flynn or Bray.
ptowny - January 3, 2012
Yes,
He will be the bridge to our next franchise QB.
Meraj Chowdhury - January 2, 2012
This is what that would be like.
Rex: Hey new guy!
New Guy: Hi Rex.
Rex: OK lesson one, throwing a pick. Do you see all of those DBs around Santana?
New Guy: Yes.
Rex: Just lean on your back foot and let her rip. Pretty simple.
iH8dallas - January 2, 2012 via mobile
i wouldn't want him teaching mechanice
just teach the system…
Meraj Chowdhury - January 2, 2012
If Rex
“knows the system” so well, then I’m convinced the “system” involves giving the ball to the other team every other possession.
Say Rex is, er, serviceable in this offense. But quit making him out to be Good Will Hunting. He doesn’t have anything special.
CJHutch - January 2, 2012
i am not saying starter for the entire season
but until whatever shiny new qb we have is ready to play…he is decent backup thats it. Not trying to say he is starter material…
Meraj Chowdhury - January 2, 2012
Fair enough
CJHutch - January 2, 2012
i wouldn't be surprised either way
on one hand he’s familiar with the system and the players, and the coaches sometimes praise him….on the other hand, especially the last couple weeks, both shanahans have been harping on his turnovers and the inability to win with those, which (and this is complete speculation on my part) makes me think they may not resign him
another question maybe how many years/how much money is he looking for? this free agency will be interesting, not just for our team, but for others. for instance, does a cleveland make a move for flynn or another free agent QB, thereby affecting who will be drafted where; likewise, does miami think matt moore is capable enough not to trade up? so many variables.
atark001 - January 2, 2012
Wonder what our 2 year record would be
If we had kept Jason Campbell…
Cal4Commish - January 2, 2012
8-24
Mister Awesome - January 2, 2012
he couldn't make a quick decision to save his life...
in that skill set, Grossy is better. If you could combine the two together, you just might win a couple of more games…
jgibbsfan1 - January 2, 2012
Honestly, I think he would have a better record than what we got.
We can bash him all we want but Rex hasn’t done jack with his “knowledge” of the system coming in from Houston. JC probably would have improved during the second year of Kyle’s system. He had the Raiders in competition for the playoffs before he got hurt in his second year in Oakland.
mkjo - January 2, 2012
couldn't disagree more...
I saw JC personally, threw an incredible laser-type pass in pregame, and then the game started and he was completely confused, held onto the ball way to long, due to his lack of decision making ability. Sorry, I’m glad we got rid of him.
jgibbsfan1 - January 2, 2012
he's way better than Rex imho
i’ll take a guy who cant make decisions fast enough over a guy who clearly doesnt think at all. You cant, simply cannot, win with a qb who turns it over twice every game
DCrez - January 2, 2012
I think the point you are trying to make is...
BOTH suck. We couldn’t win with either one.
jgibbsfan1 - January 2, 2012
remember that before this season, he didn't receive a single phone call from other teams
nobody else is interested.
Mister Awesome - January 2, 2012
He's horrible.
End of story. A team can’t win with him playing.
iH8dallas - January 2, 2012 via mobile

JeanBaptiste - January 2, 2012
So true.
HogtieJim - January 2, 2012
Unless we draft Luck or RGII
Rex Grossman will be the Redskins starting QB week one next season.
Andrew DeFrank - January 2, 2012
You think RGII
Will be half as good as his kid?
CJHutch - January 2, 2012
Rex is fine as a backup but wouldn't he be able to more $ from someone other than us for a multi year deal?
If we don’t think a qb will fall to us in the draft we shouldn’t move up, just grab the best avail or move back and grab more pix. Seems like there’s gonna be a lot of qb’s on the market in FA and one’s that we won’t hear about (via potential trades).
mkjo - January 2, 2012
don'
mkjo - January 2, 2012
t care if rex is here or not next year
And hope we cut Beck.
mkjo - January 2, 2012
damn, i can't speak...
so glad we’re off today.
mkjo - January 2, 2012
He really isn’t fine at anything.
HogtieJim - January 2, 2012
Yes he'll be back
And he’ll be our starter. He will be flinging 60 yard dragons to Leo Hankerson all the way to the playoffs!!!
And he knows the system. This wonderful system that produces scoreless quarters, halves, and games!! Rex Gman!!!
Elaw6 - January 2, 2012
yes i think he will
saves us from signing 2 qbs plus drafting a qb too
munson21502 - January 2, 2012
Is that something that we need to be "saved" from?
I think we need to scrap both Grossman and Beck and bring in new faces. Point is, we would be in the playoffs right now if Grossman and Beck had been “above average”. 9-7 won the East!
Bryan Black - January 2, 2012
????
When has Beck or Fumbleman ever been “above average”? Never, so how is that possible? Their potential max’s out at ‘Barely Mediocre’. Point is, there was no way the Redskins were going to playoffs this year.
Elaw6 - January 2, 2012
Can't believe I'm saying this, but
MAYBE. If we draft a guy, then we may as well keep Rex around to trot out the first few games. Christ, September me would kill the current me to even THINKING this.
CJHutch - January 2, 2012
Right, but you make a good point. Starting Rex with a young QB waiting in the wings is totally different than just going with Rex...it would be tolerable
StephanHart - January 2, 2012
I don't know, November you must have been going around behind your September back.
Oh yeah
I love Rex
by CJHutch on Nov 20, 2011 2:37 PM EST
Game threads come back to haunt you, hah.
HogHunter - January 2, 2012
Nah, he and Beck will be gone as a matter of principle
Making him the backup means we are one play away from him as the full time starter again. We wont go into the season with any possibility that Rex or Beck plays games for us, not after the debacle that was this past season at the qb position.
And besides, no team in the NFL will want Rex or Beck, so if they are needed at some point next season they’ll be sitting on their couches available to come in.
DCrez - January 2, 2012
A Brief Look at Grossman's Stats
It appears Grossman, coincidentally, has nearly identical numbers as his Super Bowl year. I hope this isn’t an indication of how far our defense is still away from SB caliber; seeing that defense is the reason for Chicago’s appearance. Maybe we shouldn’t yet be closed to the idea of going D again at #6.
I’m all for keeping Grossman around as a serviceable backup. I agree with most that this is our best chance at a franchise QB, but if we are lucky/unlucky to end up with a starting FA at QB, I wouldn’t mind seeing a third rounder picked up. E.J. Manuel anyone? He lacks experience from backing up Ponder, but that kid appears very physically gifted at 6’4’’, 245 lbs, 4.5 speed, and a cannon arm. He led the ACC in passing efficiency and had a nice bowl appearance too.
TheSportsManager - January 2, 2012
There are some certainties with Rex.
Look, he has no potential to be better than advertised. That should be clear already.
He is NOT an NFL starter (even if he starts for us). He shouldn’t be.
He will throw a pick every game. I mean EVERY game. He just does. Expect it.
That said, if we draft a rookie, not in the first 6 picks (or the top 2 or 3 QBs), I would expect him to be resigned and start at the beginnning of the season.
I don’t want this to happen, but I think it might.
I hope we can find some other FA (and please, not Matt Flynn) to stop gap until we get our guy. If we get our QB this year, GREAT. If not, trade back and do it next year. Don’t push it, or force it. There are still LOTS of holes to fill, and we need quality players, not just players.
matthiasstephan - January 2, 2012
Yeah teams will just be lining up to get a turnover machine as their backup…. No other team would look at Grossman’s year as anything but abysmal. Have we really sunk so low to think otherwise?
Grossman means nothing except mediocrity at best and often worse than that. Even if he is the backup and has to see the field then there will be very little chance of the playoffs so what’s the point?
HogtieJim - January 2, 2012
rex will be back
as a backup, there’s no way that shanahan can say…..Rex will be our starting QB for next season and not have someone decent behind him waiting
alleykatt1000 - January 2, 2012
yes he will back up matt flynn or rg111
lohaus#54 - January 2, 2012
His value drops outside of here or Houston. It’s a win-win to keep him. There will be another negotiation. I expect the Redskins to have a little more leverage, just like last year and be able to get him cheap…just like last year.
P.s. Wasn’t Jason like 85 QB rating? What was so hair bad about that?
TCO - January 3, 2012
And I think Jason could roll out just fine. He’s not Vick and he didn’t like being pushed to be a scrambler, but when already in motion, it would be natural that his wheels could help (kinda like Beck).
TCO - January 3, 2012
jason campbell is the worst kind of bust
the guy has the talent so u think u can coach him into a good nfl qb….but after 3 to 4 wasted years of going 8-8 or so. u wake up to find that 5 different coachs couldnt teach the man to slide right.
