Redskins Show Interest in Tackle, Mike Adams

We have a lot of friends at the Senior Bowl this week, including Steve Shoup (Hogs Haven and Fan Speak), as well as JimmyK, from Blogging the Beast. I noticed this nugget from Jimmy's practice report earlier this week:

The Redskins were talking quite a bit to OT Mike Adams of Ohio St. The buzz on Adams here is that he's a sure fire 1st rounder. If "the buzz" is correct, obviously he won't be there when the Redskins draft in the 2nd round, and it's probably a safe bet he won't go 6th overall. But he could be a target that would make sense if the Skins trade out of 6 or if they trade p into the back end of the 1st round.

A few notes here:

  • Adams is 6'7, 323 lbs, large 11 inch hands, long arms, Major: Criminology
  • Adams is being coached by the Vikings on the North Squad.
  • Adams was suspended for the first five games of 2011 for his role in selling OSU memorabilia for cash and discounts on tattoos.
In an interview that Mike Shanahan did on the NFL Network set, the Redskins coach highlighted not only the need for a franchise QB, but the importance of a surrounding cast:

Star-divide

"You're trying to find that guy. The main thing you need to do is have a supporting cast around him. Because even if you get that franchise QB, there's only one team that's happy at the end of the season. The Super Bowl winner. So you got to make sure you have enough weapons around him. And make sure he has a chance to get the job done."
The Coach then went on highlighting the importance of always evaluating QBs, so that one can trade him for a high pick even if the team has their franchise guy. So, obviously the Redskins are evaluating Mike Adams to learn more about personality from the OSU suspension. Can he play Right Tackle though? Todd McShay thinks so:
"I think Adams is probably the highest-rated (OSU player)," McShay said. "He's had his ups and downs ... He's good enough to play at right tackle in the NFL."
Wes Bunting seems him as a solid Left Tackle, which I think will happen since he'll be such a high pick:
Looks the part of an NFL left tackle. He showcases good length, moves his feet well through contact and exhibits "plus' range toward the edge for his size. At times gets himself into trouble "catching" defenders at the point, but has the skill set to mature into a good starting NFL left tackle.
One last nugget from that Shanahan interview, Shanahan had this to say on the 2011 second round pick:
"I look at Jarvis Jenkins as a top ten pick. He dominated pre-season. He could be our top defensive lineman."

And yes, I realize the Redskins are showing interest in every player at the Senior Bowl, but throw me a bone here. It's off-season, and I refuse to talk Manning or Grossman.

7 weeks for FA

The draft is what 12-13 weeks….time cannot pass quick enough.

It's moving like pond water...
man, march and april

are going to be like christmas for us fans…a deluge of topics to discuss

I hope its less topics than more.
This really makes me happy

Now let’s trade that stupid 6th pick

You know this will eventually get to QB's and who ours is gonna be, right?

They always do…

Looks like Shanahan knows what's up.
In that same interview I think, he said that he thought the Redskins was close and a 8-10 win team

so to me that says that he think they have some talent if he thought they could win 10 games.

what's he going to say 'dear god we were lucky to win 5 games, did you see the lack of talent we have at QB, O-Line, and in the defensive backfield'
Buckeye fan here...

I watched this guy for 4 years and was always impressed with him. Would be glad to see him go from my college team to my professional team!

Wow...did he say Kerrigan didn't miss a snap all season?

I didn’t realize that…

Where have you been?
saw every game....just assumed he would come out at

some point for a package or brief injury etc….

Nah

CJ just means it’s been mentioned around the board…a lot :)

guess I missed the comments or posts...

When shanny talked about a supporting cast i got the impression he was talking more about the skill position. WR in particular….

What would we likely receive if we traded out of sixth and whom would be a likely trade partner?
He was talking about receiver cause Kyle was talking about not having playmakers in the Post

We do need to make more plays," Shanahan said after the South team’s practice for Saturday’s Senior Bowl. "The one thing that hurt us the most was every touchdown pass we made was caught in the end zone. There wasn’t one that was caught outside the end zone and ran in until Week 16 when Helu caught that screen versus Philly. The other one was [Brandon] Banks’ throw to [Moss], who caught it and ran in. Our guys need to do a better job of getting up the field and making some plays after the catch so we get some points on the board by running it in instead of us having to go all the way down the field and trying to throw it in."

Everybody needs that. I definitely think we do also," he said. "It helps, not for the numbers he gets, but it helps everybody else. Having a guy like Andre [Johnson] in Houston, even when he wasn’t getting the ball, it was for a good reason. It was because they were paying a lot of attention to him and that takes pressure off of the quarterback, the O-line, and the other receivers. You don’t have to do everything so hard, and have everything go perfect. Some times you need to have a player that can just take over and make a big play when stuff isn’t right."

In other news

Sports Illustrated put out a garbage mock draft that has us taking Tannehill at 6th overall. Exactly how stupid do they think Shanahan is to reach that much?

Thank you Jesus!

Couple this comment with the comments Kyle made today about teams blowing their drafts to get a franchise QB who doesn’t pan out and you have all the confirmation i need that we are not trading up. Thank you.

You had me at this...

large 11 inch hands

Is that measured from base of the palm to the tip of the middle finger?

Just curious how they arrive at that number. If that’s the case, damn.

I thought it was hand span, from the tip of the thumb to the tip of the pinky
