I think that the key to all of our offseason QB speculation lies in free agency. And not acquiring a QB in free agency, but a WR! Shanny has mentioned finding a playmaking wr, whether that be in free agency or the draft. WR's that I believe could help this organization: Blackmon, Wright, Floyd in the draft, and Bowe, Jackson, in free agency.
With that being said, EVERYONE knows that we have QB issues. Here is a list of QB's that I could see being the Redskins STARTING QB next season (i might not like the list, but its reality): Grossman, Orton, Manning, Luck, RG3, Tannehill.
In order to get a young QB, to call our own, in the draft (Luck, RG3, Tannehill), we're gonna have to get them in the 1st round. In the case of Luck and RG3, we'll probably have to give up more picks to get them. In doing so, to solidify our WR issues, we'll be forced to get stuck with a second tier WR (not Wright, Blackmon, or Floyd). This is not the best solution.
Now we can go the other route. If we decide to draft a WR at 6, Floyd and Wright will be available, POSSIBLY Blackmon. This would give us a automatic weapon on the outside.
Consider the fact that the Washington Redskins wide receivers have lacked yards after the catch (YAC) and overall play-making ability last year. Therefore, in determining the WR’s who the skins should avoid in the draft – let’s remove a few names that will not solve the YAC issue for the skins:
· Alshon Jeffrey – I know he is a beast of a WR which makes him a massive target. However, he does not create much after the catch and in terms of YAC.
· Jeff Fuller – Decent WR that can catch and make average plays. Reminds me a little of Devin Thomas (not in a good way either). Seldom does much after the catch.
· Nick Toon – Not a lot of stats or highlights for this guy. Doesn’t seem to be the true play-maker that the Redskins need. His projected 40 time is 4.60, which could make it difficult for him to excel at the next level.
· B.J. Cunningham – Projected 40 time is 4.62 and only 6’1" tall. Not much statistics to consider coming out of Michigan State.
In addition, I don’t see the Redskins taking any WR that is less than 6’0" tall, at least in the higher rounds. The Hankerson pick last year shows the team is set on bigger targets for the future. Just look at the majority of NY Giant WR’s (Victor Cruz was an undrafted FA), which gives E. Manning larger windows. That’s what will help any future Redskin QB. Therefore, based on height concerns, remove the following players:
· Kendall Wright
· Ryan Broyles (tough decision as I’m an OU fan in Oklahoma!)
· T.Y Hilton
· Joe Adams
· Tim Benford
· Eric Page
· Marquis Maze
· Jarius Wright
· Patrick Edwards
· Devon Wylie
· T.J. Graham
· Travis Benjamin
· Bert Reed
That still leaves a lot of talented WR’s for the Redskins to consider. However, I’m betting that the Redskins will do 1 of 2 things:
1) Trade up for RG3 (or)
2) Trade down for more picks
With this in mind, the odds of Blackmon or Michael Floyd are not likely. That leaves the following possibilities for the Redskins (depending on what round). Of course, some of these prospects will be late round or even undrafted Free Agents.
· Mohamed Sanu
· Dwight Jones
· Rueben Randle
· Marvin McNutt
· Marvin Jones
· Tommy Streeter
· Brian Quick
· Jermaine Kearse
· Stephen Hill
· Jordan White
· Jerrett Boykin
· Juron Criner
· Chris Givens
· Jordan White
· Greg Childs
· A.J. Jenkins
· DeVier Posey
· Chris Owusu
· Rishard Matthews
· Lance Lewis
· Junior Hemingway
· Matt Austin
· Darius Hanks
· Derek Moye
· Da’Jon McKnight
· Gerrell Robinson
· LaQuinton Evans
I really like Sanu if he’s available for the Redskins. Juron Criner impressed me in the Senior Bowl and could be a late round addition. Many of these guys will bring needed height and play-making ability.
Please add comments on who you feel the Redskins should select.
Would RG3 refuse to play for the Cleveland Browns? I think its possible. I know he comes off as a nice guy but Leaveland is debatably one of the worst franchises and cities in the NFL(imo). Personally I don't see the Browns moving up anyways. But it seems like an interesting thought.
I don't recall anyone mentioning this as a possibility. If I was him I'd be looking at DC and Miami as perfect landing spots. Both are bigger markets and both bring more to the table. I won't elaborate but in my mind its not a question.
I know I'm biased but what do you guys think?
This morning as I do every morning I check for updated Mock drafts. I am noticing that a lmore mocks have us taking Tannehill at 6 because hes the next best quaterback after rg3. When I look up his stats im am extremly confused as to why hes rated the 3d best quaterback. I have nothing against him and he is talented enough that I dont expect him to make it past miami, seatle,kc, and the browns if they miss rg3 and fall in our laps in the second round . but a lot of people also think he might be available when we pick in the second round .

Redskins world, I'm sorry, but I understand we need something to really excite our fan base again, and some1 like RG3 would do that, but I'm generally worried in giving up the amount of draft picks, for some1 that is basically unproven. With our luck as Redskins fans it wouldn't pan out.. I honestly was annoyed when we didn't address the situation last year, last year I believe was the year we should of addressed it because of the talent that slipped late. Allen and Shanny seem to have a system right now thats working with drafting players, and gaining depth. I know alot of you are going to disagree with me, but it's how I feel. I hope I'm wrong, I really do, if they wind up drafting RG3, then I hope he lights up the field, but as of now, it just makes me nervous, I don't want to see our team get set back, yet once again.
Profootballtalk is reporting that Peytonwould be interested in playing for the Texans. http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2012/02/13/report-peyton-may-be-interested-in-playing-for-the-texans/
simular stories can be found on yahoo sports and sportingnews.com
this actually makes sense because they are a contender and it would give him a chance to stick it to the colts twice a year. This would be great news to the redskins because that would instantly add another qb to the market. This of course is good news for the redskins because.........
There seems to be a lot of division among Redskins fans about what to do at QB. Me? I would actually be perfectly OK with a handful of the alternatives that have been bandied about.
PART I: Preferred
In NO particular order, here are the three moves that I would be pleased with:
1. Signing Peyton Manning
OR
2. Trading up from #6 for Robert Griffin III
OR
3. Trading down from #6 to stock up on picks, and using one to draft a lower-tier Tannehill-Foles-type QB.
Any of those 3 are fine by me. I feel like there's a major battle going on between proponents of the first option and of the second option, but I think either is good under the correct circumstances. And any caveats are somewhat irrelevant to me: if Manning won't sign for less than $30M guaranteed or whatever, then just pick a different option; if the Rams want too much for the second pick, then pick a different option.
PART II: If You Must
Shanahan, Shanahan & Allen could find themselves stuck at #6 in the draft and unable or unwilling to get Peyton Manning. In that scenario, the next two options are acceptable.
4. Picking a non-QB at 6, and drafting a QB in the second round if there's still one you like available. I'd also be OK in theory with trading back into the first round if there's a guy you really like, but that didn't exactly work out the last time it was tried (Campbell).
OR
5. Signing Matt Flynn, and picking a non-QB at 6. I fear that Flynn is more likely to be the next Scott Mitchell rather than the next Matt Schaub, but if the 4 options above don't work, I'd be okay with the Flynn option, if the price is right.
PART III: For the love of all that is good and right, please don't do any of these.
The cynic in me suggests that any of these options is merely a ploy to get into position to draft Matt Barkley in 2013.
6. Signing Kyle Orton. The only thing that could be said for this option is that it is not as bad as the others below. But it would still suck. (If you thought Campbell had OK stats but couldn't win...)
Of course, I didn't exhaust all the possibilities in my first five scenarios. The worst case scenario in my mind is: Cleveland trades up for Griffin, nobody wants to trade for the sixth pick, and Flynn signs with Miami, and Manning with, say, Arizona. Would I accept Kyle Orton in that scenario? I guess I'd have to. But I'd also accept watching the UFL in that scenario.
Now for the two real stinkers:
7. Reaching for a QB at #6. (Unless Griffin falls into the Redskins' laps, but then it's not a reach, right?) In Don Banks' (SI) first mock draft, he had Washington picking Tannehill at #6. My innards immediately began to rot.
But at least Option 7 would not mean:
8. Going into camp with a Grossman-Beck competition at quarterback. In this scenario, I would strongly consider switching allegiances to my dad's team: the Giants.
The one thing i keep hearing over and over again in reference to a trade up for Robert Griffin III is that if the Redskins trade up that they will not have any draft picks over the next 2 years or that pulling the trigger on a trade will mortgage the future and that this team is NOT in a position to make a trade for Robert Griffin III. It is debatable for what exactly it will cost in draft picks to trade up to the #2 spot with St. Louis but a lot will be uncovered after free agency. With Peyton Manning and Matt Flynn due to fill the needs at QB for a couple teams the market will surely change after free agency..
So just for this post I am going to use this trade scenario for acquiring Robert Griffin III and i think the trade will be close to this one. Redskins send 2012 1st rd, 2nd rd and 2013 1st rd, and 4th rd to St Louis in exchange for the 2nd pick in the draft. This move leave the Redskins with 2012 3rd, 4th,4th, 5th, 6th,7th. I think most of us would agree that Shanahan and Allen had a pretty good draft last year with getting 12 drafted players most of which contributed in some kinda way last season. The results of last years draft should ease any anxiety with trading up cause they have shown that they can find some nice players in the mid-later part of the draft. So this is what a draft could look like if they traded up for Robert Griffin III.
1st Rd QB Robert Griffin III 6'2" 220lbs Baylor
2nd rd traded pick to St. Louis
3rd rd WR Brian Quick 6'3" 222lbs Appalachian State: A big body with good hands, will fight for the ball in jump ball situations, good speed for size has a high ceiling could be a future #1 WR (Brandon Marshall)
4th rd T Andrew Datko 6'6" 310lbs Florida State: has good feet and is quick, able to get to the second level of the defense
4th rd WR T.Y. Hilton 5'10" 185 lbs Florida International : Has exceptional 4.3 speed, change of direction and elusiveness run after the catch type, good hands and great KR/PR ability (Steve Smith type)
5th rd CB Donnie Fletcher 6'0" 201 lbs Boston College:nice skill set with a combination of ideal size and quality speed, very good tackler in run support
6th rd C David Molk 6'2" 290lbs Michigan:a fast and mobile blocker who did a good job of opening up holes, fit the zone blocking Scheme undersized
7th rd ILB Adrien Cole 5'11" 250 lbs Louisiana Tech:is a physical, in-the-box defender who projects to an inside linebacker in a 3-4, could learn and play special teams
Now i realize that some of these guys might not be there when the Redskins pick but there are a couple guys i would target in each round
3rd/4th round targets : WR Marvin McNutt Iowa, TE Ladarius Green Lafayette, T Mitchell Schwarts Cal, WR Jeff Fuller Texas A&M, WR A.J. Jenkins Illinois, CB Josh Norman Coastal Carolina, CB Dwight Bentley Lafayette, CB Casey Hayward Vanderbilt, T Brandon Mosely Auburn, T Nate Potter Boise State, S Markelle Martin Oklahoma State,S Antonio Allen South Carolina, G Senio Kelemete Washington, G Lucas Nix Pitt, WR Juron Criner Arizona
So if the Redskins can get RG3 and some of these guys in the mid-late rounds i think it will make the overall team better without "Mortgaging the Future" I am sure Shanahan and Allen can find talent like they did last year. All of this is without filling some needs with Free Agency.
I'm a little surprised that LB Rocky McIntosh has not been mentioned more in trade talks. He has not worked out well for the Redskins new 3-4 style of defense, but he's still a solid player. I feel he could be trade-bait for the Rams to include in leverage to move up for the #2 pick of the NFL Draft. In addition, Chris Cooley could be tossed in to minimize the damage of giving too many picks away this year.
Then, we nab RG3 number 2 overall and hopefully still have our 3 Round pick this year to draft a WR, OL, or TE (to replace Cooley depth).
Free Agents:
Redskins should really look at adding WR's Dwayne Bowe and Steve Johnson this offseason. Along with retaining TE Fred Davis and developing WR Lenoard Hankerson - the skins would have some real threats to attack a defense.
