I'd much rather get Meachem than Colston.
iH8dallas - February 20, 2012
Not Me
Colston, although not a burner, offers great height, and good hands, both of which can be a red zone weapon. He’s also a very humble guy, and from everything I’ve read, a very hard worker, and great locker room guy
Tiller56 - February 20, 2012
He's also 29.
iH8dallas - February 20, 2012
So is VJax
Tiller56 - February 20, 2012
Colston is the big physical guy that we need
BUT, like iH8dallas said, I don’t want any part of paying big bucks to a 29 year old.
Ohio Redskins - February 20, 2012
So then
Bowe, who very well may be franchised, is our only option
Tiller56 - February 20, 2012
I seriously think Stevie Johnson is going to hit the open market...
He and Bowe are my prime choices if we got for a top tier guy
ptowny - February 20, 2012
Bowe and Styles
Should be the only FA “studs” we consider bringing in to be the man.
Notice the emphasis on “studs” because I’m not against bringing others in to be WR 3/4s but these are the only legit #1s I think we should target.
Ohio Redskins - February 20, 2012
Well
we should know very soon if Bowe is going to be franchised; possibly today
Tiller56 - February 20, 2012
I think that is VERY likely...
PFT is reporting the Stanford Routt is ready to sign with a team TODAY, speculating that it will be KC, letting Carr leave and making Bowe the “Franchise”…
jgibbsfan1 - February 20, 2012
Are we liking Carr?
Not sure I’m down with him, but some have talked him over Hall.
Tiller56 - February 20, 2012
Carr is better for a zone scheme.
Copious 1 - February 20, 2012 via Android app
Steve Johnson is already in contract talks with the Bills
so I don’t think they’re going to let him go.
aFan4Life - February 21, 2012
plenty of receivers play well into their 30's, esp. those that don't use speed as the best part of their game
Steve Shoup - February 20, 2012
that's a good point
plus it seems historically Shanahan is a bit deferential to older receivers. Sticking with Rod Smith and Ed McCaffery come to mind. Giving Jerry Rice a shot in his 40s, and the string of veteran WRs he’s brought in here. It seems WR is a position that he likes experience at, and having a refined player at the position (someone who can run crisp routes, study hard, etc.). It’ll be interesting to see who we go with at that position.
atark001 - February 20, 2012
i think you said it
Shanny’s system is so predicated on timing that he likes guys who know how to run routes and get open.
Steve Shoup - February 20, 2012
wasn't Gaffney right at 30...
or just over? Not that he was targeted by Shanny, just making the “over 30” point….
jgibbsfan1 - February 20, 2012
yeah Gaffney was 30 last year
i also find it funny that most people don’t want Colston b/c he’s too old, but want Vincent Jackson who is 6 months older.
Steve Shoup - February 20, 2012
that is why I DON'T think VJax will end up here...
(Tampa Bay possibly). My concern with Colston has more to do with his previous surgeries, health.
I would prefer drafting a WR in 3rd round or lower, since the class is extremely deep…
jgibbsfan1 - February 20, 2012
honestly i think the health thing might be a little overblown
he’s never played in fewer than 11 games in a season and has played in 14 or more games 5 of his 6 years. If anything I think it works in the Skins favor as it help keeps him from getting a mega-deal, or might scare away some other teams.
Steve Shoup - February 20, 2012
good enough for me...
a nice possesion guy would be wonderful…
jgibbsfan1 - February 20, 2012
exactly
he might not be the fastest, but he gets open and catches the ball

iH8dallas - February 20, 2012
Has he been back here at all?
CJHutch - February 20, 2012
no
Tiller56 - February 20, 2012
Too bad
I don’t think he was a dishonest guy at all. Whatever that whole thing was about, it seems the outcome chased him away from a “place” he enjoyed.
CJHutch - February 20, 2012
he'll be back...
i’m sure he just needs the dust to settle, or he will get a new screen name
ptowny - February 20, 2012
He's fine
I talked to him. He’ll be back
Tiller56 - February 20, 2012

CJHutch - February 20, 2012
excellent!
aFan4Life - February 21, 2012
he did come back to change his picture
munson21502 - February 20, 2012
For all those who say WR is not a top need, just think if we somehow end out with the Explosive RG3 in the draft. What the hell is he going to do with guys like Gaffney, Stallworth and Moss? This would be like forcing Usane Bolt to run the 100 meter dash at the olympics wearing Timberlands’.
Tiller56 - February 20, 2012
While I do think it's a need
I don’t think they desperately need to go out and get a top guy. I’d put WR 3rd in the list behind QB and OL. FA WRs rarely go on to new teams and perform at the same level so I wouldn’t be too upset if they targeted a mid tier FA WR and looked to the draft for others.
I know we don’t have a Steve Smith but Cam did alright last year with next to nothing at receiver.
Who would you target at WR? of them all I would only really be interested in Colston as he seems to be the guy with the best work ethic to go along with the ability.
PJ_21 - February 20, 2012
But Cam had Smith, Williams, Stewart, Olsen and Shocky – which is far from next to nothing.
Tiller56 - February 20, 2012
and the Redskins (likely) have Davis, Cooley, Helu, Hightower, Moss Gaffney and hopefully Hank progressing. While that isn’t great by any means it is serviceable for now and means they can focus the attention on other areas rather than risking big money on a WR.
Id love a true #1 but just don’t trust FA receivers.
PJ_21 - February 20, 2012
Cam also had Jordan Gross and Ryan Kalil
having a decent WR corps (including TE’s there) is doable when you have some time to throw.
Steve Shoup - February 20, 2012
I was going to say the same thing Steve
Tiller56 - February 20, 2012
And that fine
we could put WR at 3rd, but it’s still a high need. I would rank our top 5 needs at such:
1) QB
2) OL
3) WR
4) MLB
5) S – if Landry departs
Tiller56 - February 20, 2012
It would be nice if Hank, Paul and Robinson all had major developments during this offseason....
I’m not sure how losing McCardell and adding Ike Hilliard falls into their development. Wide Receiver could take a back seat, but withouth knowing, it would definitely be smart to add a top tier guy to take a little pressure off the youngin’s and at least have something for the defense to concentrate on other than the running game
ptowny - February 20, 2012
This
Now I do believe bringing back Davis will help a bit, but we still need more. I believe(and this will certainly be very unpopular), that we should let Moss, Gaffney and Stallworth go. Currently, they do nothing explosive for our offense, and frankley, I believe Paul and Hankerson can run 12 yards downfield, turn, and catch a ball, and then get tackled – only point is, Hank and Paul may also be able to turn upfield and break some tackles too, which either of the 3 I mentioned can not do.
Tiller56 - February 20, 2012
I really like Paul...
but I don’t think he’s ready to replace Moss. Moss has a knack for getting open, and I def agree he needs to take a backseat to the young guys, I don’t think he needs to be released, especially with the uncertainty of Hank’s recovery.
Paul posted the Redskins new logo on his twitter a week or two ago….hilarious!!!! I recommend someone go grab it and post it, I cant do it from my phone.

this isn’t off of Paul’s page, but it’s where he got it from
ptowny - February 20, 2012
Oh
I thought you meant a real one……………yes, I had seen this one
Tiller56 - February 20, 2012
If Paul or Hank can beat out those guys, fine...but not from "potential"
Arguably both Paul and Hank got carried on a squad for a year based on potential. Paul at least run blocked and played teams. Hank had major problems even making the game squad most of the year…and just had a very serious injury (and is a question mark now).
We spent way too long carrying Devin and Malcomb. Paul and Hank need to fight for their spots like anyone else. They are not even 2nd round picks.
TCO - February 20, 2012
I don't think
MLB is that high a need this year. I like Riley there, and, hopefully, London remains entrenched. If so, perhaps we look for his (eventual) replacement later in the draft. But I don’t think that qualifies as a “need”. I would put more O linemen higher, as well as CB.
CJHutch - February 20, 2012
I think CB needs to be in there and I'd say before WR
assuming Davis is back, Davis, Gaffney, Moss, with Hank and Cooley coming back from injury is a lot better than Wilson, Hall and Barnes…after that all we have are Westbrooke and Thompson, ouch.
Steve Shoup - February 20, 2012
Westbrook played pretty well in nickle and dime duty
he’s no superstar, but he decent backup material.
Tiller56 - February 20, 2012
if he's your 5th corner that is great b/c he's a good guy, not a me first player and plays ST's
but he can’t be relied upon for an entire year. And when Hall and barnes are your number 2 and 3 CB, your depth better be ready.
Steve Shoup - February 20, 2012
i think wr has been a position we have had the most luck in with FA
might be ceacause how bad the WR we draft has been. but im not scared to go after a good FA at this point.
munson21502 - February 20, 2012
This is my concern as well.
I believe that if they go out and get a Bowe type of WR, its a good indication that they are going try and get Griffin.
Redskin44 - February 20, 2012
The early 90s..
when Taz was the ..it
It was a big fad in the 90s to put cartoon characters with dreadlocks on t-shirts.Taz was one of the more popular ones. I think those Redskin taz shirts was an example of someone trying to cash in on that fad minus the dreads
PAinfUL - February 20, 2012
For anyone comparing the two, would Jamarcus Russell have done this? This kid could be the best thing to ever, let me repeat, EVER happen to this franchise. I can’t see a single player with the complete package in this draft(at any position).

With HGH testing happening at the combine...
who’s the dummy this year? Every single year, someone shows up to the combine with a little THC in the system and makes them fall. Somone will fail some sort of test for sure, it always happens….what if it was Luck or Griffin! haha that would be amazing
ptowny - February 20, 2012
How about Earnest Byner landing with the Bucs?
congrats…
ptowny - February 20, 2012
Why haven't we talked about moving into Minnesota's spot?
St. Louis will not take a QB, we know that, and it will be cheaper. That way, we get RG3 and the Vikings can still in all likelihood get Claiborne, seeing as corner was their big issue last season.
Just a thought.
iH8dallas - February 20, 2012
That's a very interesting point
I guess my only concern there is if somebody were to sweep the rug out from under us and trade up to take the #2 from STL.
Ohio Redskins - February 20, 2012
I think the assumption is that the number 2 spot is where RGIII will get drafted
Rams don’t need him, and their pick is for sale. While the Vikes pick might be ‘cheaper’ someone could still meet the Rams askign price
Steve Shoup - February 20, 2012
Yes
Agree. He’s prob going to the highest bidder at #2. The only team who should be ableto out bid us is Cleveland, but I have my doubts they will even try.
Tiller56 - February 20, 2012
non-flashy and contrarian FA pickup?
How about getting the blocking TE from Dallas? Could it be like when we stole Bowen (who was a reserve)? Guy is a good blocker and Paulson and Davis have serious issues there and even Cooley has good/bad moments. Also, some possible upside if he has been limited in catches because of Witten. Add to that, his familiarity with playing the division and a little more intel on Dallas.
Only tricky spot would be how that works out with who we have now (Davis, Cooley, Paulson…and I guess Sellers). But both Davis and Cooley have question marks about their availability and Paulson and Sellers are marginal talents. Kind of could fit into the whole Shanny thing of making guys fight it out for a spot, etc. And maybe somehow (not sure) play into some scheme of hding a guy on pup or cutting someone (Paulson) who might still be available if needed later.
I guess there is some other TE (whose name I don’t know) that we picked up at the end of the season when Davis went down. Shows that you have to have contingencies and we are not “set” if guys go down. I don’t know how good that fellow is, but he can compete in camp like the rest of them?
TCO - February 20, 2012
well Paulsen and Sellers really don't have to and probably won't be on the team next year
still not sure I’d sign Bennett, he doesn’t have the greatest work ethic reputation, though I am for bringing in a blocking TE.
Steve Shoup - February 20, 2012
for all the talk of Flynn to the Dolphins because Philbin
I was just reminded that Mike Sherman, the OC of the Dolphins, was Tannehill’s head coach in college…I read that Sherman had a lot of praise for the dude. Could mean one less team in the race for Griffin, if they feel Tannehill is their guy, which could also mean the asking price to move up might not get as pricey. It doesn’t seem like the Seahawks would trade up from what I’ve been reading, so it may come down to between us and the Browns, and the Browns might be more interested in Richardson. Who knows, maybe we won’t even have to trade up to get Griffin.
atark001 - February 20, 2012
Yes, and it's possible he won't be as dominating at the Combine as expected
Really, a lot of stuff can happen before the draft. Right now there are just too many variables and unknowns to make any solid predictions.
Donnio1234 - February 20, 2012
very true
atark001 - February 20, 2012

iH8dallas - February 20, 2012

I haven’t heard one way or the other.
atark001 - February 20, 2012
he should be
Steve Shoup - February 20, 2012
He needs to
Tiller56 - February 20, 2012
That article by Trippiedi (only two choices...)
was weird. Often convoluted wording, and he said about 10 things as fact that I had never heard before and seem unlikely (such as that he knew the Skins were in talks with almost all the teams ahead of or just behind them in the draft, and that Griffin had mechanical problems). Interesting, and he could be right, but I have to wonder about his sources, and whether he really is in tune with Shanahan’s thinking. Anyway, he predicted that Manning and Orton would go elsewhere, and Shanahan would opt for Weeden in the second round, keep Rex and Beck, and maybe pick up Jimmy Clausen or an UDFA.
Donnio1234 - February 20, 2012
He does have mechanical problems
He has an extra hitch in his arm movement when he goes deep at times. He also has a weird angle when he goes back in his throw. He holds the ball not low but not up high and when he brings it back it is a little off. Jim Zorn would not be happy. He also has happy feet in the pocket. This might be due to the fact that he is thinking about running, i’m not sure, but he does a little tap dance before he sets and throws. With all that said his passing is solid so those things don’t get much mention. However, this idea that Griffin is such “a pure passer” with perfect mechanics is all in people’s mind on HogsHaven.
Jeff Bernard - February 20, 2012
Mechanical problems................what is he, a freaking airplane?
have you seen Osweiler? That my friends is mechanical problems.
Tiller56 - February 20, 2012
