Redskins Are $47 Million Under the Cap. Some Things That Can Buy...

Photo

John Clayton of ESPN just tallied the new salary cap numbers given all the new CBA rules:

One of the new parts of the NFL collective bargaining agreement is the ability of teams to roll over remaining cap room into the next season. The 2011 season finished with $320 million of remaining cap room...Dan Snyder of the Washington Redskins has plenty of room to get quarterback and receiver help, thanks to $47.56 million of cap space.

The Chiefs, Benglals, and Bucs are slightly over $60mil. The Giants are currently $7.3 mil over the cap. So, exactly how much is $47.56 mil? Here's an idea:

OK, so here are some real NFL players $46 mil can buy:

Star-divide

  • 1 London Fletcher. His first contract with the Redskins was 5 years, $25 million, including $10.5m in bonuses. I'd expect that same price range with a 3-year deal and decent bonus where the final two years don't hurt the Skins if Fletcher needs to be cut for whatever reasons.
  • 1 Vincent Jackson - Mike Lombardi expects VJax is looking for a 5-year, $50 mil deal. I think that's very high given VJax just turned 29 and has suspension red flags.
  • 1 Free Agent QB
  • 1 top Corner Back
Free agency is going to be awesome people. Bruce Allen introducing all of our new free agents with Scarlett Johansson on their sides...hail yeah!

I'll take one of each:

OG – Grubbs or Nicks
WR – Bowe or D Jax(Manningham if we strike out)
QB – Stanton
OT – Gaither

Our guys:
Monty(as a reserve)
Fletch
Landry
Davis
Fox(as depth)

Guys I wouldn’t pay a penny to have back:
Rex
McIntosh(let him go play WILL in a 4-3)
Locklear(he was beaten out by an undrafted rookie)

I'd say no to Gaither

We have one too many injured OTs as it is.

also it sounds like the Chargers are going hard after him
That is a relief.
you can def. see why they just cut McNeil and the Chargers other tackle Clary apparently had a bet going with Jamaal Brown to see what RT could be worse last season
forget watch chargers game i watched last year

but wow philip rivers was on his back more then britney spears over the last few years. their o-line play made our look like a pro bowl team.

it def. wasn't one when Gaither was playing since he didn't give up a single sack

but i think i watched that game as well, they had like 2 linemen go out with injury and another one was already out for that week. San Diego is hurting along the line which is why I’m guessing the Chargers try to re-sign Gaither before FA starts

After missing curfew and being a backup, yea, impossible to see Rocky coming back. I think we can find someone better than Fox. He was a Lou Spanos guy. I agree with bedner, no Gaither.

Not sure why you like Stanton…he has Grossman TD-INT ratios.

I like Stanton in a backup role

and would greatly prefer him to Rex.

Honestly Kev, I thought Gaither played very well after he was picked up in San Diego last year. He’s young, strong and mobile, and could be a good plug-and-play type OT, in a very weak market. I’d also imagine an incentive laden contract would fit him best(especially considering the past injuries). San Diego runs a lot of ZBS, where the Chiefs were more of a power scheme. He did well in SanDiego, and I think he could give us some good years. He’d be much cheaper than Brown, and could give Willie Smith a chance to develop properly.

thanks, good insight

I admittedly didn’t follow him much last year….the sight of Norv is too much for me.

I'm with you

I can’t stand to even look at Norv even though I’ve been told he’s a nice guy

Barnes from the Raiders is a better fit and less risky injury wise

We really need to start getting some continuity on the line, it is starting to become critical

Talent wise, Gaither is a much better OT than Barnes
Talent only counts if you can stay on the field
He stayed healthy for the Chargers
For what? 5 Games?
For as many games as he was with them for
Say what you want about him

but he made a huge difference to that Chargers offense

I like Jared Gaither he is a local kid from PG County Md

he is only 25 years old and I dont forsee him costing a ton of money. I really think he would be a good signing, he can play both RT and LT, and can move it would be a good addition to the O-line

he's gonna cost a good chunk

it might not be $10 million a year plus like most top tackles, but I think he’ll get a good amount (though probably a lower guarantee)

I dont think he will get that much

but he is still young and could put him on that Right side to have bookends, i would have to see what the actual price tag was but i would love to have the guy

I don't think he'll get that much either

I definitly see an incentive laden contract, with a low guarentee. This guy was just outright released by the Chiefs. Teams will be cautious with him.

I'll say the average will be in the $6 million range
I would say he'll be under 6

IMO, 4.5-5

he's def. tough to predict, but i get the feeling he'll get paid pretty well

its a thin tackle market and a ton of teams need tackles

Wasn't he unhappy to be switched to the right side with the Ravens?

I’d expect him to end up somewhere that’s going to play (and pay) him as a LT

I'm not

Advocating or decrying this move but, if we did sign him, I wouldn’t have any problem putting the LT spot up for competition. I think Baltimore moved Oher to LT because they felt pressure do to his draft spot. They regretted it afterwards. I wouldn’t wanna limit our potential just because one player doesn’t play up to his draft status.

No Scarlett Johansson dates on your list I see. Next year I’ll make sure to include the cost for dates with Justin Bieber and Taylor Lautner.

haha

I’m a Rachel(Glee) fan

I'll never understand your bizarre obsession with that show lol
Actually, I don't quite understand it either

I made fun of it when it first came out, now I love it. You have every taboo covered in Glee. You have interracial relationships, teen pregnancy, Teen marriage, gay and lesbian couples, teachers sleeping with students, two gat fathers raising a teenage daughter, bullies coming out of the closet, and mentally retarded girls falling in loved with handicapped students. Now, you get to see a bi-sexual coach get pregnant from a sperm doner, who is thought to be a current teacher………………fasinating!

Good episode last night. Mercedes did "I Will Always Love You" justice.

The bully trying to get with Kurt…scandalous.

I thought Jeff Goldbloom was good as well.

Yeah, she killed that

gotta go download

and...............American Idol tonight!

Hell Week conclusion!

I haven't been into Idol that much this season.

I watched a lot last year because Scotty lived one county over from me, but with Simon gone…meh.

Yeah, but to watch all those people banging out on the previews

looks funny as hell. Plus, there are some freakin hotties

There are a lot of hotties.

Does Steven Tyler still think every singer is the best thing since sliced bread?

Why do I feel like the straightest man in the world after reading this back and forth?
Real men watch Glee.
Just watch it once

you’ll see what we mean. Were both married, and we still like it.

My sister in law

Was married for 12 years. To a man. She got divorced 3 years ago and remarried. A woman.

What are you implying?
Who me?

I’m not implying anything. Just wanted to give you all a look into my (extended) family environment.
By the way, my sister in law watches Glee. Her, eh, spouse doesn’t. Guess which one wears the pants.

haha

was just busting your chops man

Of course

plus he curses all damn show……..it’s funny as shit

fascinating? in a train wreck kind of way I presume?
Hmmmm.....

“You have interracial relationships, teen pregnancy, Teen marriage, gay and lesbian couples, teachers sleeping with students, two gat fathers raising a teenage daughter, bullies coming out of the closet, and mentally retarded girls falling in loved with handicapped students. I thought that’s why we had internet porn.

Here we go again
Dummest comment I have ever heard you make Tiller

You want drew stanton but wont pay a penny to rex….how out landish is that. As much Rec kills us with his picks….he still moves the ball and gives us a fighting chance to win every game. And whats even morr valuable is he knows the offense like the back of his hand. Get real dude…and Bowe or D Jax over V Jax is rediculous….he is worth every penny of 50 mil and can do everything megatron can do plus he can go across the middle. Any real football fanatic would know he was underused in San Diego and wasnt treated like a true number 1,

Plus Craig Steltz and except Demetrius Bell over Gaither
Bell is way overrated
I endorse this message

Sage Rosenfels…he’s coming home, coming home. Tell the world he’s coming home

When it comes to WR i would bypass the first 7 big contract guys

This is a pretty deep WR class in my opinion, and instead of breaking the bank for one headliner you could put together a solid recieving core similar to what greenbay has. I would target guys like Pierre Garcon, Robert Meachem, Mario Manningham, Early Doucet, Robert Royal and Steve Smith(the other steve smith,nyg/phil, if healthy). For the same price you would pay a D.Bowe or V-Jax, you could get a combination of any 2 or 3 of these guys and have a solid recieving core to go along with moss, gaffney, hankerson, and paul.

yeah i'd avoid the big name receivers this year as well
ied drop gaffney. he is a rex wr
eddie royal?
Agree

I wouldn’t mind taking a flyer on Meachem at all. I think he’ll do better without having to sit behind all that talent.

On the O-line i like Monty but would target Myers from Houston
He 30, going on 31

I realize it’s not old, but it doesn’t really fit in with the new “rebuild”. I rather see a 3rd round pick used on a yound center in the draft.

If the RGIII

thing does not happen, I’d love to move down and grab Konz.

I wouldn't grab Konz in the 1st

I like some of the later round guys better. If we move back in the 1st, I hope it’s for a much needed skill position.

I view Konz

as one of the few cant miss guys out there this year

Normally I’d agree, but if he’s deemed healthy, I’d take him for a couple seasons at a reasonable rate ($3M per?)

Veteran centers can be effective and he might be good cost effectiveness for us (provided we use a 1st or 2nd on another OL position this year)

Yeah, I guess it would really depend on what else we have planned in FA

If we picked up a guard like Nicks, I would stay away from Myers. If we missed on a stud guard, I would look to Myers as an upgrade to Monty then.

last year we signed a same aged Jamaal Brown to a 5 year deal, despite the fact that he struggled mightily, has a history of injuries, and didn't really fit into the system

Myers is the exact opposite on every count. Plus his knowledge of the system would be paramount (in general) if you want to get RGIII.

I dont think there is a huge need to go get a FA Center

you have Monty on the roster, and List can play center as well, and i think you can draft a guy later in the draft to develop in a year or two

well Monty is a free agent so you will have to spend some (less than Myers) to resign him
I am not totally opposed to getting Myers but it is not my priority

if i signed Myers then I would not bring back Monty

I would definitly bring back Monty

as he knows our system, and can back up both guard and center – and he’s going to be affordable.

Think it depends

On Licht’s health. If they sign a Grubbs/Nicks and Myers, not sure we need to keep Monty.

Licht would be a nice reserve too
Question: What makes Myers better than Monty?
Great Success
I thought it was

that he doesn’t end up on his back at the QB’s feet every other play

thats part of it too haha
haha to seriously answer your question

he doesn’t get pushed back as much, he’s a devastating run blocker that is perfect for the ZBS. Constantly gets to the 2nd level and opens up big holes.

Monty is just a lesser version of that, he’s not as quick, consistent or smart (probably more of knowledge of the system)

Agree

Monty is not that good of an athlete.

yeah, Tiller this is a guy we are in complete agreement on

he’s a passable starter, but basically he’s a journeyman type

but he's a hometown kid

I won’t be upset if he’s our center next season but I also wouldn’t mind him being a depth guy, but keep him around! Might not be athletic, but he’s Cheap, knows the system and can execute it well enough to start.

and at the right price I don't have a problem with him, esp. in a depth role
I like him a lot in a depth role
in that case let's get Myers!
I don't hate the idea of Myers

I just don’t love it. If he were 27, then I’d like it a lot more.

okay but what does the age matter?

So what that he might not be here in 5 or 6 years, for the next 3 or 4 he should be dominant. And i think his ability to help teach the system to both our current line and any new guys is invaluable.

I think I'd rather go with a drafted rookie

over the older vet. JMO

You don't think that watching your center getting blown into the backfield

Is a problem? Admittedly, it doesn’t happen has often as it did with his predecessor; but we play some of the best defensive lines in football twice a year. And we do not have good size because of our emphasis on quicker/technique lineman.
I am not saying we have to have elite talent all along the line, but we have very few good players (let me change that to one and a half good players)

We actually had good size last year with this lineup:

TW – 318
Hurt – 320
Monty – 310
Chester – 315
Brown – 320

I agree with you there

But the devil is in the details… how many snaps did we actually have that exact line up?
Going into the future, what are the chances of having that one line up?
We need to put together five players who have a reasonable chance of playing 2 to 3 seasons together… continuity is very important and it does not seem to me that we are setting ourselves up for success–we always seem to be scrambling to put together the line.

also talent plays

just b/c Brown has nice size, doesn’t mean much if he can’t get to his man

If Brown makes the roster

We are in serious trouble. If Kyle Shanahan can’t see how bad we are at right tackle, then he goes back to coaching quarterbacks… I’m serious

Monty is a good center. What the hell is wrong with you people?

I’d say “decent”

I would not consider him “good” or top-12 or so.

middle of the road

not a liability.

I agree, and its not like he's been playing alongside pro bowlers either.

Improve the guard position, get some continuity going, and Monty’s play will not be an issue.

He's average

better as a back-up than a starter.

Really? He was statistically our best lineman this year...
I'll never get it. Why is it that everytime we get a good player, Skins fans want to dump them for a free agent?

It’s crazy.

I don't want to dum him

I want him back as a reserve who can back-up at 3 different positions – now that’s value

If Montgomery hit the free market he would be picked up quickly.
maybe

just because of the lack of C’s out there, but he’s not going to get paid like a top one

agreed, probably about $3 million a year for 3 or 4 years
That is a pretty low bar, there is very little talent on the offensive side of the ball
There is a lot more to look at than statistics.

Stats do very little in justifying the worth of a linemen.

FWIW he was always Dan Graziano's All-Division Center.
and if Rex Grossman played in a division with Blaine Gabbert, Sam Bradford, and Curtis Painter he'd likely win the top QB award
Not sure thats a division I'd wanna watch haha
that's not exactly a ringing endorsement
Scarlett Johansson date

estimated at 40,517/per …ouch

True but we have enough picks and cap room to make both moves if need be
With the cap room and amount of picks we have we can make moves in free agency

And solidy depth in the draft with extra picks in the 4th and 6th rounds

I will never not love that Danny photo

did someone on this site make it?

PlAN

OL – Nicks or Grubbs.
WR – Bowe/ Trade for Marshall
QB – Griffin’s lil contract.
CB – Carr, Grimes.

touhdown

I may be in the minority but i would not seek to get a big name WR this year

like Bowe, Vjax, Colston. But i would like to add a burner to get deep down the field in the draft or Free Agency like Meachum, or D jax.

D-Jax is pretty big name

he’s going to get about as much as Bowe

sign Peyton and Brees to back up Griffin

Give $45 mil to Drew Brees with a $100 million signing bonus... PROBLEM SOLVED
I would not want Drew Brees if he was available

it is time for Shanahan to raise his own QB and start fresh cause the team is a young team not the time for a Veteran FA QB to lead the team

I didn't realize that Brees was 33, thought he was a little young.

I’m dropping the signing bonus down to $93 mil

I hope Peyton Manning

enjoys his $47mil retirement package as he gets injured week one…

How is it 2 months ago

Everybody was appalled at the idea of bringing in Gaither when he was cut by the Chiefs and now everybody wants to bring him in as a FA.

I wasn't

I was hoping we claimed him, and traded for Curry last year(Raiders got him for a 7th, and conditional 5th in 2013)

I would of loved to take that deal for Curry

How did he fair for the Raiders?

He was ok

he came on more towards the end of the season.

I wanted Gaither, so...not everybody was against it.
yeah i argued for Gaither, but to answer your question

2 months ago most people assumed we’d draft Matt Barkley in the 1st and grab a tackle in the 2nd. Now they need to scramble to find one via free agency.

I say we call Matt Barkley's name anyways, what's the worst that could happen.
Or draft RG3, as Barkley could have assended to the #2 QB
So out of curiousity...

am I correct in thinking that if we start to stack our offense with WR and O-line in FA that it is a sign that they may be trading up? Opinions? My thinking is that if they use FA to strengthen our offensive weapons and protection that they will be looking to trading up to RG3. Is that a solid prediction on my part or is that crazy? What can certain types of scenarios and other movements in FA tell us about our plans at QB?

Yes, you would be correct
Man if that happens, then ill be keeping a close eye on cleveland leading up to the draft hah.
The ads on this site have become really creepy lately

No I’m not in the market for Russian mail order brides or Arab women. Get with it SB nation marketing department!

damn you keep getting my ads
Marketing department is spot on, have you paid attention to our readers? Business is probably booming for these sponsors b/c of HH
All thanks to iH8
You sure you aren't?

I haven’t seen those ads

I'll take the 1160 dates with Sarlett Johnasson!
How about spending that $47 mill on a familiar face that just became a FA?

Albert Haynesworth

Apparently you didn't get too far in the article
1 Albert Haynesworth guaranteed contract
just making note that it's possible for us to make that mistake again

since he’s been released

or signing somone else with a similar work ethic and attitude (Vincent Jackson / Randy Moss)
what's wrong with VJax?

He’s in Grade-A shape and contributes heavily on the field. He made some dumb decisions, but if the contract is right (bonuses for no law run-ins), he could work out.

he's also a Moss/Owens type of me first player who argues with teammates, opponents, coaches and officials alike
yes, he has an awful attitude - no need for that poison arround here
isn't he one DUI away from a year long suspension?
yes.
yet another reason to let him go elsewhere
we already have two that are a jay away from sitting for a year

why add another
