There has been a lot of discussion around the league of who will warrant a franchise tag this upcoming season. Over the next couple of weeks and months we will certainly go into more detail about each Redskins free agent, but lets take a look at the projected cost of franchising some of our own players.
LaRon Landry, Safety
Projected Franchise Tender: $6.22M - $6.459M
Projected Transition Tender: $5.391M - $5.599M
Landry has been the most talked about potential franchise tag player for the Skins. Many feel he has not earned a long term deal and the franchise tag could benefit the Skins by giving Landry another year to get healthy. For under $6.5 million the franchise tag option may not be as steep as predicted for Bruce Allen and his salary cap.

London Fletcher, LB
Projected Franchise Tender: $8.843M - $9.183M
Projected Transition Tender: $7.869M - $8.171M
If Fletcher wants to go at it another year, and it sounds like he does, then the Redskins should bend over backwards to give him whatever he wants. To say he's earned it is an understatement. It wouldn't make the most sense, but the Skins could franchise Fletcher for around $9 million.
Fred Davis, TE
Projected Franchise Tender: $5.416M - $5.624M
Projected Transition Tender: $4.673M - $4.852M
Davis certainly doesn't deserve a big contract after his off the field actions this year, but franchising the tight end who made less than $500,000 this year (due to the suspension) could be a far fetched option.
Rex Grossman, QB: Just kidding, but for those interested in what it would cost the Packers to franchise Matt Flynn then here are the numbers:
Projected Franchise Tender: $14.374M - $14.926M
Projected Transition Tender: $12.409M - $12.886M
Steep to say the least on the quarterbacks. All of these numbers, along with a lot of other good "front office" information can be found on FootballOutsiders.

Laron
Give him the franchise Fred and London three year contracts.
trueredskinm - January 3, 2012 via mobile
Franchise Davis, Transistion Landry, get the deal done with Fletcher before Free Agency.
Fletch wants to be here, and we want him here, so that should be doable without having to use a tag, and Davis is worth something around his Franchise number (he’s actually worth closer to the transistion number, I think). You aren’t talking about a huge jump between Franchise and Transistion for either Landry or Davis, so Franchise one and Transistion the other.
BillWard - January 3, 2012
I hope fletch stays
I’m not as optimistic as others that he wants to stay here instead of joing a SB contender next year. NE and NO could both be interested in his services and leadership
Redskin44 - January 3, 2012
New Orleans is the one that really scares me since Gregg Williams and him go way back
Steve Shoup - January 3, 2012
Great, now you've scared me
Thanks a lot Steve, now I have my fingers crossed Gregg Williams gets a HC job haha
Parks Smith - January 3, 2012
haha sorry
though if GW gets a head coaching job and they need a MLB he could still go after Fletcher. Remember he brought him both to Buffalo and here. My hope is Fletcher doesn’t want to move again and he does seem to like Haslett.
Steve Shoup - January 3, 2012
Greggggg Williams has Jonathon Vilma at MLB
Vilma is signed thru 2014
Diesel44 - January 3, 2012
Vilma hasn't been that effective these last two years
he was even giving away time to JoLonn Dunbar (yeah I don’t know who he is either which makes me think they could look for an upgrade). He had his knee scoped during the year and they could make him a cap casualty.
Steve Shoup - January 3, 2012
He was a pro bowler in 09 & 10.
Doesn’t mean much consider they screw LFB over each year. I would have to wonder why LFB would want to return to the Skins.
Diesel44 - January 3, 2012
yeah i think 2010 was name recognition and the Saints overall success
2009 he def. deserved it as he had a great year. He’s making less and less tackles, and his pass coverage is really failing. If they think this knee injury is going to be a problem I def. think they could cut him.
Steve Shoup - January 3, 2012
London Fletcher
TackleBot 2000
Diesel44 - January 4, 2012
haha
yeah that is my fear that Williams is fed up with Vilma’s nagging knee injuries and wants his guy.
Steve Shoup - January 4, 2012
I don't know about that...
he has all ready won a SB with the rams back in the day, so I think he would more likely stay and retire a redskin…contender or not.
jkitts84 - January 4, 2012 via Android app
I am in agreement here. London likes it here, so as long as we are paying him well, he will stay and retire as a Skin
StephanHart - January 4, 2012
i think he should, but there are a few situations that could interest him
It’s not a given, but hopefully Shanny lets Fletcher know how important he is, and that we will be making more changes to further improve (on defense as well).
Steve Shoup - January 4, 2012
why would you commit that much money to LaRon Landry
there is zero benefit for the skins to do that.
I could maybe understand using the Transition tag on Davis, though I wouldn’t be shocked if someone else offered him more money, at which point I’d say they have to turn down. I guess a Franchise tag is possible, but still risky.
Steve Shoup - January 3, 2012
If we could keep Davis and Landry happy with Bill's plan, I'd go with that.
Fletcher can have two or three years, because he’s a machine.
We should be looking at getting him onto the coaching staff too.
Stephen Beagrie - January 4, 2012
Tag Dirty 30 and trade him
I think we ought to tag landry and trade him in a deal for Sam Bradford… Resign davis and fletcher!
rdsknfn121 - January 3, 2012
No one will want to trade for LaRon if he's making top 5 money on a one year deal
StephanHart - January 3, 2012
yeah, that sounds perfect
Trade him and Banks straight up for Bradford, then we still have our first round pick.
CJHutch - January 3, 2012 via mobile
HAHA
What exactly has Bradford done to deserve us trading for him ?
Flamer - January 3, 2012
He is an excellent young QB
He just had a shitty line, a passing scheme that required him to sit and let plays develop (which caused him to get rocked by DE and linebackers), and he had NO weapons whatsoever. I’d be thrilled to have him in this system. Plus, we’ll be substantially better on offense and can build around his skill set.
mbedner - January 3, 2012
what exactly has
Landry done?
Truthfully, I was kidding. That trade isn’t the least bit plausible. Besides, nobody ’s gonna trade for Landry anyway.
CJHutch - January 4, 2012 via mobile
both davis and landry
havent been very good imo. cooley has been out for what seems like forever and davis didnt use that to claim the clear number 1 TE spot. landry hasnt been able to stay healthy i=and cant cover very well. i rather have a good cover guy and a shore tackel then one or 2 big hits a month. so they eiher resign for the money we want to pay them or they can walk
munson21502 - January 3, 2012
I dont know if you actually watched games this year, but Fred Davis was one of the top TEs in the leage, he definitely secured the #1 TE spot from Cooley
StephanHart - January 3, 2012
with the exception of
Being a pot head
Flamer - January 3, 2012
yes but in addition to his off the field issues
I don’t really like the idea of franchising him. For a guy that struggles blocking as much as he does, and simply disappears from some games, it is a big risk. Fred Davis to me is a great 3rd option TE, but if you expect him to be Gronk, Gonzalez, Finley etc. and carry your offense you are in trouble.
Steve Shoup - January 3, 2012
TEs are often more a product of their qb than their actual talent I think
Gronk wouldnt be setting any records in DC, that’s for sure, and I can certainly envsion Davis having a monster season with Brady as his qb. From now on Davis is one puff from a year suspension so I’d be fine if we parted ways…
DCrez - January 4, 2012
exactly
No chance he’s worth top 5 money
CJHutch - January 4, 2012 via mobile
sure
For maybe 3 or 4 games. But he has never been consistently productive. One of the top tight ends? Sorry, not even close.
CJHutch - January 4, 2012 via mobile
Look at the statistics for tight ends this year. Fred Davis is one of the top TEs. Sorry, it's a fact
StephanHart - January 4, 2012
I've seen the stats
Half of his yards came with the game decided. At least, the games he wasn’t invisible ( or suspended). He’s not a Red Zone threat. He might around the 10th best tight end. Might be. If that’s what you meant by one of the best, that’s fine. I just don’t consider that “one of the best”.
CJHutch - January 4, 2012
I wouldn't franchise any of them...
Landry: His play this year (when healthy) doesn’t warrant it!… Let him walk.
Sleepy: If he truly commits to stay away from the reefer… Offer him a contract (with lots of clauses protecting us in case he “lights up” and is suspended for a year!
London: Bring him back… I don’t care if he’s Methuselah… I don’t care if he’s the Spokesman for Depends Adult DiapersĀ®…. I don’t care if he uses Polydent Denture Cleaner… I don’t care if he keeps “regular” thanks to Metamucil Fiber Supplement… etc. etc. etc.
Sexy: Really? Do we need to discuss this?
1x1an - January 3, 2012
the Grossman thing was just to show what the Pack would have to commit to Flynn
Steve Shoup - January 3, 2012
:-) I know... I just can't help myself... anytime I can reference "Unleash the Dragon", I do it!
1x1an - January 3, 2012
right on target!
aFan4Life - January 3, 2012
unfortunately we have no one worth franchising
just pay London, no need for a tag
DCrez - January 3, 2012
We need to make it rain for Fletcher
Make it rain like it does in Seattle!
the maroon bird - January 3, 2012 via mobile
Maybe we could trade our tags for a draft pick or a player
Because I certainly don’t see anyone on our roster who I would use a tag on
Skins Fan '77 - January 3, 2012
not sure what that means?
Parks Smith - January 3, 2012
It was a joke sir
Skins Fan '77 - January 4, 2012
Dont think you can trade your tags...you just use them or lose them
StephanHart - January 3, 2012
Yeah, they are of course non-transferable/tradeable.
Diesel44 - January 3, 2012
How does it work?
Can you franchise a new player each year? Or can there only be one or two or ??? number of franchise tag players on the roster?
thanks
les boulez bomber - January 3, 2012
no one on that list is a franchise tag player though
les boulez bomber - January 3, 2012
You franchise an impending free agent,, thats it
Parks Smith - January 3, 2012
so you get one per year
or only one guy can be franchised at a time
that is what i was asking
les boulez bomber - January 3, 2012
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Franchise_tag
Parks Smith - January 3, 2012
i'm not sure in the new CBA
in the old CBA if you franchised someone and signed him during a certain window then you’d get the tag back for the next year. But if you signed him during another time period the tag was lost for the duration of the contract. I’m pretty sure that has changed though.
Steve Shoup - January 3, 2012
Parks -
I think that I threw-up in my mouth and crapped my pants before I read the ‘just kidding’ about tagging Rex.
Franchise Landry. Relatively cheap solution to plugging one of the many potential holes on the roster with no long term commitment. If Landry plays like the beast that he was last year before he got hurt, sign him long term before the season is over. If he doesn’t improve, cut bait at the end of next year and address safety next off season.
WestCoastHokie - January 3, 2012
personally, i think he has missed too much time. he has missed the better part of two seasons. i would look to sign him to a lesser contract- even multiyear. but i liked your reasoning, i wouldnt pull the trigger at that price
i wonder if his body is breaking down from being too roided up?
les boulez bomber - January 3, 2012
Only problem with Franchising Landry is
if he does well, then he will expect top five money and he’s not worth a multi-year top five money.
Chilliewil - January 4, 2012
Let him walk
And then we can address that postion in 2013 FA / Draft. One less thing to worry about this year.
WestCoastHokie - January 4, 2012
Why would you have to tag Davis?
Isn’t he a restricted free agent? Worst case, the skins get a 2nd round pick. Landry in the other case is a different story because there are no big time SS in the draft or in free agency.
Besides, i don’t want a repeat performance of Rogers where they gave up on him and he goes somewhere else and becomes a pro bowler.
LA11 - January 3, 2012
no he's not a restricted free agent
players only need 4 years of service time to be unrestricted
Steve Shoup - January 3, 2012
simple, you use the Franchise tag as...
leverage in negotiations with LL. When healthy, he is a beast, and I would like to give him the chance to get there. But I also would like protection if he doesn’t.
Fletch is a given, and, thanks Freddy, smoking dope is an advantage, FOR US! He practically has no leg to stand on and will have to sign what is offered.
jgibbsfan1 - January 3, 2012
at this point Landry is praying he gets franchised so I don't see how that is leverage for him
Landry isn’t going to get the mega deal he wants with this injury, so a franchise tag gives him a real nice 1 year pay day, while he builds up his long term value.
I wouldn’t count out Davis just yet, yes the suspension cost him some money and leverage, but he’ll still have suitors. Remember Santonio Holmes was suspended for the first 4 or 5 games last year, still managed a $10 million a year contract (if he is disciplined again he’s likely suspended for a year as well). Vincent Jackson, held out and then was suspended last season yet they Franchised him for $11.4 million (and might do it again). Yes Davis might not sign a mega deal and there could be some escape clauses if he gets caught again, but it will be pretty pricey.
Steve Shoup - January 3, 2012
I would franchise Banks
64ShagginWagon - January 3, 2012
Hahahaha
Thats the most sensible idea I’ve heard all day
mbedner - January 3, 2012
Franchise = cut?
HogHunter - January 3, 2012
None of them are worth a fanchise tag..
LaRon- missed 16 games out of the last 32. Let him walk..
LFB- Too big of a cap hit. Give him a 2-3 yr deal around 18 mil with 9-12 guaranteed
Davis- 3 Yr deal w/ incentives out the arse.
Rex- he should be “code reded” in his sleep and never allowed in Redskin park again.
Diesel44 - January 3, 2012
How many more years does Fletcher have?
He has really slowed down.
Laron “Bust” Landry: Like any WR he tries to cover lets say ‘SEE YA!’
Keep Fred.
Elaw6 - January 3, 2012
Slowed down? He leads the league in tackles.
Parks Smith - January 3, 2012
he means he is not as fast on the field- which is true. the decline is noticeable from previous seasons
les boulez bomber - January 3, 2012
It is?
Parks Smith - January 3, 2012
I don't see it.
He ran circles around Rocky Mac and the fact that he lead the league in tackles shows you how quick he is to the ball.
Diesel44 - January 3, 2012
I get what you are saying but I hope we have a better barometer than this
Steve Shoup - January 3, 2012
Just hate Rocky and will get a dig on him any chance I get.
Henson, Blades and Rocky need to get into a convertible and do a Thelma and Louise off of a cliff.
Diesel44 - January 3, 2012
haha Henson, there's a name I haven't thought about in awhile
Parks Smith - January 3, 2012
no i'm with you
i just didn’t want Rocky McIntosh to be the benchmark of well anything
Steve Shoup - January 3, 2012
dont mistake what i am saying. he had a great year, is the only real leader on this team and deserves to be paid legitimately. i dont think franchise tag money but i dont think he will hold out for that
but he is definitely slower than in the past. do you really think a 37 year old man is as fast as he was at 32? his speed is more evident when he is in coverage- not running five to ten yards closing on a running back who may even be running towards him
les boulez bomber - January 3, 2012
Yes, he's living proof. Even if he did lose speed you can make it up with experience, angles, etc.
I’d like you a lot better if you became a fan of capitalization
Parks Smith - January 3, 2012
+1 on the capitalization
StephanHart - January 3, 2012
the only semi-red flags are
Fletcher took plays off this year, which is something he’s never done in the past. And his coverage didn’t seem as proficient as past years. We saw more wide open backs and TE’s who got YAC where in years past they’d be stopped dead in their tracks.
Neither is even close to a reason to move on from Fletcher, but they do bear watching.
Steve Shoup - January 3, 2012
Don't franchise Laron.
He’s ALMOST as overrated as DHall, but at least DHall is always healthy.
Let him walk, if his achilles doesn’t blow out before he gets to the parking lot.
iH8dallas - January 3, 2012 via mobile
haha
Steve Shoup - January 3, 2012
Man I wish DHall's contract was up
Parks Smith - January 3, 2012
He's an expensive one.
His tackling is getting better, especially against the run.
iH8dallas - January 3, 2012 via mobile
really you can cut him at any time
He’s scheduled to count $6.8 million against the cap, but his release fee is just $600K, so you’d save $6.2 million. I probably wouldn’t cut him this year, unless they have a deal in place for a replacement (Brandon Carr, Tyrell Thomas?). Instead I’d suffer through another year and sign and draft some young quality depth corners, cut Hall next season and make CB a priority then.
Steve Shoup - January 3, 2012
it would be one thing if laron would just get the damn surgery, especially considering the recovery time.
but he keeps delaying it and the more he waits the more i would consider definitely letting him walk.
parks, how did you like my capitalization?
Diesel44 - January 3, 2012
You moved down to #8 on the HH Power Poll Rankings
Parks Smith - January 3, 2012
Is there really such a poll??? haha
Because I’d like to know how many screen names Matt Flynn has for him to be the talk of every blog on SB Nation
ptowny - January 3, 2012
i'm just trying to stay in the top 15 for the hh fedex cup.
Diesel44 - January 3, 2012
We lost FedEx as a sponsor, it's now the Laughing Clown Malt Liquor Cup Presented by Black & Milds
Parks Smith - January 4, 2012
Wow, where can I buy a ballcap?
That would rock in burgundy and gold
Skins Fan '77 - January 4, 2012
You have to win
Parks Smith - January 4, 2012
Thanks now I won't sleep tonight
Fucking clowns
64ShagginWagon - January 4, 2012
Coooollll...
If you stare at it for five minutes, and then look at a blank wall,
you see Jim Zorn
Skins Fan '77 - January 4, 2012
haha +1
Parks Smith - January 4, 2012
I thought he did get the surgery?
Or was it just that he was advised to?
orakpophobia - January 4, 2012
that was his monkey's achilles
Parks Smith - January 4, 2012
Franchise Landry
Davis resign Fred Davis and Fletcher.
Laron can flat out ball. though there are injury concerns. He is on of the best playmaker on the defense.
Did no one learn from Carlos Rogers.
or Ryan Clark,
or Jason Campbell
Stop letting first round picks and our most talented players leave washington.
JeanBaptiste - January 4, 2012
So we should keep them...errr...just because?
Parks Smith - January 4, 2012
Do I live in the Twilight Zone?
Am I in some parallel universe where Laron Landry doesn’t suck and Jason Campbell doesn’t throw the ball one yard on 3rd & 8?
iH8dallas - January 4, 2012
Landry a year ago was considered to be one of the best strong safeties in the league.
Jason Campbell is a whole lot better then Rex Grossman.
JeanBaptiste - January 4, 2012
haha well done, maybe a bit harsh but still pretty funny
Steve Shoup - January 4, 2012
There seem to be alot of people on this site
That have forgotten that Rogers was dying to get out if DC. Couldn’t have kept him even if we wanted to. Besides he was tanking last year on purpose.
And Jason Campbell….. really? Do we have to go over this one again.
64ShagginWagon - January 4, 2012
These people?
Parks Smith - January 4, 2012
Does that really work
If you have to read all the posts?
Skins Fan '77 - January 4, 2012
London in Philly, please.
JimmyK - January 4, 2012 via mobile
Yea I've heard that London has wanted to play for a defensive mastermind like Juan Castillo for the longest time
Parks Smith - January 4, 2012
Dude… Kingsville High School… 1986-1989… Dynasty.
JimmyK - January 4, 2012
They were more known for the their "bend but don't break" defense
Parks Smith - January 4, 2012
Philly uses Linebackers?
