Update: Via Grant Paulsen: "Just reached LaRon Landry via phone. Says he hasn't made a decision on surgery yet. He's waiting to see how Achilles responds to treatment. Landry hopes to know within the next 6 weeks whether or not he will need surgery. He is hoping his Achilles responds to new treatment."
This surely won't sit well with Redskins fans. Via Grant Paulsen:
Mike Shanahan says LaRon Landry has elected not to have surgery on his Achilles. #Redskins
It's tough for me to form a strong opinion here since I have no idea what Landry's doctors are telling him. If Landry wasn't a free agent, would the team make him do it? Can a team make him do it? Either way, Landry has been on IR in back to back years. He played 9 games in 2010 and 8 games this season. It's hard to be optimistic that he'll both recover fully from his injury AND want to return to the Redskins.
Landry tweeted his frustration with the Redskins medical staff regarding his groin injury, which he later apologized for:
"Uuhhh oo it ain't my fault...blame the genius circus staff for the rush. wouldve been there 2wks ago. Im [sorry] but saga [continues]" Landry tweeted.

release him
need to get rid of the cancer before it spreads
munson21502 - January 23, 2012
We don't need to release him
He’s a free agent.
But I agree, it’s time for him to go. Sucks too, cuz that’s my last remaining (arrow on the sleeve) throwback jersey. My mound of ex Redskins jerseys aside though, I think it’s time to admit that he was yet ANOTHER draft mistake by Vinny. Another one with the talent, just not the ability to put it all together. Oh well, it’s not like we’re not used to playing without hm.
CJHutch - January 23, 2012
Im 99% sure Vinny had no say in Joe Gibbs draft picks.
Kevin Ewoldt - January 23, 2012 via mobile
Yeah, I guess
You’re right. Vinny was around, so it’s tough not to blame him.
CJHutch - January 23, 2012
I hear you…but if we pin him with Landry, does that mean he gets credit for Cooley and Sean Taylor? He’s taken credit for drafting them before.
Kevin Ewoldt - January 24, 2012
No no no
He’s not in a position to take credit for anything. He’ll accept who we lop him with, and move on.
Damn Adrian Peterson woulda been nice though. Or even Revis.
CJHutch - January 24, 2012
My cynical thinking is that if Champ couldn’t survive here, neither would have Revis.
Kevin Ewoldt - January 24, 2012
Champ had to
Deal with Norv Turner. Of course he wanted outta here. I think if Champ had given Gibbs a try, he woulda been happier. Especially with G. Williams around.
CJHutch - January 24, 2012
I can’t say he’s a bust because the talent is there. The injury is what has been the story. If a player’s career is cut short by injury, I wouldn’t qualify that as a bust. I think performance on the field determines that.
Was he worth the 6th overall pick? No. He’s a good player, but he’s no elite safety that makes game changing plays. The guy has 4 INTs in 64 games, I mean c’mon… He’s good but he ain’t great, and not worth the hoopla anymore.
Don’t worry, his career will be revived where ever he signs and he’ll become a pro bowler. I can see him being one of Carlos Rogers’ “guys” that wants out.
Brutus89 - January 24, 2012
I fully
Endorse this message. And if he does go somewhere else and thrive, good for him. It’s his fault more than anyone’s why he hasn’t worked out here.
CJHutch - January 24, 2012
Actually i'm beginning to question our Training Staff
Malcolm Kelly and now Laron Landry even Clinton Portis seem to never get over injuries and have all eluded to the fact that the training staff refuses to listen to them.
jbh1190 - January 24, 2012
I agree. There have been many cases in which the trainers have been called out by players, former and current alike. I think there’s something to their expertise, or potentially lack of it.
Brutus89 - January 24, 2012
Surgery for partially/ torn achilles tendons
is pretty controversial. I think in general the advice is to see if it gets better with non-operative treatment, if it doesn’t, operate. The outcomes of surgery vs non surgery are similar.
I would think these injuries would allow us to resign him with a reasonable contract. I think it’s also worth looking into telling him to lose some weight, and try to decrease the strain his muscle mass is putting on his tendons/ ligaments.
TongoTongo - January 23, 2012
maybe this means we get taylor mays
and he can be a free agent we get that was a bum that turned his career around in DC
why does that never happen here
jbh1190 - January 23, 2012
I think it takes a year to recover from the surgery
so he’s toast one way or the other. If it doesn’t heal completely without the surgery it’s page three of the same saga. If he does have the surgery he’s not going to play next season. Damned if you do and damned if you don’t. I figure he’s rolling the dice that the thing will heal on it’s own with treatment and he’ll be good to go. Don’t think so considering he’s tried that twice and lost. He’s going to take a $$$$ hit because of it one way or the other. I say let him walk (if he can) because who needs a preening SS who lords it up when he just laid the wood to a guy who got eleven yards on a third and six.
DudleyDoright - January 24, 2012
he should of gotten the surgery
as soon as he got hurt this year that way he’d be ready mid season next year.
jbh1190 - January 24, 2012
He should have had the surgery when he went on IR in 2010, then he would've been fully recovered by the end of the 2011 season
StephanHart - January 24, 2012
Exactly
Hes too wrapped up in this “my body is a temple” crap. Let the man put the knife to your knee so you can do what you get paid to do. Otherwise, retire.
CJHutch - January 24, 2012
The Achilles tendon is by the ankle
the maroon bird - January 24, 2012 via mobile
Haha, whoops
Dunno why I wrote that.
CJHutch - January 24, 2012
hahahahahahahah
I laughed so loud at this for real. Lets just cut the dude open in places that he’s fine. Matter of fact lets put a knife to his elbow too.
jbh1190 - January 24, 2012
"wouldve been there 2wks ago"
what do you think he means by “wouldve been there 2wks ago”?
hsoup - January 23, 2012
hold on
I need some sort of decoder ring
HankMonahan - January 24, 2012
he tweeted that months ago...
it wasn’t new
ptowny - January 24, 2012
Its hard for me to just let him go
We can’t pay a guy big money to just sit on the bench (even though thats our forte) I know but other than London Fletcher and maybe Orakpo he plays with the most energy on our defense. He was in the running for defensive player of the year 2 years ago. If we can get him to sign a short term contract I want the skins to do it. I can’t take the fact well lose 2 great safeties before their prime.
BermBurner - January 23, 2012
Signing him for cheap and short term is the only way we should keep him around
StephanHart - January 24, 2012
This is the problem
We have around here. Landry isn’t a “great safety” anymore than Fred Davis is a “great tight end”. To get that label, you have to do it with consistency. He’s been anything but consistent. Yes, he had one 7 or 8 game stretch where he played at a pro bowl level. Know who else did? Jason Campbell. We gonna ready his bust for Canton anytime soon?
CJHutch - January 24, 2012
I already made my T-Shirts for Jason
:(
jbh1190 - January 24, 2012
overeaction!!
Come on man! Everybody is just overreacting to his decision…I think a franchise tag on him is our next move and I agree with it.
PeetyPab - January 24, 2012 via mobile
You want to franchise a guy who has missed 15 games out of the past 2 seasons, who hasnt been healthy in 18 months?
StephanHart - January 24, 2012
Exactly
There are dozens of safeties in the league who have not only outplayed him over all, but been on the field for their teams. The franchise tag means he’s top 5 at his position. Not in my book. The only safeties worth that money are the guys who win (or won) games for their teams. Reed, Polomalu, Sean Taylor, Brian Dawkins, etc. Landry has yet to show me he belongs in that class.
CJHutch - January 24, 2012
Seriously?
Please sign players that can speak/write the English language. They all went to college… right?
HankMonahan - January 24, 2012
College
1) High percentage of NFL players didn’t attend college for education
2) This might be bigger issue for SEC athletes in the NFL
3) Refershing to see a prospect that speaks decent language & had a major harder then weight lifting.
There’s this guy who plays QB, graduated high school early, speaks our language, has all those “Tebow” intagables AND legit talent…
CptChaosSidekick - January 24, 2012 via mobile
DeSean Jackson went to UC Berkeley
He is barely literate
Elaw6 - January 24, 2012
Dexter Manley would like a word with you.
Kevin Ewoldt - January 24, 2012
SEC, no surprise
Brutus89 - January 24, 2012
I'm going to be sad to see him go
But feel like there’s no other option unless he takes a one year deal with us
travisjh86 - January 24, 2012
overeaction!!
I know he has not been healthy, however, I also know that last preaseason he could get any treatment because of the lock out, just hope this preaseason helps him and he is back to where he was before…he is a beast when healthy, nobody can deny that!
PeetyPab - January 24, 2012 via mobile
How is it an overreaction when he has played in only 17 of 32 games over the last 2 years?
And he did get treatment during the offseason….what he didn’t get was surgery.
Explain how paying LaRon any substantial money would represent a prudent business decision by the Redskins.
StephanHart - January 24, 2012
I'll deny it
He’s been Defensive Player of the Week one time, never been to the Pro Bowl, never been All Pro. He runs his mouth after giving up a 15 yard completion, just because he hit the guy. Oh, I’m sure HE would tell you he’s a “beast”, but the sniff test says otherwise.
CJHutch - January 24, 2012
I can deny that
you label him a beast? What is so beastly about his on field play?
He had about 4 good games in the last two years. He played the role of game changer in one career game (Wildcard round @ Seattle).
Elaw6 - January 24, 2012
he’s Gone Oh I, Oh I’d
better learn how to face it
he’s Gone Oh I, Oh I’d
pay the devil to replace him
Redskin44 - January 24, 2012
ADIOS LARON!!!!!
It’s been real. It’s been fun, but it hasn’t been real fun
I hope the fan base of which ever team you go to enjoys watching you get 3rd degree burns on deep balls, charbroiled on double moves, and excessive celebration when down 28-0.
What a giant flop.
Elaw6 - January 24, 2012
I really don't understand how he was burned so much
the dude is so fast.
jbh1190 - January 24, 2012
When you bite inside, and then a player who is faster or equally as fast as you runs by you, it's usually hard to catch up
StephanHart - January 24, 2012
He's gone
There’s a disconnect there. I see the staff trimming what they think is fat.
He’s no good to them off the field, and that’s where he’s been for the past 2 years.
I honestly see them moving on from Landry and addressing safety in the offseason. I’m personally hoping Atogwe is back and isn’t a cap casualty.
Brutus89 - January 24, 2012
What fat Landry all MUSHGHLE baby
jbh1190 - January 24, 2012
Sadly that might be how Landry thinks you spell muscle
