I came across this recent Bleacher Report article where the writer spoke with Landry first hand and at length regarding his Achilles injury. I saw that Landry re-tweeted this article, so it's safe to say Dirty 30 validated it. I recommend the entire read, but here are some of the major parts.
Landry prefaced the Achilles story that the Redskins originally wanted him to get shoulder surgery, but that the second and third opinions he got said surgery was not needed and "PRP" treatment would work. And it did. So, one can see why Landry is hesitant to trust the Redskins medical staff. As for the Achilles:
"This year, I went back to the same doctor in Anderson and he instructed the best thing for me was to get open up and fully cut my Achilles and that's a tough surgery as it takes a year and a half to heal," he continued.
"So I went to get a second and a third opinion and everyone I've talked to, and not to criticize Dr. Anderson, but they said, ‘why would you want to operate on that Achilles' when there are other options to healing?' So that's where the hick-up comes in with the team. I told them I wanted to try the other procedure and it's better than the PRP and the procedure would allow my body and heel to strengthen, along with my bone structure and tendons, instead of cutting and taking away those things. It would heal on its own, so why not grant me the opportunity to do this procedure before going through a major surgery?"
For the people that think Landry is done in D.C., hold onto those 30 jerseys. When the Redskins get a chance to evaluate Landry later this month, things could change financially. I certainly am a lot more optimistic than I was twenty four hours ago.

I'm conflicted
I think he has the potential to be an excellent talent when healthy, but I think if we resign him and he gets hurt, we don’t have the depth to replace him. Is the reward worth the risk? I don’t know.

And either is misrepresenting what he heard from his doctor or he heard what he wanted to hear: An 18 month recovery from achilles tendon surgery would be very long. The average nfl player returns 11 months after achilles tendon surgery. An achilles tendon repair should have a similar recovery course as an ACL repair. Like ACL injuries, players tend to have a decrease in performance after their returns.
In contrast to an ACL tear, not every professional athlete needs surgery to heal Achilles tendon tears. So it is a little more grey than black or white. You can read much more about it here

Coming up on a contract year
You can see why he didn’t want surgery but now that it’s recurred you have to ask wouldn’t it have been better to have it done the first year then be able to play into free agency with it healed? 20/20 hindsight is great except when it’s going to cost you millions. Chances are it’s going to happen again because they’re saying it’s bone spurs, not a pulled tendon. The only way to eliminate the bone spurs is surgery.

He was the dominant force we drafted him to be. (When he wasn’t covering somebody downfield) Yet he’s played in 64 games for us, and missed, I think, 16. Sorry, that doesn’t make him “Best” at anything.
He can’t cover, doesn’t wrap when he tackles, and spends too much time celebrating for hitting a guy who just made a 22 yard catch. Nope, I’ll take London Fletcher as our “Best Defensive Player” over him anyway, along with at least 3-4 other guys.

But earlier in his career while he played in most of the games I always remember him having nagging injuries and being limited or not finishing the game. Could be totally wrong though. I think the nature of his injuries(never healing achilles) and the last 2 years still classifies him as an injury risk.

And a success that he had with his shoulder seems to have convinced him that these alternative procedures need to be tried before total reconstruction… and I agree with him.
I do not understand however where Kevin’s enthusiasm for his return comes from. In reading the full article, it looks to me that Landry is the reasonable one and the Redskins medical staff is the tyrannical organization.
I have often wondered about the Redskins medical staff and the seemingly high incidence of soft tissue injuries. From what little evidence I’ve been able to read, I think that the medical staff might be a little behind the times and/or self-centered. As we become a younger team, I think the rest of the team needs to drag itself into the 21st century… this may be one of the reasons that we can’t seem to be able to hang on to our players.
Soft tissue injuries are also prime candidates for Toradol injections. I think there is something like half of the NFL teams that ban its use, I have a strong feeling that the Redskins staff probably highly recommend Toradol to their players and that those who refuse might be unfairly targeted.
This is just my opinion, but I find it disturbing that at least two of our players have had to pay for their own procedures to get back on the field when they conflict with the teams doctors.
I don’t think Landry is out of line, but I have a feeling that the front office feels differently. So if he signs with another team, I do expect him to go all Carlos Rogers on the Redskins… and now I think I would have to side with Landry

That it’s okay to ONLY workout 7 times a week instead of 21.
I understand he’s dedicated at being ripped and the most ripped Safety in the league, but he’s taking down tendons.
Plus he’s an idiot for playing through the pain when it was an achilles…. ACHILLES! It’s not like he was playing through a sore wrist or a bruised bone, but it was the main muscle that connects your calf to your heel bone and is the most important to WALK.

I think the market for him will be extremly thin and other than the rams because of Greg Williams might not get a long term offer from any one but the skins. at this point hes not elite but hes no rex grossman what I mean by that is your not going to find big upgrades over him in the draft or free agency unlike qb that offers upgrades in both. I like dirty 30 and otogwe but the more i read about fans wanting rieff the more i regret not taking Eric Berry over trent yes even with the injury

i would have taken Berry, but i would not have brought McNabb here either cause Jason was going into the last year of his deal. but that is the past. I think Landry can be dominate and help this defense be more than just a good solid D
I would try and sign him to a 4 or 5 year deal give him some upfront money and put in a roster bonus next March like the Colts did for PManning and if it dont work out this year i could cut my losses if need be.

hope for the best, and let him compete for the job. He could be great – we just don’t know. The way Laron describes the choices, I can see why he resists surgery. The Skins should definitely obtain one or two top safeties – they cannot rely on Laron.
