Hogs Haven

Ten Yard Fight: Final Thoughts Before the Offseason Ends and the Real Season Begins

1. The last thing a diehard fan wants is to be at odds with the team he or she loves. If you are a fan of the Washington Redskins, you have come to know a few of the soul-killing ways the organization has employed to target its fans in recent years (suing fans, Signgate, Vinny Cerrato...these things happened). That said, I honestly believe the team has attempted to lay a little low on that front. The Bruce Allen and Mike Shanahan era has resulted in a very low profile for owner Dan Snyder. He has done exactly what we all were begging him to do: put competent football people in charge and let them do their job. With that step backward on the football side of things has come a step forward on the public relations front. The lawsuit against the newspaper notwithstanding, Dan Snyder has done a fairly decent service to himself in his pursuit to win the hearts and the minds of the fanbase.

2. On the eve of the NFL Combine and all the action that will soon be hitting us in rapid-fire, here's hoping they see Hogs Haven for what it is: the greatest community of Redskins fans on the planet led by a group of writers that very much care about keeping the trust we have earned in the almost four years we have been on the scene.

3. Speaking of the story that won't die, it seems the national media is just catching on to what happened here two weeks ago. From MSN, to NFL.com, to NFL Live, we have seen headlines detailing Jim Haslett's denials. I just have to believe that if the Redskins were a winning team...if the Redskins were a team that garnered the attention and respect of the casual fans around the country...if the Redskins were the same kind of team they were 20 years ago...this would never have taken two weeks to hit the national scene.

4. Talk about going at it the hard way to get a true sense for the lack of any relevance whatsoever for this team right now. Look for that to change by the end of 2012.

Star-divide

5. While I am pretty decided that Peyton Manning coming to the Redskins makes next to zero sense, I do have moments when I falter. I think of the contract that will be almost insultingly franchise-friendly with its incentives and performance bonuses. I think of the allure that Mike Shanahan might actually be to a guy like Peyton. I think of the freedom it would give Allen and Shanahan in the first three rounds of the upcoming draft. I think of the invaluable experience that would be gained by a slew of young players getting the opportunity to play with a living legend. I think of the unimaginable high that would result from an improbable run deep into the playoffs. On most days, I am decided...but some days I falter.

6. I would say right now there is a 43% chance Peyton Manning signs with the Redskins.

7. I know that it would be crazy to target and sign Mario Williams. While on one hand I would love to see a coaching staff find a way to get Orakpo, Kerrigan and Williams all involved in a pass rush, the other hand would be palming my face if we sign the shiniest toy available.

8. Does anyone think there is less than a 90% chance the Redskins sign C Chris Myers?

9. Get ready for a full offseason of Hank the Tank talk. Sure, one would be tempted to zip it after a year in which they talked up a player that struggled to find his way into the starting lineup and suffered a season-ending injury. Not me...I am doubling down. I fully expect Leonard Hankerson to be a star this season for us. Two words: Pro Bowl.

10. Why in God's name won't people take us seriously?

Sign Super Mario, use Orakpo to trade up?

Stranger things have happened, but not this time…

Chris Myers? Yes please. Monty is OK, but would be excellent depth. if he chooses not to sign on, we have players playing G that could fill in at C.

7. I know that it would be crazy to target and sign Mario Williams. While on one hand I would love to see a coaching staff find a way to get Orakpo, Kerrigan and Williams all involved in a pass rush, the other hand would be palming my face if we sign the shiniest toy available.

I don’t see how this could happen, considering we have Rak and Kerrigan, and Super Mario played OLB in that new 3-4 in Houston. It would be an insult to move him to DE in our 3-4, and it would be a slap in the face to Rak and Kerrigan to sign Williams.

Was it

A slap in the face to Osi and Tuck when the Giants drafted JPP? Or Strahan and Osi when they took Tuck? If so, who the hell cares? Both moves helped get them rings.

But no, I don’t expect us to sign him. Unless, for some strange reason, we traded Rak to St. Louis.

We could switch to a 3-3-5

and have all three in on blitzing downs haha

I am one that think there is a less than 40% chance we sign Myers, as I believe there are 2-3 centers in this draft we can target in the 3rd or later, who I think can be very good.

agreed.

i see us drafting Molk from Michigan or Vlachos from Bama.
I do think Hankerson is gonna blow up this year. 71 catches 1081 yards 7tds….BOOK iT!

I'll take all those numbers...

But I would give up catches and yards for double digit touchdowns. I think Hank needs to show his nose for the end zone.

ill bet anything you want that those aren’t the exact stats ;)

no thank you..

but I HOPE

i'm right there with you

Provided he’s healthy I can see him having a big year so long as it’s not Rex throwing the ball again.

Hank

really looked like he’d found his stride in that Miami game and he got the offense moving, unfortunately that was the game where his season ended. I’ve heard his injury could really hold him back for a while?

I do not want Vlachos

he measured at just 6’ 0" at the senior bowl. Even Kellen Moore couldn’t get under his ass.

I think it depends

If they can’t land Grubbs/Nicks, then I think they will make a big push for Myers. I think they are going to go all out to try and land Grubbs, especially if Nicks is franchised.

Mario- 0% chance. Peyton- 15% Myers- 57%
I have no problem with the media, or even some fans here thinking its the same ol' redskins

I prefer to go about our business methodically and quietly…two double loss seasons under the new regime surely smell like the same ol’ skins from the outside, but I agree with you, Synder has done what our fan base has been clamoring for and we now have competent football minds running the show….let the media poo poo us (always wanted to use that phrase), because in due time we’ll have what we fans have been waiting for: consistent winning year in and year out.

good points today

1. Good point, perhaps we haven’t given Snyder enough credit – probably because we’re waiting for him to come back with a vengeance. But it’s good to give credit where credit is due.

2. And talk about giving credit where credit is due, you guys who run HH deserve a lot of credit. I’ve checked out quite a few Redskins websites and this is by far the best. People share and debate ideas without getting ugly which is a very good thing because in the end we’re all Redskins fans.

3. Given the vehement denials by Haslett I now think the event really did happen and haslett just didn’t think that the info might end up on the internet. Anybody can have a brain fart like that so I hope he doesn’t receive too much flak over it.

8. I have no idea but I hope we do sign him and Grubbs too so our OL improves significantly. That would mean RT is our only problem area on the OL.

10. Because we’re too inconsistent and our current starting QB is Rex Grossman. How seriously can we expect to be taken with Rex as QB?

I didn’t mention Peyton because I’m tired of the Peyton Manning drama with no actual changes. I’m holding out for some real action on that front.

Would Chad Henne be a good backup QB prospect (BACKUP, not starter)? It sounds like the Dolphins won’t be keeping him.

Wish List:

Free Agents: Carl Nicks (RG), Brent Grimes (CB), Marques Colston (WR)
Draft: RG3 (QB), Dont’a Hightower (LB), Casey Hayward (CB), Josh Bush (S)
Current Skins I’d like to see more of: Leonard Hankerson, Dejon Gomes, Jarvis Jenkins

Wake up lil camper, it appears as if you are in dream world.

When I dream, I don’t waste it on the impossible. I dream about a Scar Jo and Megan Fox sandwich..

Does Megan Fox do anything with her thumbs?
She's less inclined to get a holding penalty and she's not looking for a contract in excess of 56 mil like Nicks is.

Other than that it’s rather unsightly.

I'm just saying. I would let her do it, if you know what I'm saying.

After some liquid lubing.

Haha

Does this “Leonard Hankerson – All Pro” campaign signify the end of the “Fred Davis – All Pro” campaign of years past?

Both All Pro, along with Helu.
Oh boy

exactly how i feel
This should be posted after every iH8 comment
The Fred Davis All-Pro campaign is over...

He finally showed us all what we knew he was capable of as a receiver.

Let the Hank the Tank propaganda campaign begin!

Is there a reason

You said receiver, and not (starting) Tight End?

I bet we sign the center from Oakland.
Samson Satele?

Good player, younger than Myers.

Think he’s a had-case though. Is he not one of the more penalised players in the NFL too?

What exactly

Is “penalise”, and how do you know he had a case of it?

did you mean head case?

Keep in mind that the Raiders are the screwiest organization in the NFL and their corporate culture leads to a lot of problems. When a player has troubles in that organization I chaulk a lot of it up to the organization and not the player. Case in point: Marcus Allen. That doesn’t mean that possible warning signs should be ignored but it does mean that the coaches should meet with the player and find out the truth about what’s going on – is it the player or the organization. The same logic for penalties.

No thanks to Satele

is he that much of an up-grade over Monty? Maybe a little, not much though.

Why in God's name won't people take us seriously?

to an outsider the team has done nothing to show they deserve to be taken seriously.

With the right additions hopefully this will be the year the league starts to take notice of the Redskins again and for the foreseeable future but they need to earn it first.

I agree.

As a fan since birth, this team is not going to be taken seriously until those wins start adding up we start constantly winning. When our record is 11-5 rather than 5-11, we will be taken seriously. I believe we are two years away from this realization if we continue on this path. We are on the up-swing, where as teams like the Eagles may be coming to some hard realizations that it’s gonna take more than big FA pickups to get to the playoffs and secure a SuperBowl. Can’t wait for 2012 season to start!

HTTR!

Hell even an 8-8 record would garner some respect
yeah haha. Consistantly 8-8 would pull us out of the trash bin.
we're just a QB away from that

I thought I’d throw that in just in case people wanted yet another oportunity to get going on the QB issue.

Youre forgetting a other 'lure' for Peyton.

Playing Eli TWICE a year.

I really dont think that is a lure

When Indy and the Giants have played the “manning” bowl i kept feeling that Peton and Eli hated it cause of all the stupid attention it got.

I don't think the Haslett story says much about the Redskins at all

It could have some very modest importance if it was true, and actually gave some insight into Shanahan’s thinking. But those insights were mostly no-brainers. “Not big on Flynn”, “interest in Manning under the right circumstances”, “might try to trade up for RG3”. Duh! Anybody on HH could have told you that. It was a non-story.

Oh boy....where to begin

“I think of the allure that Mike Shanahan might actually be to a guy like Peyton”:

What about the Allure of Jim Harbaugh and that defense? What about the allure of throwing to Larry Fitzgerald? Mike Shanahan’s stock has plummeted over the past two years. No way Manning goes to Washington.

Hank the tank??? I’ve got a new nick name for him: Leonard. Even if he tripled or quadrupled his out put from last year he would still be coming up short in an area the Redskins need any sort of help. Way to much kool-aid/optomism for me. I’d be fine with it had the Skins done something, anything to warrant it but I don’t see it.

Ken, do you see the Redskins going to playoffs this season?

I think the playoff question is a little premature since the draft and free agency haven't taken place...

but if we had gone after Orton last season, do you think we could have pull out 2-3 more wins? That wouldn’t have gotten us in the playoffs, but the improvements this season would put us over the hump. I think contending for a division title is always in the picture, I mean, the Super Bowl champs only had 9 regular season wins.

This is Shanahan's 3rd year

How long are we going to be saying playoffs of “premature”? So another losing is in order? Then maybe in Shanahans 4th year Redskins fans can can hope and pray for a playoff Berth? Bullderdash! They need to compete this season

If Grossman had started all the games

We may have had 2-3 more wins…

Reasons People Don't take the Redskins Seriously:

Rex Grossman
Rex Grossman’s backup
The Entire Secondary
Dan Snyder
Zero Big Play Threat
Zero Home Field Advantage
The Offensive Coordinator
11 wins in two years
The Receiving Corp.
3 Trips in 20 Years….

Haha. Offensive Coordinator haha. Love it.
About the Rodskins/Haslett thing

Rodskins just put up a Fanpost denying that Haslett admitted to “tampering”. Basically, the original post said “discussions were already going on” (about Peyton). Then he went on to say that he misspoke, and actually there had not been any talks. I.e., Allen had friends in Indy who he might contact when and if. That is an amazing admission by Rodskin. Totally made up that discussions were already underway. How can you invent actual talks? To me, that stunning admission makes the entire post worthless, and Rodskin totally unreliable as a reporter. Very sloppy. Not a liar, because he’s not a reporter and said all along that he was working from memory.
