Tale of the Tape: Justin Blackmon vs Stanford

The Washington Redskins have questions that need to be answered at wide receiver. The general believe is that the Redskins will go down the free agent route to solve this problem, but if they can't land the guy they want, they might have to look to the draft. Justin Blackmon is widely considered the top wide receiver in this years draft class. He had an brilliant season, putting up 121 receptions for 1522 yards and 18 touchdowns. Amazingly, his stats actually regressed from his 2010 season where he caught 111 passes for 1782 yards and 20 touchdowns.

Blackmon looks destined to be selected in the top ten, or quite possibly even in the top five picks of the draft in April. Now I personally don't believe he should be a top five or top ten pick. This isn't to say he's a great talent, but I don't believe a wide receiver should be taken in the top five unless they have the complete package at wide receiver. If I'm taking a receiver in the top five, I want a guy that has the potential to be special a la Larry Fitzgerald or Calvin Johnson; a guy that can out jump a defender to go up and get the ball or can just as easily run past his defender. Justin Blackmon doesn't posses elite speed (projected 4.5 40 time) or the height (Blackmon is 6'1") to out-jump everyone he comes up against.

Again, this isn't to say he can't be a great receiver, just that I'm not sure he's worthy of a top five or top ten pick. Lets have a look how he played in the Fiesta Bowl.

Slant1b_medium

Blackmon runs a quick inside route. What I like about this play is that he shields the ball from the defender with his body and then catches the ball with his hands.

Star-divide

Slant1c_medium

He secures the ball despite the attempt from the defender to knock it loose. He then uses his advantageous body position to shrug off the defender and break into the open field. He runs away from the defense and takes it all the way for a touchdown.

Here's another very similar play.

Slant2a_medium

Like the last play, he positions himself so that his body shields the ball from the defender while he secures the catch.

Slant2b_medium

He manages to break the initial tackle attempt before the second defender gets an arm wrapped around him.

Slant2c_medium

Blackmon gets turned around, but somehow manages to keep his balance and stay on his feet. He once again breaks free and gets an extra ten yards before he's brought down.

That catch put them in the red zone, where Blackmon saw double coverage.

Drop1a_medium

Blackmon runs in between the two defenders and manages to gain a bit of separation coming out of his break.

Drop1b_medium

Quarterback Brandon Weeden throws a very catchable ball. I believe Blackmon goes at the ball with his hands the wrong way around. Receivers will have a way they prefer to catch the ball, but from my perspective, I feel that he should have his left hand on top and his right hand supporting underneath. That way the nose of the ball would be caught between thumb and fore finger while the rest of the hand naturally wraps round the ball. The way Blackmon attempts to catch this pass means he has to pull the ball into his body to catch it.

Drop1c_medium

The defender manages to disrupt the process of Blackmon bringing the ball back into his body and the ball comes loose. Luckily for Blackmon, the drop didn't have an impact on the outcome of the game.

Later in the game, Blackmon showed how well he can run routes to manipulate the defense and get himself open.

Goodrouterunning1a_medium

Blackmon takes a dummy step to the outside which gets the corner to shift his weight in that directions. As soon as this happens, Blackmon cuts back inside and runs past him.

Goodrouterunning1b_medium

Having easily gotten past the corner, the safety is forced to come over the top to help cover. Blackmon plants his foot in the ground to cut back inside.

Goodrouterunning1c_medium

Blackmon cuts back against the momentum of the safety. You can see as Blackmon comes back across the middle, the safeties feet get crossed as he attempts to stop and change direction.

Goodrouterunning1d_medium

Blackmon makes a good adjustment to come back to the ball as it's thrown slightly behind him. He catches it with his hands instead of with his body and has lots of space and time to turn and run into the end zone for a touchdown.

This last play shows Blackmon's ability to gain more yards after the catch.

Yac1a_medium

Blackmon runs a slant route and gets in front of the defender. Like he did on the dropped touchdown pass, he gets his hands the wrong way around, but this time he manages to catch the ball.

Yac1b_medium

He breaks the arm tackle of the initial defender, managing to keep his balance before the next defender can get to him.

Yac1c_medium

He gets a good stiff arm on the defender and gets past him to pick up as many yards as he possibly can.

Yac1d_medium

He eventually is brought down from behind, but he had already managed to get a first down and crossed midfield into the Stanford half of the field.

Blackmon had a huge performances in one of the biggest games he played in college. His stat line read eight receptions for 186 yards and three touchdowns. What are your thoughts on Justin Blackmon? Is he worthy of a top five pick? Is he even the best receiver in this class? Should the Redskins take him at 6 if they can't get a quarterback?

I like kendal wright from baylor.

I think kendal wright is a lil better then blackmon , i have seen both play and wright seems way better in my opinion . Its a shame we could not get both RG3 and kendal wright they would work good together .

too small though...

we need a big bodied receiver

hahahahahaha. hahahahahaha. okay
UK

I agree man, I just would not pick this guy in the top 10 picks. Don’t get me wrong I think he’s going to be a good WR barring he has a guy that can throw him the rock. However, I just don’t see him in the league of a Larry Fitz or a CJ who teams design entire defensive packages around and he still puts up the numbers and scores when it matters the most.

I just wish we had our QB situation settled so we could bring in Wallace from Pittsburg. If we had RGIII and could bring in Mike I’d be beyond excited for this upcoming season.

I do not want a WR with our 1st round pick

First we need a QB.

UK-Another great post

My thoughts on Blackmon are that he will be a great asset to a team that already has a QB. Obviously we do not, therefore, I do not like the thought of drafting him as much.

RG3 or bust!!!

Cheers Ohio Redskins

Would your thoughts change if we brought in a Manning or Flynn in free agency?

the hand placement comment

Can you explain where that comes from? Is that like from a book on how to be a WR? Or common coaching advice? Have a pic of someone doing it right?

I got it from trainers and school

If you have ever played WR in high school/college or gone to off season training camp with pro trainers ( I have twice in High School for WR) they teach you to always catch with your hands index fingers and thumbs in to control the nose of the and the rest of your fingers and hands to grip the ball/cradle the ball. It is the most efficient way to catch the ball because you secure the ball and control the ball in one motion and can protect it from someone trying to slap it out of your hands.

In the 1st photo you see blackmon uses good catching technique with his index and thumbs in and is in the motion of pulling the ball down before the defender can strip him.

In the 7th photo down, the catch in question, his thumbs and index fingers are out so he can not secure the ball he is relying on his hands and arms to cradle the ball into his chest where he cant control the ball or arms from being slapped down or away. it is very hard to control the ball with a body catch. where as if you catch with your hands your fingers are spread all over the ball and can grip the ball much more effectively.

I thought i take a stab at it since i have present and former WR experience but hope it helps you understand

got it...

thanks…I get it now.

Can see that a lot of drills might be needed, may not really be instinctual to catch like that

how do our guys do on that?

Moss, Hank, etc. etc.?

Does a good pro do this all the time?

Moss as far as i kno was always a hands catcher in the NFL. Hank on the other hand

in college hank just did what felt comfortable which was use his hands or his body depending on the situation. If it was in traffic he used his hands if he was wide open he just did whatever. However now in the NFL i havent seen him use anything but his hands

Couldn't have said it better myself
UK you should do Floyd and Wright as well so we can compare all the WR. No matter how you look at it, it is not RG3 or bust Shanny might look to solidify the WR corp with a WR in the first round.
I will probably get round to them

At some point.

I'm curious as to why you don't think this guy should be a top 10 pick.

I am no expert in evaluating football talent, outside of watching guys play.

With Blackmon, he’s just better than everybody else. Kind of like London Fletcher compared to other linebackers. You can measure him, time him, weigh him etc…

But in the end there is no explanation as to why London Fletcher is a better linebacker than 95% of the ones in the NFL. He just is.

My point is, I think Blackmon will be very good in the NFL. Is he 6’5"? No. Does he run like a deer? No. He’s just good.

Sometimes that’s all you need.

I agree, I think he can be very good.

But I don’t think he’s that elite talent that Calvin Johnson or Larry Fitzgerald was and from my point of view, I’d only use a top 5 or top 10 pick on a guy with that elite talent level.

My basis of that is that if you are drafting in the top 10, chances are you have more important needs than a wide receiver. So unless the guy is a ’can’t miss elite talent’ I wouldn’t take him there and I don’t think Blackmon is that.

But that’s not to say he can’t be a good, or great receiver in the NFL.

Steve Smith is 5'9" and I've watched him jump over DBs for almost a decade.

He actually makes it look quite easy.

Blackmon’s vertical isn’t that good either. Calvin Johnson almost doubles him. Perhaps Blackmon improved that leading up to the combine. We’ll see.

That's the thing. Comparing Blackmon to Johnson athletically isn't fair.

The closest comparison I can think of for Johnson is someone like Julius Peppers early on, who was simply a better athlete than everyone.

Blackmon has what like 250 catches over the past two years, and nearly 40 TDs?

He could jump a 4 inch vertical and he’s still the best wideout in college football.

The same was said about Michael Crabtree

While I’m a fan of the guy, he hasn’t lived up to his hype.

Sure his QB sucks, but he’s dropped a lot of passes and been quite a diva.

With that being said, I do believe that Blackmon will be an excellent WR in the NFL

and by almost doubles you mean not even close to double
I think his speed is fine

His quickness is underrated and as a big bodied receiver, he can get yards after the catch and he plays much bigger than his 6’1 listing. I also think the 4.3 receiver speed is overrated. You can cover guys deep, but you can’t teach hands. You throw the ball near Blackmon and he’ll pluck it out of the air. The Heyward-Beys and Desean Jacksons can’t do this. You don’t necessarily need to be 5 yards behind the defender to make a play on the ball, Blackmon’s proven his ability to make tough catches when he’s had to box a defender out or the coverage is decent. It’d be his potential character issues that would concern me, not his ability.

very good points
I agree his speed is fine.

Overall he’s pretty well rounded, but I’m not sure I see anything that is elite.

He’s not on AJ Green or Calvin Johnson’s level, I wouldn’t be shocked if he fell to 6 at all. That being said, I’d take Blackmon over Julio Jones in a heartbeat and Jones came off the board at what.. 6 a year ago? So it’s hard to pinpoint where these guys are valued versus where they will come off the board. I don’t think blackmon will experience a Dez Bryant-like drop, but outside the top 5 is definitely a possibility. If I’m the Rams/Vikings, I’m not passing on Kalil and Claiborne, and after those two teams, who knows? Cleveland maybe if they don’t land RG3, and vice versa for us if we don’t. I could see us targeting Reiff if he’s on the board, even if some of us would like Blackmon.

Really? I’d take Jones over Blackmon this year. I didn’t feel Jones was a million miles away from Green, and I think he would be the best receiver in this class in my opinion.

I’m a big proponent of having great hands and making catches away from the body. It always annoyed me that Jones body catches everything if he can get away with it. If he has to make tough snags, it seems more often than not he’s not able to. It’d be my personal preference probably to have Blackmon, like your liking Jones.

Completely agree

I wouldn’t take him top 6, and I think picking a receiver first would be a big mistake. Everyone who thinks we need weapons BEFORE we get our quarterback needs to realize we wasted Santana Moss’ best years with sub-par QB play. A receiver is worthless if you don’t have someone to get him the ball.

At least we could go out and get RG3 for Santana's sake.
I agree.

I think once we sort the QB situation, however we do that, we can look to build up something from there. Obviously, if we fix the QB with free agency, we could look at sorting out the WR in the draft. I still think though that we should draft a QB (RG3) first priority, then OT, then CB, then WR. Which basically rules out Blackmon.

I’d just add before someone says something, thats a list of our priority. Not saying we’re going to sort out all our problems in the draft, just the order in which we should attempt to.

yeah, imagine what Santanna could have done with a legit QB
Nice post UK.

I’ve been saying that Blackmon has a better chance of being a bust than an elite WR for awhile now. He has average speed, size, and athleticism. He’s going to problems creating separation from NFL CBs, a huge step up from the Big 12. Tiller will reference Jerry Rice but afterall it’s Tiller.

I'm not sure he'll have problems separating.

He runs good routes and cuts at the right times. Sure the speed/athleticism helps receivers to separate, but it’s not all down to that. Blackmon may not have top end speed, but he is very agile and cuts in and out of breaks efficiently without losing much speed, which should help him separate in the NFL.

2 time biletnikof winner

Blackmon is not average in the slightest. Did you watch Stanford vs OSU? He willed that team with his plays. Game was going to be ugly before he finally scored. Blackmon is a beast. He has that #1 WR vibe on him easily. As tall as DeZ with a better head on his shoulders and more production. If he’s at #6, take him. Period.

Blackmon has an average skill set.

Btw Dez is 6’3 230 vs Blackmon who is 6’1 215. We all love to hate Dez but he is and was a much better prospect. Oh, and the description “beast” needs to be deleted from describing any player.

Great stuff UK...

As bad as Skins need a WR, getting a cornerstone OLineman or CB would be better.

Agreed

I’ll probably be looking at Claiborne and/or Reiff in the not too distant future.

At number six the pick is...

I could definitely see them going with Blackmon. He has solid hands and is a hard worker. He would fit right in with the new “type” of Redskin Shanny seems to be drafting.

I'd be surprised.

I think they’d take an offensive lineman or a corner (if Claiborne is there) before they took Blackmon. But that’s just me.

I find it hard to believe that Tampa would pass on Claiborne...

I agree with you the decision could be Reily Reiff or Blackmon. There are some that wouldn’t be happy if we took a CB at #6 but I would be. If Claiborne falls to #6 I would have no problem getting a potential shutdown Corner there.

As for Reiff, #6 might be a little high for a Right Tackle but as I have said before would it be possible that we could move Trent over to right?

alot of the mocks that has us trading the rams for the 2 spot.

has the rams taking reiff at 6

I'd be fine with Claiborne at 6.

I haven’t seen much footage of him, but all the reports indicate he’s a better pure corner than Patrick Peterson last year. I know people think we should focus on offense with the first few picks, but Claiborne is supposedly one of the best prospects in the draft and fills a need, so I’d take him happily.

I wouldn’t move Trent to the right side unless somehow Matt Kalil fell to us. I think Trent has been fine at left tackle, and once he gets some stability inside next to him he’ll become more consistent.

nice post UK

i doubt we will get blackmon but i wont be upset if we do

Blackmon is basically

Anquan Boldin.. Is Anquan Boldin a Top 5 pick? Not right now.

5 years ago?? Close but not top %!!

He reminds me of T.O. in demeanor, physically, and in ability. If we stand pat, I have no problems with Blackmon.

agreed. Blackmon would be an immediate

Upgrade. I have zero issues with his selection. Day 1 starter.

He may only be 6'1 but...

He has a 33 inch vert, and has more range than a Plaxico type reciever so your crazy for thinking he won’t out jump DBs
