Mel Kiper's 2nd Mock Draft Has Redskins Taking Morris Claiborne

Mel Kiper just posted his second mock draft of the year:

1.) Andrew Luck - IND
2.) Justin Blackmon - STL
3.) Matt Kalil - MIN
4.) RG3 - CLE
5.) Trent Richarson - TAM
6.) Redskins....

Morris Claiborne, CB, LSU
Kiper: The Redskins are a team I could certainly see moving off this pick, but if the draft broke this way, the pick makes a lot of sense on both need and value. And obviously, what the Skins could do in free agency for their offense is something I'm considering. Tyrann Mathieu got the headlines at LSU, but the best cornerback on the team was Claiborne. He's the top corner in the draft, and while the Skins have offensive needs, they should also be willing to draft best available when possible because the roster needs more talent, period. While not quite the athlete, Claiborne is actually a better pure cover corner than Patrick Peterson, the No. 5 overall pick from last year.

Claiborne is listed at 6'0", 185 pounds.

I don't think Trent Richardson will go to Tampa.
Yeah I'm with you

It just doesn’t really make sense, but that seems to be the popular pick these days

I agree. Not sure why people keep mocking him there.

The Bucs are a bad team and have multiple needs. Blount is one of the few positives on offense for them outside of Freeman. They need to get Freeman protected and give him some receivers to get open before they worry about upgrading running back.

I agree

I think they could take him just because he is an explosive runner. He would be an upgrade for them and he would take a lot of pressure off of Feeman. I honestly think they will take Claiborne though. With Rhonde on the fence and Taquib looking at possible jail time then they should probably go corner.

I'd buy a Claiborne jersey.

Lockdown corner we need.

we wont take Claiborne

i think if we DONT move up to get RGIII, and if he doesnt fall to us at 6, this pick will, with almost total certainty be traded..
This will be exactly the same scenario we saw last year when we moved back out of our pick when there was no one we truly wanted, and the Jags wanted Gabbert.
Same thing this year, if the draft plays out this way.. Tell me the Pats wouldnt love to have a corner like Claiborne ? They also have 2 first round picks.
There will be other teams desperate to have the best corner in the draft

We DO need another corner. Barnes is disappointing and Westbrook is a special teamer. Thompson couldnt stay off the PS.. But we dont need a corner that badly

If forced to use the pick, my guess would be Shanahan takes the best OT left on the board. But, I still think we either get RGIII, or trade down

" we don't need a corner that badly "

We don’t need a great young corner " that badly" ? Of course we do. We need a lot of things, but CB is surely one of our needs. D Hall is grossly overrated. Barnes is improving, but he wouldn’t start on most NFL defenses. Nickelback at best. We BADLY do need a great young corner, sir.

?? Kolb to Browns, then Richardson in draft ??

Saw someone who mentioned that Kolb was the favorite of the Browns GM, and that if Arizona decides to part ways with Kolb, expect the Browns to make a strong play for him.

If so, expect the Browns to dump Hillis and take Richardson with their pick— that would open the door for RGIII ending up with the Redskins

I can live with that haha.
I can never get a good read on the Browns.

I hear so many things and the talk about RG3 and QB is not as big as the talk about Hillis and RB based on their SB nation site.

Only 1 player will be taken before we draft
Agreed.

I’m sticking to my prediction: RG3 in a St. Louis trade.

I'm just going to be honest...

I want him bad enough that I will find myself pissed if we don’t make the trade.

Mel Kiper is a gasbag.
rather have that CB that shut down blackmon in round 3

trade this pick to the pats or another needy team

I watched every snap Claiborne took at LSU, he's the real deal.

He moved to corner during training camp as a true freshman and was an immediate contributor, and then was a complete lockdown corner the next two years. This past year, nobody (and I mean nobody) threw on him. When they threw near him, it was an almost guaranteed pick. He’s not the pure athlete Patrick Peterson is, but nobody is. He’s one of the most fluid and natural cover corners I’ve ever seen.

On top of all that he made plays all year in the kicking and interception return game all year, and can be a game-changer at that spot immediately.

I’d rather trade up or down, but if we’re at six and he’s available, I’d take him in a heartbeat. He could be a mainstay in our defensive backfield for the next 10 years.

So you basically saying he Darryl Revis, not Champ Bailey.

Ummm

do you remember Stedman BDiley?

Great player…would love for him to be here…but Steady got him.

Claiborne and Blackmon are very worthy of the #6 pick, it’s just that neither position is an urgent need for us, IMO, the way OL & QB is.

How is WR not an urgent need?

I know we have guys that can “get by”, but no one stands out.

well i think you answered your own question, we don't have those guys that can 'get by' along the o-line

Also if we are franchising Davis, him and Cooley plus Helu out of the backfield can help keep our passing attack in the moderate department. We can’t make up for the lack of talent along the line (esp. if Davis is our TE).

Steve, I know you keep saying this with the O-Line

but to say those guys can’t get by is wrong. Our Oline, in the last 6 games of the season, consisting of, Smith, Hurt, Monty, Chester, and Brown/Palumbus paved the way for a 100 years rusher in each game, and averaged 87 yards more per game than the previous 10.

It does not diminish the need at WR, just because you feel we need upgrades on the O-Line. They are both needs, and I will argue that WR is an urgent one.

5 O-Linemn are in on every play. Most of the time 2 WR’s are in. I’m not arguing for a totally revamped WR corps, like you are arguing for a totally revamped O-Line. I just want a true #1 WR, and I don’t care if we get that guy in FA. Out of our 5 linemen, I’d like to see 2 new ones. At least 1 in FA and one(prob 2 in the draft). It doesn’t mean we have to put one above the other. They are both needs.

Couple of things

1. Our offensive line wasn’t exactly dominant in those games, and a lot of the credit goes to Royster/Helu. Also while the pass blocking improved with Brown missing time, we still gave up quite a few sacks/pressures/hits.

2. During those final 4 games we had over 250 yards passing 3 times and that was despite Hank, Cooley and Davis all being out. If you are making the argument that our O-line got by, than our passing attack was at a pro bowl level comparably.

3. You said it, 5 linemen are on every play, and they impact every play. A number 1 wideout is great, but he doesn’t really impact the running plays that much. For this reason a WR is less of a need and can wait a year if necessary, b/c until the line is fixed it won’t matter too much who the WR is.

Thats assuming Cooley doesnt have issues with dropped passes.
Over the last 4 years

Cooley has 13 drop passes in 274 targets

Davis has 16 drop passes in 185 targets

Wow, talk about stone hands!

8.6% seems high for someone who is profesionally paid to catch the ball.

you missed the 2nd half of that statement
How is WR not an urgent need?
I would be blah about this pick

I think it would made because we were forced to settle after striking out other fronts. Not that I would MIND having a good corner, but I am tired of drafting secondary players this high. It just hasn’t worked out for us, for many reasons. I also think that, while our CB situation isn’t perfect, it is still far from our biggest need. Not to mention the fact that great corners are over rated. A good pass rush trumps great CB play anyway of the week, and about 15 times on Sundays.

exactly, CB isn't a huge need. I'd rather see a trade back
Yup.

CB is one of the better units on our team, as much as I think Deangelo Hall is an asshole.

i don't know if I'd go that far

Wilson pretty good, but Hall is average at best, but he’s getting paid like an All-Pro. After that we have nothing. Now QB and OL are bigger needs, but CB or SS is right behind them.

His paycheck has nothing to do with it.

Talent-wise Hall/Wilson are way better than our OL, QB, WR and safeties.

Only units I’d put ahead of CB are LB, DL & RB

that i agree with

I just have trouble taking the pay out of it since the Redskins could find a far better corner for less money, and then said extra money can be spent on other needs.

but reducing money spent on corners isn’t a priority for this team right now.

adding talent is.

I really don't think this makes sense

I understand he is a great player, and CB is a position of need… but it is a lesser need than some others.

You have to compare the degree of upgrade that the drafted player will bring. Yes we want to get rid of Hall eventually, but we have him for another season. Hall to Claiborne is an upgrade, but not nearly to the degree that Jammal Brown to Riley Reiff would be.

We need more of a 2nd/3rd CB than a starter this season. Than next season after we are done with Hall we need a #1 corner.

I agree.

I think our defense succeeds much better this year if we address QB, WR, and O-line positions.

I wouldn't be pissed about it

but I think we have several other positions that need to be filled with the 6th pick more then CB. I would rather move back and grab more picks then go this route.

I'd be mad until he picked off Romo for six big ones in the 4th quarter.

Then I’d stalk him on facebook.

He'd look good in the

secondary across from Wilson. Will depend on what we do in free agency if it is the right move or not

+1

thats my only real issue. I think the Skins could land a guy like Carr/Grimes, making this pick far less of a need.

Claiborne is my #2 prospect for Redskins after Andrew Luck

Wouldn’t mind it at all.

oh darn...

a shutdown corner. I’d take Claiborne in a heartbeat.

I personally don’t think Blackmon is drafted in the top 3, JUST ME, and it’s not because I think someone could trade up to 2. Easy to go with team needs in mocks, but if AJ Green can fall to 4, who’s a better prospect than Blackmon, I don’t know if he’s valued as high as 2. If the Rams stay put, there’s no way they pass on Kalil for Blackmon. A shiny receiver is nice and all, but if Bradford remains behind that line, it doesn’t matter who he’s throwing to. I also don’t see the Vikings taking Blackmon, I think that’s where Claiborne lands. Minnesota’s offense wasn’t dreadful, and this draft is deep at receiver. Where they sucked was in their secondary, I can easily see Blackmon falling to Washington, and even there, I don’t think I’d prefer us taking him.

I personally am surprised that everyone’s so quick to say that the Rams will trade out of two. They’d be crazy not to take Kalil, as LT is probably their biggest need. I think Minnesota at 3 is the more likely trading partner for teams looking to move up, because they can maybe still get a Blackmon, Kirkpatrick, Reiff or maybe even Claiborne at 6, if we were the trading partner.

Of Course we would have already signed Matt Flynn and Dwayne Bowe
I'd love Claiborne at #6

We need help at that position in the worst way, so many 3 receiver sets we need to upgrade our corners. Also I’d be happy if we traded down as well just like last year, I’m so confident in Bruce Allen and Shanny front office right now that I’m happy with whatever direction we go in.

Would rather go with Rieff, but Claiborne could be great if we pick up a top OL in FA.
Trade up for RG3, Claiborne or Blackmon at 6, or trade the pick.

If we don’t take a QB in the 1st, we better have picked up Manning or Flynn. If not, Tannehill as our second pick is the only way to go. Either way, I think the Skins are in good shape for a promising off-season.

I'd take Claiborne over Blackmon

I’m not a fan over average sized WRs with average speed. He’ll have problems seperating from CBs in the NFL.

Jerry Rice says hello
Going for hyperbole here?

Rice is 1-2 inches taller and the GOAT.

let's draft janoris
Something between ho hum and dancing.

I’d like the pick, but have some regret at not being able to get RG3. On the flip side, if we traded up for RG3, I’d have some regret at the picks we traded away. I’m just not going to get too carried away one way or the other. Cautiously pleased is better than blindly ecstatic. That’s what she said.

Who did he give to GB?

Nvm.

Harrison Smith? WTH?

If we are drafting for the long term this is a good pick

I’m only ho hum about it because it means we didn’t address our desperate need at QB. So our defense improves…big deal when our offense is so horrible because of our current QBs.

Another top 5 pick used on defense

I really feel like that would be a waste, and a repeat of so many mistakes of old drafts.

you mean Arrington and Sean Taylor?
Arrington didn't last long so in a way it was a waste
our defense has been good for the last decade. you know why?

it’s where most of our first round picks go.

our offense has been bad for a decade. the reasons are the opposite.

Claiborne is good...

But I still want us to trade up for RG3.
