All this bickering talk about first round, rookie quarterbacks may be for nothing. According to ESPN's Adam Schefter the Redskins are set to go the free agent route come March:
If Peyton Manning is released, Redskins are expected to pursue him. Redskins also prepared to pursue free agents Matt Flynn and Kyle Orton.
Ooooo... the life of a Redskins fan. Remember Schefty and Shanny were boys in Denver, this could just be another smoke screen from Professor Shanny.
Another update via Adam Schefter:
Peyton Manning is willing to create a contract that would contain no guaranteed money up front and would be incentive laden with bonuses.

If I could Rec this via mobile device
I would…over & over
CptChaosSidekick - February 5, 2012 via mobile
i don't mind Flynn
but you get a rec for a well placed Michael Scott reference
Steve Shoup - February 5, 2012
I would rather have him or Manning
If we decide to go that route but I am not interested in Kyle Orton. Did Shanny coach Orton in Denver or was that after his time?
Fred Dudley - February 5, 2012
no after his time
Steve Shoup - February 5, 2012
If we go with Orton or Flynn,
Give them a brick wall and frisbee catching dogs.
iH8dallas - February 5, 2012 via mobile
i would take all 3 over sexy
play one these dudes while our second round QB develops.
2014 will be our year…enjoy the impending misery, but eventual happy ending
WizKid27 - February 5, 2012
So if you're developing a guy for 2014 then why not just go with Rex?
Parks Smith - February 5, 2012
Because that would be like taking party planning advice from the Duke Lacrosse Team.
iH8dallas - February 5, 2012 via mobile
This is fantastic
KShark28 - February 5, 2012
Because Rex is a below average QB? Really need to stop the Rex propaganda. He turns the ball over too much to even have a chance to win consistently. Orton is a very average QB at best and would still be a upgrade.
HogtieJim - February 5, 2012
his td to turnover ratio for one
small hands, not athletic, and a gunslinger mentality thanks to his idolizing Brett Favre.
WizKid27 - February 5, 2012
Wait, I thought you just described Tony Romo…
J. W. - February 6, 2012
Possible smoke screen?
Schefter is close w/ shanny…any chance he’s trying to leak false information?
CptChaosSidekick - February 5, 2012 via mobile
The other side of that question
Why would Shanny be leaking true information? In February, no less?
CarverM - February 5, 2012
Prepared to go after...Hmmmm: GOOD!?!
Well I sure hope so, I hope the Skins are prepared to do many, many things depending on how Free agency and the draft goes; Contingency plan after Contingency plan…a QB is needed and to be unprepared would be the last thing I would want of my team…
dr WNC - February 5, 2012
Agreed on planning aspect
I’d be ok w/ an Orton signing & drafting RG3 but doubt Orton wants to hold a clipboard.
CptChaosSidekick - February 5, 2012 via mobile
Orton....hmmm
I wouldn’t knock orton on a 2-3year midlevel, as long as we still draft Tannehill, Weeden, Foles, or Osweiler. While not elite, Orton Is effective and very capable of Shuab like numbers – not a long term solution, but a bridge that will allow us to wait for a 2nd or 3rd round qb to develop and allow us to do something else with the #6.
btwice - February 5, 2012
Kyle Orton is turrrrrible. I’m tired of starting QBs that have a ceiling in talent…and a rather low one at that.
Kevin Ewoldt - February 5, 2012
I agree.
Keep DC neck-beard free.
CarverM - February 5, 2012
Do agree with this though. Wish it got admitted about Grossman here like it should. As low as Orton’s talent is, it is still above Grossman’s talent. That’s how bad Grossman is.
HogtieJim - February 5, 2012
If we draft Weeden, he's starting day 1
His age would require learning on the job, I’d imagine.
CarverM - February 5, 2012
Actually, I’d like foles for developement.
J. W. - February 6, 2012
According to rotoworld
Schefter also said we’ve “contemplated” trading up for a QB too. I think it’s safe to say that we’re keeping our options open. Though if we could really sign Manning and not have to guarantee any money, that would obviously be the ideal choice.

jgibbsfan1 - February 5, 2012
Flynn can kiss my a**, rather go with Peyton
Bryan Black - February 5, 2012 via Android app
I'd say
Do both. Get Flynn, Manning (if healthy) and draft Tannehill or Foles
Jiza32 - February 5, 2012 via mobile
Sign every free agent
that way there’s noone left for other teams! Roster limits and salary cap be damned!
CarverM - February 5, 2012
What about John and Rex?
And whatever Crompton’s first name is? Could we trade John for picks at least?
TCO - February 5, 2012
John Beck has no trade value whatsoever
CarverM - February 5, 2012
Sure we can, which kind do you want
Ice, tooth, or Afro?
CJHutch - February 6, 2012
unless there is a team that has a owner that likes to be in the record books.
whats the record for most starts without a win for a qb? i think beck and break it if given a chance…
munson21502 - February 6, 2012
Nice spin on Schefter's report #SMH
So…they’ve discussed everything we’ve discussed? Duh
But that doesn’t mean they are leaning one way or the other. Heck…we’ve discussed all of the above too.
Copious 1 - February 5, 2012
At some level
they’ll probably have ‘internal discussions’ about every available free agent and every draft-eligible prospect at every position.
CarverM - February 5, 2012
Exactly
However….people are going to over analyze every tidbit is such a ridiculous way. Raise your hand if you knew Kerrigan and Bowen would be on this team at this point in the off-season last year?
Copious 1 - February 5, 2012
Parks did...
TerpsAllTheWay - February 5, 2012
Not at this point in the off-season last year. He called it much closer to the draft.
Copious 1 - February 5, 2012
I called Kerrigan in November, actually....
Parks Smith - February 5, 2012
you have his phone number?
iH8dallas - February 5, 2012 via mobile

give it a call

I just might.

i thought it was 8765309?
fraja926 - February 5, 2012
well done!
Steve Shoup - February 5, 2012
I've been corrected. No one important called it Kerrigan this early (sarcasm font)
And NO ONE called Bowen.
Copious 1 - February 5, 2012
I did in December/January last year and Terl put it up on the Skins blog...
Start giving me some respect, I have sources!
Parks Smith - February 5, 2012
I'm uncomfortable now. I'm going back to church.
Where’s Tebow when you need him.
Copious 1 - February 5, 2012
I'll admit
that recently I’ve been hung up on the reports that the coaches spent a lot of time with Juron Criner at the senior bowl. One of the things I look at in every mock draft is to see where he’s taken.
CarverM - February 5, 2012
haha +1
Parks Smith - February 5, 2012
Yes!!!!! Bring in #18 and draft HH favorite Tannehill in the second round.
Use the first pick on Claiborne or a lineman and continue the “rebuild”. How can any Skins fan be against it?? I’m not sold on Flynn personally, but if we sign a Qb it saves all our draft picks and the “rebuild” lives on!!
Chillz - February 5, 2012
How does a rebuild continue if you rent a nearly 40 year old QB?
iH8dallas - February 5, 2012 via mobile
You forgot the words "weak armed"
Skins Fan '77 - February 5, 2012
We haven't used the Tillerdamus Arm Strength-O-Meter on Manning yet
Parks Smith - February 5, 2012
He allows us to save all our draft picks, draft a Qb of the future that can sit and learn.
We can take Claiborne sure up the secondary, take Tannehill in the second. That’s all rebuilding or even trade back and get more picks now that our biggest question mark is answered.
Chillz - February 5, 2012
And then still in mediocrity for another 5 years
Bryan Black - February 5, 2012 via Android app
Chillz Account circa 2008: "YES bring in Jason Taylor! How could a Skins fan be against it!?!?!?!"
Parks Smith - February 5, 2012
wow...talk about bringing up old stuff.

DavidDunn - February 5, 2012
I have no idea who this guy is, but...
Howard Eskin is reporting on twitter:
Again, no idea who he is, or how reliable he is, just showed up on my twitter timeline as someone had retweeted it.
UkRedskin - February 5, 2012
He's a radio host in Philly... so yea....
Parks Smith - February 5, 2012
ya think...
and I don’t even need a radio show or NFL contacts to figure that out…
DavidDunn - February 5, 2012
Also, I don't know if this point has been made yet.
Why would the Skins sign Orton this year when they picked Grossman and Beck over him last off-season? They had the chance to claim him off waivers as well, but chose not to.
UkRedskin - February 5, 2012
They would've had to traded for him last offseason, not the same situation
Parks Smith - February 5, 2012
Wasn't he a FA?
Or is my memory deceiving me?
UkRedskin - February 5, 2012
No, remember the Dolphins were trying to trade for him
Parks Smith - February 5, 2012
Yeah Miami only wanted to give a 4th
But Denver wanted a 3rd. Skins could have tried to pick him up after he was released by Denver, but it was so late in the season.
ipitydafu - February 5, 2012
i dont know
I’m starting tto come around to Manning in a skins Jersey. I trust shanny and if he thinks its OK then ill give it a shot. I know the mcnabb situation doesn’t back my point up well but he was starting to become washed up even before he got here Manning on the other hand is still one of the best to play the game and we don’t know what he has left at the moment anything but Rex and for the record I want Griffin here
no more kwame's in dc - February 5, 2012 via mobile
Comparing Manning to McNabb....
is even worse than comparing Weeden to Wienke.
MagicHat - February 5, 2012
exactly
That’s why I’m saying I’m opened to the idea. Petting is still one of the best and I think we could contend with him next year. We have a good defense… something he never had in Indy… a good RB that he never really had in Indy (not great atleast)… and he wont throw balls to the floor Every possesion. let a qb develop under him and we could be good for 10 years
no more kwame's in dc - February 5, 2012 via mobile
All of these reports mean nothing.
I’ve realized that Shanahan lies more than anyone on the face of the earth. This probably means we’re trading up.
iH8dallas - February 5, 2012 via mobile
doesn't even mean that much at this point......
maaaaaaaaybe it’s the old double smokescreen trick. He knows full full well that everyone is familiar with his reputation, so he is leaking true info just so everyone thinks he is going to do the opposite.
MagicHat - February 5, 2012
The ol' Basic Instinct alibi
I wrote the book, would I be so dumb as to commit the murders that I wrote about?
CarverM - February 5, 2012
It's the double smokescreen playaction reverse end around switcharoo.
iH8dallas - February 5, 2012 via mobile
absolutely....
you know what I’m talking about.
MagicHat - February 5, 2012
At last year's Combine, remember MS mentioned
that they needed a “pass rusher” to compliment Orakpo…and gues who they drafted in the first round Ryan Kerrigan.
So I’m not sure if you can say that Mike is a liar anymore. He’s just unpredictable.
Chilliewil - February 6, 2012
Then...
“Ryan O’Halloran of CSN Washington updated that report regarding free agents Flynn and Orton. O’Halloran reports that there is a consensus in the Redskins’ organization to pursue Orton, but not Flynn.
Flynn, with all of two NFL starts, has been likened by some Redskins personnel as a lesser version of Kevin Kolb — and they didn’t like him, either.
Orton and Skins quarterback Rex Grossman have a history together, and competed for the starting job in Chicago. O’Halloran writes that Grossman, a free agent, would likely be free to sign with another team if Orton lands in Washington. With Manning’s health still up in the air, it appears Orton is target number one at this point."
LA11 - February 5, 2012
I'm not totally opposed to giving Orton a 1-2 year deal, only if still draft a QB in the 2nd or 3rd
Parks Smith - February 5, 2012
I hope I swayed you some
I always thought Orton was like Jason Campbell. Not great, not awful. While rex is rex is rex is rex
WizKid27 - February 5, 2012
No I've felt the same way about Orton.
He was actually doing very well in Denver, his running game and defense just sucked. Then Denver’s defense and run game actually started playing in WHAT DO YOU KNOW?
Parks Smith - February 5, 2012
i was talking anyone but rex
WizKid27 - February 5, 2012
Agree, but they have to get a good young QB prospect who can
become the Quarterback of the Future. A guy like Orton would more or less be filling Rex’s role – place holder until the new guy is ready.
Donnio1234 - February 5, 2012
The huge advantage of taking a FA QB
Is how much it opens up our draft possibilities.
Suddenly we can take Blackmon at #6 and be able to take a RT in the 2nd (instead of a QB there).
Or trade back from 6, get Floyd in the mid first, get a RT and a CB in the 2nd.
So many possibilities
tman5 - February 5, 2012
It's like the 49ers
If you can continue to build a really solid team, that is only missing one piece (QB) so be it. When you are really solid all around, you can then bust the bank for the QB at some point.
tman5 - February 5, 2012
Wow, you’ve been reading the Holmgren theory on Cleveland..
J. W. - February 6, 2012
the key is to pull the trigger when there is a QB worth pursuing
which is why it wouldn’t surprise me to see Peyton in SF next year.
aFan4Life - February 7, 2012
Really good points...
Parks Smith - February 5, 2012
I'm not one of the
Wait til next year for a QB. But I am not opposed to “wait til later to DRAFT a QB.”
If we get a FA stopgap, but keep improving at every other position, I am happy. Solid depth and talent all around is what makes a good football team.
tman5 - February 5, 2012
it makes sense
Even if we got griffin with the 6th pick, I don’t think you would want to throw him into the fire. Maybe I’m reading between the lines but in shannys recent interviews he has talked about adding depth and playmakers. In addition, he’s talked about wanting a rookie to have the right protection and weapons to excel. I interpret this to mean he will not make a move for Qb in the draft unless somebody falls in his lap
Redskin44 - February 5, 2012 via mobile
I'm pretty sure he talked about getting a quarterback, too
It seems to me that politically speaking – if he wants to keep his job – he has to get a top quality QB. If he does not, and loses, he’s gone. If he gets a seemingly top guy, he’s safe for at least two more years, even if the guy flops and/or the teams loses.
If they did something like Orton and Tannehill (or Foles or Weeden), he’d be OK, although I would prefer somebody better than Orton to start the season. Of course, I would still want them to trade up for RG3, but wouldn’t complain too much.
Donnio1234 - February 5, 2012
We get a stopgap, draft oline help and offensive play-makers, its not a bad approach. Personally, I like the QB’s in the next draft more so than this one.
2up2down - February 5, 2012
Me too. Especially Murray from georgia – to Cleveland. I wish I was the Browns GM – I’d work with you on a deal – what do you offer for the #4 spot and chance to take the Heisman winning QB from Baylor U?
J. W. - February 6, 2012
boooooooo
booooooooooo to kyle, dude even looks like rex, just sayn
Sean Qtip Guilliams - February 5, 2012
Yea they are both white!
Parks Smith - February 6, 2012
Get Peyton... trade back for two firsts.
Get Michael Floyd and other first round pick of your choice. Foles. Peace of mind. Ahhhh….
NRKgoSKINS - February 5, 2012
I mean is Flynn really an option...?
Brutus89 - February 6, 2012
gif fail
Brutus89 - February 6, 2012
I read that some of you guys think that its all smokescreen and thats what shanahan does
Remember last year before the draft Mike actually did say they wanted to draft a OLB on the other side of Orakpo. So maybe he really is getting a FA QB like manning or orton. I honestly think they are gonna trade back and draft Mike Adams OT and Peter Konz or Glenn in the second and i think they will draft that casey hayward kid in the 3rd. and hopefully Manning in the FA and then sign Dwayne Bowe and
iOrakpo - February 6, 2012
So we're not failing to plan, we're planning to fail?
then I’m hoping for Peyton as he’s the only one who’d give us a remote chance at a SB.
aFan4Life - February 6, 2012
The only way Schefter comments would have been interesting news...
… is if he said the redskins are definitely NOT pursuing (insert QB prospects name). At least then we can deduce and shrink the scope of our options at QB. I can’t imagine them not looking at every angle. Its like being at dunkin’ donuts and Schefter announcing that the Redskins are looking at 100 different flavors. Of course they are. The hard part is figuring out which ones they’re gonna eat.
Jpage0024 - February 6, 2012
I want Peyton here.
He works so hard I can’t really see him doing too badly.
Trade up for RG3 too.
No Flynn. He might be good, but he might be the next Kolb.
TorchM - February 6, 2012
brees ?
danny boy will outbid the saints and brees = superbowl in 2014 plus we still get to keep the 6th pick
