When Raheem Morris was hired by the Redskins one of the first thoughts that crossed my mind was, "hey, Ronde is a free agent this year". I thought about it for a second and then just kind of dismissed it. After all, Ronde Barber basically is the Tampa Buccaneers. Barber has spent all fifteen years of his career in Tampa, five of which he was a pro bowler. He's the franchise's all-time leader in interceptions and has been as solid as any player could be for any team.
But the connection keep popping up in my head:
Apparently I'm not as crazy as I thought, as now ESPN's Pat Yasinsaks is hinting at the same thing:
It's also possible Barber might want to continue playing, but a new coaching staff could decide to start fresh and give him the same treatment Derrick Brooks got in 2009 and let him walk. If that happens, don't be surprised if Barber ends up in Washington, where former Tampa Bay coach Raheem Morris is now coaching the secondary.

Smart money is on Barber retiring or staying in Tampa, but we can't dismiss the possibility of him in burgundy and gold just yet. If we fail to add a young corner via free agency or do not want to allocate resources to improving the secondary during the draft then why not join the Rent-A-Barber program? A secondary of Barber, Hall, Wilson is an instant upgrade and add some versatility. Also, is Barber a potential fit at safety, if need be?

Why would one person say yes to this let alone 6?
mbedner - February 1, 2012
I voted No as well.
This was from one of the Bucs last games of the season:
http://www.profootballfocus.com/blog/2011/12/23/three-to-focus-on-buccaneers-panthers-week-16/
Kevin Ewoldt - February 1, 2012
Oh...and....
Panthers won that game 48-16. They averaged 8.7 yards a carry on 31 carries. Not sure how Ronde did, but surely he missed 31 of those tackles.
Kevin Ewoldt - February 1, 2012
exactly, he's more of a cover two corner
man to man isn’t his strong suit, and considering the blitzes and cover 0 looks we run, he could be a liability…but the thought of him as a safety is intriguing
atark001 - February 1, 2012
I actually like it
This could help us focus on other positions this year to let us draft a CB higher next year, not to mention the guy is a class act.
Has he shown any signs of slowing up? Feel like he’s Tampa’s London Fletcher
travisjh86 - February 1, 2012
yea dude is a class act
and really intelligent, I remember one game last year the secondary coach got injured or was absent for some reason, and he was on the sidelines with the printouts going over them with the other DBs and coaching them up
atark001 - February 1, 2012
no no no no no no no no....
here is why. OLD, most of his career in the Cover 2 defense, made famous by Dungy in Tampa, and, oh yes, OLD.
jgibbsfan1 - February 1, 2012
exactly, he's played 15 years already
We don’’t need to go back to picking up guys who are at the end of their careers.
aFan4Life - February 2, 2012
add Ronde to the coaching
staff instead, as another DB coach to show DHall how to make an impact.
Big Spoon - February 2, 2012
sounds like
An old slow fat guy. We have one of those at qb alrdy
Al_CaPWNED - February 1, 2012 via mobile
So we're reforming the 2008 Bucs, oh yay.
Ike Hilliard, Ronde Barber, all we need is to drop some $ on Alstott.
Kevin Ewoldt - February 1, 2012
HE DIDN'T SCORE!
CarverM - February 1, 2012
No he didn't.
iH8dallas - February 1, 2012
...Rent-A-Barber? I laughed.
I don’t understand the logic behind renting some old guy for a year as what… a filler? He has clearly passed his prime and is a cover 2 system corner. It would be dumb to add him to the roster while we are in the process of building the team around a young foundation. Makes absolutely no sense and would be a waste of roster space. Just idiotic.
It’s almost like contradicting your emphasis on trading down the draft boards to acquire young talent that can contribute or even start right away.
xocnodnarb - February 1, 2012
Betcha he could still beat out Barnes even with his age
Bryan Black - February 1, 2012 via Android app
So add him just because he is a slight upgrade over KB?
xocnodnarb - February 2, 2012
slight?
Parks Smith - February 2, 2012
Sounds like a pretty reasonable candidate for a 3rd CB to me
Can’t be worse than Byron Westbrook
mmford10 - February 1, 2012
Coaches are rather high on BW…i think you meant to say Barnes.
Kevin Ewoldt - February 1, 2012
What is this?
Peyton Manning, then Ronde Barber.
There needs to be a PSA across the nation : “These are not the same Redskins! I repeat these are not the same Redskins!”
iH8dallas - February 1, 2012
I agree.
mbedner - February 1, 2012
Yea... they are worse!
Parks Smith - February 1, 2012
I want to connect some dots.
I was born in Roanoke, VA.
I love the Redskins.
I play the harmonica.
Could iH8dallas be a new member of the marching band, playing “Hail to the Redskins” on his harmonica?
Just read the tea leaves.
iH8dallas - February 1, 2012
We need a Bruce Allen connection. Didn’t you comb his chest hair?
Kevin Ewoldt - February 1, 2012
I trimmed his toenails. With my teeth.
iH8dallas - February 1, 2012
Oh wait.
My cousin works for a senator. Bruce Allen’s brother is a senator. BOOM!
iH8dallas - February 1, 2012
former senator
Parks Smith - February 1, 2012
Allen and Kaine are both projected to get 46% of the vote...
you never know. He could be senator again. Very likely. It probably will depend on how Obama does in VA, quite frankly.
mbedner - February 1, 2012
It actually depends on Hogs Haven. We're going to start talking politics everyday here.
Parks Smith - February 1, 2012
Man Hell Yeah!!!!
(I like politics)
iH8dallas - February 1, 2012
Not happening, I almost had to stop you and jbh babbling about welfare yesterday.
We obviously talk about a lot of things here, but politics is not one of them. Everyone yells at each other and it ends worse than a cut Brandon Banks post circa July, 2011.
Parks Smith - February 1, 2012
I was frankly surprised you didn't delete it.
mbedner - February 1, 2012
Its the offseason, stir crazy folks are given a little more of a leash, haha.
And it was basically just you, jbh, and iH8. jbh talks to himself half the time here anyways, so I figured he couldn’t get into to a political argument with himself. And h8 is h8.
Parks Smith - February 1, 2012
After hearing his views, I'm pretty sure that statement is like 97% false.
mbedner - February 1, 2012
I didn't say my inclination was correct, haha
Parks Smith - February 1, 2012
37 years old
He can hang out with Fletch. Other than that, no.
SAP_Pete - February 1, 2012
Really?
A 37 y/o CB who has played in a Tampa 2 system his entire career? That’s an option that close to 50% of the folks who responded to the poll are actually in favor of? How embarrassing. #SHM
Copious 1 - February 1, 2012
Are there really 58 morons that voted yes?
That’s insane.
iH8dallas - February 1, 2012
what if the tampa 2 system is coming here with Morris?
travisjh86 - February 1, 2012
So Morris is going to change the entire Defensive scheme. The same one that Shanahan hand picked and drafted pkayers for?
Copious 1 - February 1, 2012
most teams run some form of the Tampa 2 these days
and it doesn’t require changing from a 3-4
At this point the Tampa 2 is as generic as the “West Coast Offense”
Tampa 2 means two safeties high – which we do on a lot of defensive calls
smutsboy1 - February 1, 2012
But the bulk of what we do is press-man coverage or off-man coverage with multiple blitz packages involving safeties.
Ronde @ 37 y/o is not suited for man-to-man coverage because he will get burned frequently by the likes of Mike Wallace and more importantly DJax (twice a year).
Copious 1 - February 1, 2012
2 safeties high is just cover 2
the tampa 2 is slightly different, because the middle linebacker drops back to the deep middle portion of the field…but your point is taken, we do run the tampa 2 coverage sometimes (I see fletcher hauling ass down the middle of the field), but the thing is we don’t run it exclusively (or rather as much) like they used to do in tampa…my fear with barber is that when we blitz we run a lot of man (cover 0 for example), and I just don’t see him being able to stay on a WRs hips in man to man…but he is an amazing zone CB
atark001 - February 1, 2012
Well said. Agree
smutsboy1 - February 1, 2012
just talking about coverage assignments
travisjh86 - February 1, 2012
Am I the only one who doesn't think our secondary sucks?
with or w/o Roids Landry.
smutsboy1 - February 1, 2012
yes, yes you are.
mbedner - February 1, 2012
DeAngelo makes me angry.
Josh Wilson is a good player.
iH8dallas - February 1, 2012
DeAngelo is an ass, and is overpaid, but he's an above average starting NFL CB
which is more than I can say for Jammal Brown, our OL collectively, or our WR corps collectively, or our QB situation.
smutsboy1 - February 1, 2012
Exactly.
CarverM - February 1, 2012
it's fact
Our secondary baaalllllooooooowwss
travisjh86 - February 1, 2012
I mean, according to FO we have the 16th rated pass defense.
So no matter how bad one thinks the secondary is, I don’t see an argument that it’s anywhere near as urgent as most positions on the offensive side of the ball.
smutsboy1 - February 1, 2012
I agree
We have a lot more pressing needs, that’s why I think bringing in an experienced vet with our new secondary coach for a year on a cheap contract isn’t a bad idea. So we can focus on other positions of need
travisjh86 - February 1, 2012
No you are not
We have one good player… Wilson
Skins Fan '77 - February 1, 2012
Why are there so many "yes" votes?
Is he moving to Safety or something? Is he fast enough to cover that much field? I know other corners have in the past to help extend their playing days but they don’t always succeed.
mkjo - February 1, 2012
This is the silly season
Donnio1234 - February 1, 2012
I need someone who is voting yes to explain why.
Copious 1 - February 1, 2012
That would be ridiculously stupid.
TheDeepBall - February 1, 2012
Why does everyone yell and scream and threaten to burn down the city on free agent posts?
No one is suggesting Barber rather recognizing he’s a possible option and could fit here. Even the scenario I outlined stated if we didn’t sign a young FA CB and didn’t want to allocate draft resources. If that’s the case then why is it such a bad move? Like someone else said, could he be any worse than the Barnes/Westbrook/Buchanon combo?
No one said make this guy target #1, give him a ton of cash, and promote him as the savior. It would be a last ditch, depth move if anything.
Parks Smith - February 1, 2012
You could argue the same for signing Jamarcus, but I guarantee you won't be posting about that as an option.
Copious 1 - February 1, 2012
I'm not arguing anything that's the point.
And even if I was how is that remotely the same thing. 1) 37 year old, Hall of Famer 2) Fat, out of shape drug attic
Parks Smith - February 1, 2012
A drug attic?
Is that when you keep your pot in the very top section of your home?
iH8dallas - February 1, 2012
He meant addict
He went to Longwood, cut him some slack.
Copious 1 - February 1, 2012
auto correct, grammar policing always improves a message board, thanks!
Parks Smith - February 1, 2012
Hey, if we don't look out for each other, then who will?
iH8dallas - February 1, 2012
+1, you're the best
We can all be as educated as Copius clearly his alma mater must have ranked among the nation’s finest.
I don’t know what Simple Harmonic Motions have to do with the Ronde Barber poll.
Parks Smith - February 1, 2012
Good catch. We didn't specialize in "hash tags" my bad.
You’re luck I like you Parks or I would pee in your all of your shoes.
Copious 1 - February 1, 2012
I minored in Upper Decking, so I wouldn't start that war if I were you.
Parks Smith - February 1, 2012
Has anyone ever personally "upper decked" someone?
If so, please share the story.
iH8dallas - February 1, 2012
If you didn't upper deck a toilet in college then you don't deserve a degree.
Parks Smith - February 1, 2012
Most of my deviance was urine-related.
Although poop stories are funny.
iH8dallas - February 1, 2012
You seem like a guy that purposely loses a game of soggy biscuit.
Copious 1 - February 1, 2012 via Android app
So correction: Post not Argue
I think Jamarcus has more upside that Barber. You can rehab a drug problem and lose weight, but unless you are the Phoenix Suns, you can’t make an old player young.
Copious 1 - February 1, 2012
Oh yes you can
It is called human growth hormone
Skins Fan '77 - February 1, 2012
I didn't see where ESPN linked Russell to the Skins this year.
If they do then you will surely see a post. Thanks for your contributions.
Parks Smith - February 1, 2012
What are we supposed to say about a post talking about a 37 y/o cornerback?
Brilliant idea? Why didn’t I think of this?
iH8dallas - February 1, 2012
The Redskins are where old players come to retire, kind of like the Florida of the NFL
Obey - February 1, 2012
isnt he older then raheem morris?
munson21502 - February 1, 2012
So is free agent linebacker London Fletcher. DON'T SIGN THAT GUY!
Parks Smith - February 1, 2012
It really depends on what role he’d be looking at. If he wants to make a lot of money and play as a top corner for a team pass on him for sure but if he’s not looking for too much money and is willing to play spot duty and be a mentor and good influence on the younger players why not bring him in?
Adi C - February 1, 2012
This
If he could get Meangelo to keep his head on straight, it would be worth it right there.
A note on PFF, btw – color me highly skeptical about the quality and reliability of their information. When you look into their methodology, it involves their people breaking down the film of ever play and grading the players. Which would be great if we knew who their people were, what their qualifications are, how uniform the grading standards are, etc. But we don’t, and they aren’t telling. So they get these lovely charts and numbers that give it a faux-objective and scientific look, but at it’s core they are as subjective as any anonymous poster on a blog.
d_c_guy - February 1, 2012
i agree with adi c too
munson21502 - February 2, 2012
It’s intriguing at safety (or as a depth corner). Also for the leadership aspect and to help the new secondary coach get the hearts and minds. I say give him something decent as an offer and/but be willing to take the (probably small and we have room for it) cap hit if you have to cut him.
IOW, hell yes. We need to be scheming and working for every edge. not turning our nose up and stuff and suck for Lucking for the next decade. Celler dwellers have tried that approach and not had it work and then just sucked and sucked. Look at the Giants. Two trips to the show in the last 4 years and neither one from being world beaters, but just hanging in there and barely making the playoffs.
There are 32 teams in the league and they all want to win…and only a few can really ever be dominant. And there is no magic road to that. Parity is the rule…and we need to hang in there and try to WIN!!!!
