I wanted to post some thoughts on what I saw today at the Senior Bowl's South practice, for my full report go here. While exchanging e-mails with UKRedskin, I mentioned how I was curious to see what people watching at home got from the practice, and he came up with the idea of posting both view points. I'll post some of my thoughts first, before posting UK's.
Quarterbacks:
Brandon Weeden, Ok. State: Weeden is really separating himself from the rest of the quarterbacks down in Mobile. In addition to showing good velocity and accuracy with his throws, he stands out due to his maturity as well. He appears to be communicating the best with his receivers and backs, making sure they lineup properly and acknowledging them when they make great catches. Just really looks to be a leader on the field.
Nick Foles, Arizona: Foles took a step back today overall. He shows a strong deep ball, but his accuracy was off today and many of his passes sailed out of bounds. Overall I thought his footwork was really solid today, but his release was slow today and not very impressive. While his slower delivery might not be as much of a problem in practice where the defensive linemen, aren't supposed to hit the QB, it won't fly in the NFL. Foles needs to rebound the rest of the week to be considered a top 5 QB option.
Ryan Lindley, San Diego State: Lindley is just too inaccurate and inconsistent at this point. Today he'd make one perfect throw and then miss on the next two or three (badly) which were much easier throws to make. Really seemed to struggle on timing routes, and waited too long for his receiver to come open.

Running Backs:
Chris Rainey, Florida: Rainey got equal time at both RB and WR, while also returning kicks. Was an apparent favorite of the Redskins coaching staff, as in the evening press conference Mike Shanahan chose him to represent the team (and spoke glowingly of him). Rainey showcased both his speed and catching ability during today's practice. He showed nice versatility and should be a nice utility player at the next level.
Vic Ballard, Miss. State: Ballard ran really strong today, he showed nice burst through the hole, and really finished runs. He didn't look as comfortable catching the ball, but does look like he can be a nice back at the next level.
Wide Receivers:
Juron Criner, Arizona: Criner just had a fantastic day. He caught everything thrown his way including multiple highlight reel catches. He got better separation in the 1-on-1 and team drills than i expected and really turned some heads today.
Jeff Fuller, Texas A&M: Fuller made two really nice catches on the first two throws he saw, and it looked like he was going to build on his impressive first day, but after that he went down hill. Fuller had a couple of bad drops through out the practice and while he made a few nice catches, it wasn't a great all-around day.
Patrick Edwards, Houston: Edwards really struggled yesterday, but rebounded with a nice all-around practice. He looked real clean in getting out of his breaks and did a better job of catching the ball away from his body.
Offensive Linemen:
OT Matt McCants, UAB: McCants still didn't have a great day, but he looked light years better than yesterday. It's important to remember that McCants is consistently going up against top 15 talents, Quinton Coples, Melvin Ingram and Courtney Upshaw. So an average day against them is still pretty impressive. I saw greatly improved footwork by McCants, but his rawness is still apparent.
OT Zebrie Sanders, FSU: Sanders was another lineman who improved today. He still struggles to anchor consistently, especially against the top rushers. Seems more comfortable on run blocking plays, and flashes enough to say that he could start early (on the right side), but I want to see more strength in his game.
OT Jeff Allen, Illinois: Allen improved today and showed nice footwork and a decent anchor. He's not an elite prospect, but does look like an eventual starter at the next level.
Corner backs:
Casey Hayward, Vanderbilt: Hayward really seems to be taking to the Redskins coaching staff extremely well. Displays a lot of leadership out there on the field helping teammates get into the right position and talking to them inbetween plays about what they need to work on. While there is a general concern about his deep speed, he never really got 'beat' throughout the day. Hayward also showed a good bit of physicality today, which helped him cover some of the bigger receivers. If I'm a betting man, I'd say that if Raheem Morris has any influence in the draft Hayward will be a Redskin come next April (probably with the 3rd round pick).
Dwight Bentley, Louisiana-Lafayette: Bentley is one of the most impressive players on either squad. Not necessarily because he's going to be an early round draft pick, but rather because he always seems to be making plays. Bentley had another strong practice and should really be moving up draft boards with his performance this week. He doesn't let the big receivers on the South squad bother him, and really forces them to work at it.
Here's UK's report:
Tuesday was the first day of full-padded practice. It was also the first time NFL Network got a look at the South team, coached by our very on Washington Redskins staff. Here are a few of my notes as I followed along live on NFL Network.
.Steve Shoup will be covering Senior Bowl Live this year for his own site Fanspeak.com, but will provide write-ups on players for the Redskins here on Hogs Haven as well. Check out his NFL Draft Page for more details and updates throughout the draft season! HTTR!

I keep thinking, take Blackmon at #6 and Weeden in the mid rounds. Uniting the two. Of course there’s many variables for that to happen.
2up2down - January 25, 2012
it's a really interesting idea, but honestly with the depth in this receiver class, the Redskins should try to move that pick if Blackmon was on the board.
Steve Shoup - January 25, 2012
I would trade back, pick up an extra first for next year or an extra second this year. I would draft Floyd in the first, I would draft Weeden in the second, and I would draft bpa (hoping for a cb or Ol)
fraja926 - January 25, 2012
too high for Weeden he will be there in 4th rd
Highspeed30 - January 25, 2012
i don't know, i think he's moving up boards and he says that teams don't seem to be making a big deal about his age (which i tend to agree with)
Steve Shoup - January 25, 2012
I dont think he will go no higher than 3rd rd
as much as it is not about his age, it is about his age. I dont doubt his ability
Highspeed30 - January 25, 2012
I have no idea how you figure Weeden would be there in the 4th, he’s graded out to go in the 2nd for sure
fraja926 - January 25, 2012
good idea!
My scenerio would be for us to trade down about 5 or 6 pick is anybody want to get Claiborn..I think it is spelled wrong and get the top OG/Center = Castro fron stanford, then get Foles or the 28 year old QB and Floyd with the extra second round pick from the trade..like it like!?
PeetyPab - January 25, 2012 via mobile
sounds good
you may have to adjust your order to get floyd though he’ll go in the teens
jbh1190 - January 25, 2012
Good Work
Appreciate the report.
trueredskinm - January 25, 2012 via mobile
You're welcome!
ask any questions you guys want to know. I might not always get back to them right away, but I’ll try to get to them eventually!
Steve Shoup - January 25, 2012
agreed, this is some of the best reading i’ve had in awhile pertaining the draft and prospect, i’m sick of talking and reading about trading up for the top to QB’s
fraja926 - January 25, 2012
Thanks, this has been a great experience and i'll have content to include for the next couple of weeks
Steve Shoup - January 25, 2012
How do you like Mobile?
CarverM - January 25, 2012
the experience is incredible, I'm there with tons of current and former NFL personnel, agents, fellow media etc.
I have a lot of access with players and the coaching staffs which is awesome.
As for the city itself I haven’t seen too much of it, but it is nice to not have to deal with traffic, their ‘rush’ hour is like the same as traffic on 95 at 3 am (one of the times when they aren’t doing roadwork).
Steve Shoup - January 25, 2012
One reason I will never live in nova or dc
CarverM - January 25, 2012
haha smart man
Steve Shoup - January 25, 2012
any safeties showing up?
PlaymakerInDC - January 25, 2012 via iPhone app
Unfortunately the top safety Mark Barron had to pull out (esp since he'd be on Shanny's team)
but I’ve been fairly impressed with OK. State’s Markelle Martin, South Carolina’s Antonio Allen, Boise’s George Illoka, and ND’s Harrison Smith. Martin is the best of those prospects and looks to be in the late 2nd/early 3rd range. I really like his instincts, and football knowledge (got a chance to interview him, really impressive young man).
Steve Shoup - January 25, 2012
thanks guys
From what i saw on TV i thought criner was the best WR on the field but also really liked the way joe adams came in and out of his routs. I personally thought that phillip blake looked like the best OL in the one on one drilles they showed on TV, i mean that DL is supposed to be the most dominant group in the whole game and he looked pretty consistent. Bently did seem rather inpressive, not to mention jenkins did too and one of the commentators said morris said how much he liked him. TE ladarious greene reminded me of a poor mans jimmy graham. Just my thoughts, UK feel free to agree or disagree with me i really respect your opinion!!
skinzaholic56 - January 25, 2012 via mobile
Good point on the TE Greene
While its a stretch to call him Jimmy Graham-like, I agree he had a good day. Ran decent routes, made good hand catches, pretty much did all you can ask of a TE in one on ones.
UkRedskin - January 25, 2012 via Android app
agreed he def. catches the ball well, but I haven't liked what i've seen from his blocking as of yet.
Steve Shoup - January 25, 2012
Steve
Let me know if you wanna do this format for the rest of the week. I’ll be watching both practices anyway. But feel free to keep them to your own posts.
UkRedskin - January 25, 2012 via Android app
I think that is a good idea
Steve Shoup - January 25, 2012
Steve and UK I really appreciate you guys giving us feedback on the Senior Bowl. I’m truely appreciative that you are giving us fans your insight. I wish I had a chance to make my own observations but am very grateful that you guys are doing it. I=
fraja926 - January 25, 2012
Good Job Guys!
I love the fact that our coaches get a try before you buy this year!
By the sounds of things we’re taking a CB this year
The Shanaplan - January 25, 2012 via mobile
Thanks,
i def. think CB will be on our short list. There are a number of good CB’s to watch in the 2nd-4th round.
Steve Shoup - January 25, 2012
Steve
thanks for the great job down in Mobile. I’m liking what I am hearing from Criner. Although I didn’t get to watch practice yesterday on NFL network, I am intrigued by what you are reporting on Weeden. Could his performance vault him into the second half of round 2?
Tiller56 - January 25, 2012
thanks man, try to catch Criner's performance on line if you can I think you will enjoy it
As for Weeden I do think he’s moving up. and could very well be in that late 2nd mix. He says teams aren’t really expressing a concern due to his age, and talks about Warner etc. guys who got their career started late.
I tend to agree with that assessment as whether you are a team like the Dolphins or Seahawks (maybe even the Jets) who need a starter (as well as us and Cleveland) or a team like N.O., GB, Denver, Pittsburgh, Baltimore, Chicago etc. that needs a high level backup, Weeden is tempting b/c it looks like he’d have very little problems translating into the NFL. While most of those teams might go in a different direction, I’m betting a number of teams might grab him early after what happened to the Colts and Bears this year.
Steve Shoup - January 25, 2012
Tiller, I am also a PSU fan, I just wanted to say that it has been a very very sad week for my family and me. It is amazing to me how this mass media can quickly change the story on Paterno (which they needed to do). It deeply saddened me on how the media tarnished his name. Godbless his family, he was a true american hero and a great man.
fraja926 - January 25, 2012
This jives with what I've seen of Weeden already
Really the only knock on the guy is his age, but I think it actually gives him a bit of an edge. Perhaps not in terms of draft stock, but in terms of being able to handle the pressures of being a QB at the professional level. I would be ecstatic if we snagged him in the 2nd or 3rd round. He kind of reminds me of Big Ben, but without all the raping.
willster - January 25, 2012
Weeden is really starting to interest me.
iH8dallas - January 25, 2012
Is he interesting you so much that you're willing to back off of your "1000% sure we are trading up for RG3" prediction?
StephanHart - January 25, 2012
didn't i say this a while ago and you said RG3 or bust?
jbh1190 - January 25, 2012
Exactly
StephanHart - January 25, 2012
?
…
jbh1190 - January 25, 2012
flip flop
milkman41 - January 25, 2012
I know someone said it at the top..
but I really think if Blackmon falls to us at 6, it’s going to be hard to pass on him, and then not take Weeden in the second. They have a great rapport, and if Hankerson can come back and improve, we have two of our WR’s for the next decade. Those two with Moss and Gaffney showing them the ropes for a couple years is good stuff!!
tmarine17 - January 25, 2012
its possible
but I’d say move back in the first take an OT, grab Weeden and a pair of these young talented WR’s that are down here SB week.
Steve Shoup - January 25, 2012
By the way
good work on the report. I was able to watch a little last night before switching to the Caps, so I didn’t get to see much.
tmarine17 - January 25, 2012
thanks
Steve Shoup - January 25, 2012
I don't have cable, so I'm unable to watch this, so thanks for posting
I’m a big Weeden fan, and think he’d fit in well here sooner rather than later, because of his maturity and having been in a professional atmosphere before…he seems to have all the tools as well.
I’m curious if the coaches here are running their same schemes as they do for the Redskins normally, or are they running more general schemes (like not just zone blocking, or not just 3-4 alignments?)
Sounds like Raheem is doing his thing up there too from what I read.
atark001 - January 25, 2012
Thanks man, I'm glad I can help
I got some quotes from Shanny’s presser last night that address the scheme so i’ll do a post on it later. Right now i need to head to the first practice, but I’ll be on later.
And Raheem is looking great out there, probably the most energetic coach on either team. And from listening to his interviews he wants to be here.
Steve Shoup - January 25, 2012
Appreciate it man!
atark001 - January 25, 2012
I appreciate the updates...
what will be humorous will be the ebb and flow of your reports, i.e. “I like that guy”, bad day, “We need to look elsewhere”… comments like this. At least that is the way I forecast these types of posts.
jgibbsfan1 - January 25, 2012
no that is definitely true
a good example today from the early North practice is Mike Adams. He still looked good on a number of plays, but he had a few Jamaal Brownesque plays as well.
Steve Shoup - January 25, 2012
have you noticed shanny get a man boner for anyone yet?
jbh1190 - January 25, 2012
well he was highly comlimentary of Chris Rainey at last night's presser. So far for the most part he hasn't talked about specific guys
Steve Shoup - January 25, 2012
Sounds like our staff is really taking to Criner
He was one of the first guys they interviewed when they got down there, right?
CarverM - January 25, 2012
I do think they like Criner and they have been seen talking to him, but it is important to remember that they are talking to all of these guys
On sunday night players were coming to the hotel and before they even could put their bags down teams were grabbing them for interviews. Even throughout the week the lobby of the hotel has ton of team scouts trying to find players and talk to them.
That all being said you can hear the offensive coaches praising Criner, so he is opening eyes.
Steve Shoup - January 25, 2012
6'4"
would look good in B&G
CarverM - January 25, 2012
Criner actually came into the weigh-in at just over 6'2" and doesn't have exceptionally long arms or wingspan
but his hands are MASSIVE, basically if the ball is within his reach it’s been a catch this week. But i agree def. could look good in B&G.
Steve Shoup - January 25, 2012
Wow
he’s been listed places at 6’4. I’m pretty sure that’s what it says over at drafttek. I’ve always thought it was silly how coaches inflated the roster stats like that.
CarverM - January 25, 2012
yeah quite a few guys came in shorter, though overall the WR height is really impressive.
Steve Shoup - January 25, 2012
I can make a case for Weeden being a 3rd round steal for us, but if he continues the offseason that I think he’ll have, he may jump into 2nd round consideration.
Shanny mentioned Weeden the other day, saying age doesn’t necessarily matter, what matters is on-field production. I could definitely see them going the route of Brandon Weeden if they want to bulk up in other positions early on and they think he can be money in the bank. I just think they’d have to grab him earlier than their 3rd rounder to ensure his coming to Washington.
If they think he can come in and produce immediately, I could see Shanahan going back to a “let’s start winning as soon as we can” mentality. He doesn’t have the owners patience to draw out the rebuild for too long.
I also like Juron Criner, but I think he’s a possession receiver in the NFL.
Brutus89 - January 25, 2012
i think Criner is a possession receiver in the NFL like you said
but remember the Shanny offense values those types more. Yes there is a deep passing element, but there are a lot of intermediate routes as well.
Steve Shoup - January 25, 2012
I agree, lotta intermediate stuff, but I think we have those guys. Of course it never hurts to bring in competition, but we have no deep threats to extend the field.
I’m going to make this claim, don’t kill me for it lol. I will not be shocked at all to see Justin Blackmon falls to us at 6. If he does, they need to pull the trigger because I think his build is a perfect fit for this scheme. He’s no burner either, but he’s decisively quick. I honestly think of TO when I watch him, but with better hands.
I could easily see Minnesota going Claiborne and St Louis before them going Kalil. Contrary to popular belief, I don’t see Cleveland being forced to move up cuz I don’t think we’ll go after Griffin. If it works out that way and Tampa eyes Richardson or Kirkpatrick over a receiver, this could very well happen, and I will break dance in response….
Brutus89 - January 25, 2012
i think we have those guys now, but Moss and Gaffney are essentially done after this year
and i think your right Blackmon could fall, but if that is the case he could be an amazing trade chip. With this level of receiver talent I think the Skins can find their guy(s) later.
Steve Shoup - January 25, 2012
I personally like Reuben Randle to be the steal at wide receiver in this draft.
