If free agency doesn't produce the Redskins' next starting quarterback, then the draft definitely will. They won't be able to trade with Indianapolis for the No. 1 pick -- and Andrew Luck. They might not be able to get Baylor's Robert Griffin III either. That means Texas A&M's Ryan Tannehill is a possibility.

Now Tannehill is missing the combine
not good………………..the athletes Pro Days are always overrated, so he better do something to have an absolutely magical one
Tiller56 - February 16, 2012
Seriously Dude!
If our FO was deciding to lean towards not trading up then why is it that every prospect (Barkley and now Tannehill) is making it harder to evaluate or pursue them?? Annoying!!
Jpage0024 - February 16, 2012
I know
now you are seeing guys like Osweiler moving up into first round consideration. Unbelievable. It’s solely out of desperation. Osweiler is a hot mess at QB. Maybe even more raw than Tannehill.
Tiller56 - February 16, 2012
Definitely a project
But a project like Osweiler is really intriguing. If we could sign a decent FA to a three year deal, a guy like that would look really good as a developmental guy on the roster. I’d still want to move up in one of the next two drafts to secure a primo prospect, but a guy like Osweiler could be our Whitehurst or Shaub, getting us great return down the road.
But not in the first damn round!
tuckwell - February 16, 2012 via iPhone app
Yeah but he's got the strongest arm in this draft
ENsDad27 - February 16, 2012
There's a slight upside...
If our scouting department & coaching staff feel confident enough about his ability based off the film, I’m not worried about him missing the combine. Tannehill not participating could cause him to fall to the 2nd round; making him a solid pick for us at this point. (assuming we don’t trade up for RG3). Personally, I want us to trade up for Griffin.
bneven - February 16, 2012
Not true. Tebow didn’t throw at the combine and he was a horrible QB prospect….his Pro Day drew media like the combine, he impressed, and snuck in first round. I think Tanny can still do well since the QB class is so weak behind Luck/RG3.
Kevin Ewoldt - February 16, 2012
Overrated in the sense that
they are in their own comfort zone, throwing to their own receivers, and running scripted plays from their own system. Did you happen to notice that most of the athletes at their pro day run a better .40 time than at the combine? Think this is coincidence? The combine is a pressure situation, and it is competitive. The pro day is a relaxed environment of the prospects choosing, that is designed to bring out the strengths of said QB prospects. See Jamarcus Russell.
Tiller56 - February 16, 2012
In this case the ProDay is not over-rated
Any coach will tell you that they make their draft pick decisions 99% based on film. The Pro Day will only be to see how Tanny’s strength is throwing off that foot etc. How he runs….is healed, etc.
Kevin Ewoldt - February 16, 2012
During his pro day
they will want to see if he has the ability to drive the football, and make NFL type throws. If he looks poor in this area, it could hurt him, as this is a question some scouts have about him.
Tiller56 - February 16, 2012
Well then
Considering his film is far from overwealming, does this mean he’ll drop to the 3rd round?
Tiller56 - February 16, 2012
Since the rest of the QB class stinks, he’ll get over-valued like Ponder and Gabbert did last year.
Kevin Ewoldt - February 16, 2012
Not sure they were really over valued
Gabbert, yeah, he looks like he’s not gonna make it. Ponder though showed the intelligence and guts it’s going to take to bring that Viking ship around, and a far more live arm than most projected. If they’ll protect him, he might end up having been a steal in retrospect, but for value at the time I think he acquitted himself well.
tuckwell - February 16, 2012 via iPhone app
Completely agree
& I still wish he was wearing B&G.
ENsDad27 - February 16, 2012
Gruden is going to talk even more on MNF?
I might have to just watch the games muted. I can’t believe they pulled Jaworski – he was the only guy worth listening to.
aFan4Life - February 16, 2012
Yea, I agree
I do like Mike Tirico though…he’s that good where he could do the entire broadcast himself. He knows everything in and out.
Kevin Ewoldt - February 16, 2012
yeah, he is good but you really need more than 1 voice

In my opinion...
I think we seriously can’t be looking at Peyton with this type of news popping up every couple weeks with his neck. I’m not excited in the least about Peyton potentially being here and I think that maybe the idea is that if Peyton even has one thought of coming here (which I highly doubt) that maybe Mike and Bruce can scare him away with their (fake) wide creepy smiles of pretend excitement as long as some other teams get the impression that we are seriously considering him. Every time I go to Boscovs I notice that the only jersey on the racks is good ole’ number 5 and it makes me think about the idea of Peyton being a redskin and it makes me shutter.
Jpage0024 - February 16, 2012
to be fair, when the McNabb trade rumors surfaced I laughed those off as well.
and we see what happened
smutsboy1 - February 16, 2012
True.
But I think that put Shanny and Allen in a position where they know that investing in Peyton as having him injured and out, gives them no breathing room. If they invest in a younger prospect they can expect some breathing room for molding a new NFL rookie into a powerhouse. With RG3 Snyder should be expected to give some leeway to mistakes and steps needed to mold him. With Peyton, if you don’t have a playoff run or at least get close, then you can expect no leeway from Snyder. I think it’s in their best interest to invest in RG3 or at the very least a younger prospect. Win now thinking in DC kills our win record. but you’re right…. it is still very much DC haha.
Jpage0024 - February 16, 2012
I bet we are
As much as I cringe to think so, with our qb situation our team has got to be looking at everything. Manning isn’t the most terrible choice we could make but he isn’t a good one. Of course a lot remains to be seen if his arm strength comes back and the nerves regenerate enough. If mannings healthy I’m sure the skins will look real hard at him.
I have to hope that rgIII is the first choice if they can get him without trading 2 drafts worth of picks. One thing seems certain, the qb situation will be addressed some how.
Al_CaPWNED - February 16, 2012
Yeah I mean they probably are looking at him...
But looking at him and considering him are two different things. I have to imagine that every report that comes out regarding his neck makes it less and less likely that they are considering him, though they may be looking at him and checking in on his status. I also think a healthy Peyton could care less about coming to DC. Were not quite one guy away enough. And Controlling the offense is his job not Kyles. I just don’t see it happening. If he comes here it’s going to be hard for me to be excited about 2012. Going for a young prospect will have me buying tickets. But yeah… it’s DC, so I’m probably wrong haha.
Jpage0024 - February 16, 2012
From the Russell article on Mayock...
“For anybody that doubts Mike Shanahan and Bruce Allen’s commitment to getting higher character guys and less trouble-makers, you will see a major step towards fixing that in the next 24 hours….Stay tuned.”
The only two troublemakers that come to mind are Fred and Trent. It would be no huge surprise if we didn’t bring back Fred, but since he’s a free agent, there’s no real way to show that in the next 24 hours, outside of saying “We’re not signing Fred.” Trent is basically impossible to deal with his contract (I think), and we’re not cutting him. So if we’re not getting rid of “trouble-makers,” maybe we’re acquiring a “high character guy.” London resigning, maybe?
Reedskin - February 16, 2012
There announcing they
are not going to resign Albert.
Redskin44 - February 16, 2012
Thank God for that.
I would love it so much if nobody signed him. Not gonna happen, but I’d love it.
Reedskin - February 16, 2012
Where did you read that?
And what does that even mean?
mbedner - February 16, 2012
I read it in the article that I stated in the headline (Russell's on Mayock)
I don’t know what it means. That’s what I’m trying to discuss and/or figure out.
Reedskin - February 16, 2012
London Fletcher is my $.
Kevin Ewoldt - February 16, 2012
Remember when Mike Shanahan brought in repeated woman abuser Michael Pittman to speak to the RBs?
Shanahan’s dedication to character apparently only extends to current players, or doesn’t include violence against women.
Just saying, this is a blemish on Shanahan’s record that shouldn’t be ignored.
smutsboy1 - February 16, 2012
I'm not saying Shanny's track record completely precludes signing players of questionable character.
It just sounded like Russell was hinting at something happening today, with the clue that it would imrove the overall character of the team.
Reedskin - February 16, 2012
Picking Character over Talent = LOSER
We all want both but in the end talent wins games.
jmpalomo - February 17, 2012 via Android app
there are plenty of players with both character and talent
so picking no character guys = loser.
aFan4Life - February 17, 2012
Seriously, I'm not making any argument for/against...
any sort of strategy regarding the balance of character vs. talent. I was just stating the quote and speculating as to what move Russell was hinting at. Turns out it was the Phillip Daniels hiring.
